Abstract:Control of the composition and morphology of Pd-based electrocatalysts is a promising strategy for the development of efficient direct formic acid fuel cells. Herein, a two-step method is presented for the design of B-doped PdCuAu nanospine assemblies (B-PdCuAu NAs) using NaBH4 as the boron dopant. The boron content can be tailored easily by tuning the reaction time, and an optimal boron content is beneficial to promote the formic acid oxidation reaction. Such B-PdCuAu NAs exhibit superior mass and specific activities to commercial Pd black and PdCuAu NAs in alkaline solution. The excellent catalytic performance of B-PdCuAu NAs may arise from the increase in surface active sites and the electronic effect of boron modification. This work provides a facile synthesis of the B-doped metallic catalysts and highlights the boron modification in improving their performance as anode electrocatalysts for fuel cells.

Abstract:Bimetallic AgPd nanoparticles were successfully immobilized on graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) functionalized SBA-15 for the first time by a facile co-reduction method. These catalysts were applied in the decomposition of formic acid. The dehydrogenation of formic acid is dependent on the composition of AgPd and the content of carbon nitride (CN). Among all of the AgPd/mCND/SBA-15 catalysts tested, the Ag10Pd90/0.2CND/SBA-15 catalyst exhibits highly superior performance for the decomposition of formic acid into high-quality hydrogen at 323 K with 100% hydrogen selectivity and a turnover frequency of 893 h(-1), which is among the maximum values obtained at 323 K in this paper. The improved performance is a promising step towards the utilization of formic acid as a hydrogen storage material.

Abstract:HCOOH (FA) is considered as a potential hydrogen-storage material. The chemically stored hydrogen in FA can be catalyti-cally released even at room temperature, which can be utilized by polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). However, in order to make FA a feasible hydrogen-storage medium, it is necessary to find catalysts with superior performance that enable it to produce hydrogen under moderate conditions. Herein, for the first time to our knowledge, we report amine-functionalized SBA-15 (SBA-15-Amine)-supported bimetallic AgPd nanoparticles with various molar ratios through a facile co-reduction method for serve as a catalyst for the dehydro-genation reaction of FA. As indicated by the turnover frequency (TOF), the performance of these catalysts depended on their composition. Among all the prepared AgPd/SBA-15-Amine catalysts, Ag1Pd9/SBA-15-Amine exhibited exceedingly high activity for the dehydrogenation of FA to yield high-quality H-2 at 323 K, with a maximum TOF of 964 h (-1) and 100% selectivity. It is revealed that the catalyst exhibits stable catalytic performance after multiple usage cycles. Therefore, the catalyst we developed can be a potential candidate for prompting the widespread utilization of FA as a hydrogen-storage material.

Abstract:Safe and efficient hydrogen storage is one of the key technologies for the widespread utilization of hydrogen energy. Formic acid (FA) is regarded as a safe and convenient chemical hydrogen storage material. However, the lack of highly efficient heterogeneous catalysts hinders its practical application. Herein, we presented a facile wet-impregnated deposition method to synthesize ultrafine AuPd alloy nanoparticles anchored on TiO2 nanosheets (AuPd/TiO2 nanosheets) which were used as high efficient catalysts for the dehydrogenation of FA. TiO2 nanosheets were calcined at different temperatures to modify the catalytic activity of catalyst. AuPd/TiO2 nanosheets-400 exhibits the superior activity for catalyzing the FA to release 96% of overall hydrogen content with an initial turnover frequency value of 592 mol H-2 mol(-1) metal h(-1) at 25 degrees C and low activation energy of 11.8 kJ mol(-1). Detailed characterizations show that the superior catalytic performance can be ascribed to the alloy structure of AuPd centers, the phase and crystallinity of TiO2 nanosheets, and the strong electron transfer interaction between AuPd nanoparticles and TiO2 nanosheets substrate.

