Abstract:Highly regioselective C‒H alkylation reactions of tertiary anilines and tertiary alkyl amines with simple alkenes have been achieved by the use of imidazolin‐2‐iminato scandium alkyl complexes. This protocol provided an efficient and atom‐economical route to structurally diverse tertiary amine derivatives. The basic ligand, a coordinating THF in the catalyst and the substitution of alkene substrates were found to switch the regioselectivity of the C‒H alkylation reactions of tertiary anilines presumably due to the generation of different types of catalytically active species or the formation of relatively stable intermediates. On the basis of the deuterium labeling experiments and KIE experiments, possible catalytical cycles were provided to understand the reaction mechanism as well as the regioselectivity.

Abstract:A new type of rare-earth alkyl complexes supported by monoanionic imidazolin-2-iminato ligands were synthesized and structurally characterized by X-ray diffraction analysis and NMR studies. The utility of these imidazolin-2-iminato rare-earth alkyl complexes in organic synthesis was demonstrated by their high performance in highly regioselective C‒H alkylation of anisoles with olefins. With as low as 0.5 mol% catalyst loading, various anisole derivatives without ortho-substitution or 2-methyl substituted anisoles reacted with a number of alkenes under mild conditions, affording the corresponding ortho-Csp2‒H alkylation products and benzylic Csp3‒H alkylation products in high yield (52 examples, 16‒99% yields). Control experiments revealed that rare-earth ions, ancillary imidazolin-2-iminato ligands and basic ligands were crucial for the above transformations. On the basis of deuterium-labelling experiments, reaction kinetic studies and theoretical calculations, a possible catalytic cycle was proposed to elucidate the reaction mechanism.

Abstract:A Cp*Rh-III-catalyzed annulative carbooxygenation of challenging 1,1-disubstituted alkenes triggered by C-H activation of N-aryloxyacetamides has been established, which affords 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran derivatives with a quaternary carbon center in good to excellent yields under mild redox-neutral conditions. An amide group on the alkenes is essential for the process, and may inhibit the beta-H elimination from C(sp3)-Rh species by saturating the rhodium center through coordination. Furthermore, mechanistic insights obtained from control experiments suggest a mechanism involving a Rh-III-Rh-V-Rh-III catalytic cycle.

Abstract:Two scandium coordination polymers, a 2D supermolecule structure {[Sc(OH)(L-1)(2)(H2O)]}(n) (1) (HL1 = isonicotinic acid), a 1D infinite chain structure {[Sc-3(L-2)(4)(H2O)(4)]NO3H2O}(n) (2) (H2L2 = 4,5-imidazole dicarboxylic acid), as well as a scandium complex {[Sc-2(OH)(2)(L-3)(2)(H2O)(4)]}(n) (3) (H2L3 = 1,2,3-triazole-4,5-dicarboxylic acid), were synthesized and characterized by X-ray crystallography. Compounds 1-3 are active heterogeneous catalysts for high-yield cyanosilylation of aromatic aldehydes in acetonitrile, particularly for p-nitrobenzaldehyde. Moreover, these three catalysts can be reused three times without significant loss in activity or mass.

Abstract:Reactivity of the reduced anthracene complex of scandium [Li(thf) 3 ][Sc{N( t Bu)Xy} 2 (anth)] ( 2-anth-Li ) (Xy = 3,5-Me 2 C 6 H 3 ; anth = C 14 H 10 2− , thf = tetrahydrofuran) toward Brönsted acid [NEt 3 H][BPh 4 ] and azobenzene is reported. While a stepwise protonation of 2-anth-Li with two equivalents of [NEt 3 H][BPh 4 ] afforded the scandium cation [Sc{N( t Bu)Xy} 2 (thf) 2 ][BPh 4 ] ( 3 ), reduction of azobenzene gave a thermolabile, anionic scandium azobenzene complex [Li(thf)][Sc{N( t Bu)Xy} 2 ( η 2 -PhNNPh)] ( 4 ), which slowly lost one of the anilide ligands to form the neutral scandium azobenzene complex dimer [Sc{N( t Bu)Xy}( μ - η 2 : η 2 -Ph 2 N 2 )] 2 ( 5 ). Exposure of 3 to CO 2 produced the scandium carbamate complex [Sc{η 2 -O 2 CN( t Bu)(Xy)} 2 ][BPh 4 ] ( 6 ) as result of CO 2 insertion into the Sc-N bonds. In an attempt to prepare scandium hydrides, the reaction of 3 with the hydride sources LiAlH 4 and Na[BEt 3 H] led to the terminal aluminum hydride [AlH{N( t Bu)Xy} 2 (thf)] ( 7 ) and the scandium n -butoxide [Sc{N( t Bu)(Xy)} 2 ( μ -O n Bu)] ( 8 ) after Sc/Al transmetalation and nucleophilic ring-opening of THF, respectively. All reported compounds isolated in moderate to good yields were fully characterized.

