Abstract:The effective cleavage of C-O bonds in linkages of lignin was one of the significant strategies promoting lignin valorization. Herein, the strategy of C-O bonds cleavage of lignin using metal triflate as the catalyst was developed. The carboxylic acid or alcohol could be used as the nucleophile to stabilize the reactive intermediates formed during the depolymerization of lignin, and the corresponding ester/ether compounds could be obtained. This catalytic system was suitable for the C-O bond cleavage in α-O-4 and β-O-4 linkages with excellent efficiency. Additionally, reaction conditions were optimized. The reaction mixture was detected by 1 H NMR, and no other byproducts were found. As for treated lignin samples, the cleavage of C-O bonds in linkages was determined by 2D HSQC NMR, the increased content of the phenol hydroxyl group was proved by FT-IR, and the reduced molecular weight was investigated by GPC. Furthermore, multiple phenolic compounds were detected by GC-MS in the reaction mixtures.

Abstract:Lignin, the planet's most abundant renewable source of aromatic compounds, is difficult to degrade efficiently to welldefined aromatics. We developed a microwave-assisted catalytic Swern oxidation system using an easily prepared catalyst, MoO2Cl2(DMSO)(2), and DMSO as the solvent and oxidant. It demonstrated high efficiency in transforming lignin model compounds containing the units and functional groups found in native lignins. The aromatic ring substituents strongly influenced the selectivity of -ether phenolic dimer cleavage to generate sinapaldehyde and coniferaldehyde, monomers not usually produced by oxidative methods. Time-course studies on two key intermediates provided insight into the reaction pathway. Owing to the broad scope of this oxidation system and the insight gleaned with regard to its mechanism, this strategy could be adapted and applied in a general sense to the production of useful aromatic chemicals from phenolics and lignin.

Abstract:Selective cleavage of the aromatic CO bonds in lignin is a crucial step for lignin valorization to produce value-added chemicals, however, the development of efficient catalysts for mild conversions is still challenging. Herein, non-precious skeletal CuZnAl catalysts were firstly reported for the depolymerisation of lignin dimers and real organosolv lignin via the catalytic transfer hydrogenation (CTH) method. Typical lignin dimers, including α-O-4, β-O-4 and 4-O-5 types, were all effectively converted to the corresponding aromatics and alcohols in isopropanol under mild reaction condition. Furthermore, birch organosolv lignin was also well depolymerized into monophenols in 56.1 wt% yield. Experiments revealed that the water brought by the wet catalyst effectively promoted the CO bond cleavage, but slightly decreased the catalyst reactivity toward hydrogenation in isopropanol. Reaction evolution profiles and control experiments suggested that three reaction pathways were included, with the CO ether bond cleavage and subsequent hydrogenolysis taking precedence over the dehydrogenation or hydrodeoxygenation routes. This work provides an economical and environmentally-friendly method for the selective cleavage of lignin and lignin model compounds into value-added chemicals, which holds great promise in industrial application.

Abstract:AbstractOxidative cleavage of C(OH)−C bonds to afford carboxylates is of significant importance for the petrochemical industry and biomass valorization. Here we report an efficient electrochemical strategy for the selective upgrading of lignin derivatives to carboxylates by a manganese‐doped cobalt oxyhydroxide (MnCoOOH) catalyst. A wide range of lignin‐derived substrates with C(OH)‐C or C(O)‐C units undergo efficient cleavage to corresponding carboxylates in excellent yields (80–99 %) and operational stability (200 h). Detailed investigations reveal a tandem oxidation mechanism that base from the electrolyte converts secondary alcohols and their derived ketones to reactive nucleophiles, which are oxidized by electrophilic oxygen species on MnCoOOH from water. As proof of concept, this approach was applied to upgrade lignin derivatives with C(OH)‐C or C(O)‐C motifs, achieving convergent transformation of lignin‐derived mixtures to benzoate and KA oil to adipate with 91.5 % and 64.2 % yields, respectively.

