Abstract:The effective cleavage of C-O bonds in linkages of lignin was one of the significant strategies promoting lignin valorization. Herein, the strategy of C-O bonds cleavage of lignin using metal triflate as the catalyst was developed. The carboxylic acid or alcohol could be used as the nucleophile to stabilize the reactive intermediates formed during the depolymerization of lignin, and the corresponding ester/ether compounds could be obtained. This catalytic system was suitable for the C-O bond cleavage in α-O-4 and β-O-4 linkages with excellent efficiency. Additionally, reaction conditions were optimized. The reaction mixture was detected by 1 H NMR, and no other byproducts were found. As for treated lignin samples, the cleavage of C-O bonds in linkages was determined by 2D HSQC NMR, the increased content of the phenol hydroxyl group was proved by FT-IR, and the reduced molecular weight was investigated by GPC. Furthermore, multiple phenolic compounds were detected by GC-MS in the reaction mixtures.

Abstract:Hydrogenolysis has emerged as one of the most effective means of converting polymeric lignin into monoaromatic fragments of value. Reported yields may be higher than for other methods and can exceed the theoretical yields estimated from measures of the content of lignin's most readily cleaved alkyl-aryl ether bonds in beta-ether units. The high yields suggest that other units in lignin are being cleaved. Diaryl ether units are important units in lignin, and their cleavage has been examined previously using simple model compounds, such as diphenyl ether. Herein, the hydrogenolysis of model compounds that closely resemble the native lignin 4-O-5 diaryl ether units was analyzed. The results provided unexpected insights into the reactivity and partial cleavage of these compounds. The models and lignin polymer produced not only monomers, but also unusual 1,3,5-meta-substituted aromatics that appear to be diagnostic for the presence and the cleavage of the 4-O-5 diaryl ether unit in lignin.

Abstract:Lignin, the planet's most abundant renewable source of aromatic compounds, is difficult to degrade efficiently to welldefined aromatics. We developed a microwave-assisted catalytic Swern oxidation system using an easily prepared catalyst, MoO2Cl2(DMSO)(2), and DMSO as the solvent and oxidant. It demonstrated high efficiency in transforming lignin model compounds containing the units and functional groups found in native lignins. The aromatic ring substituents strongly influenced the selectivity of -ether phenolic dimer cleavage to generate sinapaldehyde and coniferaldehyde, monomers not usually produced by oxidative methods. Time-course studies on two key intermediates provided insight into the reaction pathway. Owing to the broad scope of this oxidation system and the insight gleaned with regard to its mechanism, this strategy could be adapted and applied in a general sense to the production of useful aromatic chemicals from phenolics and lignin.

Abstract:Depolymerisation of lignin to aromatics is a challenging task. We herein report that a Cu(OAc)2/BF3·OEt2 catalyst is effective in simultaneously cleaving C–C bonds in β-1 and β-O-4 ketones, yielding esters and phenols. In-depth studies show that C–H bond activation is the rate determining step for C–C bond cleavage. BF3·OEt2 promotes the reaction via activating the β-C–H bond. This study offers the potential to obtain aromatic esters from lignin.

Abstract:Lignin, characterized by its amorphous, heavily polymerized structure, is a primary natural source of aromatic compounds, yet its complex constitution poses considerable challenges in its transformation and utilization. Therefore, the selective cleavage of C–C bonds represents a critical and challenging step in lignin degradation, essential for the production of high-value aromatic compounds. In this study, we report a simple electrocatalytic approach for lignin valorization via C–C bond cleavage by developing a nonmetallic electrocatalyst of carbon-based materials. It is found that the hydrophilicity and hydrophobicity of the electrocatalyst have a significant effect on the degradation process. Under mild conditions, the hydrophilic carbon paper exhibits 100% substrate conversion, yielding 97% benzaldehyde and 96% quinone with ionic liquid electrolytes. The mechanism study shows that the carbon catalyst with higher surface defects favors electron transfer in the oxidative cleavage process of C–C bonds. These results signify a substantial advancement in lignin degradation, offering an environmentally friendly, metal-free electrochemical route.

