Abstract:A new photochromic diarylethene dyad based on perylene diimide (PDI-DTE) has been synthesized. The photochromic reaction of PDI-DTE induced the significant change of the absorption spectra and fluorescence intensity. The color of PDI-DTE in THF solution was not changed obviously upon ultraviolet irradiation, while the fluorescence intensity is increased unexpectedly with the photochromic cyclization of the diarylethene units. With not visible change of color accompanied to the enhanced fluorescence, PDI-DTE can be potentially applied to anti-counterfeiting technology.

Abstract:Photoresponsive materials, altering their properties such as color, luminescence, and luminescence lifetime under light as external stimulus, would be ideal candidates for application in fluorescent anti-counterfeiting and information encryption. In this paper, we develop a water-dispersive photo-stimuli response hybrid by encapsulating lanthanide complexes and photochromic molecules with an organosilicon material (OSM) via the reprecipitation-encapsulation method. Interestingly, repeated cycles of UV/Vis light irradiation switch the color and structure of photochromic molecules, which in turn influence the Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) between photochromic molecules and lanthanide complexes, resulting in reversible luminescence ON/OFF switches, accompanied by reduction and recovery of luminescence lifetime of Eu 3+ complexes. Considering the above-mentioned interesting characteristics, we realized the application of Eu(DBM) 3 ·phen/ suspension as a light-driven fluorescent ink for fingerprint depth encryption. We expect our findings can expand the application scope of photochromic luminescence materials and provide a powerful approach for information encryption and anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract:A new photochromic diarylethene bears two chiral carbon atoms was designed and synthesized. This compound keeps in liquid state at room temperature which is the first example for 1,2-dithienylalkene derivatives to our knowledge. Owning to the liquid state, this compound undergoes a much faster reversible photochromic reaction than some 1,2-dithienylalkene derivatives in solid state, at ambient temperature. In addition, the fluorescence property and the uses of this compound in photo switches and non-reductive storage material were discussed.

Abstract:Electron-donating triphenylamine and/or electron-withdrawing pyromellitic diimide (PMDI) are functionalized on dithienylethene (DTE) and three novel photochromic materials have been designed and successfully synthesized. All the compounds display reversible photochromism due to the molecular switching between ring-closed isomers upon UV light irradiation and ring-open isomers upon exposure to visible light. Thus they can be applied as an anti-counterfeiting ink. Moreover, the study of the photoswitching kinetics reveals that both the ring-closing and ring-opening reactions are first-order reactions. Further charge population analysis discovers that the electron densities of the substituents at the DTE core have a dramatic influence on the photochromic properties. The incorporation of electron-donating triphenylamine groups at the α-position of the thiophene rings in the DTE unit facilitates the ring-closing reaction upon UV light irradiation. In contrast, the substitution of an electron-withdrawing PMDI unit in the DTE unit is beneficial to the ring-opening reaction upon irradiation of visible light. This work may help to understand the photochromism of DTE derivatives and provide a pathway for designing DTE-based photochromes with more or less sensitivity to UV or visible light.
Invisible photochromism and on-off switch based on thiophene-imidazole fused derivatives: Synthesis, properties and applications

Abstract:Three novel diarylethene fluorescent molecules based on a thiophene-imidazole core have been successfully synthesized. Their photophysical properties, including photocyclization and ions response characteristics, as well as quantum chemical calculations were systematically investigated. All compounds exhibited significant invisible photochromism upon photocyclization, resulting in remarkable fluorescence “turn-off” properties. This phenomenon can be attributed to photoisomerization, specifically the transition from the open-ring isomer to the closed-ring isomer during this process, which was confirmed by 1H NMR data analysis. Moreover, AT-DPIo demonstrated high selectivity toward I− with pronounced changes in absorption from colorless to yellow and fluorescence from bright yellow to dark, enabling a limit of detection for I− at 9.75 × 10−7 mol L−1. These exceptional sensing properties make it suitable for rapid “naked-eye” detection of I− using test strips.

