Abstract:Ag1_xKxNbO3(AKNx (x <= 0.12) ceramics were prepared to understand the relationship of structure-properties driven by compositions and temperatures. The results suggested that this binary system possessed a morpho-tropic phase boundary (MPB) consisted of ferrielectric and ferroelectric phases with iso-symmetry at room temperature, in which domains switching together with electric-field-induced irreversible phase transition achieved a much higher electrostrain (Smax= 0.4%) than other compositions. But this MPB was destroyed after poling, leading to inferior piezoelectricity. A phase diagram was drawn after analyzing in situ XRD and dielectric data, where an almost vertical ferrielectric/antiferroelectric <-> polymorphic ferroelectric MPB line starting from a triple point was proposed. As temperature increased, the piezoelectricity significant enhanced near ferroelectric orthorhombic <-> monoclinic phase boundary, while the highest piezoelectricity was achieved near the mono-clinic <-> paraelectric phase boundary with d33 = 200 pC/N. The enhanced piezoelectricity is intimately related to the ferroelectric monoclinic possessing Pm symmetry.

Abstract:Polymorphic phase transition boundary (PPB) strategy is effective in designing high-performance piezoelectric materials in (K0.5Na0.5)NbO3 (KNN)-based systems. However, the underlying mechanism of large piezoelectric response in KNN-based is still blurry and thus needs to be explored properly. In this paper, it is found that the domain reorientation becomes easier and more sufficient in the KNN-based ceramics with two-phase coexistence. Moreover, in situ transmission electron microscope experiments disclose the occurrence of a new intermediate phase under an external electric filed, which could relieve the internal stress generated by the domain reorientation and then facilitate the further domain switching along the electric field direction. The enhanced domain reorientation contributes to the high piezoelectric response in PPB region (d33 = 438 pC/N, kp = 48%, d*33 = 520 p.m./V at 1.5 kV/mm). Our work provides an in-depth understanding of the contribution of the domain switching and electric-filed-induced phase transition to piezoelectric properties in KNN-based ceramics, which shall benefit the design of new lead-free high-performance piezoelectric materials.

Abstract:Recent research progress in (K,Na)NbO3 (KNN)-based lead-free piezoelectric ceramics has attracted increasing attention for their applications to microsystems or microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) in the form of thin films. This work demonstrates that high-quality KNN-based epitaxial films can be synthesized by a conventional sol-gel method, whose phase structure and domain characteristics have been investigated with emphasis on the temperature effect. A monoclinic MC structure is observed at room temperature in KNN-based epitaxial films, which is close to but different from the orthorhombic phase in bulk counterparts. Piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) at elevated temperatures reveals continuous changes of ferroelectric domains in KNN films during heating and cooling cycles between room temperature and 190 °C. A distinct change in domain morphology is observed upon heating to 110 °C, accompanied by a clear variation of dielectric permittivity suggesting a thermotropic phase transition, which is revealed to belong to a MC-MA phase transition on the basis of structural and PFM analysis on local ferroelectric and piezoelectric behaviors. Enhanced piezoelectric response at the thermotropic phase boundary is observed, which is attributed to active domains and/or nanodomains formed across the boundary. Domain engineering by utilizing the phase transition should be important and effective in KNN-based films not only for property enhancement but also for its textured ceramics.

Abstract:Lead-free K0.5Na0.5NbO3 (KNN) nanotube arrays were synthesized by a sol-gel method with anodic aluminum oxide templates. The obtained KNN nanotubes exhibited a polycrystalline and monoclinic perovskite structure with diameters of ∼200 nm and wall thickness of ∼30–40 nm, respectively. The polarization-electric loop curve of the nanotubes array were examined showing the values of 2Pr and 2Ec at about 3.4 μC/cm2 and 13 kV/cm, respectively, under a maximum electric field of 12.5 kV/cm. The piezoelectric characteristics of individual KNN nanotube array was also identified through piezoresponse force microscopy.

