Abstract:Reductive amination of furfuryl alcohol, furfural and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) were carried out on various metal catalysts. Over Raney Ni catalyst, we obtained the highest furfurylamine yields of 81.8 % and 94.0 % from furfuryl alcohol in absence and presence of H-2, respectively. While furfural was used as the substrate, 100 % yield of furfurylamine could be achieved over Raney Ni under rather moderate conditions. Although 5-HMF was completely converted over all catalysts used, the highest yield of 2,5-bisaminomethylfuran (60.7 %) was obtained over Raney Ni at 160 degrees C in 12 h. The DFT calculations on the adsorption behavior of NH3 and H-2 on different metal surfaces showed that the difference of the adsorption energy between NH3 and H-2 on Ni is lower than those of other metals, indicating that less metal active sites on Ni surface is occupied by NH3, which leaves more active sites for dehydrogenation/hydrogenation reactions and in the end promotes the reductive amination reactions.
One-step Reductive Amination of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural into 2,5-Bis(aminomethyl)furan over Raney Ni.

Abstract:Simultaneous reductive amination of C=O and C-OH in 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into C-NH2 in 2,5-bis(aminomethyl)furan (BAMF) is challenging. In this work, reductive amination of C=O in HMF was firstly studied, in which HMF can be converted into 5-hydroxymethyl furfurylamine (HMFA) with a 99.5 % yield over Raney Co catalyst. BAMF was then directly synthesized with 82.3 % yield from HMF over Raney Ni catalyst at 160 degrees C for 12 h. An even higher yield of 88.3 % could be obtained through a stepwise reductive amination process, in which the reaction started at 120 degrees C for the first 2 h over Raney Co mainly for amination of C=O and then continued at 160 degrees C for another 10 h over Raney Ni mainly for amination of C-OH. Under optimized reaction conditions, the catalyst could be reused four times without obvious loss in catalytic performance. XRD and XPS characterization of the reused catalyst indicated that the formation of Ni3N and the adsorption of alkyl amines could be the main reasons for the deactivation of the catalyst. Moreover, plausible reaction pathways were proposed to originate the detected by-products according to the kinetic profiles.
Reductive Amination of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-Bis(aminomethyl)furan over Alumina-Supported Ni-based Catalytic Systems.

Abstract:Mono- and bimetallic Ni-based catalysts were prepared by screening 6 supports and 14 secondary metals for reductive amination of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) into 2,5-bis(aminomethyl)furan (BAMF), among which gamma-Al2O3 and Mn were the best candidates. By further optimization of the reaction conditions at 0.4 g catalyst loading for 0.5 g substrate of 5-HMF and 160 degrees C of reaction temperature, 10Ni/gamma-Al2O3 and 10NiMn(4 : 1)/gamma-Al2O3 achieved the highest BAMF yields of 86.3 and 82.1 %, respectively. Although the BAMF yield values were comparable with that over Raney Ni, the turnover frequencies based on the initial BAMF yield and unit weight of Ni for 10NiMn(4 : 1)/gamma-Al2O3, 10Ni/gamma-Al2O3, and Raney Ni were calculated as 0.41, 0.09, and 0.04 h(-1), respectively. X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed that the existence of MnOx well dispersed on the gamma-Al2O3 support and its electron transfer effect with Ni particles on the surface of the support contributed to the high efficiency and better recyclability for the five-time reused 10NiMn(4 : 1)/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst.

Abstract:Based on that the aqueous-phase reforming of methanol and liquid phase hydrogenation of furfural have similary reaction conditions (temperature, pressure and in the liquid phase) on the Raney Ni catalyst, liquid phase in-situ reduction of furfural with hydrogen from the aqueous-phase reforming of methanol were investigated. The combination of the two reactions (hydrogen production and hydrogenation) is optimized in terms of reaction temperature, the ratio of substrate, and the amount of catalyst. The in-situ hydrogenation furfural shows a higher selectivity for furfuryl alcohol than the traditional hydrogenation method with molecular H-2 under the optimal conditions, i.e., 120 degrees C, 0.8 MPa, and the volume ratio of H2O:CH3OH: C5H4O2 = 25:125:5. Thus it could provide a new route for the selective hydrogenation of furfural into furfuryl alcohol.

Abstract:Effect of metal nature on reductive amination was investigated with biomass‐based furfural as a typical substrate. Among the tested heterogeneous metal catalysts, cobalt proved to be the most effective metal for the synthesis of the corresponding primary amine. Under a relatively mild reaction condition, 98.9% yield of furfurylamine was obtained over Raney Co and it can be reused more than eight times without a significant decrease in the catalytic performance. By extensively studying the catalytic pathways and reaction mechanism, it is found that the selectivity to primary amine and secondary amine was governed by the relative rate of hydrogenolysis and hydrogenation of the Schiff base intermediate. The superiority of Raney Co in furfurylamine synthesis can be ascribed to its high efficiency on hydrogenolysis of the Schiff base intermediate and its low performance in the hydrogenation of the Schiff base, carbonyl group and furan ring. Furthermore, ammonia greatly promoted the catalytic hydrogenolysis of the Schiff base intermediate over Raney Co without obviously deactivated the metal active sites.