Abstract:It is challenging to realize the selective C‐C bond cleavage of lignin β‐O‐4 linkages for production of high‐value aromatic chemicals due to its intrinsic inertness and complex structure. Here we report a light‐driven, chlorine‐radical‐based protocol to realize the oxidative C‐C bond cleavage in various lignin model compounds catalyzed by commercially available TPT and CaCl2, achieving high conversion and good to high product yields at room temperature. Mechanistic studies reveal that the preferential activation of Cβ‐H bond facilitates the oxidation and C‐C bond cleavage of lignin β‐O‐4 model via chlorine radical. Furthermore, this method is also applicable to the depolymerization of natural lignin extracts, furnishing the aromatic oxygenates from the cleavage of Cα‐Cβ bonds. This study provides experimental foundations to the depolymerization and valorization of lignin into high value‐added aromatic compounds.

Abstract:Lignin valorization to aromatic fine chemicals requires selective cleavage of a high-energy C-C bond under mild conditions. Herein, we report the efficient and selective C-C bond cleavage of lignin model substrates through a chlorine (Cl) atom as the hydrogen atom transfer agent generated by visible-light excitation of the metal-free photocatalyst perylene diimide. With the assistance of the Cl atom, the overall yield of C-C bond cleavage products in model substrate beta-O-4 linkages reached 82.5% under visible-light excitation. This work makes use of metal-free photocatalysts and ubiquitous chloride as an alternative sustainable method for lignin depolymerization.

Abstract:Because of the complex structure and inherent inert chemical activity of lignin, it is still challenging to depolymerize lignin to obtain valuable chemicals efficiently. Here, we present an FeCl3-promoted photocatalytic depolymerization strategy to realize the Cα-Cβ oxidative cleavage of lignin model compounds at room temperature. The method generates benzoic acid and phenol compounds in high yields. In addition, the method is effective for the depolymerization of organosolv lignin by cleavage of the products of Cα-Cβ bonds and affords the corresponding products. This strategy provides a method of using an economical photocatalyst to depolymerize lignin and provides a reference for the industrial depolymerization of lignin.

Abstract:Selective cleavage of the beta-O-4 ether bond of lignin to produce aromatics is one of the most important topics for the sustainable production of chemicals from biomass. A simple system has been developed for C-alpha-C-beta bond cleavage of a beta-O-4 ketone-structured lignin model compound (LMC) by H2O2 in formic acid under metal catalyst-free conditions. By using this simple system, with H2O2, formic acid, and mineral acid catalyst, over 90 % product yield is achieved in 6 h at room temperature. The reaction proceeds through the classic Baeyer-Villiger oxidation and in situ-generated performic acid serves as the key oxidant. The cleavage of alcoholic LMCs by using the presented method in a two-step process is also demonstrated.

Abstract:Herein, 2-(2-methoxyphenoxy)-1-phenylethanol (β-O-4), 2-methoxyphenyl anisole (α-O-4) and 4-phenoxyphenol (4-O-5) were selected as typical lignin model compounds. Given the effectiveness of traditional acid–base catalysts for lignin depolymerisation, a novel Ni/CaO–H-ZSM-5(60) catalyst was prepared to investigate the difficulty level of C–O bond of three model compounds cleavage in ethanol. It was observed that Ni/CaO–H-ZSM-5(60) had prominent performance on the C–O bond cleavage at very mild conditions (140 °C, 1 MPa H2). Among them, the C–O bond of α-O-4 and β-O-4 could be completely cleaved within 60 min. Although the C–O bond of 4-O-5 had high bond energy, 41.2% of conversion was occurred in 60 min. The introduction of CaO could regulate the acidity of H-ZSM-5 to enhance the ability to break C–O bonds. Moreover, the possible pathways of C–O ether bonds in three lignin model compounds cleavage were proposed in order to selectively obtain target products from the raw lignin degradation.

Abstract:Lignin in lignocellulosic biomass is the only renewable source for aromatic compounds, and effective valorization of lignin remains a significant challenge in biomass conversion processes. We have performed density functional theory calculations and experiments to investigate the cleavage mechanism of the C–O ether bond in the lignin model compound 2-phenoxy-1-phenylethanol with a β-O-4 linkage over a Pd(111) catalyst surface model. We propose the favorable reaction pathway to proceed as follows: the dilignol reactant gets dehydrogenated first on the α-carbon and then on the −OH group to generate its corresponding ketone 2-phenoxy-1-phenylethanone; the ketone continues to get dehydrogenated on the β-carbon by first a equilibrated keto–enol tautomerization to its enol form and then −OH dehydrogenation; the C–O ether bond cleavage happens afterward, leading to one-aromatic-ring surface intermediates followed by hydrogenation to yield acetophenone and phenol.

