Abstract:Organo-lead-halide perovskite based solar cells have achieved remarkable advancements in power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) in recent years. Given their attractive properties, possible applications for perovskites are wide ranging and among others, particularly appealing for building integrated photovoltaics (BIPVs). In this study, patterned perovskite films were successfully fabricated based on a microsphere lithography SiO2 honeycomb scaffold template, which was derived by a combination of air-water interface self-assembly and O2 plasma etching. These patterned perovskite films exhibited near-neutral-color and tunable semitransparency, which meet the requisites of semitransparent solar cells for BIPVs application. O2 plasma etching of the microsphere template could effectively improve the active layer average visible transmission (AVT), and the existence of the SiO2 nanoscaffold effectively smoothed the internal trade-off of active layer AVT and device PCE. Solar cell devices fabricated with these optimized patterened perovskite films yielded a maximum PCE of 10.3% with relatively high active layer AVT of 38%. This nanoscaffold patterned perovskite opens up a new strategy for design and fabrication of functional photoelectric device based on organo-lead-halide perovskite.
Efficient Solar Cell Based on Semitransparent Film of Two-Dimensional Alternating Cation Perovskite

Abstract:Semitransparent perovskite solar cells are commercially desired for building integrated photovoltaic applications. However, the potentials for layered two-dimensional (2-D) perovskite for semitransparent devices have been seldom explored. Herein, using substrate at room temperature, we fabricate films and corresponding solar cells using quasi 2-D (C(NH 2 ) 3 )(CH 3 NH 3 ) 4 Pb 4 I 13 perovskites without additives in precursor solution, which is composed of same molar ratio of components, but three concentrations of 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6 mol/L (M) based on PbI 2 , respectively. Larger crystalline grain size and thicker film are obtained using higher concentration precursor solution. Meanwhile, 0.2 M solution can fabricate almost neutral-colored film with average visible transparency (AVT) of 48%, and its solar cell presents the best power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.5%; And 0.4 M solution can fabricate yellow-colored film with AVT of 46%, with its solar cell demonstrating the best PCE of 11.6%. This article proves that the alternating cations in the interlayer space 2-D perovskite will be one of promising candidates for single-junction semitransparent solar cells.
Synergy of transmittance fluctuation factor and absorption selectivity for efficient semitransparent perovskite/organic tandem solar cells with high color-fidelity

Abstract:Semitransparent solar cells are promising power-generating windows for building-integrated photovoltaics, and the color-fidelity is crucially important for their potential application. Herein, to obtain desirable neutral-colored perception while surmounting the single-junction efficiency barrier, a systematic method is introduced to design semitransparent tandem solar cells (ST-TSCs), and CsPbI2Br/PTB7-Th:IEICO-4F-based perovskite/organic tandem solar cells (P/O-TSCs) with outstanding color-fidelity are firstly reported. Above all, a numerical method, in which includes the fluctuation factor of external quantum efficiency (EQEff) within the visible range to select front-cell and the absorbing selectivity factor within near-infrared spectrum (SNIR) to assess the rear-cell, is established to construct device structure. Second, the theoretical transmittance fluctuation factor within the visible range (TFFVIS) and absorbing selectivity factor (S) are developed to evaluate ST-TSCs' color-fidelity and photovoltaic performance. Finally, PTB7-Th layer is introduced to passivate the halogen vacancy defects of CsPbI2Br. As a result, the neutral-colored semitransparent P/O-TSCs with a color coordinate of (0.344, 0.349) are achieved, which possess an efficiency of 13.56%, an average visible transmittance of 26.28% and a color rendering index of 96.4. The synergistic effects of transmittance fluctuation factor and light-absorbing selectivity open the path to design and fabricate semitransparent P/O-TSCs with balanced efficiency and good color neutrality.

