Abstract:The application of transition metal fluorides as energy-dense cathode materials for lithium ion batteries has been hindered by inadequate understanding of their electrochemical capabilities and limitations. Here, we present an ideal system for mechanistic study through the colloidal synthesis of single-crystalline, monodisperse iron(ii) fluoride nanorods. Near theoretical capacity (570 mA h g−1) and extraordinary cycling stability (>90% capacity retention after 50 cycles at C/20) is achieved solely through the use of an ionic liquid electrolyte (1 m LiFSI/Pyr1,3FSI), which forms a stable solid electrolyte interphase and prevents the fusing of particles. This stability extends over 200 cycles at much higher rates (C/2) and temperatures (50 °C). High-resolution analytical transmission electron microscopy reveals intricate morphological features, lattice orientation relationships and oxidation state changes that comprehensively describe the conversion mechanism. Phase evolution, diffusion kinetics and cell failure are critically influenced by surface-specific reactions. The reversibility of the conversion reaction is governed by topotactic cation diffusion through an invariant lattice of fluoride anions and the nucleation of metallic particles on semicoherent interfaces. This new understanding is used to showcase the inherently high discharge rate capability of FeF2. The application of metal fluorides as cathodes for lithium ion batteries has been hindered by inadequate understanding of their electrochemical capabilities. Reversible conversion reaction in iron fluoride nanocrystals is shown to be due to topotactic cation diffusion and nucleation of metallic particles.

Abstract:Transition metal fluorides display the combination of high capacity and high electrode potential that are essential to boosting the energy density of lithium ion batteries. However, their application as cathode materials has been hindered by an incomplete understanding of their electrochemical capabilities and limitations. Herein, we present a system of single crystalline, monodisperse iron (II) fluoride nanorods and detail how their morphology and uniformity make them ideal for mechanistic study. High-resolution analytical transmission electron microscopy reveals intricate morphological features, lattice orientation relationships, and oxidation state changes that redefine the conversion reaction with unprecedented spatial resolution. We first introduce the presence of surface specific reactions and examine how they critically influence phase evolution, diffusion kinetics and cell failure. Next, we examine how the reversibility of the conversion reaction is governed by topotactic cation diffusion through an invariant lattice of fluoride anions and the nucleation of metallic particles on semi-coherent interfaces. We will focus on how each mechanistic feature establishes new principles for improving reaction hysteresis, kinetics and reversibility and how this new holistic understanding can inform the more effective application of metal fluorides. To ensure a pertinent result, ex-situ data was extracted from coin cells that deliver near theoretical capacity (570 mAh g-1) and extraordinary cycling stability (>90 % capacity retention after 100 cycles). This exceptional performance was enabled solely through the use of an ionic liquid electrolyte. Using a combination of impedance spectroscopy, TEM, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we explain how the solid electrolyte interphase forming ability of this electrolyte precludes the major failure mechanisms associated with transition metal fluorides. We conclude this talk by examining the complementary nature of this cathode electrolyte pairing, particularly with regards to high-temperature cycling. Figure 1
Metal-organic Framework Derived FeS/MoS2 Composite As a High Performance Anode for Sodium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Considering the superior performances of MOF-based and MoS2-based materials, a flower-like FeS/MoS2 composite is synthetized using MIL-100(Fe) as a precursor. Electronic density of states and band structure are simulated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations, which prove that FeS/MoS2 heterostructure exhibits metallic behavior. Unique structure and powerful hetero-interface synergistic effect of FeS/MoS2 is conducive to improve the stability of sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). It provides reversible capacities of 464 and 365 mA h g(-1) at 0.1 and 1.0 A g(-1). When the current density increases to 5 A g(-1), FeS/MoS2 delivers a high capacity of 325 mA h g(-1) with a capacity retention rate (71.1%). Moreover, it can maintain a stable specific capacity of 331 mA h g(-1) at 2.0 A g(-1) after 200 cycles. Adsorption energy calculated by DFT indicates that more Na atoms may be trapped on the top of Mo atom between FeS and MoS2 layers. This study may stimulate the interesting of multivariate-MOFs/covalent organic frameworks (COFs) composite emerging two-dimensional materials and facilitate the application of composite electrode in high-performance SIBs. Abstract:A comprehensive strategy for the morphological control of octahedral and spindle Fe-based metal-organic frameworks (Fe-MOFs) via microwave-assisted adjustment is proposed in this research. Afterward, in situ copyrolysis under N2 atmosphere contributes to the fabrication of two shape-maintained FeF3·0.33H2O nanostructures (named O-FeF3·0.33H2O and S-FeF3·0.33H2O, respectively) with confined hierarchical porosity and graphitized carbon skeleton. The lithium storage performances for the MOF-derived octahedral O-FeF3·0.33H2O and spindle S-FeF3·0.33H2O composites are investigated, and the prospective lithium storage mechanism is discussed. As a result, the main product of the porous O-FeF3·0.33H2O structure is found to be a promising cathode material for lithium ion batteries owing to its advantageous electrochemical capability. Even after being cycled over 1000 times at 2 C (1 C = 237 mAh g-1), the capacity attenuation rate of the as-prepared O-FeF3·0.33H2O electrode is as low as 0.039% per cycle. The combination of proper octahedral morphology and highly graphitized carbon modification can not only enhance the conductivity of the cathode but also promote the diffusion of Li+ effectively. The remarkable performance of octahedral O-FeF3·0.33H2O can be confirmed by the Li-ion diffusion coefficient (DLi+) calculation analysis and kinetics analysis of lithium storage behavior.
F-Doped NaTi2(PO4)3/C Nanocomposite As a High-Performance Anode for Sodium-Ion Batteries.