Abstract:Direct amination of bio-based furfuryl alcohol over metal catalysts provides an alternative route to produce furfurylamine without consuming expensive reducing reagents. The harsh and reductive condition of furfuryl alcohol amination, however, requires high durability and excellent resistance to side furan-ring hydrogenation for efficient catalysts, which is still substantially challenging to non-noble metals. We show here that alumina-encapsulated Ni catalysts prepared via a sol–gel method exhibited an outstanding and stable performance in selective amination of furfuryl alcohol to furfurylamine under mild NH 3 and H 2 partial pressures. Structural characterization unveiled that the alumina framework with appropriate mesopores effectively restrained the agglomeration of Ni nanoparticles and the side furan-ring hydrogenation. A volcano-type dependance of the intrinsic activity of Ni nanoparticles on their sizes was established with the maximum attained at about 5 nm, which correlated well with the redox ability of surface Ni sites. Kinetic assessments further indicated the kinetic relevance of furfural formation from furfuryl alcohol dehydrogenation, evidenced by quasi-zero and negative reaction orders on NH 3 and H 2 pressures, respectively. Combined with infrared spectroscopy, furfuryl alcohol was identified as the predominant adsorbed species with a nearly saturated coverage under reaction condition, consistent with the high susceptibility of furan-ring hydrogenations to H 2 pressure. As a consequence, a slight amount of inert Ag (0.05 wt%) was introduced onto the alumina-encapsulated Ni catalysts to weaken the adsorption of furfuryl alcohol and its derivatives, which suppressed the side over-hydrogenation reactions to an extremely low level without sacrificing catalytic activity significantly.

Abstract:Furfuryl alcohol is a widely-used organic chemical. Catalytic hydrogenation is currently used in the production of furfuryl alcohol from furfural, which has disadvantages of high hydrogen consumption and cost. Catalytic transfer hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol by Cu-Pd/Al2O3 in near-critical isopropanol was proposed in this study. Cu-Pd/Al2O3 catalysts with different Cu and Pd loading were prepared via co-precipitation and characterized with XRD and BET. Effects of Cu-Pd/Al2O3 catalyst composition, catalyst loading, furfural concentration, reaction temperature and reaction time on the catalytic transfer hydrogenation were investigated. The results show that the 18%Pd/Cu-2%/Al2O3 bimetallic catalyst has the best catalytic activity. 100% furfural conversion and 86.4% furfuryl alcohol yield are achieved with 18%Cu-2%Pd/Al2O3 at 190℃ for 3 h. Good catalytic activity is maintained after 4 recycling use. The method proposed has advantages of zero hydrogen consumption, high furfuryl alcohol yield and good catalyst reusability.

Abstract:Non-noble metal catalyzed transfer hydrogenation of biomass using biomass-derived formic acid (FA) as hydrogen source is one of promising strategies for relieving fossil energy crisis. Since acidic FA would destroy and deactivate naked active sites, developing heterogeneous catalysts with stabilized structure and activity that are qualified in harsh conditions is highly desirable but challenging. Herein, mesoporous N-doped carbon encapsulated Co catalysts (Co-N-C) are synthesized through a facile carbonization of Co(phen)(2)(OAc)(2) with nano-MgO as porogen agent. After acid treatment, the optimized Co-N-C-700 (pyrolyzed at 700 degrees C) could afford full furfural (FAL) conversion as well as > 99% furfuryl alcohol (FOL) selectivity with only 3.5 equiv. FA at 150 degrees C for 6 h, exhibiting much superior performance than commercial Pd-, Pt- and Ru-based catalysts. Using molecular H-2 as hydrogen source not only affords low conversion but also leads to over-hydrogenation of FOL and generation of furfuryl formate (FF). This catalyst is very stable in acidic FA and could be recycled 5 times without deactivation or leaching. Co-N-C-700 is also capable for gram-scale transfer hydrogenation of FAL and is versatile for other aldehydes with > 90% yield of desired products. This work could promote the application of encapsulated Co-based catalysts for selective transformation of biomass in chemical industry.

Abstract:2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (2,5-FDCA) produced from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) is a promising renewable alternative to terephthalic acid. In this work, we prepared a Cu-Ni bimetallic catalyst with a CuNi(OH)(2) structure by incipient wetness impregnation. This catalyst gave a 9.2 mA cm(-2) current density for 5-HMF oxidation at 1.45 V vs RHE. Finally, 100 % conversion of HMF with 93.3 % yield of 2,5-FDCA was obtained.

