Abstract:A green, energy-effective mussel-inspired synthetic approach for the production of a Ag@AgCl photocatalyst mediated by the polymerization of dopamine through a one-pot method at room temperature is reported. The composites with tunable morphology and compositions via the controlling the initial pH value of polymerization and concentration of PVP exhibit controlled catalytic performance under visible light. The products formed in weak alkaline perform the highest activity, good stability and recyclability, due to the suitable proportion between Ag and AgCl.
Ag NPs Modified Plasmonic Z-scheme Photocatalyst Bi4Ti3O12/Ag/Ag3PO4 with Improved Performance for Pollutants Removal under Visible Light Irradiation

Abstract:In a typical Z-scheme photocatalytic system, the visible light responsive component typically plays a crucial role and is often confined to materials sensitive to visible light. In addition, metallic nanodots or quantum dots are used as effective cocatalysts in the construction of plasmonic Z-scheme photocatalysts because of their strong light harvesting capacities under visible light illumination. In the present study, Bi4Ti3O12 nanosheets dominated with (001) crystal planes were successfully prepared via a facile molten-salt method, and BTO/Ag/APO composite samples were prepared by a simple precipitation method followed by photoreduction. The obtained BTO/Ag/APO composite exhibits improved photocatalytic activity for the decontamination of two typical organic pollutants, compared to bare Bi4Ti3O12 and Ag3PO4. Based on various characterization techniques, a Z-scheme electron transfer mechanism induced by the plasmonic effect was hypothesized to clarify the enhanced catalytic performances in this system. On the other hand, the LSPR effect of deposited silver nanoparticles can boost the molecular oxygen activation process and generate more superoxide radicals. This study provides a promising approach to apply highly effective photocatalytic degradation for environmental remediation.
Enhanced photoactivity on Ag/Ag3PO4 composites by plasmonic effect

Abstract:The work presented here deals with the photoreduction in metallic silver nanoparticles onto the surface of Ag3PO4 and resulting photocatalytic activity enhancement toward degradation of dye molecules, namely Rhodamine B (Rh. B) as a model compound, from aqueous solution under UV or visible light irradiation. Our results clearly indicated that the photoactivity of Ag3PO4 was significantly enhanced by depositing an optimum amount of silver nanoparticles, even though the adsorption kinetics rate and capacity decreased after the silver nanoparticles agglomerate extensively. The surface plasmon resonance (SPR) excited between the silver nanoparticles and Rh. B interface is a physical origin and responsible for the boosted photoactivity, which strongly depends on the specific wavelength of the incident light. This work provides and suggests a novel scheme for Ag/Ag3PO4 composites having plasmonic effect on the interface with detailed experimental and theoretical study.
Biomimetic design and synthesis of visible-light-driven g-C3N4 nanotube @polydopamine/NiCo-layered double hydroxides composite photocatalysts for improved photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity

Abstract:In the practical process of photocatalytic H2 evolution, optimizing the ability of light absorption and charge spatial separation is the top priority for improving the photocatalytic performance. In this study, we elaborately engineer neoteric g-C3N4 nanotube@polydopamine(pDA)/NiCo-LDH (LPC) composite photocatalyst by combining hydrothermal and calcination method. In the LPC composite system, the one-dimensional (1D) g-C3N4 nanotubes with larger specific surface area can afford more active sites and conduce to shorten the charge migration distance, as well as the high-speed mass transfer in the nanotube can accelerate the reaction course. The g-C3N4/NiCo-LDH type-II heterojunction can efficaciously stimulate the spatial separation of photo-produced charge. In addition, pDA as heterojunction metal-free interface mediums can provide multiple action (π-π* electron delocalization effect, adhesive action and photosensitization). The optimized LPC nanocomposite displays about 3.3-fold high photoactivity for H2 evolution compared with the g-C3N4 nanotube under solar light irradiation. In addition, the cycle experiment result shows that the LPC composite photocatalyst possesses superior stability and recyclability. The resultant g-C3N4@pDA/NiCo-LDH composite photocatalyst displays the potential practical application in the field of energy conversion.

