Abstract:With the increasing stringency of environmental protection regulations, reducing the severe pollution caused by soot particles from diesel vehicle exhaust has become a widespread concern. Catalytic purification technology is currently an efficient method for eliminating soot particles, which needs to develop high-activity catalysts. This work uses a two-step hydrothermal method to synthesize MnOx/CeO2 nanosphere catalysts, which have synergistic effects between manganese and cerium, and have high reactive oxygen species. Among them, the MnCe-1:4 catalyst represents the optimal catalytic activity, and the values of T10, T50, and T90 are 289, 340, and 373 °C, respectively. On account of their simple synthetic procedure and low cost, the prepared MnOx/CeO2 nanosphere catalysts have good prospects for practical applications.

Abstract:To solve the soot elimination and optimize catalyst diesel particulate filter (CDPF) regeneration strategies, a series of Mn-Ce catalysts with different Mn/(Mn+Ce) molar ratios are successfully synthetized by hydrothermal method and the complete catalytic oxidation of diesel engine soot are investigated. Compare to CeO2 and MnO2, the catalytic promotion on soot combustion of Mn-Ce catalysts is more excellent by thermogravimetric experiments due to their better ability to activate oxygen species, which is consistent with results in characterization analysis. Among as-prepared catalysts, MC-0.40 has the best catalytic activity with the lowest starting temperature (Ts ), peak temperature (Tp ) and largest comprehensive combustion index (S) both in O2/N2 and NO/O2/N2 atmosphere. Influence factors on catalytic performance are studied. Weight ratios of soot/MC-0.40 catalyst are suitable at the range of 1:9–1:13, which makes soot combustion more easily. Ashes in the reaction process show adverse effects due to their ability to increase ignition point by inhibit heat and oxygen transfer. Mn-Ce catalysts are more sensitive and show better catalytic activity in NO atmosphere because of generations of abundant adsorbed species and NO adsorption/desorption. The three consecutive cycles of MC-0.40 catalyst are performed to study the catalytic stability, and thermogravimetric curves show that the potential reusability of MC-0.40 catalyst can be relatively accepted in soot combustion.

A Comparative Study on Ce–Pr and Ce–Mn Mixed Oxide Catalysts Toward Soot Catalytic Combustion

Abstract:CePr and CeMn mixed oxide catalysts were synthesized by inserting Pr and Mn atoms into CeO2. Catalytic performance on soot combustion was investigated, and several characterizations were carried out using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analysis, H-2 temperature-programmed reduction, and X-ray diffraction. Results show that a cubic fluorite structure solid solution can be formed with Pr and Mn doped into CeO2 lattice. Three oxygen species, namely, lattice oxygen O-I (O2-), defect oxygen species O-II (O-2(-), O-2(2-), and O-), and hydroxyl-like groups and adsorbed molecular water O-III, exist in the solid solution structure. In general, the defect oxygen species O-II is responsible for soot combustion. CePr exhibits fast oxidation rate because of the presence of open oxygen migration channel (O-I <-> O-II <-> O-III), and reactive oxygen species O-II can continue to be replenished. CeMn possesses a large amount of surface active oxygen, which results in excellent low-temperature catalytic activity.
The Highly Active Catalysts of Nanometric CeO2-supported Cobalt Oxides for Soot Combustion