Abstract:The reductive amination of furfural to furfurylamine is an important and still challenging topic in the field of biomass conversion. In this work, we prepared a series of Ni/Al2O3-LaOx catalysts by co-precipitation method, the role of La played in promoting the catalytic performances of reductive amination furfural was discussed based on the changes in the electronic state of Ni species, acidity, and Ni particle size. The catalytic activity and the selectivity of furfurylamine are highly dependent on the surface properties and the structure of the catalyst. The addition of La promoted the amount of strong acidic sites and the H2 dissociation and spillover on the surface, thus inducing the improvement of the catalytic activity and furfurylamine selectivity. The Ni/Al2O3-0.5LaOx catalyst with suitable acid sites gave a high yield of furfurylamine (94.9%) under mild reaction conditions. Moreover, the catalyst could be recycled five times without significant loss in activity. The Ni/Al2O3-LaOx catalyst is of great promise in the production of amines via reductive amination reaction.

Abstract:The synthesis of primary amines via reductive amination in the presence of NH 3 and H 2 , as a green and sustainable process, has attracted much attention. In this paper, we prepared series of Ni/SiO 2 catalysts with deposition-precipitation and impregnation methods, and their catalytic performances on the reductive amination of a biomass derived compound of furfural to produce furfurylamine were studied. The catalytic activity and the yield were correlated to the structure and the surface properties of catalysts largely. The Ni/SiO 2 is of high Lewis acidity and small Ni particle with numerous large Ni flat step surface showed high activity and selectivity, it afforded a reaction rate of 12.8 h −1 and a high yield to furfurylamine around 98%. These results are superior to the most non-noble metal catalysts reported so far. Moreover, the reaction route was examined with the unit control reactions of the intermediate. To produce furfurylamine selectively, the most suitable catalyst should have the moderate but not the highest activity in activation of hydrogen and hydrogenation in the reductive amination of furfural. This work provides some useful information for the catalytic reductive amination of aldehydes both in the design of catalyst and the reaction route.

Abstract:Amines are widely used in the manufacture of pharmaceuticals, agricultural chemicals, polymers, and surfactants. However, amines are mostly produced via petrochemical means, which motivates amine production from renewable resources, such as biomass. However, biomass compounds present added challenges involving poor carbon balances. We show that furfural reacts homogeneously with ammonia to produce reactive primary imines, which form large side products and leads to significant carbon losses. The carbon balance is improved by mixing furfural with furfurylamine prior to reaction to form a secondary imine for use as the reaction substrate. While controlling the primary to secondary amine selectivity is a common challenge in reductive amination, supported metal catalysts, including Ni/SiO2, Co/SiO2, and Ru/SiO2 optimize the primary amine yield to 90 to 94% by using the secondary imine as the reaction substrate. A qualitative correlation between the primary to secondary amine selectivity with the nitrogen binding energy of metals is identified.

Abstract:The direct/reductive amination of carbohydrate-based furoin and furil with NH3/H2 was investigated to access amine derivatives. In the sole presence of NH3, cyclic amines, i.e. 2,3,5,6-tetra(furan-2-yl)pyrazine and 2,2'-bipyridine-3,3'-diol, were generated as main products from furoin and furil, respectively. Over Ru/Al2O3 under NH3/H2, 2-amino-1,2-di(furan-2-yl)ethan-1-ol (i.e. alcohol-amine) was generated as main product with 47% yield at 140 °C for 2 h starting from furoin. The catalyst could be recycled for at least three consecutive runs. An alcohol-imine was the main intermediate that undewent tautomerization to alcohol-enamine/keto-amine leading to cyclic by-products by self-condensation. Supported by DFT calculations, the reactivity of the alcohol-imine intermediate was rationalized by its preferential adsorption on Ru centers via the NH group with the OH group pointing away from the surface, resulting in the formation of alcohol-amine as main product. By combining Ru/Al2O3 and a silica-anchored N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) catalyst, 2-amino-1,2-di(furan-2-yl)ethan-1-ol could be accessed with 42% overall yield in a single reactor.

Abstract:One-pot tandem reductive amination from biomass furfural to furfurylamine requires excessive hazardous NH3 feedstock to improve selectivity, which is not favorable from industrial application and environmental perspective. Herein, we proposed a strategy that utilizing the characteristics of layered double hydroxides to obtain a catalyst which ensures the spatial proximity of four-coordinated Al3+ (Al4c) and six-coordinated Al3+ (Al6c) as complementary functional sites and keep a certain distance with Ru metal sites. The as-synthesized Ru/Ni1MgAlOx catalyst obtained 91.3% yield of furfurylamine under low NH3:furfural ratio of 3:1. The Al4c and Al6c sites were identified to activate NH3 and nitrogenous intermediate respectively, their spatial proximity and appropriate proportion ensured activated intermediate reacting with NH3 preferentially then hydrogenolysis to produce primary amine. This work presented a prospective catalyst for furfurylamine production under low NH3 feeding industrial process and provided a feasible and universal catalyst design strategy for other tandem reactions.