Abstract:Polydopamine functionalized plasmonic nanocomposites with well-distributed catalytically active small gold nanoislands around large gold core were fabricated without using any chemical reductant or surfactant. The optical properties, surface molecular structures, and ensemble catalytic activity of the gold nanocomposites were investigated by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry and UV-vis spectroscopy, respectively. Moreover, the considerable catalytic activity of the nanocomposites toward 4-nitrophenol reduction was real time monitored by dark-field spectroscopy techniques at the single-nanoparticle level avoiding averaging effects in bulk systems. According to the obtained plasmonic signals from individual nanocomposites, the electron charging and discharging rates for these nanocomposites during the catalytic process were calculated. Our results offer new insights into the design and synthesis of plasmonic nanocomposites for future catalytic applications as well as a further mechanistic understanding of the electron transfer during the catalytic process at the single-nanoparticle level.

Abstract:AbstractPlasmonic nanomaterials coupled with catalytically active surfaces can provide unique opportunities for various catalysis applications, where surface plasmons produced upon proper light excitation can be adopted to drive and/or facilitate various chemical reactions. A brief introduction to the localized surface plasmon resonance and recent design and fabrication of highly efficient plasmonic nanostructures, including plasmonic metal nanostructures and metal/semiconductor heterostructures is given. Taking advantage of these plasmonic nanostructures, the following highlights summarize recent advances in plasmon‐driven photochemical reactions (coupling reactions, O2 dissociation and oxidation reactions, H2 dissociation and hydrogenation reactions, N2 fixation and NH3 decomposition, and CO2 reduction) and plasmon‐enhanced electrocatalytic reactions (hydrogen evolution reaction, oxygen reduction reaction, oxygen evolution reaction, alcohol oxidation reaction, and CO2 reduction). Theoretical and experimental approaches for understanding the underlying mechanism of surface plasmon are discussed. A proper discussion and perspective of the remaining challenges and future opportunities for plasmonic nanomaterials and plasmon‐related chemistry in the field of energy conversion and storage is given in conclusion.
Construction of a Novel Ag/Ag3PO4/MIL-68(In)-NH2 Plasmonic Heterojunction Photocatalyst for High-Efficiency Photocatalysis

Abstract:To boost the visible light catalytic performance of typical metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials (MIL-68(In)-NH 2 ), a novel stable Z-scheme Ag/Ag 3 PO 4 /MIL-68(In)-NH 2 plasmonic photocatalyst was constructed by electrostatic attraction, co-precipitation reaction, and in-situ photoreduction reaction methods for the first time. The photocatalytic activities of the photocatalysts are systematically explored by the photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A (BPA) and reduction of Cr(VI) under visible light. Ag/Ag 3 PO 4 /MIL-68(In)-NH 2 displays the best photocatalytic performance among the as-prepared photocatalysts. The rate constant of BPA degradation on Ag/Ag 3 PO 4 /MIL-68(In)-NH 2 is 0.09655 min -1 , which is better than many reported photocatalytic materials. It also achieved a maximum rate constant of 0.02074 min -1 for Cr(VI) reduction. The boosted photocatalytic performance is due to the improved absorption caused by localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR), effective interface charge transfer and separation, and more reactive sites provided by the large specific surface area. Besides, the photocatalytic degradation pathway of BPA is concluded according to GC-MS analysis. Finally, a more reasonable Z -scheme mechanism is speculated and verified through a series of characterizations and simulations, such as timeresolved photoluminescence spectroscopy (TRPL), electron spin resonance (ESR), and finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. Abstract:Ag-polydopamine nanoparticles co-decorated defective mesoporous carbon nitride nanosheets assemblies (Ag-PDA/DCN) with wide spectrum responseare fabricated. The Ag-PDA/DCN assemblies exhibit excellent photocatalytic hydrogen production performance. The visible light and near-infrared light driven photocatalytic hydrogen evolution rate is up to 3840 μmol h −1 g −1 , which is 20 and 7 times higher than those of DCN and PDA/DCN, respectively. This is mainly because the Ag-polydopamine nanoparticles not only form an efficient carrier transport path and realize fast electron transport, but also further extend the photoresponse of DCN, resulting in an obvious photothermal effect to further improve the photocatalytic activity. More importantly, the formed Ag nanoparticles by the low-temperature photodeposition method is smaller in size and better in dispersibility. Ag nanoparticles act as a co-catalyst in Ag-PDA/DCN, which can effectively separate the spatially photogenerated charge carriers. Compared to three systems with different Ag decoration positions, Ag-PDA/DCN with Z-scheme charge transfer mechanism is more favorable for promoting photocatalytic performance. This co-decorated strategy provides a new idea for developing low-cost Pt-free photocatalysts for solar energy conversion.