Abstract:Nanometric CeO2-supported cobalt oxide materials with variable Co/Ce atomic ratios were prepared by the method of ultrasonic-assisted incipient-wetness impregnation. The catalytic behaviors of a series of CoOx/nmCeO2 catalysts have been studied for soot combustion. XRD, XPS, Raman, UV–vis DRS and FT-IR spectroscopy characterization results indicated that CoO or cobalt–cerium solid solutions were formed in the samples with the low Co loading amount, while Co3O4 was formed in the samples with high Co loading amount. CoOx/nmCeO2 catalysts can further promote soot combustion in contrast to nanometric CeO2. This improvement is related to the increase in the redox properties of the catalysts brought about by loading cobalt oxide on nanometric CeO2. The TPR experiment results under hydrogen atmosphere indicated that the presence of Co decreases the reduction temperature of catalyst from 555°C (nanometric CeO2) to 286°C (Co20/nmCeO2). On the other hand, attributing to nanoparticle effect and NO2 formation, Com/nmCeO2 oxide catalysts prepared in this study have very high activity for soot combustion. The best catalytic activity was obtained over Co20/nmCeO2 catalyst that T10, T50, T90 were 286°C, 368°C, 418°C, respectively, and SCO2m was 98.8%. Compared with the blank case (i.e., without catalyst) for soot combustion, T50 decreased by more than 200°C and SCO2m increased by 40% point. And this catalytic activity for the combustion of soot particle is as good as supported Pt catalysts, which is the best catalyst system so far reported for soot combustion under loose contact conditions. This temperature of soot combustion can ensure immediate activation of the catalyst on the filter under the conditions of diesel engine emissions.
Synergistic Effects of Multicomponents Produce Outstanding Soot Oxidation Activity in a Cs/Co/MnO x Catalyst

Abstract:The control of soot emission from diesel vehicles is of extraordinary importance to the environment, and catalytic removal of soot is a highly effective and clean method. Here, we report a novel, non-noble metal catalyst for application in the catalytic combustion of soot with superb activity and resistance to H2O and SO2. MnOx oxide was prepared via a hydrothermal method, and then, Cs and Co were loaded on MnOx by impregnation. The 5%Cs/1%Co/MnOx catalyst displayed excellent catalytic activity with values of T10 (332 °C), T50 (371 °C), and T90 (415 °C) under loose contact. The as-prepared catalysts were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), H2 temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), O2 temperature-programmed desorption (TPD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS). The results suggest that, after the introduction of Cs and Co into the MnOx oxide, more NO2 molecules take part in soot oxidation, exhibiting higher NO2 utilization efficiency; this is due to the synergistic effects of multiple components (Cs, Co, and Mn) promoting the generation of more surface-active oxygen and then accelerating the reaction between NO2 and soot. Abstract:A diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) is installed upstream of an exhaust after-treatment line to remove CO and hydrocarbons and generate NO2. The catalyst should possess both good oxidation ability and thermal stability because it sits after the engine. We present a novel high-performance DOC with high steam resistance and thermal stability. A selective dissolution method is adopted to modify the surface physicochemical environment of CeO2-SmMn2O5. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, Raman, electron paramagnetic resonance, hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction, and temperature-programmed desorption results reveal that surface Sm cations are partially removed with the exposure of more Mn4+ and Ce3+ cations and the presence of active surface oxygen species. This mechanism benefits the oxygen transformation from Ce to Mn and promotes the Ce3+ + Mn4+ ↔ Ce4+ + Mn3+ redox cycle according to the in situ near-ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transformation spectroscopy results. Under laboratory-simulated diesel combustion conditions, the catalyst demonstrates excellent low-temperature oxidation catalytic activity (CO and C3H6 conversion: T100 = 250 °C) compared to a Pt-based catalyst (CO and C3H6 conversion: T100 = 310 °C) with a WHSV of 120,000 mL g-1 h-1. Specifically, NO conversion reaches 68% when the temperature is approximately 300 °C.

Abstract:Removal of soot particles by highly efficient catalysts is a research hotspot, not only because the problem of air pollution, but also because the complexity of the catalytic process that involves gas-solid-solid three-phase reaction. We synthesized single atom Ce and CeO2 nanoparticles simultaneously modified layered Na2Mn3O7 catalysts for soot combustion with unprecedented catalytic performance and high resistance to water and sulfur, using low-cost raw materials and a simple preparation protocol. The synergy between the easily available adsorbed and surface reactive oxygen species and the high yield of NO2 exploitation, leads to the beneficial transition of soot combustion process from “gas-solid-solid” into “gas-gas-solid”, thereby, shifted to low temperatures. Our findings provide a pathway to the development of cheap catalysts based on transition metal oxides, avoiding application of noble metals for successful elimination of diesel exhausts at remarkably low temperatures.