Abstract:The catalytic degradation of lignin to value-added chemicals has received considerable attention over the past decade. Photocatalysis provides promising approaches to enable previously inaccessible transformations. However, examples of the visible-light promoted degradation of lignin are still limited. In this work, the visible-light-induced selective C-C bond cleavage of beta-O-4 lignin model compounds has been disclosed via beta-scission of in situ generated alkoxy radical intermediates. With cyanobenziodoxolone as the oxidant, a variety of substrates could be transformed into aldehydes in moderate to good yields. Abstract:Lignin represents the most abundant and sustainable aromatic resource to produce value-added aromatics. However, an efficient and selective cleavage of recalcitrant C–C bonds in lignin under mild conditions remains challenging. Photocatalysis has emerged as a promising strategy for such a C–C bond cleavage under ambient conditions, although the activity and selectivity need to be further improved. Herein, using polyimide as a photocatalyst, we report an efficient and selective C–C bond cleavage in a β-O-4 lignin model under visible light at room temperature. The lignin model was converted into aromatic products with >99% substrate conversion and >99% C–C bond cleavage selectivity, which are superior to previously reported photocatalytic systems. Experimental investigations together with theoretical calculations indicated that the superior performance of the polyimide photocatalyst was attributed to its strong photooxidation capability and efficient charge carrier separation efficiency. Mechanistic studies revealed that the dehydrogenation of the lignin model driven by photogenerated holes was the rate-determining step. This work provides useful guidance for the design of high-performance photocatalysts for selective C–C bond cleavage of lignin.

Carbon–carbon Bond Cleavage for a Lignin Refinery

Abstract:Carbon–carbon bonds, ubiquitous in lignin, limit monomer yields from current depolymerization strategies, which mainly target C–O bonds. Selective cleavage of the inherently inert σ-type C–C bonds without pre-functionalization remains challenging. Here we report the breaking of C–C bonds in lignin obtained upon initial disruption of labile C–O bonds, achieving monocyclic hydrocarbon yields up to an order of magnitude higher than previously reported. The use of a Pt (de)hydrogenation function leads to olefinic groups close to recalcitrant C–C bonds, which can undergo β-scission over zeolitic Brønsted acid sites. After confirming that this approach can selectively cleave common C–C linkages (5–5′, β–1′, β–5′ and β–β′) in lignin skeletons, we demonstrate its utility in the valorization of various representative lignins. A techno-economic analysis shows the promise of our method for producing gasoline- and jet-range cycloalkanes and aromatics, while a life-cycle assessment confirms its potential for CO2-neutral fuel production. Carbon–carbon bonds are ubiquitous in lignin, limiting monomer yields from current depolymerization strategies mainly targeting C–O bonds. Now, a bifunctional hydrocracking approach uses a Pt/zeolite catalyst to break C–C bonds in lignin waste, achieving monocyclic hydrocarbon yields up to 54 C%.
Redox-neutral Photocatalytic Strategy for Selective C–C Bond Cleavage of Lignin and Lignin Models Via PCET Process

Abstract:It remains challenging to achieve the selective cleavage of C-C bonds in lignin or lignin model compounds to produce aromatic products in high yield and selectivity. We have developed a redox-neutral photocatalytic strategy to accomplish this goal in both beta-O-4 and beta-1 lignin models at room temperature (RT) via proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) process without any pretreatments of substrate, by adjusting the alkalinity of base to obtain a lignin models/base PCET pair with a bond dissociation free energy close to 102 kcal/mol. Without breaking down C-beta-C-gamma bond and any C-O bonds, this PCET method is 100% atom economy and produces exclusive C-alpha-C-beta bond cleavage products, such as benzaldehydes (up to 97%) and phenyl ethers (up to 96%), in high to excellent yields and selectivities. Preliminary studies indicated that the PCET strategy is also effective for the depolymerization of native lignin at RT, thus providing significantly important foundation to the depolymerization of lignin. Efficient cleavage of CαCβ bonds in lignin using tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate as both the catalyst and auxiliary electrolyte