Abstract:Semitransparent organic solar cells (ST-OSCs) are an important branch of organic solar cells, which have considerable application prospects in building photovoltaic, smart greenhouses, and clean energy vehicle sky-lights. However, a compromise between the power conversion efficiency (PCE) and the average visible transmittance (AVT) has been the obstacle in the field of ST-OSCs. Therefore, comprehensive consideration of PCE, AVT and the resulting light utilization efficiency (LUE), is very necessary to objectively evaluate the performance of a ST-OSC device. Herein, we report a facile strategy by combination of the advantages of the highly photo-voltaic materials with highly transparent materials to construct high performance ternary active layer for ST-OSCs. Two ternary systems PM6:PCE10-2F:Y6 and PCE10-2F:PM6:Y6 are developed according to their host bi-nary blends PM6:Y6 (w:w = 1:1.2) and PCE10-2F:Y6 (w:w = 1:2.5) respectively. The PCEs of the opaque and transparent devices are observed to be both improved in the ternary systems relative to their corresponding host systems, due to the complementary absorption, optimized morphology and charge dynamics. More importantly, combination of highly photovoltaic materials with highly transparent materials enables a well-balanced PCE and AVT, leading to significantly enhanced LUE. For PM6:PCE10-2F:Y6 devices, simultaneously improved PCE and AVT are obtained. Intriguingly, ST-OSC based on PCE10-2F:PM6:Y6 achieves an impressive PCE of 12.25 % and a high AVT of 36.57 %, which is the highest efficiency for the AVT over 30 %. A maximum LUE of 4.48 % is also a breakthrough of the ST-OSCs without complex photo-coupling layers. These findings demonstrate that combination of the high PCE system with high AVT system is a promising strategy for developing high performance ST-OSCs.
Highly Efficient Semitransparent Solar Cells with Selective Absorption and Tandem Architecture.

Abstract:Semitransparent (ST) photovoltaics (PVs) with selective absorption in the UV or/and near-infrared (NIR) range(s) and reduced energy losses, are critical for high-efficiency solar-window applications. Here, a high-performance tandem ST-PV with selected absorption in the desirable regions of the solar spectrum is demonstrated. An ultralarge-bandgap perovskite film (FAPbBr(2.43)Cl(0.57), E-g approximate to 2.36 eV) is first developed to fulfil efficient selective absorption in the UV region. After optimization, the corresponding ST single junction (SJ) PV exhibits an averaged transmittance (AVT) of approximate to 68% and an efficiency of approximate to 7.5%. By sequentially reducing the visible absorbing component in a low-bandgap organic bulk-heterojunction layer, an ST-PV with selective absorption in the NIR is achieved with a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 5.9% and a high AVT of 62%. The energy loss associated with the SJ ST-PVs is further reduced with a tandem architecture, which affords a high PCE of 10.7%, an AVT of 52.91%, and a light utilization efficiency up to 5.66%. These results represent the best balance of AVT and PCE among all ST-PVs reported so far, and this design should pave the road for solar windows of high performance.

Abstract:Solar cells based on organometal trihalide perovskite light absorbers have recently emerged as one of the most promising class of photovoltaic devices. Given their high performances, along with their low fabrication costs, such devices are appealing for building integrated photovoltaics, especially if made semitransparent and used as solar windows. In this study, efficient perovskite solar cells with high transparency in the visible spectrum have been developed. These devices comprise a dielectric–metal–dielectric multilayered top electrode with high transparency and conductivity, and an optimized solution-based thin and continuous methylammonium lead iodide film. Through this combination of processing and device architecture developments, semitransparent solar cells with high visible transmittance and record power conversion efficiency have been prepared, including devices with a perovskite thickness as low as 55nm.

Abstract:Semitransparent perovskite solar cells (ST-PSCs) have opened up new applications in tandem devices and building-integrated photovoltaics. Decreasing the thickness of the perovskite film makes it feasible to fabricate semitransparent perovskite layers. However, the formation of high-quality thin perovskite films has been a challenge during the film manufacturing process since the crystallization dynamics of thinner (<200 nm) films are different from that of thick films. In this article, we demonstrate a feasible method to fabricate a thinner layer of highly crystalline perovskites with low defect density for efficient ST-PSCs by introducing N-Ethylbenzylamine (EBA) to modify halide perovskites through Lewis acid-base interaction. As a result, a semitransparent solar cell based on EBA-treated perovskite with a film thickness of only ∼190 nm exhibits a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 14.77%, an average visible transmittance (AVT) of 13.2%, and an excellent light utilization efficiency (LUE) of 1.95%, which is the highest value in the ST-PSCs with Au as the electrode. Our findings highlight the effectiveness of the EBA additive in improving the photovoltaic performance of ST-PSCs, offering valuable insights into developing efficient and transparent photovoltaic technologies.