Enhancement of Visible Photocatalytic Activity Via Ag@C3N4 Core–shell Plasmonic Composite

Abstract:A novel and simple synthetic approach toward core-shell Ag@C3N4 nanocomposites is developed. Ag@C3N4 core-shell nanostructures were formed via reflux treatment of Ag nanoparticles with graphitic C3N4 nanosheets in methanol. The core-shell hybrid photocatalysts showed dramatic photoinduced electron-hole separation efficiency and photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation. The photocurrent intensity, photocatalytic activity for the photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) and hydrogen evolution reaction of Ag@C3N4 were about 4, 1.8 and 30 times as that of pure C3N4 sample, respectively. The enhanced photocatalytic activity for core-shell Ag@C3N4 originated from a combined result of the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect for Ag and hybrid effect from C3N4, resulting in the coupling interaction of the enhanced light absorption intensity, high separation efficiency of photogenerated electrons-holes, longer lifetime of charge carriers and its favorable adsorptivity. Abstract:Metal cyanamide compounds are an emerging class of photoactive materials for solar energy applications. Although silver cyanamide (Ag2NCN) applied in visible-light-driven photocatalysis has been demonstrated, the photocatalytic performance is unsatisfactory. Herein, a composite of Ag2NCN nanoparticles supported on ultrathin carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets is synthesized by combining thermal annealing and an in situ precipitation method. Due to the band alignment between Ag2NCN and g-C3N4, a type-II semiconductor heterojunction is built up to improve the photocatalytic activity of pristine Ag2NCN. The as-prepared nanocomposites exhibit enhanced photocatalytic activity for organic dye decolorization under visible light irradiation compared with pure Ag2NCN and pristine g-C3N4 nanosheets. The enhancement of photocatalytic performance can be ascribed to the synergistic effects between Ag2NCN and g-C3N4, which include improved light absorption, superior charge separation, uniform dispersion and smaller size of Ag2NCN loaded on high surface area g-C3N4 nanosheets. The kinetics model and degradation mechanism of the nanocomposites are also proposed.

Abstract:In recent years, exploring efficacious visible-light photocatalysis has been one of core concerns owing to potential applications for energy utilization and environmental remediation. Among all nanostructured photocatalysts, the nano-hierarchical material composed of two-dimensional (2D) nanosheets is terrific owing to abundant 2D coupling interfaces that can decrease the diffusion distance of photogenerated carriers and facilitate the interfacial electronic transfer. Herein, utilizing the biomimetic adhesion, 2D/2D graphitic carbon nitride nanosheet/carbonized polydopamine (CNNS/CPDA) nanocomposites were fabricated via the dopamine (DA) self-polymerization on the surface of graphitic carbon nitride (GCN) followed by carbonization and delamination. Wherein CPDA acts a crucial role for the reinforcement of photocatalytic degradation activity in CNNS/CPDA nanocomposites. On the one hand, CPDA has strong adsorption capacity that can accelerate the adsorption and degradation of rhodamine B (RhB) molecules. On the other hand, as one of carbon materials, CPDA has high conductivity and contacts with CNNS tightly, which is conducive to the transfer of photo-induced carriers. Hence, for the optimal CNNS/CPDA nanocomposite (CNNS/CPDA-2), the RhB degradation rate (0.0466 min−1) is 5.1 times as high as that of pure GCN. This kind of 2D/2D nanocomposites based on one-pot biomimetic strategy may hold significant promise in practical applications of water treatment.

