Abstract:Ab initio calculations have been performed on a series of complexes formed between halogen-containing molecules and ammonia to gain a deeper insight into the nature of halogen bonding. It appears that the dihalogen molecules form the strongest halogen-bonded complexes with ammonia, followed by HOX; the charge-transfer-type contribution has been demonstrated to dominate the halogen bonding in these complexes. For the complexes involving carbon-bound halogen molecules, our calculations clearly indicate that electrostatic interactions are mainly responsible for their binding energies. Whereas the halogen-bond strength is significantly enhanced by progressive fluorine substitution, the substitution of a hydrogen atom by a methyl group in the CH(3)X...NH(3) complex weakened the halogen bonding. Moreover, remote substituent effects have also been noted in the complexes of halobenzenes with different para substituents. The influence of the hybridization state of the carbon atom bonded to the halogen atom has also been examined and the results reveal that halogen-bond strengths decrease in the order HC triple bond CX > H(2)C=CHX approximately O=CHX approximately C(6)H(5)X > CH(3)X. In addition, several excellent linear correlations have been established between the interaction energies and both the amount of charge transfer and the electrostatic potentials corresponding to an electron density of 0.002 au along the R-X axis; these correlations provide good models with which to evaluate the electron-accepting abilities of the covalently bonded halogen atoms. Finally, some positively charged halogen-bonded systems have been investigated and the effect of the charge has been discussed.
Linear σ-hole⋯CO⋯σ-hole intermolecular interactions between carbon monoxide and dihalogen molecules XY (X, Y=Cl, Br)

Abstract:Carbon monoxide can interact with two dihalogen molecules XY (X, Y=Cl, Br) in the form of X(Y)⋯COX(Y)⋯CO⋯X(Y)X(Y) trimeric complex, and their nature and characteristics were investigated at MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ level without and with counterpoise method, together with single point calculations at CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVDZ level. The optimized geometries, stretching modes and interaction energies of a series of X(Y)⋯COX(Y)⋯CO⋯X(Y)X(Y) trimeric complexes were obtained and discussed. The cooperativity in these complexes was evaluated. EDA analyses reveal that the electrostatic interaction is the dominant net driving force in each trimer, but the contributions of other interactions like exchange, dispersion and polarization interactions are also important. QTAIM and NCI analyses confirm the existence of attractive halogen-bonding interactions. Additionally, EDDMF analysis was employed for the component dimers of these trimers, which indicates that the formation of halogen-bonding interactions is closely related to the charge shift and the rearrangement of electronic density in the formation of these complexes. The results would provide valuable insight into for these linear halogen bonds.

Abstract:Triangular halogen trimers (RX)(3), where X = Br, I and R represents H, H3C, H2FC, HF2C, F3C, CH2=CH, CH equivalent to C, and Ph, have been investigated using the density functional theory in the Perdew, Burke, and Ernzerhof method. We report herein the optimized geometries of the stable structures, their vibrational frequencies, and binding energies with the two- and three-body terms. All trimer structures possess a cyclic array of halogen atoms in the type II approach by virtue of the nonspherical atomic charge distribution around the halogens. The (BrBr)-Br-... interactions in trimers are very weak, whereas the (II)-I-... interactions in trimers are relatively stronger. While all bromine trimers and most of iodine trimers are predicted to be noncooperative, three of iodine trimers show weak cooperativity. The analysis of vibration modes reveals that all halogen trimers exhibit no especially remarkable frequency shifts. It is also shown that the electrostatic contribution plays a major role in the halogen(...)halogen interactions in halogen trimers. In contrast to bromine trimers, the relative contribution of charge-transfer component to the halogen(...)halogen interactions becomes more important for iodine trimers.
A New Unconventional Halogen Bond CX···HM Between HCCX (X = Cl and Br) and HMH (M = Be and Mg): an Ab Initio Study

