Abstract:Designing highly efficient Pt-free electrocatalysts with low overpotential for the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) remains a significant challenge. In this paper, we successfully construct Ru-incorporated oxygen-vacancy-enriched MoO2 nanosheets (Ru/MoO2−x) for the HER through a “one stone two birds” strategy. This strategy can solve two urgent problems simultaneously, the intrinsic electrochemical activity of original MoO2 is far from satisfactory and the H2O adsorption/dissociation abilities of Ru are weak. Specifically, the oxygen-vacancy-enriched MoO3 serves as an excellent platform for anchoring and trapping Ru ions. In-depth analyses indicate that the incorporation of Ru nanoclusters induces transition from MoO3 to MoO2, generates oxygen vacancies, and creates Ru-O-Mo sites. The synergistic effect of Ru nanoclusters, Ru-O-Mo sites and oxygen-vacancy-enriched MoO2 will endow the obtained catalyst excellent electrocatalytic activity. In particular, the optimal Ru/MoO2−x electrocatalyst delivered a low overpotential of 29 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in a basic electrolyte.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media is a promising electrochemical energy conversion strategy. Ruthenium (Ru) is an efficient catalyst with a desirable cost for HER, however, the sluggish H2O dissociation process, due to the low H2O adsorption on its surface, currently hampers the performances of this catalyst in alkaline HER. Herein, we demonstrate that the H2O adsorption improves significantly by the construction of Ru–O–Mo sites. We prepared Ru/MoO2 catalysts with Ru–O–Mo sites through a facile thermal treatment process and assessed the creation of Ru–O–Mo interfaces by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS). By using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and H2O adsorption tests, we proved Ru–O–Mo sites have tenfold stronger H2O adsorption ability than that of Ru catalyst. The catalysts with Ru–O–Mo sites exhibited a state-of-the-art overpotential of 16 mV at 10 mA cm–2 in 1 M KOH electrolyte, demonstrating a threefold reduction than the previous bests of Ru (59 mV) and commercial Pt (31 mV) catalysts. We proved the stability of these performances over 40 h without decline. These results could open a new path for designing efficient and stable catalysts.

Abstract:Metal-support interactions play crucial roles in tailoring the activity and stability of catalytic active sites by virtue of electronic, geometric and compositional effects. Here, we report a hybrid electrocatalyst composed of ultrafine Ru nanoclusters uniformly anchored on mesoporous Mo2N nanorods (Ru–Mo2N) for highly efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). With a low Ru content of 4.1 wt%, Ru–Mo2N requires overpotentials of only 18 and 16 mV for affording a current density of −10 mA cm−2 in acidic and alkaline media, respectively. The outstanding performance has been revealed to originate from the interfacial electronic interactions between Ru and Mo2N, which induces charge redistribution at the interface region and slightly positive oxidation state of Ru. The downshift of the d-band center of Ru nanoclusters results in reduced binding strength to reactive intermediates and improved HER thermodynamics on Ru surface. This work has demonstrated that engineering the electronic interactions between catalyst and support is one promising route for constructing high-performance electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is the cathodic process of water splitting, and its reverse, the hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR), is the anodic process of an H2-O2 fuel cell; both play important roles in the development of hydrogen energy. The rational design and scalable fabrication of low-cost and efficient bifunctional catalysts for the HER/HOR are highly desirable. Herein, ultrasmall Mo-Ru nanoalloy (Mo0.5Ru3 and MoRu3) particles uniformly distributed on mesoporous carbon (MPC) were successfully synthesized by a simple method that is easy to scale up for mass production. After the incorporation of Mo atoms, the as-prepared Mo0.5Ru3 and MoRu3 nanoalloys maintain a hexagonal-close-packed crystal structure. In acidic media, Mo0.5Ru3 exhibits excellent Pt-like HER and HOR activity, as well as good stability. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the H adsorption free energy (ΔGH*) on the Mo0.5Ru3 (0 0 1) surface (−0.09 eV) is much closer to zero than that of metallic Ru (−0.22 eV), which contributes to the enhanced catalytic activity. In alkaline media, Mo0.5Ru3 also presents outstanding HER and HOR activity, even significantly outperforming Pt/C. The DFT results confirm that optimal binding energies with H* and OH* intermediate species, and low energy barriers in the water dissociation and formation steps, efficiently accelerate the alkaline HER/HOR kinetics of Mo0.5Ru3. This study provides a new avenue for the scalable fabrication of high-efficiency bifunctional electrocatalysts for the HER and HOR in both acidic and alkaline media.