Abstract:Diarylethene (DAE)‐containing polymers have unique advantages (excellent thermal stability and fatigue resistance) over other photoresponsive polymers, such as azobenzene‐ and spiropyran‐containing polymers. DAE‐containing polymers are mainly classified into main‐chain polymers, side‐chain polymers, and crosslinked polymers, which have very promising applications in security information encryption, smart anti‐counterfeiting, light‐controllable adhesives, and photoinduced healable materials. Photoresponsive polymers have attracted increasing interest owing to their potential applications in anticounterfeiting, information encryption, adhesives, etc. Among them, diarylethene (DAE)‐containing polymers are one of the most promising photoresponsive polymers and have unique thermal stability and fatigue resistance compared to azobenzene‐ and spiropyran‐containing polymers. Herein, the design of DAE‐containing polymers based on different types of structures, including main chain polymers, side‐chain polymers, and crosslinked polymers, is introduced. The mechanism and applications of DAE‐containing polymers in anti‐counterfeiting, information encryption, light‐controllable adhesives, and photoinduced healable materials are reviewed. In addition, the remaining challenges of DAE‐containing polymers are also discussed.

Abstract:This review summarizes the recent progress of diarylethenes utilizing beyond‐photo stimuli to trigger the isomerization reaction from three perspectives: acidochromism, thermochromism, and electrochromism. The molecule design strategies and mechanism behind the cyclization and cycloreversion processes are discussed. The related applications are stated. Challenges and opportunities for the future development are also presented. Diarylethenes (DAEs) are typical photochemically reversible type (P‐type) photochromic materials with excellent thermal stability and high fatigue resistance and are widely exploited as photo‐switches for various applications in molecular devices, data storage, photoresponsive materials, and bioimaging, etc. In recent years, there is an increasing number of reports using heat, acid, electrochemistry, etc. to drive the isomerization reaction of DAEs. The response to two or more different stimuli enables multi‐functionality within a single DAE molecule, which would facilitate complex logic‐gate operations, multimode data storage, and increased information density. Herein, the recent advances in DAE systems utilizing stimuli "beyond photo" to trigger the isomerization processes from three perspectives: acidochromism, thermochromism, and electrochromism are reviewed. Emphasis is placed on the molecule design strategies and the underlying mechanisms for cyclization and cycloreversion processes addressed by the alternative stimulus. Then the noticeable applications made in multi‐stimuli responsive DAE systems are summarized. Additionally, the challenges and opportunities of DAE switches driven by stimuli "beyond photo" in the future are also discussed.

Abstract:All-visible light-activated diarylethene (DAE) photoswitches are highly attractive for applications in smart photoresponsive materials. Photocyclization of DAE via the low-lying excited triplet state through triplet energy transfer (TET) from a sensitizer has been proven as an effective approach for the realization of this scheme. However, TET process is sensitive to oxygen and typically requires more than one sensitizer per photoswitch to facilitate sensitized photocyclization. Herein, we present a bi-component system comprising carboxylic acid-functionalized DAEs and CdS quantum dots (QDs) to achieve all-visible light-activated photoswithing. Due to the large surface area-to-volume ratio of CdS QDs and surface anchored DAEs, one CdS QD can activate at least 18 DAE molecules in the solution without oxygen exclusion. The efficiency of photocyclization of DAEs under visible light irradiation through energy transfer from CdS QDs is nearly comparable to direct UV light irradiation. Moreover, our strategy is adaptable to solid-state performance exposed in the air, enabling reversible writing and erasing of color and patterns by adjusting irradiation wavelengths in the visible region.

Abstract:<p>The development of smart inks that change color and transparency in response to external stimuli is very important for various fields, from modern art to safety and anticounterfeiting technology. A uniaxially oriented diacetylene thin film on a macroscopic area is obtained by coating, self‐assembling and topochemical photopolymerizing of imidazolium‐functionalized diacetylenes (M‐DA and T‐DA) and 4,6‐decadiyne ink (70 wt%:20 wt%:10 wt%) exhibiting a lyotropic smectic A liquid‐crystalline phase at room temperature. The color and transparency of letters and symbols written with the DA‐based secret inks change reversibly from blue to red as well as from colorless transparent to black opaque depending on the temperature and polarization axis. A secret code written with thermoresponsive and polarization‐dependent secret inks consisting of imidazolium‐functionalized diacetylenes is successfully deciphered by wearing polaroid glasses and holding a flashlight.</p>

