Abstract:The emergence of flexible sensors addresses the limitations of traditional detection equipment, such as large size, high cost, and inconvenient portability. These sensors have significantly advanced the development of wearable electronic devices for applications in electronic skin, energy harvesting, and energy storage. To enhance the sensitivity of flexible sensors, we developed a hierarchical polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofiber-based piezoelectric sensor. By utilizing coaxial electrospinning, we fabricated nanofibers with hollow interiors and porous outer walls. Additionally, microstructures were constructed on the fiber membrane surface by modifying the collector's shape. The resulting microstructured hollow PVDF nanofiber membrane exhibited high beta-phase content (91.31 %), excellent flexibility (maximum strain 56.9 %), and high porosity (88.94 %). The sensor demonstrated a sensitivity of 2.7 V/N (1.08 V/kPa) and a maximum output voltage of 10.1 V, approximately three times higher than that of solid PVDF nanofibers without microstructures. Even after 14,400 cycles of impact, the sensor maintained stable output. The sensor was successfully applied to human activity monitoring and gesture recognition, showcasing its ability to monitor various human activities, respond rapidly (60.4 ms), and synchronously control a mechanical palm to perform different gestures. This work highlights the potential of hierarchically structured hollow PVDF nanofibers in advancing the performance and application scope of flexible piezoelectric sensors.
Nanoscale domain imaging and local piezoelectric coefficient d33 studies of single piezoelectric polymeric nanofibers

Abstract:In this work, it is shown that the electrospun poly(vynilidene fluoride) (PVDF) nanofibers have polymer chains re-oriented along the fiber axis and the β-phase content reaches 72.7%, therefore being able to be implemented into electroactive device components. Further, nanoscale domain imaging and local piezoelectric coefficient d33 of the nanofibers have been intensively studied using piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). The piezoelectric response (PR) imaging and butterfly amplitude loop have been demonstrated to confirm that the nanodomains result from the out-of-plane displacement and the d33 has an uneven distribution with the higher values on the fiber periphery.

Abstract:Piezoelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) nanofibers fabricated by electrospinning have drawn increasing levels of attention in the fields of flexible sensors and nanogenerators. However, the directional dependence of piezoelectricity of electrospun nanofibers remains elusive. In this study, the piezoelectric performances of individual nanofibers are characterized by piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM), while the effects of annealing on β-phase crystallinities are investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The experimental results reveal that the as-spun P(VDF-TrFE) nanofibers form higher content of β-phase compared with spin-coated films, and the content of β-phase increases by annealing. The annealed P(VDF-TrFE) nanofiber exhibits distinct vertical polarization switching characteristics. The high piezoelectric output in the thickness direction and low piezoelectric output in the longitudinal direction of the nanofiber mats further confirm that the preferential dipole orientation of electrospun P(VDF-TrFE) nanofibers is normal to the surface of the substrate. Highly aligned P(VDF-TrFE) nanofibers show directional strain sensing ability due to the piezoelectric and mechanical anisotropy.

Abstract:This research primarily focuses on the effect of changing electric field directions on the crystal structure of piezoelectric fibers, notably, P(VDF–TrFE) and P(VDF–TrFE–CTFE). The study also explores the deformation mechanisms of fibers at micro- and nanoscales. A significant aspect of the research involves the application of parallel and perpendicular electric fields and observation of their impact on fiber properties. In situ wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) studies are crucial for determining the nanoscale properties when the electric field orientations change. The results show that the direction of the electric field significantly affects the sign (positive or negative) of the dipole vector within the β-crystal lattice structure of the fibers. This can be attributed to the rotation of dipole vectors in response to the electric field–fiber alignment angle. Furthermore, the research identifies the crystal plane (201,111) β as exhibiting the highest magnitude of piezoelectric response strain in the β phase. The study also employs scanning electron microscopy and digital image correlation (DIC) to reveal the material's morphology and to assess fiber strain distribution at the micrometer scale under different voltages. DIC results particularly highlight that stress concentration leads to the deformation of fibers into voids, which are spaces between fibers created by electrospinning. This work comprehensively elucidates how deformation works in piezoelectric polymers by connecting large-scale changes observed in fibers through DIC and small-scale changes observed in WAXD studies presenting the piezoelectric strain responses at the crystal plane.