Abstract:Formic acid (FA) has been considered as a promising hydrogen energy carrier due to its nontoxicity, high energy density, easy storage/transport, etc. However, the development of decent FA dehydrogenation catalysts with high selectivity, good catalytic activity, and excellent cycling performance remains a challenge. Herein, a highly stable heterogeneous catalyst using porous boron nitride nanofibers (BNNFs) as carriers has been developed for catalytic FA dehydrogenation. Taking the advantage of porous BNNFs with characteristics of high porosity and rich in surface defects and functional groups, amine groups are successfully introduced onto BNNFs (named BNNFs-A), which play an important role in synergistic catalysis reactions. Without using any additives, the prepared Au1Pd3/BNNFs-A catalytic FA dehydrogenation possesses superior catalytic activity with an initial turnover frequency (TOF) value of 1181.1 h–1 and an activation energy of 20.1 kJ mol–1. Comparative investigations and theoretical studies indicate that the excellent performance of Au1Pd3/BNNFs-A derives from the small particle sizes and high dispersion of Au1Pd3 nanoparticles on BNNFs, the modified Pd electronic structure in the Au1Pd3/BNNFs-A composite, and the synergistic effect of the modified BN surfaces. Abstract:Ultrafine and well-dispersed PdAu bimetallic nanoparticles (ca. 1.4 nm) are successfully immobilized on amine-containing UiO-66 frameworks (NH2-UiO-66) via a double-solvent impregnation method. By virtue of the double-solvent strategy, the incorporated PdAu nanoparticles (NPs) are mainly present in the alloy state and distributed inside the cavities of NH2-UiO-66 near the window of the cages. The resulting PdAu/UiO-66 catalysts exhibit much higher catalytic activity and stability for the dehydrogenation of formic acid than the catalyst prepared by the conventional single-solvent impregnation method. The composition-optimized Pd0.8Au0.2/UiO-66-D catalyst affords a very high turnover frequency value of 722 h–1 at 298 K, which is among the highest one in the metal–organic framework-supported Pd-based NP catalysts ever reported under similar reaction conditions. Abstract:Formic acid (FA, HCOOH), a convenient and safe hydrogen storage material, has the great potential for fuel cell applications. However, hydrogen generation of FA is inefficient in the presence of heterogeneous catalysts at relatively low temperatures, which remains a big challenge. Herein, La2O3-modified highly dispersed AuPd alloy nanoparticles (AuPd La2O3) with small particle size have been successfully anchored on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) by a facile co-reduction route. Moreover, the catalyst exhibits excellent catalytic activity and 100% hydrogen selectivity for hydrogen generation in the formic acid/sodium formate (FA/SF) system with the initial turnover frequency (TOF) value of 589 mol H-2 mol(-1) catalyst h(-1) at 50 degrees C and 280 mol H-2 mol(-1) catalyst h-1 even at room temperature (25 degrees C). The present Au0.3Pd0.7-(La2O3)(0.6)/CNTs with superior catalysis on FA dehydrogenation without any CO generation at room temperature can not only pave the way for practical application of hydrogen storage system, but also can be extended to other catalysis system. Abstract:Dehydrogenation of formic acid (FA) represents a promising route for clean hydrogen production, the economic viability of which, however, is largely hindered by the catalyst inefficiency. Here, ultrafine Au–Pd bimetallic nanoclusters (NCs) confined within the cavities of bipyridyl covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) are constructed via a metal-nitrogen coordination reduction strategy, which is enabled by the chelation between bidentate nitrogen sites of the bipyridine ligands and metal ion precursors. The resulting CTF-confined PdAu NCs exhibit a high initial turnover frequency up to 12,368 h–1 (333 K) toward the dehydrogenation of FA without any additives. The experimental and theoretical studies disclose that the pyridinic nitrogen sites of CTF not only facilitate the formation of monodisperse small-sized metal NCs via the anchoring and the pore confinement effect but also serve as a proton buffer which can store excess protons and thus suppress the recombination of adsorbed formate and hydrogen on the PdAu alloy surface. These findings would have significant implications for designing high-performance hydrogen production catalysts.

Abstract:Bimetallic Au-Pd nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully immobilized in the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) MIL-101 and ethylenediamine (ED)-grafted MIL-101 (ED-MIL-101) using a simple liquid impregnation method. The resulting composites, Au-Pd/MIL-101 and Au-Pd/ED-MIL-101, represent the first highly active MOF-immobilized metal catalysts for the complete conversion of formic acid to high-quality hydrogen at a convenient temperature for chemical hydrogen storage. Au-Pd NPs with strong bimetallic synergistic effects have a much higher catalytic activity and a higher tolerance with respect to CO poisoning than monometallic Au and Pd counterparts.

Abstract:Formic acid (FA) dehydrogenation is a potential technology for sustainable hydrogen production, while the tardy nature of FA dehydrogenation inhibits its development. To optimize the catalytic activity of hydrogen generation from formic acid dehydrogenation, citric acid-modified boron nitride with abundant −NH2 (CA–BN-NH2) is employed as a support to control the particle distribution, particle size, and electronic structure of AuPd nanoparticles. The obtained Au0.3Pd0.7/CA–BN-NH2 exhibits extraordinary catalytic activity for hydrogen production from FA dehydrogenation, possessing 100% hydrogen selectivity and an unprecedented initial turnover frequency (TOF) of 7046 mol H2 mol catalyst–1 h–1 without any additive, outperforming most of the reported noble metal catalysts under similar conditions. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that the extraordinary catalytic activities are mainly due to the geometric effect and electronic effect of AuPd nanoparticles derived from the modification of h-BN with citric acid and the accompanying −NH2. This work provides more flexibility for designing highly efficient nanocatalysts for hydrogen generation from FA dehydrogenation.

Abstract:The controllable preparation of noble metallic nanocrystals with a 3D architecture is of great interest for electrocatalysis applications due to their enhanced atomic utilization, facilitated mass transport, and other attractive properties. In this work, a facile, one-pot, and surfactant-free method of synthesizing heterophase sponge-like Pd (S-Pd) is developed. The prepared S-Pd has a four-fold higher peak current density and better durability than a commercial Pd/C catalyst for formic acid oxidation. It therefore has great potential as an anode catalyst for direct formic acid fuel cells.