Temporal Dynamic Photochromic Materials for Advanced Anticounterfeiting

Abstract:The intriguing optical phenomena of photochromism and photoluminescence, when integrated into a solitary material, can offer innovative applications in optical memory devices and multimode anti-counterfeiting. However, the exploration and utilization of such materials with dynamic anti-counterfeiting still presents a substantial challenge. This study puts forth an innovative strategy to attain a convergence between the photochromic absorption peak and the photoluminescent emission peak, fundamental to the creation of high-efficiency dynamic anti-counterfeiting materials. By sintering in a reducing atmosphere, a large number of oxygen vacancies are introduced into Ba3MgSi2O8:Er3+ ceramics, which exhibits a reversible white-pink color change with excellent fatigue resistance upon alternate by 330 nm illumination and thermal stimulus. Furthermore, Ba3MgSi2O8:Er3+ ceramics ceramics demonstrates a distinct fluorescence emission, transitioning from yellow-green to orange to red under the 330 nm continuous irradiation. This fascinating behavior can be attributed to the fluorescence resonance energy transfer process, facilitating efficient energy transfer between the luminescent centers and coloring centers. The exceptional optical properties exhibited by Ba3MgSi2O8:Er3+ ceramics have enabled the successful implementation of dynamic anti-counterfeiting applications in this study. This advancement is anticipated to fuel endeavours towards luminescence modulation instigated by photochromism.

Abstract:Nucleosidic diarylethenes (DAEs) have evolved from an emerging class of photochromes into a well‐established option for integrating photochromic functionalities into biological systems. However, a comprehensive understanding of how chemical structure influences their photochromic properties remains essential. While structural features, such as an inverse connection between the aryl residues and the ethene bridge, are well‐documented for classical DAEs, their application to nucleosidic DAEs has been underexplored. In this study, we address this gap by developing three distinct types of inverse nucleosidic DAEs – semi‐inverse thiophenes, semi‐inverse uridines and inverse uridines. We successfully synthesized these compounds and conducted comprehensive analyses of their photostationary states, thermal stability, reversibility, and reaction quantum yields. Additionally, we conducted an in‐depth comparison of their photochromic properties with those of their normal‐type counterparts. Among the synthesized compounds, seven semi‐inverse thiophenes exhibited the most promising characteristics. Notably, these compounds demonstrated excellent fatigue resistance, with up to 96% retention of photochromic activity over 40 switching cycles, surpassing the performance of all comparable nucleosidic DAEs reported to date. These findings hold significant promise for future applications in various fields.

Abstract:Organic photochromic materials have received considerable attention because of their potential for photonic applications, especially for fast and high density data storage. In 2000, Chemical Reviews published a special issue on photochromic materials including a review about the properties and applications of diarylethene photochromic compounds. Since then much impressive progress has been made in this area. Various new diarylethene derivatives have been prepared and examined. The tutorial review presented herein describes developments in diarylethene-based molecular switches made in the last three years. In addition, the synthetic aspects of diarylethene photochromic compounds, which are important issues and neglected in most previous reviews, have been included.

Abstract:Diarylethene (DAE), the ubiquitous photochromic unit, is one of the most promising candidates for well-recognized optoelectronic applications. In this paper, the relationship between reversible photoisomerization/metallochromic properties and second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) responses for a new photochromism based on DAE with a benzyl-linked 8-aminoquinoline-2-aminomethylpyridine unit (1O) has been systematically investigated by using density functional theory. Our results show that closed-ring (1C) comprising DAE unit was shown to be capable of exhibiting both large static first hyperpolarizabilities βtot (1.075 × 10−28 esu) and large switch ratio βratio ~ 31 with corresponding open-ring because of the better delocalization of the π-electron system, the more obvious degree of charge transfer and the smaller transition energy in the closed-ring. When the metal ions have been injected in open-ring (1O*M), we observed a larger NLO response compared with the corresponding open-ring 1O. However, it can slightly decrease the βtot values in 1C*M. Natural bonding orbital and atom in molecules analysis provide a better understanding for the property differences in metallochromic process. We hope this research would be beneficial for further theoretical and experimental studies on large second-order NLO switches applications.