Abstract:Many emerging applications strongly demand flexible and efficient electromechanical conversion materials. Polymeric piezoelectric materials, with ability of large area and low temperature processing, are attractive to obtain wide applications for electromechanical sensors, transducers, and mechanical energy harvesters. A major drawback of the polymeric piezoelectric materials is their much lower piezoelectric performance property, such as piezoelectric strain coefficient, than their ceramic counterparts. Here, outstanding piezoelectric performance properties with giant effective strain and voltage coefficients of −116 pm V−1 and −1180 V mm N−1 are achieved in electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride nanofiber films from the precursor solution modified with hydrated salt. The experimental results and theoretical analysis clarify a synergistic interactive role from the hydrated salt and the electric field during electrospinning, effectively leading to polarization enhancement and alignment, and hence the giant macroscopic piezoelectric coefficients in the obtained electrospun fiber films. The demonstrated results and the understanding on the underlying mechanism exhibit the potential and strategy in achieving high‐performance functional materials through dedicated control on their nanostructures and polarizations. Giant effective piezoelectric strain and voltage coefficients are achieved in electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride nanofibers from solution modified by hydrated salt. The investigation clarifies a synergistic interactive mechanism involving the hydrated salt and the electric field during electrospinning leading to polarization enhancement and alignment, showing a strategy in achieving high‐performance functional polymeric materials through dedicated control in their nanostructures and polarizations.

Abstract:Piezoelectricity in macromolecule polymers has been gaining immense attention, particularly for applications in biocompatible, implantable, and flexible electronic devices. This paper introduces core-shell-structured piezoelectric polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers chemically wrapped by graphene oxide (GO) lamellae (PVDF/GO nanofibers), in which the polar β-phase nanocrystals are formed and uniaxially self-oriented by the synergistic effect of mechanical stretching, high-voltage alignment, and chemical interactions. The β-phase orientation of the PVDF/GO nanofibers along their axes is observed at atomic scale through high resolution transmission electron microscopy, and the β-phase content is found to be 88.5%. The piezoelectric properties of the PVDF/GO nanofibers are investigated in terms of piezoresponse mapping, local hysteresis loops, and polarization reversal by advanced piezoresponse force microscopy. The PVDF/GO nanofibers show a desirable out-of-plane piezoelectric constant (d33) of -93.75 pm V-1 (at 1.0 wt % GO addition), which is 426% higher than that of the conventional pure PVDF nanofibers. The mechanism behind this dramatic enhancement in piezoelectricity is elucidated by three-dimensional molecular modeling.

Abstract:Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) has been considered as a promising piezoelectric material for advanced sensing and energy storage systems because of its high dielectric constant and good electroactive response. Electrospinning is a straightforward, low cost, and scalable technology that can be used to create PVDF-based nanofibers with outstanding piezoelectric characteristics. Herein, we summarize the state-of-the-art progress on the use of filler doping and structural design to enhance the output performance of electrospun PVDF-based piezoelectric fiber films. We divide the fillers into single filler and double fillers and make comments on the effects of various dopant materials on the performance and the underlying mechanism of the PVDF-based piezoelectric fiber film. The effects of highly oriented structures, core-shell structures, and multilayer composite structures on the output properties of PVDF-based piezoelectric nanofibers are discussed in detail. Furthermore, the perspectives and opportunities for PVDF piezoelectric nanofibers in the fields of health care, environmental monitoring, and energy collection are also discussed.
Process Investigation on Robust Electrospinning of Non-Aligned and Aligned Polyvinylidene Fluoride Nanofiber Mats for Flexible Piezoelectric Sensors

