Abstract:Yb3+/Er3+ co-doped BaY2F8 nanoparticles with upconversion luminescence behaviors were prepared via a hydrothermal synthesis method, followed by heated treatment at different temperatures in the range of 200℃ to 800℃. Influences of heat treatment temperature on the crystal structure, morphology, and upconversion luminescence intensity of the nanoparticles were investigated. Significant increases of the particle size and upconversion luminescence intensity of the nanoparticles were observed with increasing heat treatment temperature. Upconversion mechanism of the BaY2F8:Yb3+, Er3+ nanoparticles was also discussed.

Abstract:Synthesis conditions for preparing [(Ba0.85Ca0.15)(0.995)Nd-0.005](Ti0.9Hf0.1)O-3 (Nd-BCTH) nanopowders by hy-drothermal method were tailored using orthogonal experiment method with three factors and three levels. X-ray diffraction measurement, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, surface aperture adsorption analyzer, ultraviolet-visible spectra, and fluorescence spectrophotometer were used to characterized the synthesized nanopowders. Well dispersed Nd-BCTH nanopowders with excellent crystallization and luminescence properties are obtained at reaction temperature of 200 ?C, 14 mol.L-1 alkali concentration, and 24 h reaction time without adding surfactant. The nanopowders present a pure pseudo-cubic perovskite structure with rhombohedral phase approaching the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) at room temperature, which present nano-sized particles with slight conglomeration. Using 267 nm light exciting, strong photo -luminescent emission peaks are excited at 364 nm, 422 nm and 440 nm in the Nd-BCTH nanopowders, which correlate with the transitions of Nd3+ from D-4(3/2) -> I-4(9/2), D-2(5/2) -> I-4(9/2) and (4)G(11/2) -> I-4(9/2) via two processes of non-radiative relaxation and fluorescent transition, respectively. The CIE1931 chromaticity calculation of the emission peaks and fluorescent photograph show that the Nd-BCTH nanopowders emit indigo blue fluorescent light.

Abstract:Lead titanate nanostructures with different phases and morphologies, layered hexagonal PbTiO2(CO3)(0.3)- (NO3)(0.35)(OH) nanosheets, pyrochlore Pb2Ti2O6 nanodendites, pre-perovskite PbTiO3 nanofibres and perovskite PbTiO3 nanoplates, have been synthesized via a conventional hydrothermal route assisted with different concentrations of tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH). X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and high-resolution TEM (HRTEM) were employed to characterize the phase, morphology and growth behavior of the synthesized samples. The results reveal that at low TMAH concentration the obtained samples are mainly of PbTiO2(CO3)(0.3)(NO3)(0.35)(OH) nanosheets. With the TMAH concentration increasing, the obtained samples change to pyrochlore Pb2Ti2O6 nanodendites, pre-perovskite PbTiO3 nanofibres and perovskite PbTiO3 nanoplates in turn. With the basis of the experimental results, the phase- and morphology-evolution mechanism of the lead titanate nanostructures is discussed by combining the analysis of the lattice structure feature and the properties of TMAH.

Abstract:Uniform and well-dispersed NaTb(MoO4)2 hierarchical nanoflowers have been fabricated via a hydrothermal method by using trisodium citrate as additive. The morphology and particle size of the NaTb(MoO4)2 samples can be tuned in a controlled manner by altering the pH value of the initial solution, reaction temperature, and component of solvent. The Eu3+-doped NaTb(MoO4)2 sample mainly shows the characteristic emission of Eu3+ corresponding to 5D0–7FJ (J=1, 2, 3, 4) transitions due to an efficient energy transfer from MoO42− and Tb3+ to Eu3+. The as-synthesized NaTb(MoO4)2:Eu3+ may be applied as a novel red phosphor in optoelectronic devices or advanced flat panel displays.

Abstract:A series of [(Ba(1-0.3y)Ca0.3y)1-xSmx][Ti(0.8+0.2y)Hf(0.2-0.2y)]O3 (Sm3+-doped (1-y)Ba(Ti0.8Hf0.2)O3-y(Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3, abbreviated as Sm3+-doped BCTH, or (1-y)BHT-yBCT:xSm3+, x = 0.0005–0.03, y = 0.2–0.7, y representing the mole fraction of (Ba0.7Ca0.3)TiO3) nano phosphors were prepared by a hydrothermal method. The Sm3+ ions doping amount and triple-point morphotropic phase boundary (TMPB) composition dependent photoluminescence properties were systematically investigated. The hydrothermal synthesized powders present rather pure pseudo-cubic perovskite phase structure at room temperature and locate on the rhombohedral side of MPB. Under the excitation of 409 nm light, the powders exhibit dominant orange-red emission peaks with characteristic emission of the Sm3+ ions at around 564 nm, 596 nm, 644 nm, and 703 nm, relating to the transitions of 4G5/2 → 6H5/2, 6H7/2, 6H9/2 and 6H11/2, respectively. The BHT-0.5BCT:0.005Sm3+ powder exhibits optimal emission in these Sm3+-doped BCTH powders. Furthermore, the phase transition temperature can be characterized by the multi-feature changes of the temperature dependent fluorescence intensity.