Abstract:We are presenting a sol-gel method for building novel nanostructures made of nanosized F-doped Na1-2 xTi2(PO4)3- xF x (NTP-F x, x = 0, 0.02, 0.05, and 0.10) particles embedded in three-dimensional (3D) carbon matrices (NTP-F x/C). This technique combines advantages of both zero-dimensional materials and 3D-carbon networks. Proper fluorine doping stabilizes the NTP structure and greatly enhances ion/electron transportation, leading to superhigh-rate electrochemical performance and ultralong cycle life. The composite electrode delivers high specific capacities of 121, 115, 112.2, 110.1, 107.7, 103.1, 85.8, and 62.5 mA h g-1 at 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 30 C, respectively. It retains an unbelievable ∼70% capacity after a thousand cycles at a rate as high as 10 C. Electroanalytical results reveal that fluorine doping significantly enhances Na+ diffusion kinetics. Meanwhile, density functional theory calculations demonstrate F-doped NTPs' own outstanding electrochemical properties, which is due to the enhanced intrinsic ionic/electronic conductivity. The results show that anion doping is an efficient way to make high-performance NTP anodes for sodium-ion batteries.
Ultrasmall Iron Fluoride Nanoparticles Embedded in Graphitized Porous Carbon Derived from Fe‐Based Metal Organic Frameworks As High‐Performance Cathode Materials for Li Batteries

Abstract:Iron-based metal organic framework (MOF) MIL-53 is used as a precursor and self-template to synthesize a 3D porous carbon/FeF3 center dot 0.33H(2)O composite in situ. We find that the organic ligands in iron-containing MOFs can convert into highly graphitized carbon with the catalysis of central Fe atoms. The FeF3 center dot 0.33H(2)O nanoparticles formed after fluorination and dehydration are surrounded by highly graphitized carbon. In the composite, the graphitized 3D porous carbon can provide passageways for electron transport and ultrasmall FeF3 center dot 0.33H(2)O nanoparticles facilitate the diffusion of Li ions. The composite shows excellent performance for the Li storage. A capacity of 86 mAhg(-1) can be reached at an ultra-high rate of 20 C. Even after 300 charge discharge cycles at 5 C, the capacity remains at 113 mAhg(-1).

Abstract:FeF3/C nanocomposites, where FeF3 nanocrystals had been dispersed into a porous carbon matrix, were successfully fabricated by a novel vapour-solid method in a tailored autoclave. Phase evolution of the reaction between the precursor and HF solution vapour under air and argon gas atmospheres were investigated. The results showed that the air in the autoclave played an important role in driving the reaction to form FeF3. The as-prepared FeF3/C delivered 134.3, 103.2 and 71.0 mA h g(-1) of charge capacity at a current density of 104, 520, and 1040 mA g(-1) in turn, exhibiting superior rate capability to the bare FeF3. Moreover, it displayed stable cycling performance, with a charge capacity of 196.3 mA h g(-1) at 20.8 mA g(-1). EIS and BET investigations indicated that the good electrochemical performance can be attributed to the good electrical conductivity and high specific surface area that result from the porous carbon matrix.