Abstract:In this article, a new type of halogen‐bonded complex YCCX···HMY (X = Cl, Br; M = Be, Mg; Y = H, F, CH3) has been predicted and characterized at the MP2/aug‐cc‐pVTZ level. We named it as halogen‐hydride halogen bonding. In each YCCX···HMY complex, a halogen bond is formed between the positively charged X atom and the negatively charged H atom. This new kind of halogen bond has similar characteristics to the conventional halogen bond, such as the elongation of the CX bond and the red shift of the CX stretch frequency upon complexation. The interaction strength of this type of halogen bond is in a range of 3.34–10.52 kJ/mol, which is smaller than that of dihydrogen bond and conventional halogen bond. The nature of the electrostatic interaction in this type of halogen bond has also been unveiled by means of the natural bond orbital, atoms in molecules, and energy decomposition analyses. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Cooperative effects in FH/Li⋯HCCX⋯OH2 complexes (X=F, Cl, Br, H)

Abstract:The dimers with general formula FH/FLi⋯HCCX and HCCX⋯OH2, and the trimers FH⋯HCCX⋯OH2 (X=F, Cl, Br, H), were optimized computationally to stable structures. These model systems derive their strength from a combination of H⋯π (or Li⋯π) electrostatic interactions in the T-shaped FH/FLi⋯HCCX dimers and halogen bonding between the X and the O atom of H2O (or CH⋯O hydrogen-bonding in HCCH complexes). These cooperative interactions in the trimer clusters yield a non-additive energy which enhances the stability by between 7% and 10%. The variation in the interaction energies, as well as other selected properties, for different X is rationalized and discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Halogen bonding is emerging as a significant driving force for supramolecular self-assembly and has aroused great interest during the last two decades. Among the various halogen-bonding donors, we take notice of the ability of 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene (1,4-DITFB) to co-crystallize with diverse halogen-bonding acceptors in the range from neutral Lewis bases (nitrogen-containing compounds, N-oxides, chalcogenides, aromatic hydrocarbons and organometallic complexes) to anions (halide ions, thio/selenocyanate ions and tetrahedral oxyanions), leading to a great variety of supramolecular architectures such as discrete assemblies, 1D infinite chains and 2D/3D networks. Some of them act as promising functional materials (e.g. fluorescence, phosphorescence, optical waveguide, laser, non-linear optics, dielectric and magnetism) and soft materials (e.g. liquid crystal and supramolecular gel). Here we focus on the supramolecular structures of multicomponent complexes and their related physicochemical properties, highlight representative examples and show clearly the main directions that remain to be developed and improved in this area. From the point of view of crystal engineering and supramolecular chemistry, the complexes summarized here should give helpful information for further design and investigation of the elusive category of halogen-bonding supramolecular functional materials.

Abstract:Halogen bonding, a specific intermolecular noncovalent interaction, plays crucial roles in fields as diverse as molecular recognition, crystal engineering, and biological systems. This paper presents an ab initio investigation of a series of dimeric complexes formed between bromobenzene and several electron donors. Such small model systems are selected to mimic halogen bonding interactions found within crystal structures as well as within biological molecules. In all cases, the intermolecular distances are shown to be equal to or below sums of van der Waals radii of the atoms involved. Halogen bonding energies, calculated at the MP2/augcc-pVDZ level, span over a wide range, from -1.52 to -15.53 kcal/mol. The interactions become comparable to, or even prevail over, classical hydrogen bonding. For charge-assisted halogen bonds, calculations have shown that the strength decreases in the order OH- > F- > HCO2- > Cl- > Br-, while for neutral systems, their relative strengths attenuate in the order H2CS > H2CO > NH3 > H2S > H2O. These results agree with those of the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) since bond critical points (BCPs) are identified for these halogen bonds. The QTAIM analysis also suggests that strong halogen bonds are more covalent in nature, while weak ones are mostly electrostatic interactions. The electron densities at the BCPs are recommended as a good measure of the halogen bond strength. Finally, natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis has been applied to gain more insights into the origin of halogen bonding interactions.
Halogen Bonding-Driven Formation of Supramolecular Macrocycles and Double Helix