Abstract:MoS 2 is a potential electrocatalytic material for its excellent durability and stability. Here, we investigate the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction performance of MoS 2 nanosheets decorated with size-controlled Ru nanoparticles. The MoS 2 compounded with 2.46 nm-Ru exhibits the good electrocatalytic performance with overpotential of 53 mV at 10 mA/cm 2 in 0.5 M H 2 SO 4 condition. The enhanced electrocatalytic activity of Ru@MoS 2 results from accelerated charge migration between the Ru metal and MoS 2 semiconductor, as well as the addition of Ru increases the number of active sites on the surface of MoS 2 . Furthermore, the first-principles calculations demonstrated the ΔG H* of Ru@MoS 2 (−0.05 eV) is lower than P–MoS 2 (2.04 eV) and the narrowed bandgap facilitates more efficient electron migration. And the theoretical calculations further reveal that the Ru nanoparticles with suitable size at the interface own the ideal ΔG H* by manipulating the D-band center of the Ru.

Abstract:Ruthenium has emerged as a viable electrocatalyst towards hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline media, where the performance can be further enhanced by slight weakening of H adsorption. Herein, nanocomposites with ruthenium nanoparticles dispersed on molybdenum oxide supported on nitrogen-doped carbon are synthesized via ultrafast magnetic induction heating at controlled currents for only 10 s, and exhibit evident HER activity in 1 M KOH. Among the series, the RuMoOx/NC-5 sample, with a Ru:Mo atomic ratio of ca. 3:1, shows the best performance, featuring a low overpotential of only -39 mV to reach the current density of 10 mA cm-2 and a low Tafel slope of 28.3 mV dec−1, which is markedly better than those of the monometal counterparts, samples with a lower Ru:Mo ratio, and even commercial 20 wt% Pt/C. This is attributed to weakened H adsorption on Ru active sites by the synergetic interactions between ruthenium and molybdenum oxide, as confirmed in theoretical studies based on density functional theory calculations.

Abstract:As a cheaper Pt-group metal, ruthenium (Ru) is a highly competitive alternative to Pt for commercialization towards the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Herein, we report the modulation effect on the Gibbs free energy (ΔGH∗) of hexagonal-close-packed (hcp) Ru resulting from heteroatom Mo doping. In particular, for the first time the hcp MoRu3 crystal structure is theoretically predicted with pretty high intrinsic HER activity. Meanwhile, the Mo hetero-dopant could act as a new active site with Pt-like ΔGH∗. Motivated by the prediction, we report a novel metal organic framework (MOF)-assisted synthetic strategy to prepare a Mo-doped hcp Ru electrocatalyst. Accordingly, the hcp MoRu3 catalyst exhibits an ultralow overpotential of 30.5 mV at 10 mA cm-2, ensuring excellent Pt-like intrinsic HER activity. More importantly, the excellent electrochemical performance measured with a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer further highlights the promising potential of the hcp MoRu3 catalyst for hydrogen production. © 2019 The Royal Society of Chemistry.

Abstract:The development of earth-rich, low-cost, and high-efficiency electrocatalysts toward alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in water spitting process is extremely desirable, yet it is still a huge challenge. In this work, we report the synthesis of a novel RuO2/MoS2 electrocatalyst with good conductivity and abundant active sites for efficient HER by uniformly dispersing RuO2 nanoparticles on MoS2 nanosheets. Benefitting from the intense electronic coupling effect endowed with interface modifications, the as-prepared RuO2/MoS2 electrocatalyst exhibits superior performance for HER in 1 M KOH with a rarely low overpotential of 36 mV at 10 mA‧cm-2 and a small Tafel slope value of 34.8 mV‧dec-1. Besides, the introduction of RuO2 nanoparticles further improves the durability of RuO2/MoS2 electrocatalyst with a negligible variation in a 20 h operation. More importantly, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations further reveal the mechanism of strong electronic interaction between RuO2 nanoparticles and MoS2 nanosheets, which contributes to accelerating the H2O dissociation kinetics and optimizing H adsorption Gibbs free energy. This work may provide a deeper understanding for designing efficient HER catalysts through interface modification strategies.