Abstract:Lignin is a promising alternative to fossil resources due to its abundance of benzene ring monomers. However, the stability of the CαCβ bond in lignin has hindered its efficient depolymerization. Electrochemical methods for breaking this bond are not well-studied. This paper presents a novel approach for catalytic depolymerization of lignin to produce acetals under mild conditions, without the need for additional catalysts. Under room temperature and in an air atmosphere, the combination of tetrabutylammonium tetrafluoroborate (TBABF4) as an auxiliary electrolyte and methanol (MeOH) as a solvent has shown high selectivity in catalyzing the cleavage of CαCβ bonds in lignin. Over 90.0 % of the resulting products are acetals, with the optimal conditions being a substrate concentration of 0.02 M, TBABF4 concentration of 0.008 M, a constant current of 30 mA, and a reaction time of 3 h. This led to a substrate conversion rate of 95.8 % and a product yield of 98.0 % for benzaldehyde dimethyl acetal (Bda). The mechanism study reveals that the tributyl ammonium radical cation decomposed by TBABF4 is adsorbed on the electrode surface. Subsequently, the adsorbed O2 is activated to form superoxide anion radical active species through single electron transfer, which plays a crucial catalytic role. TBABF4 acts as both an auxiliary electrolyte and a catalyst in this process. This research introduces a novel approach for electrocatalytic depolymerization of inert CαCβ bonds in lignin, leading to the selective conversion into acetal chemicals.

Abstract:Lignin is an alternative renewable feedstock for the production of low molecular weight aromatics. The cleavage of phenyl side-chain CαCβ bond is a valid depolymerization pathway to obtain aromatic monomers. The selective cleavage of the CαCβ bonds in two lignin model dimers and lignin with ferric sulfate as the catalyst was investigated to narrow the distribution of aromatic monomers. The CαCβ bonds in phenolic and non-phenolic dimers were selectively cleaved under microwave irradiation. The acidity promoted the etherification of Cα-hydroxyl groups with methanol solvent. Both the etherification and the decomposition of alkenyl products occurred in fast reaction steps, but the formation of alkenyl products was a decomposition-determining step. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicated that the phenolic dimer was more thermodynamically favorable to form alkenyl product than non-phenolic dimer, which resulted in the CαCβ bond cleavage reactivity of phenolic dimer being higher than that of non-phenolic dimer. Microwave heating contributed to 96.3% of CαCβ bond cleavage of organosolv lignin (OL), and a narrow distribution of aromatic monomers which mainly contained vanillin, syringaldehyde, methyl vanillate, and methyl syringate. This work highlights the prospect of microwave-assisted selective cleavage of the CαCβ bond to achieve the selective production of aromatic monomers from lignin.

Abstract:Cleavage of ether bonds is a crucial but challenging step for lignin valorization. To efficiently realize this transformation, the development of robust catalysts or catalytic systems is required. In this study, montmorillonite (MMT)-supported Ru (denoted as Ru/MMT) is fabricated as a dual-functional heterogeneous catalyst to cleave various types of ether bonds through transfer hydrogenolysis without using any additional acids or bases. The prepared Ru/MMT material is found to efficiently catalyze the cleavage of various lignin models and lignin-derived phenols; cyclohexanes (fuels) and cyclohexanols (key intermediates) are the main products. The synergistic effect between electron-enriched Ru and the acidic sites on MMT contributes to the excellent performance of Ru/MMT. Systematic studies reveal that the reaction proceeds through two possible reaction pathways, including the direct cleavage of ether bonds and the formation of intermediates with one hydrogenated benzene ring, for all examined types of ether bonds, namely, 4-O-5, alpha-O-4, and beta-O-4.

Abstract:A novel strategy for the oxidative cleavage of C-C and C-O bonds in a series of model substrates including beta-O-4 lignin model compounds using CuCl2/polybenzoxazine composites catalysts with H2O2 as oxidant at room temperature showed good conversions (up to 88%) and an over 96% total selectivity to aromatic monomers within 2 h. This approach then succeeded in application to actual lignin depolymerization monitored by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), H-1 NMR, and 2D-NMR (HSQC). The results suggest that lignin can be effectively degraded into an array of functionalized dimer trimeric aromatic acids, aldehydes, phenols, etc., obtained from the selective cleavage of aliphatic C-C and C-O bonds in the major linkages beta-O-4' aryl ethers, resinols, and p-hydroxycinnamyl alcohols while leaving the natural aromaticity intact. Furthermore, the mechanistic insights into the catalytic reactions reveal a two-electron transfer process involved with a phenoxy radical, and an oxidation-then-cleavage route proposed for lignin depolymerization. The clean process, mild reaction conditions, and high aromatics selectivity indicate that it is a promising heterogeneous catalytic system for oxidative depolymerization of lignin to valuable aromatic chemicals.