Abstract:The crystal structures of three intramolecularly hydrogen bonded rigid aromatic amide derivatives, which all bear one iodine atom at one end as the donor and one pyridine unit at the other end as the acceptor, have been described to reveal the utility of halogen bonding in inducing the formation of supramolecular macrocycles. All the three compounds formed intermolecular I center dot center dot center dot N halogen bonding. For short compound 1, halogen bonding induced the formation of an extended supramolecular array. For longer folded compounds 2 and 3, halogen bonding could hold two molecules to form supramolecular macrocycles even by adopting a highly distorted, energetically less favorable conformation (for 3). Depending on the solvent for the growth of crystals, compound 3 could also gave rise to a halogen bonded supramolecular double helix. Abstract:Abstract. In this work, the synthesis and structural study by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction of compounds of general formula Ch(C6H4CH2X)2 (Ch = O, S; X = Cl, Br, I) is reported. These compounds contain two flexible hydrocarbonated arms –CH2–X in the ortho positions to the Ch heteroatom. These compounds were synthesized through a linear synthesis starting from diphenylether or diphenylsulfide. Based on the structural analysis, we describe the more relevant molecular features as well as the non-covalent interactions that the heavy halogen atoms display with other moieties that promote the cohesion of the crystal arrangement. The Hirshfeld analysis displayed that the X···π, X···X, and C–H···X interactions are quite significant in the crystal arrangement. Resumen. En este trabajo, se describen la síntesis y el estudio estructural de difracción de rayos-X de monocristal de seis compuestos con fórmula general Ch(C6H4CH2X)2 (Ch = O, S; X = Cl, Br, I), que contienen dos brazos hidrocarbonados flexibles –CH2–X en las posiciones orto al heteroátomo Ch. Estos compuestos fueron sintetizados a través de una síntesis lineal, partiendo de difeniléter o difeniltioéter. A través del análisis estructural se describen las características moleculares más relevantes, así como las interacciones no-covalentes que presentan los átomos de halógeno pesados con otros grupos funcionales para dar cohesión a la red cristalina. El estudio de las superficies de Hirshfeld mostró que las interacciones X···π, X···X y C–H···X son muy relevantes en esta cohesión.

Abstract:A series of dimeric complexes formed between bromocarbon molecules and two anions (Br- and CN-) have been investigated by using MP2 method. The quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) and the second-order perturbation natural bond orbital (NBO) approaches were applied to analyze the electron density distributions of these complexes and to explore the nature of charge-assisted halogen bonding interactions. As anticipated, these interactions are significantly stronger relative to the corresponding neutral ones. The results derived from ab initio calculations described herein reveal a major contribution from the electrostatic interaction on the stability of the systems considered. Beside the electrostatic interaction, the charge-transfer force and the second-order orbital interaction also play an important role in the formation of the complexes, as a NBO analysis suggested. The presence of halogen bonds in the complexes has been identified in terms of the QTAIM methodology, and several linear relationships have been established to provide more insight into charge-assisted halogen bonding interactions. Abstract:Trans-5,10-bis(1-bromodifluoroacetyl-1-ethoxycarbonyl-methylidene)thianthrene (1b) was prepared from the reaction of BrCF2COC(N-2)CO2Et with thianthrene. X-ray single crystal diffraction analysis showed that the intermolecular halogen bonding and hydrogen bonding coexisted in this compound. The bromine atom acted as an electron acceptor in the halogen bond and an electron donor in the hydrogen bond. It is the first example that the bromine atom acted as such a dual role in the hydrogen and halogen bond.