Abstract:Transparent photovoltaics are garnering significant interest for power generation in applications where light transmission is required. Metal halide perovskites have emerged as one of the most lucrative material classes for such device architectures due to their exceptional optoelectronic properties, and compositional versatility enabling a wide range of transparency levels. While research has primarily focused on semitransparent solar cell architectures, their colored appearance, and efficiency limitations hinder their practical applicability. In this perspective, we look at semiopaque perovskite solar cells as an alternative technological approach that comprises partially covered surfaces to enable light transmission. Our comparative analysis reveals that such semiopaque devices have the potential for superior efficiencies while maintaining a color-neutral appearance. These benefits are met with a number of hurdles, which provide key areas for future innovation to see the realization of such devices in real world applications.

Abstract:Abstract Metal halide perovskites are of great interest for application in semitransparent solar cells due to their tunable bandgap and high performance. However, fabricating high‐efficiency perovskite semitransparent devices with high average visible transmittance (AVT) is challenging because of their high absorption coefficient. Here, a co‐evaporation process is adopted to fabricate ultra‐thin CsPbI 3 perovskite films. The smooth surface and orientated crystal growth of the evaporated perovskite films make it possible to achieve 10 nm thin films with compact and continuous morphology without pinholes. When integrated into a p‐i‐n device structure of glass/ITO/PTAA/perovskite/PCBM/BCP/Al/Ag with an optimized transparent electrode, these ultra‐thin layers result in an impressive open‐circuit voltage (V OC ) of 1.08 V and a fill factor (FF) of 80%. Consequently, a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.6% with an AVT above 50% is demonstrated, which is the first report for a perovskite device of a 10 nm active layer thickness with high V OC , FF and AVT. These findings demonstrate that deposition by thermal evaporation makes it possible to form compact ultra‐thin perovskite films, which are of great interest for future smart windows, light‐emitting diodes, and tandem device applications.

Abstract:In this work, both anode and cathode interfaces of p‐i‐n CH 3 NH 3 PbI 3 perovskite solar cells (PVSCs) are simultaneously modified to achieve large open‐circuit voltage (V oc ) and fill factor (FF) for high performance semitransparent PVSCs (ST‐PVSCs). At the anode, modified NiO serves as an efficient hole transport layer with appropriate surface property to promote the formation of smooth perovskite film with high coverage. At the cathode, a fullerene bisadduct, C 60 (CH 2 )(Ind), with a shallow lowest unoccupied molecular orbital level, is introduced to replace the commonly used phenyl‐C 61 ‐butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) as an alternative electron transport layer in PVSCs for better energy level matching with the conduction band of the perovskite layer. Therefore, the V oc , FF and power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the PVSCs increase from 1.05 V, 0.74 and 16.2% to 1.13 V, 0.80 and 18.1% when the PCBM is replaced by C 60 (CH 2 )(Ind). With the advantages of high V oc and FF, ST‐PVSCs are also fabricated using an ultrathin transparent Ag as cathode, showing an encouraging PCEs of 12.6% with corresponding average visible transmittance (AVT) over 20%. These are the highest PCEs reported for ST‐PVSCs with similar AVTs paving the way for using ST‐PVSCs as power generating windows.
2‐in‐1 Optimization for High Performance Semitransparent Perovskite Solar Cells