Abstract:The performance of catalysts used in after-treatment systems is the key factor for the removal of diesel soot, which is an important component of atmospheric fine particle emissions. Herein, three-dimensionally ordered macroporous-mesoporous TixSi1-xO2 (3DOM-m TixSi1-xO2) and its supported MnOx catalysts doped with different alkali/alkaline-earth metals (AMnOx/3DOM-m Ti0.7Si0.3O2 (A: Li, Na, K, Ru, Cs, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba)) were prepared by mesoporous template (P123)-assisted colloidal crystal template (CCT) and incipient wetness impregnation methods, respectively. Physicochemical characterizations of the catalysts were performed using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption-desorption, H2 temperature-programmed reduction, O2 temperature-programmed desorption, NO temperature-programmed oxidation, and Raman spectroscopy techniques; then, we evaluated their catalytic performances for the removal of diesel soot particles. The results show that the 3DOM-m Ti0.7Si0.3O2 supports exhibited a well-defined 3DOM-m nanostructure, and AMnOx nanoparticles with 10-50 nm were evenly dispersed on the inner walls of the uniform macropores. In addition, the as-prepared catalysts exhibited good catalytic performance for soot combustion. Among the prepared catalysts, CsMnOx/3DOM-m Ti0.7Si0.3O2 had the highest catalytic activity for soot combustion, with T10, T50, and T90 (the temperatures corresponding to soot conversion rates of 10%, 50%, and 90%) values of 285, 355, and 393°C, respectively. The high catalytic activity of the CsMnOx/3DOM-m Ti0.7Si0.3O2 catalysts was attributed to their excellent low-temperature reducibility and homogeneous macroporous-mesoporous structure, as well as to the synergistic effects between Cs and Mn species and between CsMnOx and the Ti0.7Si0.3O2 support.

Abstract:Catalytic diesel particulate filter is an efficient equipment for particulate matters control downstream of a diesel engine. MnO x –CeO 2 mixed oxides are a potential alternative of the high cost commercial platinum catalyst. However, the poor thermal stability and sulfur resistance are two issues challenging its application. Additionally, the mechanism of synergistic effect between manganese oxide and ceria still remained debatable. Here, the catalysis mechanisms in the presence/absence of NO x were reviewed. The origins of synergistic effects were discussed based on whether the solid solutions formed or not. Meanwhile, different kinds of metal modifications were summarized and their promotion influences on the thermal stability and sulfur resistance were clarified in detail. Graphical Abstract
Effects of Adsorbed and Gaseous NOx Species on Catalytic Oxidation of Diesel Soot with MnOx–CeO2 Mixed Oxides

Abstract:MnOx–CeO2, MnOx and CeO2 catalysts were synthesized by the sol–gel method. The structural, redox and adsorption properties of the individual and mixed oxides were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), CO temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), NO temperature-programmed oxidation (TPO), NOx temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The TPO tests were performed with the soot–catalyst mixture under loose contact conditions to evaluate the catalytic activity of the oxide catalysts for soot oxidation. The MnOx–CeO2 mixed oxide catalyst presents the lowest soot oxidation temperature among the catalysts investigated in the presence of NO and O2. The synergetic effect between manganese oxide and ceria restrains the growth of oxide crystallites, increases the specific surface area and improves the low-temperature redox property. Especially, the activity of MnOx–CeO2 mixed oxides for NO oxidation and its capacity for NO2 storage in the form of surface nitrates are greatly enhanced. Not only the NO2 released from decomposition of surface nitrates but also that formed by catalytic oxidation of gaseous or adsorbed NO on the catalyst is confirmed important for soot oxidation. It is found by the in situ DRIFTS tests with the soot–catalyst mixture that the generation of surface oxygen complexes (SOCs), such as carboxylic anhydrides, lactones, quinine, ceto-enol groups, ethers and phenols, occurs at about 100°C lower temperature with exposure to NO than in the absence of NO, which is an important step for soot oxidation.