Abstract:Lead tungstate (PbWO4) crystals with unique hierarchical morphologies have been successfully synthesized in the presence of a triblock copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)-poly(propylene oxide)-poly(ethylene oxide) (EO70-PO20-EO70, P-123) under mild hydrothernial conditions. When reaction temperature is changed from 140 to 180 and 220 degrees C, the as-obtained PbWO4 samples can vary from flat tubular to rod-shaped arrays and complex slabs with porous film texture on their surface. Meanwhile, by using polyvinylpyrolidone (PVP), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), and hydroxycellulose with distinct functional groups as structure-directing agents, PbWO4 samples such as polyhedrons and rods with porous groove texture, as well as tube-shaped aggregate bundles, can be obtained. The optical properties of the as-made PbWO4 samples with various morphologies were examined by photoluminescence (PL) and Raman spectroscopy. Results show that PL of the rod-like arrays and microtube structures is redshifted relative to that of the complex slab sample. In general, the present synthesis route may be extended to prepare other inorganic nanomaterials with special functions.

Abstract:Sheaflike terbium phosphate hydrate hierarchical architectures composed of filamentary nanorods have been fabricated by a hydrothermal method. The X-ray diffraction patterns and thermogravimetric/differential thermal analysis investigations reveal that the obtained terbium phosphate hydrate has a structural formula of TbPO4 center dot H2O, which can be readily indexed to the hexagonal phase GdPO4 center dot nH(2)O in JCPDS file 39-0232. The evolution of the morphology of the products has been investigated in detail. It is found that the addition of CTAB and Na2H2L (disodium ethylenediamine tetraacetate) plays an important role in controlling the final morphology of the products. A possible formation mechanism of the sheaflike architectures was proposed according to the experimental results and analysis. In addition, the phase structure of the product changes to monoclinic phase when it is annealed at 750 degrees C for 2 h in N-2-H-2 atmosphere. Tetragonal chase TbPO4 can be obtained when annealed temperature increases to 1150 degrees C. It was observed that some changes take place on the morphology and optical properties of the products annealed at different temperatures.

Abstract:By designing an orthogonal experiment with four factors and three levels, (Na0.5Bi0.495Nd0.005)TiO3 (NBT-Nd) nanopowders were prepared using a hydrothermal method under different conditions to determine the optimum hydrothermal synthesis conditions. The synthesized NBT-Nd nanopowders were characterized using X-ray diffraction measurement, ultraviolet-visible spectra, photoluminescence spectra, and transmission electron microscopy to evaluate the orthogonal experimental conditions. The results showed that NBT-Nd powders with excellent crystalline and luminescence properties could be obtained at 160 degrees C, with a 16 h reaction time, 8 mol center dot L-1 NaOH, and with 0.4489 g C19H42BrN. The optimized hydrothermal method-prepared NBT-Nd powder has a rather pure rhombohedral perovskite structure at room temperature, and exhibits an aggregated polycrystalline structure containing nanotubes and nano-sized particles. Under excitation of 247 nm light, strong fluorescence emissions are excited at 423 nm and 441 nm in the NBT-Nd powder that were generated by transitions of Nd3+ from D-2(5/2) to I-4(9/2) and from (4)G(11/2) to I-4(9/2), respectively. Through CIE1931 chromaticity calculation of the emission peaks, the NBT-Nd powder was shown to emit indigo blue fluorescent light.

Abstract:The microstructure of BaTiO3 (BT) nanocrystals was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), and (high-resolution) transmission electron microscopy [(HR)TEM]. The BT nanocrystals have a cubic perovskite structure as revealed by XRD and SAED. They were prepared by a hydrothermal method using different starting materials: (i) Using as-prepared titanium hydroxide and barium hydroxide as starting materials, BT nanocrystals were obtained with a narrow size distribution and an average grain size of 65 nm, exhibiting a spherical particle morphology and smooth surfaces. These nanocrystals showed almost uniform contrast in TEM. HRTEM lattice fringe images indicate a rather uniform, perfect crystal structure. (ii) Using barium hydroxide and titanium dioxide (anatase) as starting materials, many coarse-faceted cubic nanocrystals and a small amount of spherical particle were observed, indicating a developed bimodal size distribution. Diffraction contrast variations across these particles indicate the presence of high strain in these BT particles. The strain is probably caused by the lattice defects like OH− ions and their compensation by cation vacancies. HRTEM images demonstrated that (1 0 0) and (1 1 0) surface facets are present on these particles. In addition they revealed the presence of very small-nucleated BT islands at the edges of the faceted particles.