Abstract:Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofiber mats have played a significant role in wearable electronic devices that have been in great demand in recent decades. Although manifold PVDFbased freely stacked or well-aligned nanofiber mats created via the electrospinning process have been demonstrated to achieve multisensory capabilities with high sensitivity and long detection range, rarely have any of them proved their ability with a stable process and accurate processing parameters. In this work, we successfully developed freely stacked and well-aligned PVDF nanofiber mats with diameters ranging from micrometers to nanometers, providing stable performance for wearable electronic devices. Through in-depth investigations into material preparation, electrospinning, and fiber collection processes, we revealed the relationship between the nanofiber morphology, β-phase fraction, and piezoelectric output with various process parameters. Characterized by analytical methods, we have established a mature, reliable nanofiber mat fabrication system capable of mass-producing PVDF nanofibers with the required diameter and consistent properties. At 18 kV voltage and 60% RH humidity, the uniformity of the fiber diameter and β-phase content was maintained in a favorable range. When the drum speed increased to 2000 r/s, the fiber orientation and β-phase content increased. We assembled aligned PVDF nanofiber mats with conductive fabric in a flexible piezoelectric sensor that successfully monitored different body movements and produced an output voltage of 0.1 V. This study provides the necessary process parameters for the large-scale production of high-quality PVDF nanofiber mats and provides clear guidance for beginners in the field of nanofiber mat manufacturing.

Abstract:Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) is among the most attractive piezo-polymers due to its excellent piezoelectricity, lightweight, flexibility, high thermal stability, and chemical resistance. PVDF can exist under different forms of films, membranes, and (nano)fibers, and its piezoelectric property related to its β phase content makes it interesting for energy harvesters and wearable applications. Research investigation shows that PVDF in the form of nanofibers prepared by electrospinning has more flexibility and better air permeability, which make them more suitable for these types of applications. Electrospinning is an efficient technique that produces PVDF nanofibers with a high β phase fraction and crystallinity by aligning molecular dipoles (–CH2 and –CF2) along an applied voltage direction. Different nanofibers production techniques and more precisely the electrospinning method for producing PVDF nanofibers with optimal electrospinning parameters are the key focuses of this paper. This review article highlights recent studies to summarize the influence of electrospinning parameters such as process (voltage, distance, flow rate, and collector), solution (Mw, concentration, and solvent), and ambient (humidity and temperature) parameters to enhance the piezoelectric properties of PVDF nanofibers. In addition, recent development regarding the effect of adding nanoparticles in the structure of nanofibers on the improvement of the β phase is reviewed. Finally, different methods of measuring piezoelectric properties of PVDF nanofibrous membrane are discussed.

Abstract:Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) can be made electroactive by properly mechanical stretching and electric poling treatments of its film, which may be easily realized by single-step electrospinning. This technique is acknowledged as an effective approach to induce rich ferroelectric β-phase in electrospun PVDF fibers; however, the investigation of dipole arrangement during the electrospinning process is still lacking. Here, the piezoelectricity of β-PVDF fibers by electrospinning and forcespinning, a mechanical spinning process without static electric field bias, has been demonstrated. Results show that the electrospun fibers can generate piezoelectric voltage after deformation, while the forcespun fibers nearly show no piezoelectricity for the same condition, revealing that electric field during the electrospinning process can perform in situ poling effect and therefore induces preferred dipole orientation in electrospun PVDF fibers. Further experiments performed in this work show that piezoelectricity of the electrospun fibers increases with increasing fraction of β-phase and/or the applied electric field strength of electrospinning, which provides good guideline for preparing high-performance piezoelectric fibers.