Abstract:In this study, a diethylamino methanone Schiff base ( HBAPE ) was reported. Its synthesis, quantum chemical calculations, photophysical behaviors containing aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) were systematically studied. More importantly, HBAPE exhibits photochromism in response to UV light via reversible tautomerism, where a remarkable color change in both absorption and emission was observed. Thermal treatment or visible-light exposure would activate the reverse reaction to restore the compound to its pristine state. The color change in the photochromic process is well quantified by RGB and CIE L * a * b * color space, and the latter exhibits high compatibility and accuracy owing to the utilization of the derived color shift (Δ E* Lab ). Based on Δ E* Lab analysis, the limits of detection (DL) are calculated to be as low as 6.2 μW/cm 2 (by manual color picking) and 2.6 μW/cm 2 (by chromatic meter measurement), suggesting high sensitivity towards UV radiation. We further develop a prototype of data-recording film that can write and erase binary data by UV and heating/visible-light, respectively. The data recording film shows high signal contrast by utilizing Δ E* Lab as the output, achieving nice rewritability. A strategy for data encryption-decryption was developed. With an inert compound as the background covering, the information can be concealed via heating or visible-light, and revealed by UV radiation, providing a reliable strategy for information safety.

Photochromic Spiropyran-Based Dual-Emitting Luminescent Hybrid Films for Dynamic Information Anticounterfeiting

Abstract:Photoluminescent materials are widely used for information storage and anticounterfeiting, while most of them have the disadvantages of static information performance and weak processability, which is still a challenging task in developing dynamic anticounterfeiting materials with high security levels. Herein, we fabricated a novel photostimuli-responsive dual-emitting luminescent material UPTES-SPn-Tb-hfa, which was obtained by introducing the photochromic molecule spiropyran (SP) and lanthanide complex (Tb-hfa) into a siloxane-polyether matrix using the sol-gel process. Due to the conformation-dependent photochromic fluorescence resonance energy transfer between the Tb-hfa donor and SP acceptor, the ring-closing (SP)/ring-opening (MC) isomerization of the SP unit leads to a reversible luminescence switching in UPTES-SPn-Tb-hfa. This composite material has great potential for advanced anticounterfeiting because of the advantage of rapidly repeatable encryption/decryption for at least 8 times and dynamic luminescent colors within 15 s. In addition, due to its two luminescent centers (Tb3+ and MC), the luminescent color of this material can be regulated by 254 and 365 nm UV-light irradiation, which facilitates the design of multicolored anticounterfeiting labels. Our work presents a novel design methodology to fabricate dynamic anticounterfeiting materials, significantly enhancing the security of anticounterfeiting applications.
Sterically Hindered Diarylethenes with A Benzobis(Thiadiazole) Bridge: Photochemical and Kinetic Studies

Abstract:Four rationally designed diarylethenes (DAEs) 1–4 with a benzobis(thiadiazole) bridge are specifically designed for gaining insights into steric effects on photochromic performances. It is shown that, upon increasing steric hindrance, the exchanging rate between two main conformers in the ring-open form gradually slows down, offering the opportunity for isolating photoactive anti-parallel conformers. Impressively, the separated anti-parallel conformer shows high cyclization quantum yields over the unresolved common DAEs. The typical donor–π–acceptor (D–π–A) feature in ring-open DAEs 1–4 endows their prominent fluorescence, which can be conveniently modulated by photocyclization. In the ring-closed form, the excess steric hindrance is found to seriously disrupt the thermal bistability, and particularly 3c fades quickly with a half-life of several hours at ambient temperature. In contrast, both 1c and 2c exhibit excellent stability, which originates from the stabilization effects of intramolecular hydrogen bonds. This work demonstrates the steric effects on the photochemical and kinetic behaviors of DAEs, providing a unique approach to develop photochromic DAEs with high photosensitivity.