However, their high-energy characteristics are clouded by low-capacity utilization, large voltage hysteresis, and poor cycling stability of transition MF cathodes. A variety of reasons is responsible for this: poor reaction kinetics, low conductivities, unstable MF/electrolyte interfaces and dissolution of active species upon cycling. Herein, we combine the synthesis of the metal–organic-framework (MOF) with the low-temperature fluorination to prepare MOF-shaped CoF2@C nanocomposites that exhibit confinement of the CoF2 nanoparticles and efficient mixed-conducting wiring in the produced architecture. The ultrasmall CoF2 nanoparticles (5–20 nm on average) are uniformly covered by graphitic carbon walls and embedded in the porous carbon framework. Within the CoF2@C nanocomposite, the cross-linked carbon wall and interconnected nanopores serve as electron- and ion-conducting pathways, respectively, enabling a highly reversible conversion reaction of CoF2. As a result, the produced CoF2@C composite cathodes successfully restrain the above-mentioned challenges and demonstrate high-capacity utilization of ∼500 mAh g–1 at 0.2C, good rate capability (up to 2C), and long-term cycle stability over 400 cycles. Abstract:Searching high capacity cathode materials is one of the most important fields of the research and development of sodium‐ion batteries (SIBs). Here, we report a FeO0.7F1.3/C nanocomposite synthesized via a solution process as a new cathode material for SIBs. This material exhibits a high initial discharge capacity of 496 mAh g−1 in a sodium cell at 50 °C. From the 3rd to 50th cycle, the capacity fading is only 0.14% per cycle (from 388 mAh g−1 at 3rd the cycle to 360 mAh g−1 at the 50th cycle), demonstrating superior cyclability. A high energy density of 650 Wh kg−1 is obtained at the material level. The reaction mechanism studies of FeO0.7F1.3/C with sodium show a hybridized mechanism of both intercalation and conversion reaction.

Abstract:Here, we report a novel material structure for sodium ion battery cathodes. The material has an enormously enhanced conductive framework of Na2FePO4F (NFPF), combining both 1D carbon nanotube (CNT) and 2D graphene nanosheets (GNs). Uniform Na2FePO4F nanorods were synthesized first via a one-step hydrothermal method. Then, the highly efficient conductive network of NFPF@CNT&GN was synthesized with a straightforward mechanical ball milling technique. The obtained NFPF@CNT&GN shows a reversible capacity of 67.5 mA h g(-1) at 10C rate, which exceeds all of the published results for NFPF to date. Remarkably, the degradation rate is only 0.02% per cycle even after 2500 cycles at the 5C rate. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy kinetic study demonstrates that the superior electrochemical properties for NFPF@CNT&GN should be attributed to the great improvement of the electronic conductivity and sodium-ion diffusion ability.

Abstract:Conversion-type lithium–metal fluoride batteries with high energy density, are considered to be very promising candidates for the next generation of low-cost lithium-ion batteries. Unfortunately, metal fluoride cathodes generally suffer from poor conductivity, sluggish reaction kinetics, and irreversible structural changes. Reducing particle size to nanoscale is an effective way to solve the large volume change and poor electronic conductivity of metal fluoride cathodes. In this study, a nano-control strategy was proposed, using n-propanol as an auxiliary solvent to achieve the conversion of micrometer-scale FeF3·3H2O to nanoscale FeF3·0.33H2O. Meanwhile, the particle size and morphology of iron fluorides could be controlled by regulating the synthesis temperature. The distribution of relaxation times (DRT) was used to analyze the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). FeF3·0.33H2O synthesized at 180 °C with lower resistance showed a high capacity of 200 mAh g−1 after 160 cycles with excellent rate performance and cycle stability.

Hierarchical Mesoporous Iron Fluoride and Reduced Graphene Oxide Nanocomposite as Cathode Materials for High-Performance Sodium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries have been considered as one of ideal power sources for energy storage system. However, the choice of cathode material with good cycling stability and high capacity is limited. Herein, a nanocomposite of hierarchical mesoporous iron fluoride and reduced graphene oxide is prepared by an in situ approach. The as-prepared nanocomposite exhibits remarkably high discharge specific capacity of 227.5 mAh/g at 0.1C. Specifically, the discharge specific capacity of the sample still remains 87.5 mAh/g at a high rate of 15C after the 100th cycle. The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) measurements show that the addition of reduced graphene oxide can effectively reduce the charge transfer resistance and enhance the Na+ diffusion rate in the FeF3·0.33H2O nanoparticles. The structural changes of FeF3·0.33H2O is further investigated by ex-situ XRD, XPS, and ex situ high-resolution transmission electron microscopy.

Abstract:In the present work, a new cathode material of Na2FexFe1 − x(SO4)2(OH)x is synthesized for sodium-ion batteries, and its morphologies and structures are characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). SEM results show that the morphology of Na2FexFe1 − x(SO4)2(OH)x is dumbbell-shaped nanorods with the length of about 1.3 μm and the width of 0.3–0.4 μm. The obtained material exhibits the initial reversible capacity that is 106 mAh g−1 and 154 mAh g−1 in the potential range 2.0~4.2 V and 1.5~4.5 V, respectively. After 65 cycles, the reversible capacity decreases to 74 mAh g−1 and 115 mAh g−1 with capacity retention of 70% and 74%, respectively, displaying an excellent cycle performance. Furthermore, the first charge process of Na2FexFe1 − x(SO4)2(OH)x electrode is investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) at different potentials, and the spectra exhibit four semicircles and a slightly inclined line that appear successively as the frequency decreases, representing the Na-ion migration in solid electrolyte interface film (SEI film), the electronic properties of materials, charge transfer, solid state diffusion, and phase transition. According to the results of equivalent circuit analysis, the change of kinetic parameters for desodiation process of Na2FexFe1 − x(SO4)2(OH)x electrode as a function of potential is discussed in detail.