Abstract:CeO2–K catalysts supported on porous alumina substrate have been prepared by using a novel water-immiscible solvent. The advantage of this method is to load the catalyst onto the filter surface by one-time coating and prevent depositing the catalyst into the porous structure of support materials. The catalytic activities of the supported catalysts were evaluated by TPR system and the results showed that the pure CeO2 displayed a poor catalytic activity for soot oxidation, while the addition of K element into CeO2 would result in the formation of CeO2–K solid solution and significant enhancement of catalytic activity. Nevertheless, the variation of K content had a limited effect on soot ignition temperature. The catalyst with a Ce:K molar ratio of 1:2 exhibited an ignition temperature of about 330°C and the oxidation rates of about 0.16 and 0.28mgmin−1cm−2 at temperatures of 370 and 390°C, respectively.
Facile preparation of alkali metal‐modified hollow nanotubular manganese‐based oxide catalysts and their excellent catalytic soot combustion performance

Abstract:Abstract The soot emitted during the operation of diesel engine exhaust seriously threatens the human health and environment, so treating diesel engine exhaust is critical. At present, the most effective method for eliminating soot particles is post‐treatment technology. Preparation of economically viable and highly active soot combustion catalysts is a pivotal element of post‐treatment technology. In this study, different single‐metal oxide catalysts with fibrous structures and alkali metal‐modified hollow nanotubular Mn‐based oxide catalysts were synthesized using centrifugal spinning method. Activity evaluation results showed that the manganese oxide catalyst has the best catalytic activity among the prepared single‐metal oxide catalysts. Further research on alkali metal modification showed that doping alkali metals is beneficial for improving the oxidation state of manganese and generating a large number of reactive oxygen species. Combined with the structural effect brought by the hollow nanotube structure, the alkali metal‐modified Mn‐based oxide catalysts exhibit superior catalytic performance. Among them, the Cs‐modified Mn‐based oxide catalyst exhibits the best catalytic performance because of its rich active oxygen species, excellent NO oxidation ability, abundant Mn 4+ ions (Mn 4+ /Mn n+ = 64.78%), and good redox ability. The T 10 , T 50 , T 90 , and CO 2 selectivity of the Cs‐modified Mn‐based oxide catalyst were 267°C, 324°C, 360°C, and 97.8%, respectively.

Abstract:A series of highly active amorphous manganese oxide catalysts for soot combustion were synthesized using colloidal solution combustion synthesis (CSCS) method. The surface morphological and structural properties were systematically tested via various techniques: X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption-desorption, temperature-programmed reduction, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Manganese precursors and calcination temperatures affect the crystal structure, redox properties, and surface properties of MnOx. With the calcination temperature increasing from 550 to 850 °C, the crystalline structure of manganese oxides changed from amorphous phase to crystal phase. In general, the amorphous MnOx with a hierarchical porous structure showed better catalytic activity for soot oxidation than the crystal ones (T10 as indicator), which can be ascribed to the improved low-temperature reducibility, more surface active oxygen species, and abundant surface Mn4+ ions. The presence of NO in O2 also promoted soot oxidation which follows the NO2-assisted mechanism. Our work may provide a rational comparison between high-efficient amorphous and crystal MnOx catalysts for soot oxidation.

Abstract:The development of noble-metal-free heterogeneous catalysts that can realize the aerobic oxidation of C–H bonds at low temperature is a profound challenge in the catalysis community. Here we report the synthesis of a mesoporous Mn 0.5 Ce 0.5 O x solid solution that is highly active for the selective oxidation of hydrocarbons under mild conditions (100–120 °C). Notably, the catalytic performance achieved in the oxidation of cyclohexane to cyclohexanone/cyclohexanol (100 °C, conversion: 17.7%) is superior to those by the state-of-art commercial catalysts (140–160 °C, conversion: 3-5%). The high activity can be attributed to the formation of a Mn 0.5 Ce 0.5 O x solid solution with an ultrahigh manganese doping concentration in the CeO 2 cubic fluorite lattice, leading to maximum active surface oxygens for the activation of C–H bonds and highly reducible Mn 4+ ions for the rapid migration of oxygen vacancies from the bulk to the surface.