Abstract:Nanoscale [(Ba0.85Ca0.15)(0.995)Nd-0.005](Ti0.9Hf0.1)O-3 (Nd-BCTH) ceramics were prepared via the hydrothermal method, and the effects of sintering temperature and holding time on the phase structure, micro-morphology, electrical and optical properties of the Nd-BCTH ceramics were explored. All the Nd-BCTH ceramics present rather pure perovskite structure with composition approaching rhombohedral phase around the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) region. The highest relative density is obtained for the sample sintered at 1220 ? for 10 h. The existence of Ba2+, Ca2+, Ti4+, Hf(4+ )and Nd3+ is confirmed and the elements distribute rather uniformly detected by X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. The ceramics present nanoscale grain size, which tends to increase with the increase of sintering temperature and holding time, and significantly affects dielectric constant and Curie temperature. Very thin and narrow ferroelectric hysteresis loops are observed, where a considerable energy storage density (173.88 mJ/cm(3)) and high energy storage efficiency (80.68%) are obtained at low electric field. The increase of sintering temperature and holding time induces a red shift at 400 nm absorption edge and a blue shift at 300 nm absorption edge in the Nd-BCTH ceramics, and all ceramics have a maximum absorption value at around 260 nm. Under the excitation of 269 nm light, the Nd-BCTH ceramics show the strongest fluorescence peak at 473 nm, corresponding to the (4)G(3/2)-> I-4(9/2) transition, emitting indigo blue fluorescence. When the ambient temperature is above 400 ?, grains conduction dominates the conductive mechanism in the nano-sized Nd-BCTH ceramics. Such conduction can be attributed to oxygen vacancies caused due to the evaporation of alkaline-earth metals during high temperature sintering, and show typically thermally excited relaxation process. Morphology and atomic-scale surface structure of barium titanate nanocrystals formed at hydrothermal conditions

Abstract:BaTiO3 (BT) nanocrystals were synthesized by a hydrothermal method at 220°C, and their crystal structure, morphology, and surface structure were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and high-resolution TEM (HRTEM), respectively. The results of XRD and Raman spectroscopy indicated that the BT nanocrystals are of tetragonal phase at room temperature. SEM and TEM images showed that the larger Ba/Ti molar ratios in the precursors led to the formation of larger nanocrystals with a cubic morphology. HRTEM images revealed that the cubic nanocrystals were bound by their {100} faces. A core–shell surface structure was observed in the nanocrystals, where the shell layer was cubic with a thickness in the range 2–3.5nm, and the core was a bulk tetragonal. The interface structure between the shell and the core was coherent without any interfacial dislocation. At rough edges of the nanocrystals, their {110} edges were faceted by {100} planes in a form of few atomic layers wide steps, showing some degree of ledge-kink reconstruction. These microstructural results enable ones to achieve nanocrystals with controlled size and morphology.

Abstract:One-dimensional La(OH)(3) nanocrystals with multiform morphologies have been successfully synthesized by a facile bydrothermal process without using any surfactant, catalyst, or template. It can be found that the pH values of the initial solutions and the alkaline sources play a crucial role in controlling the morphologies of the products. The possible formation process of the 1D samples was investigated in detail, Furthermore, the as-prepared Tb3+-doped La(OH)(3) samples show a strong green emission corresponding to D-5(4)-F-7(5) transition of the Tb3+ ions under ultraviolet or low-voltage excitation. The experimental results indicate that the luminescence properties of the as-obtained phosphors are dependent on their morphologies and sizes. As a result of the unique luminescence properties and controllable morphology and size, these phosphors may find potential applications in fields such as optoelectronic and nanoscale devices or biological technology. High-pressure synthesis, crystal structure and photoluminescence properties of a new terbium silicate: Na2Tb1.08Ca2.92Si6O18H0.8