Abstract:Lead-free (K0.5Na0.5)NbO3-based (KNN) piezoceramics featuring a polymorphic phase boundary (PPB) between the orthorhombic and tetragonal phases at room temperature are reported to possess high piezoelectric properties but with inferior cycling stability, while the ceramics with a single tetragonal phase show improved cycling stability but with lower piezoelectric coefficients. In this work, electric biasing in-situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) study is conducted on two KNN-based compositions, which are respectively at and off PPB. Our observations reveal the distinctive domain responses in these two ceramics under cyclic fields. The higher domain wall density in the poled KNN at PPB contributes to the high piezoelectric properties. Upon cycling, however, a new microstructure feature, "domain intersection", is directly observed in this PPB composition. In comparison, the off-PPB KNN ceramic develops large domains during poling, which experience much less extent of disruption during cycling. Our comparative study provides the basis for understanding the relation between phase composition and piezoelectric performance.

Abstract:To characterize the inhomogeneous field distributions and their effect on ferroelectric/ferroelastic domain switching in potassium sodium niobate-based piezoceramics, a partially electroded orthorhombic phase K0.5Na0.5NbO3 ceramic sample containing a distinct edge was investigated using micro-beam, high-energy XRD with applied fields. Under the field application, the partial-electrode sample exhibits orientation-dependent and position-sensitive domain switching. The experimental measurements of micro-scale domain texture correlate reasonably with simulated electric fields calculated from a finite element analysis. Both experimental and simulated results reveal that the domain switching is induced inhomogeneously up to the millimeter-scale across the sample and that the electric field is significantly concentrated near the electrode edge. Integrating the experimental results with the model demonstrates that the local electric field directions and amplitudes drive the local orientation dependence of domain switching and, conversely, the direction of the local electric field can be inferred from the direction in which the maximum domain switching is measured.

Abstract:The lead-free piezoelectric 0.915K0.5Na0.5NbO3-0.075BaZrO3-0.01Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3 (0.915KNN-0.075BZ-0.01BNT) films were prepared by a chemical solution deposition method. The films possess a pure rhomobohedral perovskite phase and a dense surface without crack. The temperature-dependent dielectric properties of the specimens manifest that only phase transition from ferroelectric to paraelectric phase occurred and the Curie temperature is 217 oC. The temperature stability of ferroelectric phase was also supported by the stable piezoelectric properties of the films. These results suggest that the slope of the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) for the solid solution formed with the KNN and BZ in the films should be vertical. The voltage-induced polarization switching, and a distinct piezo-response suggested that the 0.915 KNN-0.075BZ-0.01BNT films show good piezoelectric properties.

Abstract:(K, Na)NbO3 (KNN) is a promising lead-free compound that is more suitable for piezoelectric applications requiring environmental or even biological compatibility than the traditional lead-based Pb(Zr, Ti)O-3 systems. In this work, we synthesized single crystalline KNN nanorods (NRs) with various K/Na ratios, which were used as ideal specimens for investigating the compositional dependence of piezoelectricity. Piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) was utilized to characterize the three-dimensional (3-D) morphology and piezoelectric properties of single crystalline KNN NRs. A phase boundary was confirmed around a K/Na ratio of similar to 45/55 based on local switching behavior, whereby enhanced piezoresponse in KNN single crystals was obtained with specific domain structures. The methodology demonstrated in this work can also be applied for further fundamental studies on KNN as well as other lead-free piezoelectric materials.
Inverted Electro-Mechanical Behaviour Induced by the Irreversible Domain Configuration Transformation in (K,na)nbo3-Based Ceramics

Abstract:Miniaturization of domains to the nanometer scale has been previously reported in many piezoelectrics with two-phase coexistence. Despite the observation of nanoscale domain configuration near the polymorphic phase transition (PPT) regionin virgin (K-0.5,Na-0.5)NbO3 (KNN) based ceramics, it remains unclear how this domain state responds to external loads and influences the macroscopic electromechanical properties. To this end, the electric -field -induced and stress -induced strain curves of KNNbased ceramics over a wide compositional range across PPT were characterized. It was found that the coercive field of the virgin samples was highest in PPT region, which was related to the inhibited domain wall motion due to the presence of nanodomains. However, the coercive field was found to be the lowest in the PPT region after electrical poling. This was related to the irreversible transformation of the nanodomains into micron -sized domains during the poling process. With the similar micron -sized domain configuration for all poled ceramics, the domains in the PPT region move more easily due to the additional polarization vectors. The results demonstrate that the poling process can give rise to the irreversible domain configuration transformation and then account for the inverted macroscopic piezoelectricity in the PPT region of KNN-based ceramics.