Abstract:Semitransparent perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with bandgaps of 2.02 eV, 2.16 eV, and 2.32 eV are fabricated, achieving the champion power‐conversion efficiencies of 9.07%, 7.10%, and 7.56%, respectively. The corresponding average visible transmittances are 9.41%, 23.26%, and 43.47%, and crop growth factors are 21.25%, 29.48%, and 37.07%, respectively. Semitransparent PSCs are expected to be used in photovoltaic windows and greenhouses. Organic lead halide perovskites are regarded as qualified candidates for the photoactive layers of semitransparent solar cells. The critical aspect of boosting the performance of semitransparent perovskite solar cells (PSCs) to a higher level lies in preparing perovskite films with both excellent photoelectric properties and high transmittance. Herein, it is realized that, through theoretical analysis, perovskite materials with bandgap of 2.00–2.30 eV are suitable for the preparation of semitransparent PSCs that can simultaneously achieve low thermal‐energy loss, allow transmission of light for high photopic response, and provide acceptable transmittance for photovoltaic greenhouses. Then the study aims at improving the crystallinity and morphology of wide‐bandgap perovskite films by using additive engineering. As such, PSCs with absorber bandgaps of 2.02, 2.16, and 2.32 eV deliver maximum power‐conversion efficiencies of 12.08%, 9.17%, and 8.42%, respectively. Then the corresponding semitransparent PSCs are crafted with average transmittance of light detectable by the human eye of 9.41%, 23.26%, and 43.47%, respectively. Furthermore, the crop growth factors are predicted to be 21.25%, 29.48%, and 37.07%, respectively. This work gives full play to bandgap modulation in the fabrication of semitransparent PSCs, which will broaden the application of semitransparent solar cells in the field of building integrated photovoltaics.

Highly efficient bifacial semitransparent perovskite solar cells based on molecular doping of CuSCN hole transport layer

Abstract:Coper thiocyanate (CuSCN) is generally considered as a very hopeful inorganic hole transport material (HTM) in semitransparent perovskite solar cells (ST-PSCs) because of its low parasitic absorption, high inherent stability, and low cost. However, the poor electrical conductivity and low work function of CuSCN lead to the insufficient hole extraction and large open-circuit voltage loss. Here, 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4TCNQ) is employed to improve conductivity of CuSCN and band alignment at the CuSCN/perovskite (PVK) interface. As a result, the average power conversion efficiency (PCE) of PSCs is boosted by ≈ 11%. In addition, benefiting from the superior transparency of p-type CuSCN HTMs, the prepared bifacial semitransparent n–i–p planar PSCs demonstrate a maximum efficiency of 14.8% and 12.5% by the illumination from the front side and back side, respectively. We believe that this developed CuSCN-based ST-PSCs will promote practical applications in building integrated photovoltaics and tandem solar cells.

Abstract:Thanks to the tunable bandgap and excellent photoelectric characteristics, perovskites have been widely used in semitransparent solar cells (ST‐SCs). Most works present unsatisfactory power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) through reducing the thickness of the perovskite films because there is a trade‐off between PCE and average visible transmittance (AVT). As a consequence, most PCEs are less than 12% when the AVT is higher than 20% due to the limited voltage (Voc) and short‐circuit current (Jsc). Herein, a strategy of intermediate adduct (IMAT) engineering is developed to improve the film quality of the inorganic perovskite CsPbI2Br, which is a challenging issue to limit its performance of efficiency and stability. A normal n–i–p‐structured PSC based on the optimal CsPbI2Br film delivers a PCE of 16.02% with excellent stability. Furthermore, through optimizing the electrode type and interface, the ST‐PSC shows a high Voc larger than 1.2 V and the PCE reaches 14.01% and 10.36% under an AVT of 31.7% and 40.9%, respectively. This is the first demonstration of a CsPbI2Br ST‐PSC, and it outperforms most of other types of perovskites.

Abstract:Although inorganic hole-transport materials usually possess high chemical stability, hole mobility, and low cost, the efficiency of most of inorganic hole conductor-based perovskite solar cells is still much lower than that of the traditional organic hole conductor-based cells. Here, we have successfully fabricated high quality CH3NH3PbI3 films on top of a CuSCN layer by utilizing a one-step fast deposition-crystallization method, which have lower surface roughness and smaller interface contact resistance between the perovskite layer and the selective contacts in comparison with the films prepared by a conventional two-step sequential deposition process. The average efficiency of the CuSCN-based inverted planar CH3NH3PbI3 solar cells has been improved to 15.6% with a highest PCE of 16.6%, which is comparable to that of the traditional organic hole conductor-based cells, and may promote wider application of the inexpensive inorganic materials in perovskite solar cells.