Abstract:Here, we reported a cobalt-hydride-catalyzed Markovnikov-type hydroallylation of terminal alkynes with allylic electrophile to access valuable and branched skipped dienes (1,4-dienes) with good regioselectivity. This operationally simple protocol exhibits excellent functional group tolerance and exceptional substrate scope. The reactions could be carried out in gram-scale with TON (turn over number) up to 1160, and the products could be easily derivatized. The preliminary mechanism of electrophilic allylation of α-selective cobalt alkenyl intermediate was proposed based on deuterium labeling experiment and kinetic studies.

Abstract:The one-pot salt-metathesis reaction of ScCl3, cyclopentadienyl lithium salts, and allylmagnesium chlorides afforded with ease the corresponding base-free half-sandwich scandium di-(eta(3)-allyl) complexes [(C5Me4SiMe3)Sc- (C3H5)(2)] (1a), [(C5Me5)Sc(C3H5)(2)] (1b), and [(C5Me5)Sc(2-MeC3H4)(2)] (1c) in high yields. Reaction of 1a with 1 equivalent of [PhNMe2H][B(C6F5)(4)] in toluene gave rapidly the N,N-dimethylaniline-coordinated cationic mono-(eta(3)-allyl) complex [(C5Me4SiMe3)Sc-(eta(3)-C3H5)(eta(6)-PhNMe2)][B(C6F5)(4)] (2). The similar reaction of 1a with [Ph3C][B-(C6F5)(4)] yielded the analogous toluene-separated ion pair [(C5Me4SiMe3)Sc(eta(3)-C3H5)(eta(6)-PhMe)][B(C6F5)(4)] (3). When [PhNMe2H][BPh4] was treated with 1a, the contact ion pair [(C5Me4SiMe3)Sc- (eta(3)-C3H5)( mu, eta(6)-Ph)BPh3] (4) was obtained. Recrystallization of 2, 3, and 4 in THF yielded the corresponding thf-separated ion pair complexes [(C5Me4SiMe3)Sc(eta(3)-C3H5)(thf)(2)][B-(C6F5)(4)] (5) and [(C5Me4SiMe3)SC(eta(3)- C3H5)(thf)(2)][BPh4] (6). The N,N-dimethylaniline-coordinated cationic scandium allyl complex 2 and the toluene-coordinated analogue 3 showed high activity (activity: 3 > 2) toward the polymerization and copolymerization of isoprene and norbornene to afford random copolymers with a broad range of isoprene content (33-86 mol %). The tight ion pair 4 and the thf-coordinated complexes 5 and 6 showed no activity under the same conditions. These results offer unprecedented insight into the structure-activity relationship of a cationic metal polymerization-catalyst system.

Abstract:Asymmetric ring-expansion reactions of silacyclobutanes (SCBs) with alkynes have evolved as one of the powerful protocols for the construction of silicon-stereogenic compounds. However, the achievement of highly enantioselective annulation of SCBs with terminal alkynes remains a challenge. Herein, we report a rhodium-catalyzed asymmetric annulation reaction of SCBs with terminal alkynes, which relies on the newly identified chiral sulfinamide phosphine ligand Ming-Phos. This catalytic system exhibits unique effects under mild conditions, leading to the direct synthesis of structurally diverse chiral silacycles in moderate to good yields with high enantioselectivities (up to 95% ee).
Use of Alkane Elimination in the One-Step Synthesis of Organoscandium Complexes Containing a New Multidentate Cyclopentadienyl Ligand