Abstract:A series of complexes formed between bromine-containing molecules RBr and HF have been investigated at the MP2(full)/aug-cc-pvdz level of theory. This, together with a previous work [J.W. Zou, Y.J. Jiang, M. Guo, G.X. Hu, B. Zhang, H.C. Liu, Q.S. Yu, Chem. Eur. J. 11 (2005) 740] on the halogen-bonded RBr⋯NH3 complexes, offers a quantitative insight into the nucleophile ‘head on’ and electrophile ‘side on’ interactions of halogens. It has been shown that the stronger electron-withdrawing ability of the moiety bound to the bromine is, the weaker is the Br⋯H interaction to which it gives rise, which is contrary to the trend probed in the RBr⋯NH3 complexes. Several linear relationships have been established to provide further understanding of the ‘amphiphilicity’ of covalently-bonded halogens. The topological parameters obtained in terms of Bader's atoms in molecules (AIM) theory have also been applied for the analysis of these Br⋯H interactions.

Abstract:Charge-shift (CS) bonding is a new bonding paradigm in the field of chemical bonds. Our recent study has revealed that certain Cu/Ag/Au-bonds display both CS bonding and ω-bonding characters. In this investigation, we extend our study to halogen bonding. Our focus is on scrutinizing the CS bonding in halogen-bonded BXY (B is a small Lewis base H2O or NH3; X and Y are halogen atoms) complexes by using natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis, natural resonance theory (NRT), and atoms in molecules (AIM) methods. The primary objective is to establish a connection between halogen bonding (B–X) in BXY and CS bonding in free XY (di-halogens). The calculations indicate that the studied BXY can be classified into two types. One type with a weak halogen bond shows closed-shell interaction. The other type with a stronger B–X interaction exhibits both CS bonding and ω-bonding characters (as seen in NH3ClF, NH3BrF, and NH3IF). Another interesting finding is a novel propensity that the CS bonding in free XY tends to carry over the halogen bonding in BXY, and the same propensity is found in Cu/Ag/Au ω-bonded species. The present study may offer an approach to probe CS bonding in many more 3c/4e ω-bonded molecules.

Abstract:In equimolar mixture of monomers N≡C - Cl ( M−1 ) and C=N - H ( M−2 ), formation of N...H hydrogen-bonded complex HB-Dim and C...Cl halogen-bonded complex XB-Dim compete with each other. Values of counterpoise-corrected interaction energy indicate that HB-Dim is absolute winner in such a competition. Existence of N...H HB- and C...Cl XB-interactions is characterized through geometrical parameters analysis, Quantum theory of atoms-in-molecules descriptors, and Independent gradient model based on Hirshfeld partition of molecular density. Interaction energy decomposition reveals that electrostatic with orbital interactions and, electrostatic with dispersion interactions are main driving forces for formation of, respectively, HB- and XB-Dim . Moreover, substantially stronger electrostatic and orbital interactions characterized with Molecular electrostatic potential and Extended Transition State-Natural Orbitals for Chemical Valence analyses explain why formation of HB-Dim is quite preferred over that of XB-Dim . Two N...H HB- and C...Cl XB-interactions, present at the same time, make each other slightly strength in ternary complex Trim .

Electron Topological and Energetic Study of the Intermolecular Halogen Bonding Interactions in Complexes H2o Center Dot Center Dot Center Dot M (M = F-2, Clf, and Cf4)

Abstract:The halogen bonding complexes H2O center dot center dot center dot M (M = F-2, ClF, and CF4) in comparison with the hydrogen bonding H2O center dot center dot center dot HF complex are studied by high-level ab initio calculations and electron topological atoms-in-molecules (AIM) analyses. The basis set superposition error corrections are important to predict if the structures are in good agreement with the experimental results. Both the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVTZ calculations and the AIM analyses indicate a interaction strength order: H2O center dot center dot center dot HF > H2O center dot center dot center dot ClF > H2O center dot center dot center dot F-2 > H2O center dot center dot center dot CF4, with the interaction energies -7.91, -4.16, -1.11, and -1.05 kcal/mol, respectively. The symmetry-adapted perturbation theory analyses have been carried out towards understanding of the nature of the halogen bonding interactions in the complexes H2O center dot center dot center dot M (M = F-2, ClF, and CF4), where the exchange energies are the predominant repulsive components. For the complexes involving polar monomers, the hydrogen bonding H2O center dot center dot center dot HF and the halogen bonding H2O center dot center dot center dot ClF, the largest attractive contributions are the electrostatic energies. However, in H2O center dot center dot center dot F-2 and H2O center dot center dot center dot CF4, the attractive dispersion energies become more important, and the induction energy in the former complex is a little higher than that in the latter. In contrary to the red-shifts of H-F, Cl-F, and F-F bond stretching vibrational frequencies in the complexes H2O center dot center dot center dot M (M = HF, ClF, and F-2), the blue-shifts are predicted for C-F bonds neighboring water in H2O center dot center dot center dot CF4.