Abstract:The role of mass transport for bubble generation reaction as formic acid (FA) dehydrogenation has been over-looked for a long time that the turnover frequency (TOF) values of the majority of the catalysts are limited to less than 1000 h(-1). Here, we proposed a design principle of efficient catalyst for this type of reaction that the synergism of highly active catalytic components and developed porous structure of the support required for effective mass transport is indispensable. Based on this cognition, well-dispersed and ultrasmall PdAu alloy nanoparticles (similar to 2 nm) supported in amine-functionalized hierarchically porous carbon (HPC-NH2) have been prepared via an impregnation-reduction method. Notably, owing to the electronic effect of the PdAu alloy clusters and the introduced basic amine sites, as well as the hierarchically porous structure of the support, the optimal Pd60Au40/HPC-NH2 catalyst exhibits a TOF value up to 3763 h(-1) at room temperature and 29,210 h-(1) at 323 K.

Abstract:Formic acid (FA) holds significant potential as a liquid hydrogen storage medium. However, it is important to improve the reaction rates and extend the practical applications of FA dehydrogenation and Cr(VI) reduction through the development of efficient heterogeneous catalysts. This study reports the synthesis of a uniformly dispersed PdAuIr nanoparticles (NPs) catalyst loaded with amine groups covalent organic frameworks (COFs). The alloyed NPs demonstrated exceptional effectiveness in FA dehydrogenation rate and Cr(VI) reduction. The initial turnover of frequency (TOF) value for FA dehydrogenation without additives was 9970 h −1 at 298 K, the apparent activation energy ( E a ) was 30.3 kJ/mol and the rate constant ( k ) for Cr(VI) reduction was 0.742 min −1 . Additionally, it showcased the ability to undergo recycling up to six times with minimal degradation in performance. The results indicate that its remarkable catalytic performance can be attributed primarily to the favorable mass transfer attributes of the aminated COFs supports, the strong metal-support interaction (SMSI), and the synergistic effects among the metals. This study offers a novel perspective on the advancement of efficient and durable heterogeneous catalysts with diverse capabilities, thereby making significant contributions to the fields of energy and environmental preservation.

Abstract:Abstract Formic acid (FA) has been recently regarded as a safe and stable source of hydrogen (H 2 ). Selective and efficient dehydrogenation of FA by an effective catalyst under mild conditions is still a challenge. So, different molar ratios of bimetallic Pd–Au alloy nanoparticles were effectively stabilized and uniformly distributed on boron nitride nanosheets (BNSSs) surface via the precipitation process. Obtained catalysts were employed in FA decomposition for H 2 production. Pd–Au@BNNS containing 3% Au and 5% Pd (Au .03 Pd .05 @BNNS) exhibited high activity and 100% H 2 selectivity for H 2 production from FA at 50 °C. In order to optimize the reaction conditions, various factors including, time, temperature, solvent, base type, and amount of catalyst, were examined.

In this work, an electrochemical self-catalyzed method was employed to deposit Au single-atoms onto Pd nanocrystals with tuneable compositions. Spherical-corrected Scanning transmission microscope and electrochemical characteristics demonstrated that the Au atoms were atomic-dispersive on Pd nanocrystals, forming Au-Pd single-atom alloy. Systematic studies showed that the activity of Pdx @Auy/C SAA is related to the density of the Au single-atoms on Pd surface. When an optimized balance between active-site exposure and intrinsic activity is achieved, the Pd50 @Au1/C SAA showed superb formic acid electrooxidation activity of 4.98 A mg−1 M and unusual high anti-poisoning ability which is distinctly different from most of the Pd based catalysts. The boosted electrochemical performances of Pdx @Auy/C SAA can be attributed to the unique geometric effect that facilitates the direct reaction route and favourable electronic effect that weakens the CO adsorption to Pd sites.

Abstract:The safe and efficient storage and release of hydrogen are widely recognized as the main challenges for the establishment of a fuel‐cell‐based hydrogen economy. Formic acid (FA) has great potential as a safe and convenient source of hydrogen for fuel cells. Despite tremendous efforts, the development of heterogeneous catalysts with high activity and relatively low cost remains a major challenge. The synthesis of AuPd–MnOx nanocomposite immobilized on ZIF‐8–reduced‐graphene‐oxide (ZIF‐8–rGO) bi‐support by a wet‐chemical method is reported here. Interestingly, the resultant AuPd–MnOx/ZIF‐8–rGO shows excellent catalytic activity for the generation of hydrogen from FA, and the initial turnover frequency (TOF) reaches a highest value of 382.1 mol H2 mol catalyst−1 h−1 without any additive at 298 K. This good performance of AuPd–MnOx/ZIF‐8–rGO results from the modified electronic structure of Pd in the AuPd–MnOx/ZIF‐8–rGO composite, the small size and high dispersion of the AuPd–MnOx nanocomposite, and also the strong metal‐support interaction between the AuPd–MnOx and ZIF‐8–rGO bi‐support.