Abstract:The crystal structure has a great influence on the dielectric and piezoelectric performance of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF). In this work, we prepared PVDF films with two typical crystalline phases (α and β). In situ Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) and Piezoelectric force microscopy (PFM) were employed to investigate the responses of different PVDF crystalline phases to charge mobility, polarization, and piezoelectric properties. We used a homemade Kelvin probe force microscope (KPFM) to inject charges into the two crystalline phases to investigate the differences in the response of different crystalline phases of PVDF to electrical excitation on a microscopic scale. It was found that the α-phase has a lower charge injection barrier and is more susceptible to charge injection and that the α-phase is accompanied by a faster charge dissipation rate, which makes it easier to accumulate charge at the interface between the α-phase and β-phase PVDF. Moreover, the PFM polarization manipulation showed no change in the amplitude and phase diagram of the α-phase under ±10 V bias. In contrast, the β-phase showed a clear polarization reversal phenomenon and a significant increase in piezoelectric amplitude, which is consistent with its polar intrinsic properties. This study provides valuable insights into the multiphase contributions and a reference for designing advanced PVDF dielectrics.
Pre-Strained Piezoelectric PVDF Nanofiber Array Fabricated by Near-Field Electrospining on Cylindrical Process for Flexible Energy Conversion

Abstract:In this study, near-field electrospining on hollow cylindrical (NFES) process was used to fabricate permanent piezoelectricity of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) piezoelectric nanofibers. With in situ electric poling, mechanical stretching and heating during NFES process, the pre-strained piezoelectric PVDF nanofibers with high stretchability and energy conversion efficiency can be applied at low-frequency ambient vibration to convert mechanical energies into electrical signals. By adjusting rotating velocity of the hollow cylindrical glass tube on X-Y stage, electric field, baking temperature and carbon nanotube (CNT) concentration in PVDF solution, the crystalline of β phase, polarization intensity and morphology of piezoelectric fiber can be controlled. XRD (X-ray diffraction) observation of PVDF fibers was characterized. With electric field 0.5×107 V/m (needle-to-tube distance 2 mm and DC voltage 5 kV), rotating velocity 400 r.p.m, baking temperature 80 °C and 0.03 wt% CNT in NFES process, it reveals a high diffraction peak at 2θ=20.8° of piezoelectric crystal β-phase structure. Then the array nanofibers were transferred onto a parallel copper electrode by using flexible insulation epoxy/PI film to provide packaging protection. When the sensor was tested under 5 Hz vibration frequency, the maximum induced voltage was 29.4 mVp-p.

Abstract:Electrospinning is considered to be an efficient method to prepare piezoelectric thin films because of its ability to transform the phase of the polymers. A core-sheath structure can endow fibers with more functions and properties. In this study, fibers with a core-sheath structure were prepared using polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) included with nanoparticles (NPs) as the shell layer and polycaprolactone (PCL) as the core layer. Their mechanical and piezoelectric properties were studied in detail. During the course of the electrospinning process, PVDF was demonstrated to increase the amount of its polar phase, with the help of nanoparticles acting as a nucleating agent to facilitate the change. PCL was chosen as a core material because of its good mechanical properties and its compatibility with PVDF. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) assessments revealed that the fibers have a core-sheath structure, and shell layers were loaded with nanoparticles. Mechanical testing showed that the core layer can significantly improve mechanical properties. The XRD patterns of the core-sheath structure fibers indicated the β phase domain the main component. Piezoelectric testing showed that the doped nanoparticles were able to enhance piezoelectric performances. The increases of mechanical and piezoelectric properties of core-sheath structure fibers provide a feasible application for wearable electronics, which require flexibility and good mechanical properties.