Abstract:The coordination chemistry of the metal-support interface largely determines the electrocatalytic performance of heterostructured electrocatalysts. However, it remains a great challenge to effectively manipulate the interface chemistry of heterostructures at the atomic level. Herein, functionalized carbon-supported Ru heterostructured electrocatalysts are designed that contain abundant RuN(O)C moieties with a view towards fast hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The coordination chemistry of the RuN(O)C moieties, and hence, the geometric and electronic structures of the Ru species can be precisely modulated via an appropriate annealing treatment. Specifically, the optimal heterostructured electrocatalyst delivers the highest specific activity by far among reported Ru-based electrocatalysts, and the turnover frequency value reaches 32 s−1 at the overpotential (η) of 100 mV, which also surpasses the state-of-the-art Pt/C catalyst in alkaline media. The interface engineering of the heterostructured electrocatalyst not only facilitates H2O adsorption and dissociation with help from the RuN(O)C moieties, but also further optimizes the adsorption behavior of H on the metallic Ru species, thereby inducing accelerated hydrogen evolution kinetics in both alkaline and acidic media. The present results demonstrate the successful atomic-level interface engineering of carbon-supported Ru-based heterostructures and shed new light on the development of advanced electrocatalysts for fast hydrogen evolution, and beyond.

Abstract:Improvement of intrinsic activity via P and Mo dual doping and sufficient exposure of active sites through ultrasmall nanoclusters endow low mass loaded Ru heterostructure toward efficient hydrogen evolution reaction. Rational design of efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts for mass production of hydrogen via electrochemical water splitting is a challenging but pressing task. Herein, an in situ dual doping engineering from phosphomolybdic acid encapsulated within the bimetallic metal‐organic‐frameworks strategy to synthesize P,Mo dual doped Ru ultrasmall nanoparticles embedded in P‐doped porous carbon (P,Mo‐Ru@PC) for efficient HER is proposed. As a result, P,Mo‐Ru@PC achieves a low overpotential of 21 at 10 mA cm−2, low Tafel slopes of 21.7 mV dec−1, and a mass activity about 22 times greater than that of commercial 20 wt% Pt/C in alkaline media. First principle calculations demonstrate that introducing Mo and P atoms into Ru lattices triggers the in situ electron donation from Ru to Mo and P and consequently reduces the energy barrier for the HER.

Abstract:Generally, electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is hampered by slow kinetics and low round-trip efficiency. Electrocatalysts with a hierarchical structure and large surface area are expected to overcome these problems. Herein, we prepared a Ru/MoO2/carbon nanotubes (RMC) hybrid with a hierarchical structure by a convenient solid-phase reaction (SPR) method, and studied the electrochemical activity for HER. After annealing as-prepared RuO2/MoO2/carbon nanotubes (ROMC) precursor in a tubular furnace under Ar atmosphere, RuO2 and MoS2 were in-situ transformed into Ru metal and MoO2 phase by the redox SPR. Through various tests, we have confirmed that the new formed Ru metal and MoO2 phase are combined and uniformly coated on the outer surface of CNTs. Interestingly, the RMC-500 exhibits the best HER performance with a low overpotential of 16 mV at l0 mA cm−2, small Tafel slope of 45 mV dec−1, higher electrochemical active surface area, and long-time durability in alkaline electrolyte.

Abstract:Rationally designing high-performance electrocatalysts with high density and multiactive sites is an effective strategy to accelerate the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) kinetics, yet it remains challenging. Herein, a catalyst comprising numerous Ru–Mo-based single atoms and subnanoclusters incorporated into a hierarchical macro-mesoporous carbon framework with a P-doped skeleton (Ru–Mo/PC) was successfully developed via a simple template-assisted pyrolysis method. Spherical aberration correction electron microscopy and X-ray absorption fine structure measurements revealed that the dual-active sites consisted of Ru–C5 single atoms and ultrasmall Ru–Mo nanoclusters (mean diameter of 0.94 nm). In particular, the as-constructed RuMo1.5/PC catalyst exhibited a high activity towards the HER, requiring an overpotential of only 17.9 mV at 10 mA/cm2, which outperformed a commercial Pt/C catalyst in alkaline media. Electrochemical performance results also indicated that introducing moderate Mo species played a crucial role in further boosting the HER activity compared to Ru/PC. The present work provides a step forward in designing efficient and stable catalysts with high-density, atomically dispersed active sites for hydrogen production.