Abstract:Particulate matter, represented by soot particles, poses a significant global environmental threat, necessitating efficient control technology. Here, we innovatively designed and elaborately fabricated ordered hierarchical macroporous catalysts of Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 (OM CZO) integrated on a catalyzed diesel particulate filter (CDPF) using the self-assembly method. An oxygen-vacancy-enriched ordered macroporous Ce0.8Zr0.2O2 catalyst (VO-OM CZO) integrated CDPF was synthesized by subsequent NaBH4 reduction. The VO-OM CZO integrated CDPF exhibited a markedly enhanced soot oxidation activity compared to OM CZO and powder CZO coated CDPFs (T50: 430 vs 490 and 545 °C, respectively). The well-defined OM structure of the VO-OM CZO catalysts effectively improves the contact efficiency between soot and the catalysts. Meanwhile, oxygen vacancies trigger the formation of a large amount of highly reactive peroxide species (O22-) from molecular oxygen (O2) through electron abstraction from the three adjacent Ce3+ (3Ce3+ + Vö + O2 → 3Ce4+ + O22-), contributing to the efficient soot oxidation. This work demonstrates the fabrication of the ordered macroporous CZO integrated CDPF and reveals the importance of structure and surface engineering in soot oxidation, which sheds light on the design of highly efficient PM capture and removal devices.

Abstract:Diesel engine exhaust comprises nitrogen oxides (NO x ) and soot particles, which cause serious air pollution. However, owing to the contradictory nature of NO x reduction and soot oxidation, a trade-off exists in the simultaneous removal of NO x and soot. Consequently, catalytic technology has become a hot research topic. This study prepared MO δ /Fe-Beta (M=Fe, Co, Ni, Mn, Cu) catalysts through incipient wetness impregnation using Fe-Beta as the support and explored the catalytic performance of the above catalysts. The results exhibited the good performance of the prepared catalysts. The introduction of Mn resulted in a lower peak temperature of soot combustion for the catalyst, and slightly decreased deNO x performance of Fe-Beta. The soot combustion temperature was as low as 422 °C, and the temperature window for 80% NO conversion was 164–423 °C. The interaction between MnO δ and zeolite can regulate the acid sites and produce sufficient active oxygen species for the catalyst. The catalytic activity of the MnO δ /Fe-Beta catalyst is due to its strong redox property, appropriate number of acid sites and sufficient number of active oxygen species. In addition, the catalyst had good stability and water and sulfur resistance, therefore it had great potential for future application in simultaneous removal of NO x and soot from diesel engine exhaust. Abstract:Herein, we synthesized the well-defined catalysts of Mn-decorated single-crystal CeO 2 nanorod (Mn/CeO 2 ) with dominantly exposed {1 1 0} facets by incipient wetness impregnation method. Surface-modified Mn atoms can diffuse into the crystal lattice of CeO 2 -{1 1 0} facet to form Mn-O-Ce bond chains. The heteroatomic interfacial oxygen atoms in Mn-O-Ce bond chains as active oxygen species have a high-efficient performance, and resulting oxygen vacancy (O v ) sites can promote the adsorption and activation properties for O 2 . Mn/CeO 2 -10 catalyst exhibits superior catalytic activities and high stability. The related characterizations and DFT calculations results reveal that the Mn 2+ -O v -Ce 3+ active sites can decrease activation energy of O 2 and desorption energy of NO 2 in processes of NO oxidation to NO 2 , which is the crucial steps of NO 2 -assisted mechanism for soot oxidation. This work provides a new inspiration for rational modification of the near-surface atomic structure to obtain efficient catalysts for removal of soot or other pollutions.