RESULTS The Ni/SBA‐15 catalyst displayed higher catalytic selectivity in the reductive amination of HMF to AMF compared to other precious metal catalysts, such as Ru/C, Pd/C and Pt/C. The AMF yield of 89.8% was obtained at the relatively mild reaction temperature of 100 °C for 4 h. After the fifth cycle, an acceptable decrease in catalytic activity with 74.2% yield of AMF was observed. CONCLUSION An improved process was developed for preparing AMF by the reductive amination of HMF with aqueous ammonia using the non‐noble Ni/SBA‐15 catalyst. The high selectivity of nickel catalyst is attributed mainly to the moderate catalytic activity. Moreover, a small amount of water enhanced the yield of AMF by promoting the formation of ammonium ions to prevent the further side reaction of AMF with HMF. Surface Synergetic Effects of Ni–ReO x for Promoting the Mild Hydrogenation of Furfural to Tetrahydrofurfuryl Alcohol

Abstract:Ni–ReO x bimetallic catalysts (Ni–ReO x /TiO2) were prepared through a successive impregnation method, which is extremely active in furfural (FAL) hydrogenation to tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol (THFOL) under mild reaction conditions. For instance, high FAL initial reaction rate (439.4 mmol/g‑Ni/h) and THFOL formation rate (80.4 mmol/g‑Ni/h) were achieved over Ni–5ReO x /TiO2, which are 13.2 and 6.6 times higher than those of Ni/TiO2, respectively. The unique catalyst reactivity derives from rich Lewis acidic ReO x and intimate electron interaction of ReO x with Ni NPs. Kinetic studies reveal that ReO x decoration decreases the activation barrier of −CO hydrogenation other than the furan ring. Mechanism studies show that ReO x has a good affinity for CO and H2 and favors hydrogen spillover and CO bond activation on Ni, thus reinforcing the synergistic effect of Ni and ReO x . This catalyst is versatile for various furan aldehydes and is relatively stable for 5 times recycling, showing relative potential for industrial application.

Selective Conversion of Furoic Acid Derivatives to Multi‐Substituted Furanacrylate by a Ruthenium Catalyst

Abstract:Furanacrylate derivatives, as a class of multi-substituted furan compounds, have been widely used in drug synthesis, organic functional materials, novel polymer monomers, etc. In this paper, direct alkenylation and decarboxylation-alkenylation of furoic acid derivatives to furanacrylate were carried out by efficient [Ru(p-cymene)Cl-2](2) catalyst. The effects of reaction parameters on product distribution were investigated and discussed in detail. Up to 76 % and 80 % isolated yield of furanacrylate by direct alkenylation and decarboxylation-alkenylation of furoic acid derivatives were obtained at 80 degrees C and 125 degrees C, respectively. A good substrate compatibility was disclosed through the screening of substrate scope. Meanwhile, Ru(II) or Cu(II) was essential for decarboxylation according to the control experiments. This opened a new general route from biomass-derived compounds to functionalized multi-substituted furan compounds.
Reductive Amination of Furanic Aldehydes in Aqueous Solution over Versatile Ni y AlO x Catalysts

Abstract:We disclose in this study a Ni6AlO x catalyst prepared by coprecipitation for the reductive amination of biomass-derived aldehydes and ketones in aqueous ammonia under mild reaction conditions. The catalyst exhibited 99% yield toward 5-aminomethyl-2-furylmethanol in the reaction of 5-hydroxymethyl furfural with ammonia at 100 °C for 6 h under 1 bar H2. The catalyst was further extended to the reductive amination of a library of aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes and ketones with a yield in the range 81-90% at optimized reaction conditions. Besides, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural could react with a library of primary and secondary amines with yields in the range 76-88%. The catalyst could be easily recycled and reused without apparent loss of activity in four consecutive runs.

Abstract:Furfurylamine converted from biomass-based platform molecules furfural was proven a significant intermediate in the synthesis of different valuable compounds. The combination of Ruthenium with HZSM-5 was acted as an excellent selective and reusable catalyst for the reduction amination of furfural with environmentally friendly ammonia and hydrogen. Incorporation of Ru species into HZSM-5 had a significant enhancement to the acid sites of Ru/HZSM-5. The Ru/HZSM-5(46) catalyst with optimized acid sites and interaction of the Ru-O-Al bond displayed an excellent catalytic performance, producing 76 % yield of furfurylamine at only 15 min, and could be recycled five times without loss of performance. Synergistic effect between RuO2 and metallic Ru in the Ru/HZSM-5 catalyst facilitated the reduction amination of furfural.