Abstract:Lead-based piezoelectric materials are currently facing global restrictions due to their lead toxicity. Thus it is urgent to develop lead-free substitutes with high piezoelectricity and temperature stability, among which, potassium-sodium niobate [(K, Na) NbO3, KNN] has the most potential. It is very difficult to simultaneously achieve high piezoelectric performance and reliable stability in KNN-based systems. In particular, the structural/physical origin for their high piezoelectricity is still unclear, which hinders property optimization. Here we report the achievement of high temperature stability (less than 10% variation for electric field-induced strain from 27 8C to808 degrees C), good fatigue properties (stable up to 106 cycles) as well as an enhanced piezoelectric coefficient (d(33)) of 525 pC N-1 in (1 -x)(K1-yNay)(Nb1-zSbz) O-3-xBi(0.5)(Na1-wKw) 0.5HfO3 (KNNS-BNKH) ceramics through manipulating the rhombohedral-tetragonal (R-T) phase boundary. The structural origin of their high piezoelectric performance can be attributed to a hierarchical nanodomain architecture, where the local structure inside nanodomains comprises R and T nanotwins. The physical origin can be attributed to low domain wall energy and nearly vanishing polarization anisotropy, facilitating easy polarization rotation among different states. We believe that the new breakthrough will open a window for the practical applications of KNN-based ceramics.

Abstract:The electromechanical behavior of (1−x)Bi0.5Na0.5TiO3–xK0.5Na0.5NbO3 (BNT-KNN) lead free piezoelectric ceramics is investigated for 0⩽x⩽0.12 to gain insight into the antiferroelectric-ferroelectric (AFE-FE) phase transition on the basis of the giant strain recently observed in BNT-based systems. At x≈0.07, a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) between a rhombohedral FE phase and a tetragonal AFE phase is found. While the piezoelectric coefficient is largest at this MPB, the total strain further increases with increasing KNN content, indicating the field-induced AFE-FE transition as the main reason for the large strain.

Abstract:Because of growing environmental concerns, the development of lead-free piezoelectric materials with enhanced properties has become of great interest. Here, we report a giant piezoelectric coefficient (d(33)) of 550 pC/N and a high Curie temperature (T-C) of 237 degrees C in (1-x-y)K(1-w)Na(w)Nb(1-z)Sb(z)O(3-)xBiFeO(3-)yBi(0.5)Na(0.5)ZrO(3) (KNwNSz-xBF-yBNZ) ceramics by optimizing x, y, z, and w. Atomic-resolution polarization mapping by Z-contrast imaging reveals the intimate coexistence of rhombohedral (R) and tetragonal (T) phases inside nanodomains, that is, a structural origin for the R T phase boundary in the present KNN system. Hence, the physical origin of high piezoelectric performance can be attributed to a nearly vanishing polarization anisotropy and thus low domain wall energy, facilitating easy polarization rotation between different states under an external field.

Abstract:Straightly investigation of the structure-property relationship in the multiphase (K,Na)NbO3-based systems is attractive since constructing multiphase coexistence has been proved as the leading strategy to achieve high piezoelectric performance. In this study, we directly revealed a reversible electric field-induced tetragonal-orthorhombic (T-O) phase transition and the structural correlation to the high performance by in-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The T and O phase coexistence is continuously observed during the whole bipolar electric cycling, among which O phase is energetically preferred in high field region and T phase is near coercive electric field. The synergistic crystal lattice variations and extensive phase fraction changes suggest that the reversible transition between the coexisted T and O phases acts as a bridge for polarization switching. Insights from this work will facilitate a deep understanding of the enhanced properties in KNN-based piezoelectrics and also shed light on the structural-related mechanism of other piezoelectric systems.

Abstract:Domain switching not only exhibits a great effect on piezoelectric performance, but also serves as foundation of some ferroelectric applications, such as ferroelectric nonvolatile memories and nonlinear optical devices. Therefore, a thorough understanding in the process and mechanism of domain switching is of vital significance. In this paper, we observed the process of domain switching under electric field by controlling poling conditions. The domain structures, polarization orientation, and piezoelectric performance of K0.52Na0.48NbO3 single crystals poled at different temperatures and electric fields were investigated. We found that the polarization-rotation in poling process of the crystals occurs in steps and along a specific conversion path: [1¯01] - [011] - [1¯10]. Furthermore, poling under specific conditions can construct specific domains, which can be used in optical-function devices and may significantly promote the design of new generation ferroelectric memory devices.