Abstract:In this work, the hydrogen bonds and halogen bonds in the complexes between Y2CTe (Y = H, F, CH3) and XF (X = F, Cl, Br, I) have been studied by quantum chemical calculations. We found three interesting abnormalities regarding the interactions. Firstly, the strength of halogen bonds increases in the order of IF < BrF < ClF < F2. Secondly, the halogen bonds formed by F2 are very strong, with an interaction energy in the range between −199.8 and −233.1 kJ/mol. Thirdly, all the halogen bonds are stronger than the hydrogen bonds in the systems we examined. All these results are against the general understanding of halogen bonds. These apparent abnormal properties are reconciled with the high polarizability of the Te atom and the strong inducing effect of F on the Te atom of Y2CTe. These findings provide a new perspective on halogen bonds. Intermolecular Halogen Bonding-Controlled Self-Assembly of Hydrogen Bonded Aromatic Amide Foldamers

Abstract:Six intramolecular hydrogen bonding-induced aromatic amide foldamers have been prepared through the formation of the hydrazone bond in the last step. The compounds are attached with one trifluoroiodobenzene as halogen donor and one pyridine ring as halogen bonding acceptor. Intermolecular I center dot center dot center dot N halogen bond formed by the above two units and other kinds of halogen bonds are designed to modulate the stacking of the compounds in the solid state. It is revealed that intermolecular halogen bonding can induce the molecules to form extended zigzag arrays, dimeric macrocycles or supramolecular helices. The formation of the dimeric macrocycles is favored when the halogen bond donor and acceptor are located in a parallel manner. Longer tetrameric and pentameric sequences give rise to more curved, crescent conformations, with the two halogen bonding donor and acceptor on the ends to form a large angle. For two compounds, polar methanol or water prevents the formation of the intermolecular end-to-end halogen bonding by forming I center dot center dot center dot O halogen bonding. The pentameric compound is connected by methanol to form supramolecular single helices. For another pentameric compound, strong I center dot center dot center dot O=C halogen bonding is found to induce the backbone to self-assemble into supramolecular single helices. The single helices further stack to afford supramolecular double helix arrays.

Abstract:1,4-Di(bromomethyl)-2,5-diiodobenzene ( 1 ), 2,5-diiodo-1,4-di(hydroxymethyl)benzene diacetate ( 2 ), and 1,1'-[(2,5-diiodo-1,4-phenylene)bis(methylene)]dipyridinium diiodide ( 3 ) were synthesized, and their crystallographic data are reported. All three crystal structures are characterized by the stacked packing of the planar molecules and the presence of halogen bonds I⋅⋅⋅Br, I⋅⋅⋅O, and I⋅⋅⋅I, respectively. The largest number of halogen bonds was found in compound 1 , in which there are two I⋅⋅⋅Br bonds per halogen atom. Compounds 2 and 3 contain one halogen bond per halogen atom; however, these bonds are significantly shorter than those in compound 1 . All crystals were studied by IR spectroscopy and simultaneous thermal analysis. Compound 1 , which has no ionic or hydrogen bonds, melts at a higher temperature compared to ionic compound 3 (218 and 200°С, respectively) due to the presence of a larger number of intermolecular halogen bonds. Compound 2 melts at a lower temperature (151°С), which is characteristic of esters.