Abstract:Flexible semitransparent perovskite solar cells (PVSCs) hold promising applications on buildings and unmanned vehicles with irregular surfaces. Efficient wide-bandgap PVSCs are a determining factor for building perovskite-based tandem cells, in which energy level alignment plays significant roles in reducing nonradiative recombination loss at interfaces. Here, we report on the fabrication of efficient flexible semitransparent wide-bandgap PVSCs with gradient energy level alignments at both electron- and hole-selective contacts. We design a triple-electron-selective contact as electron transport layers with gradient Fermi level alignment with the conduction band of wide-bandgap perovskite, which consists of trans-1,2-Diaminocyclohexane-N,N,N′,N′-tetraacetic (CyDTA), tin dioxide (SnO2), and CyDTA-complexed SnO2. Moreover, an ultrathin gold layer embedded between 2,2′,7,7′-tetrakis(N,N-bis(p-methoxy-phenyl)amino)-9,9′-spirobifluorene (spiro-OMeTAD) hole transport layer and molybdenum oxide protection layer facilitates effective hole transport to the anode. We conduct comprehensive and solid simulation at both charge-selective contacts to reveal the working mechanisms. The champion flexible semitransparent 1.75 eV wide-bandgap PVSC achieves an efficiency of 15.02% with excellent light transparency of around 70% beyond the wavelength of 700 nm, enabling all-flexible perovskite/Cu(In,Ga)Se2 tandem devices with efficiencies beyond 21%.

Abstract:Semi-transparent perovskite solar cells (ST-PSCs) engendered enormous attention for practical applications such as power generation windows. However, it is still challenging to achieve high-performance, robust and neutral-colored ST-PSCs. Herein we demonstrate a moth-eye-inspired structure (MEIS) for light-trapping photons in the wavelength range where the human eye is less perceptive. This biomimetic structure contributes to the improvements in ST-PSCs performance and visual appearance simultaneously. Consequently, a record high figure-of-merit for ST-PSC, defined as the product of power conversion efficiency and the average visible transmittance, is achieved. Meanwhile, the optical appearance is converted to a desired near-neutral color after introducing the MEIS. The investigation of ST-PSCs with long-term stability is implemented via engineering blend ratio of halides. The modified device exhibited appealing tolerance against moisture and solar irradiation. This work reveals an in-depth understanding of light trapping along with modifying the visual appearance of solar cells.
High Open Circuit voltage solar cells based on bright mixed halide CsPbBrI2 perovskite nanocrystals synthesized under ambient air conditions

Abstract:Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs) are currently emerging as one of the most interesting solution processed semiconductors since they possess high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY), and colour tunability through anion exchange reactions or quantum confinement. Here, we show efficient solar cells based on mixed halide (CsPbBrI2) NCs obtained via anion exchange reactions in ambient conditions. We performed anion exchange reactions in concentrated NC solutions with I-, thus inducing a PL red-shift up to 676 nm, and obtaining a high PLQY in film (65%). Solar cell devices operating in the wavelength range 350-660 nm were fabricated in air with two different deposition methods. The solar cells display a photo-conversion efficiency of 5.3% and open circuit voltage (Voc) up to 1.31V, among the highest reported for perovskite based solar cells with band gap below 2eV, clearly demonstrating the potential of this material.

Abstract:The application of low average layer-number (〈n〉 ≤ 2) 2D perovskites in semitransparent photovoltaics (ST-PVs) has been hindered by their strong exciton binding energy and high electrical anisotropy. Here, the phase distribution is expanded fully and orderly to enable efficient charge transport in 2D (NMA)2(MA)Pb2I7 (NMA: 1-naphthylmethylammonium, MA: CH3NH3+) perovskite films by regulating the sedimentation dynamics of organic cation-based colloids. Ammonium chloride is synergistically introduced to enhance the phase separation further and construct a favorable out-of-plane orientation. The wide and graded phase distribution well aligns the energy level to facilitate charge transfer. As a result, the first application of an average 〈n〉 = 2 2D perovskite is implemented in ST-PVs with visible power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 7.52% and high average visible transmittance (AVT) of 40.5%. This study offers a new candidate and an effective strategy for efficient and stable ST-PVs and is relevant to other perovskite optoelectronic devices.