Abstract:Reasonably designing Z-scheme photocatalysts has been deemed to be an ideal and prospective way to develop new and highly efficient photocatalytic materials for removing environmental pollutants. Herein, a new type of AgxH3-xPMo12O40/Ag nanorods/g-C3N4 1D/2D Z-scheme photocatalyst (abbr. APM/C3N4) was fabricated by a simple self-assembly procedure. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images revealed that the 1D silver polyoxometalate (POM) nanorods loaded with Ag nanoparticles (AgxH3-xPMo12O40/Ag = APM) were well dispersed on the plicated 2D g-C3N4 nanosheets. Photocatalytic experiments demonstrated that these composite catalysts exhibited an excellent and durable photocatalytic performance for the degradation of methyl orange (MO) and tetracycline (TC) and the photoreduction of Cr(vi) under visible light, which was significantly higher than that of the individual components and most of the previous reported materials. The photocatalytic mechanism suggests that superoxide and holes are the main active species in MO photodegradation, demonstrating its Z-scheme photocatalytic process. The synergistic effects of the enhanced light absorption, unique 1D/2D hybrid heterojunction structure, good and efficient interfacial contact and Z-scheme process endowed the as-prepared APM/C3N4 composites with excellent performance. This study may provide a new comprehension into the design of polyoxometalate-based Z-scheme hybrid materials for photocatalytic applications in the removal of organic and inorganic pollutants from wastewater.
Synthesis of high-efficient g-C3N4/polydopamine/CdS nanophotocatalyst based on bioinspired adhesion and chelation

Abstract:By utilizing the bioinspired adhesion and metal chelation of polydopamine (PDA), a kind of ternary nanocomposites that consist of the graphitic carbon nitride nanosheet (CNNS), PDA layer and cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanocrystals were synthesized. In the resultant CNNS/PDA/CdS nanocomposites, CdS nanocrystals about 5−10 nm in diameter are scattered on the CNNS surface in the presence of the PDA layer. Due to the energy band matching, CNNS constructs a type II heterostructure with CdS nanoparticles via the mediation of the electroconductive PDA layer, thus enhancing the photocatalytic activity. Compared with pristine CdS and CNNS, the CNNS/PDA/CdS nanocomposite conspicuously shows superior photocatalytic performance under visible light above 420 nm, which can degrade 97 % Rhodamine B (RhB) molecules within 80 min. The introduction of a PDA layer between CNNS and CdS not only promotes the photon energy absorption but also facilitates the separation of photoinduced electron-hole pairs.

Abstract:Plasmonic Au-mediated polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) has been recognized as one of the promising materials for photocatalytic applications due to its excellent properties in wide visible light spectrum, however it is still hindered by low catalytic efficiency. In this work, it was established that strong metal-support interactions (MSI) at the interface between plasmonic Au nanoparticles (NPs) and PCN nanosheets (PCNS) improves its photocatalytic efficiency. The resulting Au/PCNS2.5 exhibits excellent photocatalytic activity with H2 evolution rate up to 4.84 mmol g-1h-1 under visible light, 12.4 times higher than that of bulk PCN. Such strong MSI significantly strengthens the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effect of Au NPs and the charge “pump” role of Schottky junctions at Au-PCNS interface, resulting in broad light absorption range as well as effective separation and transfer of charge carrier. This work provides a new way to design the plasmonic photocatalysts for splitting water as well as other plasmon-driven chemical reactions.

Abstract:There is a pressing global need to increase the use of renewable energy sources and limit greenhouse gas emissions. Towards this goal, highly efficient and molecularly selective chemical processes that operate under mild conditions are critical. Plasmonic photocatalysis uses optically-resonant metallic nanoparticles and their resulting plasmonic, electronic, and phononic light-matter interactions to drive chemical reactions. The promise of simultaneous high-efficiency and product-selective reactions with plasmon photocatalysis provides a compelling opportunity to rethink how chemistry is achieved. Plasmonic nanoparticles serve as nanoscale 'antennas' that enable strong light–matter interactions, surpassing the light-harvesting capabilities one would expect purely from their size. Complex composite structures, combining engineered light harvesters with more chemically active components, are a focal point of current research endeavors. In this review, we provide an overview of recent advances in plasmonic catalysis. We start with a discussion of the relevant mechanisms in photochemical transformations and explain hot-carrier generation and distributions from several ubiquitous plasmonic antennae. Then we highlight three important types of catalytic processes for sustainable chemistry: ammonia synthesis, hydrogen production and CO 2 reduction. To help elucidate the reaction mechanism, both state-of-art electromagnetic calculations and quantum mechanistic calculations are discussed. This review provides insights to better understand the mechanism of plasmonic photocatalysis with a variety of metallic and composite nanostructures toward designing and controlling improved platforms for green chemistry in the future.