Abstract:From phase field simulations, we investigate the size-dependent polarization distribution in ferroelectric nanostructures embedded in a nonferroelectric medium. The simulation results exhibit that vortex structures of polarizations and single-domain structures are formed in ferroelectric nanodots and nanowires, respectively. Furthermore, a single-vortex structure is formed in the ferroelectric nanodots if the aspect ratio of thickness to lateral size is less than a critical value, whereas the ferroelectric nanodots are in a multivortex state if the aspect ratio exceeds the critical value. When the aspect ratio approaches infinity, nanodots will become nanowires, in which polarizations are homogeneous. (c) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:In the past two decades, many studies on piezoelectric nanofibers (NFs) prepared from poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and its copolymers, including single NFs, randomly oriented nonwoven mats, and aligned NFs, have been reported. However, studies on the relationships between the PVDF NF diameter, the orientation of the β-phase crystals inside NFs, and the piezoelectric properties of the NFs are still limited. In this study, the effect of the fiber diameter on the internal molecular packing/orientation and piezoelectric properties of aligned PVDF NF thin films was investigated. Herein, piezoelectric thin films composed of densely packed, uniaxially aligned, PVDF NFs with diameters ranging from 228 to 1315 nm were prepared by means of electrospinning with a rotating collector and successive hot-pressing and poling. The effect of the diameters of PVDF NFs on their internal structures, as well as the piezoelectric properties of the thin films, was investigated. All prepared NFs mainly contained β-phase crystals with a similar total crystallinity. The orientation of the β-phase crystals inside the NFs increased with an increase in the fiber diameter, resulting in an improved transverse piezoelectric coefficient (d31) for the thin films. The output voltage of the prepared thin films reached a maximum of 2.7 V at 104 Hz.

Abstract:We fabricated highly ordered poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) nanowires with anisotropic piezoelectric response by using a template-free solution method. The molecular dipoles in the nanowires were preferentially oriented parallel relative to the substrate plane, while the macromolecular backbones were oriented perpendicular to the substrate plane. As the piezoelectric effect in the organic ferroelectric polymer originates from the alignment of molecular dipoles, this distinct molecular orientation gives rise to a significant difference in lateral and vertical piezoelectric responses in the nanowires. A flat-on lamellar structure and a thin layer melt crystallization nanowire formation mechanism were proposed. The results demonstrate a facile and efficient route for fabricating P(VDF-TrFE) nanowires with highly anisotropic piezoelectric response that are promising for nanoscale energy harvesting devices.
Fabrication and Characterization of Aligned Flexible Lead-Free Piezoelectric Nanofibers for Wearable Device Applications

Abstract:Flexible lead-free piezoelectric nanofibers, based on BNT-ST (0.78Bi0.5Na0.5TiO₃-0.22SrTiO₃) ceramic and poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) copolymers, were fabricated by an electrospinning method and the effects of the degree of alignment in the nanofibers on the piezoelectric characteristics were investigated. The microstructure of the lead-free piezoelectric nanofibers was observed by field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and the orientation was analyzed by fast Fourier transform (FFT) images. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed that the phase was not changed by the electrospinning process and maintained a perovskite phase. Polarization-electric field (P-E) loops and piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) were used to investigate the piezoelectric properties of the piezoelectric nanofibers, according to the degree of alignment-the well aligned piezoelectric nanofibers had higher piezoelectric properties. Furthermore, the output voltage of the aligned lead-free piezoelectric nanofibers was measured according to the vibration frequency and the bending motion and the aligned piezoelectric nanofibers with a collector rotation speed of 1500 rpm performed the best.

Abstract:The intrinsic flexible character of polymeric materials also causes remarkable strain deformations along directions perpendicular to the applied stress. Here the biaxial response in the shear piezoelectricity of polyvinylidenefluoride copolymers is analyzed and their full piezoelectric tensors are provided. The microscopic shear is exploited in single suspended nanowires bent by localized loading to couple flexural deformation and transverse piezoelectric response.

Abstract:Scientists have been fascinated by the spider's spinning process, which enables its silk to be incredibly strong. This paper explores the use of a long needle in the electrospinning process to control the inner structure of a PVDF nanofiber. The results show that a longer needle can significantly enhance the nanofiber's piezoelectric performance. The mechanism behind this enhancement is elucidated using the laminar flow theory.