Abstract:The photochromic diarylethene, 1,2-bis(2-methyl-5-(2,2′-dicyanovinyl)-thien-3-yl)perfluorocyclopentene (1a), was synthesized by a novel method. Two kinds of single crystals of the compound were obtained depending on the different recrystallization conditions and their structures were determined by X-ray crystallographic analysis. Allomorphism of the photochromic diarylethene was discovered. The compound underwent a photochromic reaction both in solution and in the single crystalline phase of the anti-parallel conformer.

Abstract:Diarylethene (DAE) photoswitches, known for their reversible photoinduced cyclization and cycloreversion reactions, have shown great promise in various fields such as optical data storage, optoelectronic devices, supramolecular self-assembly, anti-counterfeiting, chiral photoswitches, and photocontrolled catalysis. Recently, there has been a growing interest in utilizing DAEs as smart triggers to regulate biological events, highlighting their advantages over commonly studied azobenzene switches, including thermal irreversibility, high photoswitching efficiency, favorable cellular stability, and low toxicity. However, a comprehensive review specifically focusing on the biological applications of DAEs has yet to be reported. In this in-depth review, we present key modification strategies aimed at enhancing the photoswitching behavior of DAEs and optimizing their performance for biological applications. These strategies include achieving near-infrared (NIR) photochromism, enhancing aggregation-induced emission (AIE) performance, improving water solubility, enabling fluorescence “turn-on,” increasing cyclization yield, and enabling visible light triggering. Moreover, we highlight recent advancements in the use of DAEs as photoswitches in biological applications, covering areas such as photoswitchable fluorescence sensing and imaging, super-resolution imaging, photoswitchable nucleosides and oligonucleotides, photocontrolled photodynamic therapy, and regulation of biological activity in photopharmacology. Furthermore, we identify the current challenges hindering the bioapplications of DAEs and forecast the development trends of photochromic DAEs for potential biological applications. This comprehensive review aims to inspire further research and innovation in the development of novel DAE derivatives for future in vivo bioapplications.

Herein, we report the construction of photo-responsive supramolecular polymers toward fluorescent anti-counterfeit applications, by taking advantage of multicycle anthracene‒endoperoxide switching properties. Due to σ-metalation effect, photo-oxygenation of anthracene to endoperoxide is proceeded under the mild visible light irradiation conditions, while the backward conversion occurs spontaneously at room temperature. Supramolecular polymers are formed with cooperative nucleation‒elongation mechanism, which facilitate fluorescence resonance energy transfer process via two-component co-assembly strategy. Fluorescence resonance energy transfer efficiency is delicately regulated by either light-triggered anthracene‒endoperoxide conversion or vapor-induced monomer–polymer transition, leading to high-contrast fluorescent changes among three different states. On this basis, dual-mode anti-counterfeiting patterns have been successfully fabricated via inkjet printing techniques. Hence, cooperative supramolecular polymerization of photo-fluorochromic molecules represents an efficient approach toward high-performance anti-counterfeit materials with enhanced security reliability, fast response, and ease of operation.

Abstract:All visible-light-driven fluorescent photo-switches are essential for high-density optical memories, whereas their gated photochromism remains a great challenge. Herein, we report the synthesis and photochromic properties of 2,3-bis(2-methyl-1-benzothiophene-1,1-dioxide-3-yl)-thiophene (BTTO4) based photochromic diarylethene isomers oDB, mDB, and pDB functionalized with N,N-dimethylaniline at three positions. These compounds all exhibit turn-on fluorescence upon visible light irradiation at 405 nm. Surprisingly, the cycloreversion reaction of para-substituted closed-isomer c-pDB was suppressed. Upon addition of trifluoroacetic acid, the acidic compound c-pDB•H+ was turned active, displaying an unusual gated photochromic property. Moreover, the photochromic reactivity can be suppressed again by neutralizing the acid with Et3N. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of gated photochromic diarylethene with visible-light-triggered turn-on fluorescence. This study provides a new type of all-visible-light triggered fluorescent photo-switches, and a novel “lock” and “unlock” system for photocycloreversion reactions.