Abstract:A new multidentate ligand, CpH(NMe)SiN(H)R (SiNR = -SiMe(2)N-tert-butyl; NMe = 3-CH2-CH(2)NMe(2); 1) was prepared in 71% yield as a mixture of 1,3 and 1,2 isomers (approximate to 7:3) in one step from CpHNMe, Me(2)SiCl(2), and tert-butylamine. The ligand was attached to scandium in an efficient alkane elimination reaction by treatment of in situ generated Sc(CH(2)SiMe(3))(3) . 2THF with diproteo 1, yielding the alkylscandium species [(Cp(NMe)SiNR)Sc(CH(2)SiMe(3))], 2, directly in 52% yield. The reaction was 100% diastereoselective for the (1S)-(RSc)/(1R)-(S-Sc) pair of enantiomers. Treatment of 2 with dihydrogen gave two of four possible diastereomeric mu-dihyrides. The C-i symmetric 1R-trans-1'S diasteriomer 3a was characterized crystallographically. Thermolysis of 2 at 70 degrees C for 3 days resulted in metalation of an N-methyl group and loss of Me(4)Si. A mixture of two dimeric compounds with bridging methylene units was formed, one of which was identified as the C-i symmetric 1R-trans-1'S diasteriomer 4a by X-ray crystallography.
Allylic C‒H Alkylation of Internal and Terminal Alkenes with Alkenes by Rare-Earth Catalysts

Abstract:Allylic C−H functionalization of simple alkenes presents a step-economical route to access functionalized alkenes. However, current approaches are generally focused on the transformation of α-alkenes, the conversion of internal alkenes was challenging. Herein, we present that rare-earth catalysts enable to activate the allylic C‒H bond, allowing for the atom-efficient allylic alkylation of internal or terminal alkenes with styrene derivatives as well as dimerization of internal or terminal alkenes. In the presence of cationic imidazolin-2-iminato scandium alkyl complexes, various of alkene-coupling products were afforded in moderate to good results (64 examples, 16−99% yield, 1:3.4−>19:1 E/Z ratio). In this process, both catalyst precursors and additives impact on the reactivity and stereoselectivity. Additionally, the newly developed strategy was applied to benzylic C‒H alkylation of toluene derivatives. Mechanistic studies suggested that allylic rare-earth metal species was the key intermediate. A possible catalytic cycle with the participation of Lewis base was provided to understand the reaction mechanism and E/Z selectivity.

Abstract:The scandocene alkyl complex (C5Me5)2ScCH2SiMe3 was found to be an efficient catalyst for the dehydrocoupling of the non-cyclic boranes, dicyclohexylborane and thexylborane, with amines under mild conditions. The reactions afforded the corresponding aminoboranes in high yields with good functional group tolerance. The stoichiometric reaction of scandium alkyl with amine led to the isolation of a scandium amide complex, which was shown to be an active species during the catalysis. Although a borane-coordinated scandium hydride was also obtained from the stoichiometric experiment, it was not involved in the catalytic cycle. In addition, kinetic studies provided insight into this intermolecular dehydrogenation reaction.

Abstract:In this work, we demonstrated Ni-catalyzed oxidative coupling of unactivated C(sp(3))-H bonds with terminal alkynes for construction of C(sp(3))-C(sp) bonds to synthesize alkyl-substituted internal alkynes. Abstract:Selective delivery of an N-nucleophile onto an alkyl radical is a challenging step in redox catalysis. In this work, di-tert-butyl hydrazodiformate was found to be a unique effective amination reagent in Cu-catalyzed C(sp3)–N bond formation reactions that involve alkyl radical intermediates. This method is applicable to both electron-deficient and electron-rich radicals, and we were thus able to achieve the direct C–N coupling of activated bromides, as well as the carboamination of general alkenes based on this chemistry. Mechanistic studies suggest that the hydrazodiformate forms a reducing dinuclear complex with Cu and the ligand which, upon 1e-oxidation, turns into an open-shell species with the major spin density on N atoms. With the assistance of a ligand, this species can selectively deliver the hydrazine moiety onto an alkyl radical (prior to halide transfer), leading to the formation of a C(sp3)–N bond. The products obtained with this amination method could be easily deprotected to afford alkyl hydrazines and further derived to primary amines or N-heterocycles.

Abstract:Rh(III)-catalyzed meta-C-H functionalization reactions are still rare. Herein, we report the first example of Rh(III)-catalyzed meta-C-H alkenylation with disubstituted alkynes directed by a U-shaped nitrile template. Exclusive regio-selectivity has been achieved using unsymmetrical aryl and alkyl-disubstituted alkynes to afford synthetically valuable trisubstituted olefins. Propargyl alcohols are also compatible, affording complex allylic alcohols. Notably, transition metal-catalyzed meta-alkenylation with alkynes has not been successful with Pd catalysts.