Abstract:The development of efficient photocatalysts for the degradation of organic pollutants and production of hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) is an attractive two-in-one strategy to address environmental remediation concerns and chemical resource demands. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3 N4 ) possesses unique electronic and optical properties. However, bulk g-C3 N4 suffers from inefficient sunlight absorption and low carrier mobility. Once exfoliated, ultrathin nanosheets of g-C3 N4 attain much intriguing photocatalytic activity. Herein, a mussel-inspired strategy is developed to yield silver-decorated ultrathin g-C3 N4 nanosheets (Ag@U-g-C3 N4 -NS). The optimum Ag@U-g-C3 N4 -NS photocatalyst exhibits enhanced electrochemical properties and excellent performance for the degradation of organic pollutants. Due to the photoformed valence band holes and selective two-electron reduction of O2 by the conduction band electrons, it also renders an efficient, economic, and green route to light-driven H2 O2 production with an initial rate of 0.75 × 10-6 m min-1 . The improved photocatalytic performance is primarily attributed to the large specific surface area of the U-g-C3 N4 -NS layer, the surface plasmon resonance effect induced by Ag nanoparticles, and the cooperative electronic capture properties between Ag and U-g-C3 N4 -NS. Consequently, this unique photocatalyst possesses the extended absorption region, which effectively suppresses the recombination of electron-hole pairs and facilitates the transfer of electrons to participate in photocatalytic reactions.

Abstract:The co-condensation of dicyandiamide and aminobenzonitrile (ABN) followed by post-calcination in NaCl-KCl molten salt can endow the Polymeric Carbon Nitride (PCN) with enhanced electron delocalization and defects (-CN and nitrogen defects), leading to extended optical absorption range and improved separation rate of photogenerated carriers. As a consequence, the active-optimized DCN-NaK-90ABN accounts for 76 times promotion than DCN in photodegradation of bisphenol A (BPA) under visible light. More importantly, the photocatalytic activity is demonstrated by the significantly enhanced degradation of BPA and H 2 production under λ > 500 nm, which are much better than those of most previously reported PCN-based photocatalysts. Furthermore, the theoretical calculations certify the validity of proposed structure and explain the reactive mechanism combing with the experimental results. Our findings shed light on a new pathway for designing the efficient photocatalysts to capture the long wavelength solar power.

Abstract:For environmental applications, it is crucial to rationally design and synthesize photocatalysts with positive exciton splitting and interfacial charge transfer. Here, a novel Ag-bridged dual Z-scheme Ag/g-C3N4/CoNi-LDH plasmonic heterojunction was successfully synthesized using a simple method, with the goal of overcoming the common drawbacks of traditional photocatalysts such as weak photoresponsivity, rapid combination of photo-generated carriers, and unstable structure. These materials were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, TEM UV-Vis/DRS, and XPS to verify the structure and stability of the heterostructure. The pristine LDH, g-C3N4, and Ag/g-C3N4/CoNi-LDH composite were investigated as photocatalysts for water remediation, an environmentally motivated process. Specifically, the photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline was studied as a model reaction. The performance of the supports and composite catalyst were determined by evaluating both the degradation and adsorption phenomenon. The influence of several experimental parameters such as catalyst loading, pH, and tetracycline concentration were evaluated. The current study provides important data for water treatment and similar environmental protection applications.
Remarkably Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance of Au/AgNbO3 Heterostructures by Coupling Piezotronic with Plasmonic Effects

Abstract:Both localized surface plasmon resonance (SPR) effect in noble metal nanostructures and piezotronic effect in piezoelectric semiconductors have been proven to be effective in improving photocatalytic performance. In this work, we report a novel heterostructured piezo-photocatalyst by decorating plasmonic Au nanoparticles (AuNPs) on piezoelectric AgNbO3 nanocubes. The optimized Au/AgNbO3 nanocomposites exhibit significantly enhanced photocatalytic activities toward hydrogen evolution reaction from water (392 mu mol g-1 h-1) and degradation of organic pollutants (first-order rate constant of 0.054 min-1 for RhB) assisted by ultrasonic mechanical vibration (110 W, 40 kHz), which are about 2.2-and 5.7-times that of under only light irradiation, respectively. The considerably promoted photocatalytic activity can be attributed to a synergetic coupling of SPR and piezotronic effect, by which energetic hot electrons generated on the plasmonic AuNPs can be effective extracted onto AgNbO3 driven by mechanical vibration induced piezo-potential near the heterojunction. This work undoubtedly demonstrates that the integration of SPR and piezotronic effects holds great promise to improve the photo-catalytic efficiencies.