Abstract:Carbon-encapsulated Fe3O4 composites were successfully fabricated via hydrothermal method and examined by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The Fe3O4@C nanocomposite as an anode material with novel structure demonstrated excellent electrochemical performance, with enhanced specific reversible capacity (950mAh/g at the current density of 50mA/g after 50 cycles), remarkable rate capability (more than 650mAh/g even at the current density of 1,000mA/g) and good cycle ability with less capacity fading (2.4% after 50 cycles). Two factors have been attributed to the ultrahigh electrochemical performance: Firstly, the 30- to 50-nm spherical structure with a short diffusion pathway and the amorphous carbon layer could not only provide extra space for buffering the volumetric change during the continuous charging–discharging but also improve the whole conductivity of the Fe3O4@C nanocomposite electrode; secondly, the synergistic effects of Fe3O4 and carbon could avoid Fe3O4 direct exposure to the electrolyte and maintain the structural stabilization of Fe3O4@C nanocomposite. It was suggested that the Fe3O4@C nanocomposite could be suitable as an alternative anode for lithium-ion batteries with a high application potential.
MOF derived ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles scattered in hollow octahedra carbon skeleton for advanced lithium-ion batteries

Abstract:Nanostructure design strategies are highly desired in lithium ion batteries due to the attractive properties of nanosizing. Herein, the hollow octahedra ZnFe2O4@C nanocomposites are synthesized through Zn-Fe MOFs as precursor and used as anode materials for lithium ion batteries. Notably, ZnFe2O4@C nanocomposites possess unique structure, where ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles (~20 nm) well scatters in each surface of the hollow octahedra carbon skeleton (~600 nm) and are also confined by coating carbon. This structure efficiently avoids particle agglomeration, buffers volume expansion, facilitates electron transfer and shortens diffusion lengths. Benefiting from above advantages, ZnFe2O4@C exhibits excellent electrochemical performance, including high specific capacity (1780 mAh g−1 at 1A g−1 after 400 cycles), superb rate capability (557 mAh g−1 at 15 A g−1) and ultra-long cycling stability (918 mAh g−1 at 3 A g−1 after 800 cycles). As much, this work may develop an effective nanostructure aiding in designing a variety of metal oxide/carbon composites of interest for energy storage applications.

Abstract:Sodium-ion batteries have attracted considerable attention in recent years. In order to promote the practical application of sodium-ion batteries, the electrochemical performances, such as specific capacity, reversibility, and rate capability of the anode materials, should be further improved. In this work, a Fe2O3/C composite with a well-ordered mesoporous structure is prepared via a facile co-impregnation method by using mesoporous silica SBA-15 as a hard template. When used as an anode material for sodium-ion batteries, the well-ordered mesoporous structure ensures fast mass transport kinetics. The presence of nanosized Fe2O3 particles confined within the carbon walls significantly enhances the specific capacity of the composite. The carbon walls in the composite act not only as an active material contributing to the specific capacity, but also as a conductive matrix improving the cycling stability of Fe2O3 nanoparticles. As a result, the well-ordered mesoporous Fe2O3/C composite exhibits high specific capacity, excellent cycleability, and high rate capability. It is proposed that this simple co-impregnation method is applicable for the preparation of well-ordered mesoporous transition oxide/carbon composite electrode materials for high performance sodium-ion and lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-metal fluoride batteries with higher energy density than commercial lithium-ion batteries are promising candidates for future energy storage. However, challenges such as poor electronic and Li + conductivity, active material dissolution, and volume expansion during cycling hinder their practical application. Here, a well-designed yolk-shell FeF 3 @C is aimed to address these issues. The outer carbon shell, derived from an organic carbon source, enhances the electronic conductivity of the embedded FeF 3 nanoparticles and protects them from unfavorable dissolution. The hollow design is utilized to provide sufficient space for FeF 3 nanoparticles to expand during cycling, preserving the carbon shell to not be destroyed. Post-mortem studies reveal the in-situ formation of Fe/O shell during cycling, which further prevents the loss and shuttle of Fe. Consequently, the FeF 3 @C nanocomposites deliver a capacity of 400 mAh g −1 at 1.0 C over 1500 cycles with a high capacity retention close to 95 %, and achieve super-rate capability up to 40 C. Moreover, the produced yolk-shell FeF 3 @C nanocomposites demonstrate air stability, which can simplify the manufacturing process of metal fluoride cathodes. Our study offers a promising direction for designing FeF 3 cathodes that achieve both outstanding electrochemical performance and air stability for practical Li-FeF 3 batteries.