Abstract:A hierarchical micro-/nanoscale domain structure is revealed in MC phase of (1−x)Pb(Mg1∕3Nb2∕3)O3–xPbTiO3 single crystal near the morphotropic phase boundary by combination of analytical electron microscopy and polarized light microscopy. The hierarchical domain structure is a self-assembling of nanodomains with tetragonal structure, submicrodomains appearing as monoclinic, and microdomains exhibiting the same monoclinic state due to an average effect. The outstanding piezoelectric properties may result from the cooperative response of the hierarchical micro-/nanoscale domain structure.

Abstract:(K,Na)NbO3 (KNN)-based ceramics have attracted considerable attention owing to their excellent piezoelectric performance in the polymorphic phase boundary (PPB); however, many researchers have found that the optimal composition usually appears on the tetragonal side near the PPB zone. In this study, it is found that the maximum piezoelectric performance is achieved in the PPB region for unpoled ceramics due to the more efficient and facile polarization switching. However, the most outstanding piezoelectricity shifts to the tetragonal side after the ceramics are poled. Raman spectra and first-principles calculations reveal the occurrence of a phase transformation from a tetragonal to monoclinic structure under an external electric field. Hence, the unpoled tetragonal ceramics transform to a two-phase coexistence condition after the poling process and exhibit the best electrical properties driven by the combined effects of polarization switching and rotation. This study reveals that the electric-field-induced phase transformation leads to the optimal composition on the tetragonal side, and this can provide useful guidance for the design of high-performance KNN-based materials.

Abstract:Polarization switching in lead-free (K 0.40 Na 0.60 )NbO 3 (KNN) single crystals was studied by switching spectroscopy piezoresponse force microscopy (SS-PFM). Acquisition of multiple hysteresis loops on a closely spaced square grid enables polarization switching parameters to be mapped in real space. Piezoresponse amplitude and phase hysteresis loops show collective symmetric/asymmetric characteristics, affording information regarding the switching behavior of different domains. As such, the out-of-plane polarization states of the domains, including amplitudes and phases can be determined. Our results could contribute to a further understanding of the relationships between polarization switching and polarization vectors at the nanoscale, and provide a feasible method to correlate the polarization hysteresis loops in a domain under an electric field with the polarization vector states.

Abstract:In order to identify the contribution of the dopants to enhanced properties of KNN-based ceramics, (1−x)(K0.48Na0.52)(Nb0.96Sb0.04)O3–xBa0.6Ca0.4ZrO3 [(1−x)KNNS–xBCZ] lead-free piezoceramics were prepared by the conventional sintering method, and effects of BCZ on phase transition and polar characteristics of the ceramics are investigated. The results of XRD analysis and lattice parameters indicate the introduction of BCZ leads to compositional-dependent polymorphic phase transition (PPT) between R and O phase and no T phase is involved. Besides, (1−x)KNNS–xBCZ possess enhanced piezoelectric properties compared with pure KNN, i.e., d33=214pC/N. The probable mechanism is addressed here in the view of molecular field, and combining with our previous work, an alternative approach for targeted option of the dopants so as to dramatically improve piezoelectric properties of KNN-based ceramics is given, and namely, PPT involving R and T phase resulting from lattice deformation and the impurities in A site with higher internal electric field should be taken into consideration.

Abstract:K0.5Na0.5NbO3 (KNN)-based bulk ceramics show superior piezoelectric coefficient by constructing the morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) between rhombohedral and tetragonal phases. However, it is a challenge for KNN films to obtain the superior electrical properties with the same MPB composition, because of the serious volatilization of alkali ions and substrate-induced stress. Therefore, the MPB composition in films could be different from bulk ceramics. The lead-free piezoelectric 0.92KNN-0.07BaZrO(3) (BZ)-0.01Bi(0.5)Na(0.5)TiO(3) (BNT) and 0.91KNN-0.08BZ-0.01BNT films were prepared, referring to the MPB composition of bulk ceramics. For comparison, the 0.95KNN-0.04BZ-0.01BNT and 0.88KNN-0.11BZ-0.01BNT films far away from the MPB composition of bulk ceramics were prepared together. Their crystallographic phase, domain morphologies and ferroelectric switching show a dependence of BZ amount. With increase of the BZ content, the (100)-preferential orientation and out-of-plane self-polarization of films enhanced. Because the 0.08 BZ film shows the higher self-polarization and lower KNN content, compared with 0.04 BZ film, it shows the stronger piezoelectric response but not a higher dielectric constant.