Abstract:Heterostructures exhibit considerable potential in the field of energy conversion due to their excellent interfacial charge states in tuning the electronic properties of different components to promote catalytic activity. However, the rational preparation of heterostructures with highly active heterosurfaces remains a challenge because of the difficulty in component tuning, morphology control, and active site determination. Herein, a novel heterostructure based on a combination of RuMo nanoalloys and hexagonal N-doped carbon nanosheets is designed and synthesized. In this protocol, metal-containing anions and layered double hydroxides are employed to control the components and morphology of heterostructures, respectively. Accordingly, the as-made RuMo-nanoalloys-embedded hexagonal porous carbon nanosheets are promising for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), resulting in an extremely small overpotential (18 mV), an ultralow Tafel slope (25 mV dec(-1)), and a high turnover frequency (3.57 H(2)s(-1)) in alkaline media, outperforming current Ru-based electrocatalysts. First-principle calculations based on typical 2D N-doped carbon/RuMo nanoalloys heterostructures demonstrate that introducing N and Mo atoms into C and Ru lattices, respectively, triggers electron accumulation/depletion regions at the heterosurface and consequently reduces the energy barrier for the HER. This work presents a convenient method for rational fabrication of carbon-metal heterostructures for highly efficient electrocatalysis.
Ruthenium and Iron Co-doped Molybdenum Carbide as a Stable Hydrogen Evolution Electrocatalyst in Harsh Electrolyte

Abstract:Electrocatalytic water splitting is one of the most commercially valuable pathways of hydrogen production especially combined with renewable electricity; however, efficient and durable electrocatalysts are urgently needed to reduce electric energy consumption. Here, we reported a Ru and Fe co-doped Mo2C on nitrogen doped carbon via a controllable two-step method, which can be used for efficient and enduring hydrogen evolution reaction. At 10, 100 and 200 mA cm-2 in acidic electrolyte, the resultant Ru-Fe/Mo2C@NC delivered low overpotentials of 31, 78 and 103 mV, respectively, which are comparable to that of the commercial Pt/C (20 wt %). At an applied current density of 100 mA cm-2, stable hydrogen production was conducted for 120 h without obvious degradation. In alkaline media, Ru-Fe/Mo2C@NC can also deliver a current density of 100 mA cm-2 for more than 100 h. Furthermore, the Ru-Fe/Mo2C@NC electrocatalyst was used as cathode in an anion exchange membrane water electrolyzer under industrial environments for robust hydrogen production. The characterization and electrochemical results prove the synergism effects between Ru, Fe dopants and Mo2C for promoting hydrogen evolution activity. This work would pave a new avenue to fabricate low-cost, high-performance hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts for industrial water electrolyzers. Ru and Fe co-doped Mo2C electrocatalyst (Ru-Fe/Mo2C@NC) was synthesized via a controllable two-step method for efficient and persistent hydrogen evolution reaction in harsh electrolyte. The synergistic effect between Ru, Fe dopants and Mo2C resulted in a remarkably enhanced hydrogen evolution performance of the electrocatalyst in both acidic and alkaline electrolyte.+image

Abstract:For most Mo‐based electrocatalysts, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity depends on their own active structural defects or extrinsic transition metal centers. In this work, in order to combine the advantages of these two different active centers, a solid‐phase interface reaction (SPIR) strategy is proposed, which simultaneously introduces oxygen vacancies (VO) and metal centers (Ru) into the 2D Mo‐based catalyst. Briefly, this SPIR occurs at the interface between MoS2 and RuO2 nanoparticles of the RuO2/MoS2 precursor when overcoming the kinetic barriers at a suitable temperature under an Ar atmosphere. Since the adjacent parts of RuO2 and MoS2 are converted to Ru and MoO2 in situ, a composite system MiSC‐1 containing a large amount of active Ru and VO on MoO2 plane is obtained. Furthermore, theoretical calculations confirm the proposed mechanism of SPIR. MiSC‐1 shows excellent stability and catalytic performance in the HER, with an overpotential value of 12 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in 1.0 M KOH. Additionally, MiSC‐1 exhibits excellent performance in the hydrolysis of ammonia borane. This report will provide a versatile platform for the preparation of a multi‐component catalyst with high total activity as well as the identification of the structural details of the catalysts.

Abstract:Mo2N has been identified as a highly promising carrier for electrocatalysis. However, its complex synthesis method, use of toxic gases, and serious effects on supported noble metals catalyst during high-temperature sintering processes have seriously affected its hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity and stability. Here, we report an efficient strategy for synthesizing Mo2N using the high temperature shock (HTS) method in just 1.67 s, while also uniformly loading Ru onto Mo2N nanosheets. The HTS enables the homogeneous dispersion of the precious metal Ru, leading to an increased electrocatalytic activity, along with a strong charge transfer between Mo2N and Ru. Ru/Mo2N exhibited an overpotential of 66 mV at 10 mA/cm2 in 1 mol/L KOH. In the evaluation of catalytic activity, Ru/Mo2N demonstrates superiority over commercial Pt/C catalysts in terms of mass activity (1.71 A/mg at 200 mV) and turnover frequency (1.41 s−1 at 100 mV). This result provides a rational and effective pathway for the preparation of efficient electrocatalysts.