Abstract:The crystal properties of a terbium silicate Na2Tb1.08Ca2.92Si6O18H0.8 synthesized at 1 GPa and 800 degrees C using a piston-cylinder apparatus is reported. Our single-crystal X-ray analysis shows that this new compound is triclinic with the space group (P) over bar1 (Z = 1), and its unit-cell parameters are a = 7.056(3) angstrom, b = 7.075(3) angstrom, c = 8.029(3) angstrom, alpha = 102.381(5)degrees, beta = 95.387(6)degrees, gamma = 90.552(6)degrees, and V = 389.6(2)angstrom(3) . This structure consists of octahedral double chains of the compositions [Ca0.875Tb0.125O6] and [Ca0.585Tb0.415O6]. The double chains are linked by tetrasilicate chains via vertex oxygen atoms to form a 3D framework with 6-membered (2 octahedra and 4 tetrahedra) ring channels along the beta-axis where the Na+ cations locate. The luminescence properties of the Na2Tb1.08Ca2.92Si6O18H0.8 phase are also investigated. This phase, with most of its Tb in 3+, emits mainly from one transition, D-5(4) -> F-7(5) (542 and 552 nm). The room temperature fluorescence decay curves are fit well by an exponential function, yielding a lifetime value of about 2.498(7) ms.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline barium titanate was synthesized by the hydrothermal technique at low temperature and atmospheric pressure. The lattice vibration, phase structures, microstructures and luminescence spectra were examined by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. Grain sizes of 28–48nm were obtained from the (200) diffraction peak via the Scherrer equation. A critical size of 48nm was found, below which the ferroelectric transition vanishes. The c/a ratio equals 1.003, much smaller than 1.01 for a single crystal, showing a weakening of ferroelectricity. A strong photoluminescence (PL) spectrum centered at 696nm was observed in nanocrystal barium titanate. Both the annealing-temperature and annealing-time dependence of the luminescence spectrum were investigated, the origin for the PL being attributed to charge transfer via intrinsic defects inside the oxygen octahedron. An optimum synthesizing temperature in the hydrothermal technique is found at 80°C, at which the as-prepared nanocrystal barium titanate shows an excellent lattice structure and the strongest PL at room temperature.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline barium titanate was synthesized by hydrothermal technique at ambient pressure and at temperatures less than 100°C. A temperature of 80° was found to be the optimum synthesizing temperature. The lattice vibration, microstructures and photoluminescence were examined by X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The grain sizes ranging from 24 to 48nm were obtained under heat treatment, from X-ray patterns via Scherrer formula. The critical size of 48nm was found, below which the ferroelectric phase vanishes. Small tetragonality c/a ratio was found to be 1.003, causing a weakening of ferroelectricity. Strong photoluminescence spectrum centered at 696nm was observed with the origin being attributed to charge transfer via intrinsic defects inside oxygen octahedron. Strengthening in PL spectra with increasing both annealing temperature and time, is related to the increase in oxygen vacancies and the grain size in the nanocrystal barium titanate.

Abstract:A novel CaNb2O6 hierarchical micro/nanostructure was successfully fabricated under mild hydrothermal conditions in the absence of templates or organic additives. In this hierarchical micro/nanostructure, the nanosheets grow vertically on the surface of the one-dimensional microneedles whose axial direction is along the c-axis, and the single crystalline nanosheets are parallel to the (020) planes. A two-step nucleation-growth mechanism is proposed to explain the formation of the CaNb2O6 hierarchical micro/nanostructure, based on the observation of a time-dependent morphology evolution process. The hierarchically structured CaNb2O6 exhibits a stronger enhancement of photocatalytic activity in the degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) than other morphological CaNb2O6 samples, such as nanoparticles, nanoribbons, and microneedles. This simple hydrothermal method provides a new general approach for the synthesis of potentially useful niobates.

Abstract:Uniform and well-dispersed BaMoO4 hierarchical microspheres and microflowers have been synthesized via a simple surfactant-assistant hydrothermal route. The as-synthesized BaMoO4:Ln3+ (Ln=Eu, Tb, Dy, and Sm) phosphors show intense characteristic emissions under ultraviolet light excitation.

Abstract:Nanocrystalline BaTiO3 (BT) particles were synthesized via hydrothermal method, and their microstructure was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), and high-resolution TEM (HRTEM). The results show that the BT nanoparticles remain a metastable cubic structure at room temperature, as revealed by XRD and SAED. Such an abnormal crystallographic phenomenon was caused by the lattice defects such as OH− defects and barium vacancies. The BT nanoparticles exhibit a spherical morphology with an average grain size of 70nm, and narrow particle size distribution. HRTEM images of individual particles indicate that the BT nanoparticles have a good crystallinity and smooth surfaces. However, dark-field TEM images revealed high strains in BT nanoparticles, which were probably resulted from the surface defects. Anti-phase boundaries were also observed in some BT nanoparticles, which were formed by the intersection of two crystalline parts with a relative displacement from each other by 12d100 or 12d111, as revealed by HRTEM images. Some local dark TEM contrast observed, near the pure edge dislocations with Burgers vector value of d110, was due to the existence of local strains around the pure edge dislocations.