Abstract:The cleavage of C-O bonds is one of the most promising strategies for lignin-to-chemicals conversion, which has attracted considerable attention in recent years. However, current catalytic system capable of selectively breaking C-O bonds in lignin often requires a precious metal catalyst and/or harsh conditions such as high-pressure H2 and elevated temperatures. Herein, we report a novel protocol of paired electrolysis to effectively cleave the Cβ-O-4 bond of lignin model compounds and real lignin at room temperature and ambient pressure. For the first time, "cathodic hydrogenolysis of Cβ-O-4 linkage" and "anodic C-H/N-H cross-coupling reaction" are paired in an undivided cell, thus the cleavage of C-O bonds and the synthesis of valuable triarylamine derivatives could be simultaneously achieved in an energy-effective manner. This protocol features mild reaction conditions, high atom economy, remarkable yield with excellent chemoselectivity, and feasibility for large-scale synthesis. Mechanistic studies indicate that indirect H* (chemical absorbed hydrogen) reduction instead of direct electron transfer might be the pathway for the cathodic hydrogenolysis of Cβ-O-4 linkage.

Abstract:Catalytic conversion of renewable lignin to aromatics can effectively alleviate the fossil resource crisis. Herein, we prepared porous nitrogen-doped carbon-supported cobalt nanoparticle catalyst (CoNC) using a SiO2 template and tested its catalytic performance for cleavage of the β-O-4 ether bond in lignin model compounds. It was found that the catalyst pyrolyzed in a nitrogen atmosphere at 900 °C (CoNC-900) could catalyze 2-phenoxyacetophenone to ethylbenzene and phenol effectively, affording both in 99.0% yields. Further study indicated that the catalytic system was efficient for transformation of various β-O-4 ketones with methoxyl groups with high yields of desired products. The excellent catalytic performance was related to the cobalt nanoparticles, large pore volume, and specific surface area. Furthermore, the catalyst could be reused five times without obvious loss of the activity, indicating its stability during the reaction process. Abstract:The proper design of catalyst structure is crucial for highly selective hydrodeoxygenation. Here, a strategy of in-situ topological transformation was proposed to prepare a MOF/LDH composite self-sacrificial template mediated by NiCo-MOF template, and a metal-monomer/metal-oxide composite heterojunction catalyst was synthesized. The result indicated that the formation of Ni3+ species on the surface of t-NiCo-60 catalyst was generated through this unique structural transformation, which promoted the charge movement between Ni-Co and caused more Co2+ to be formed, and this simultaneous reverse valence modulation between Ni3+/Co2+ facilitated the generation of oxygen vacancies, which improved the hydrogen heterocleavage activation on the catalyst and enabled the t-NiCo-60 catalyst to remove oxygen-containing groups from lignin derivatives with high selectivity. Achieved complete conversion of lignin derivatives in a short duration of time and highly selective generation of the target products (92.5 % selectivity for cyclohexanol and 99.9 % selectivity for 2-methoxy-4-methylphenol). This research provides a new approach for the efficient upgrading of lignin derivatives.

Abstract:The highly‐efficient utilization of lignin and its derivatives is of great importance. Phenylacetaldehyde, as an important industrial raw material, is rarely reported to be directly obtained from biomass sources via thermal catalytic transformation. In this work, we found that NiOOH catalyst could efficiently catalyze the cleavage of β‐O‐4 lignin model compound to phenylacetaldehyde and phenol in water without need of any exogenous hydrogen. The catalytic mechanism study indicates that NiOOH could catalyze the elimination of C α ‐OH to form an enol ether intermediate, which is then hydrated to phenylacetaldehyde and phenol.

Abstract:Efficient hydrogenolysis of C-O bonds in lignin offers a promising pathway for producing high-value-added biofuels and chemicals. However, designing an easily synthesized, highly active catalyst for this process remains a challenge. In this paper, a series of Ni-M(Pd, Pt, Ru)/C catalysts were prepared and synergized with NaOH to produce aromatic compounds from β-O-4 model compound (MC). Among the catalyst systems, Ni-0.25 % Pd/C-NaOH completely converted β-O-4 MC at mild conditions (150 °C, 2 MPa H 2 , 3 h) to produce monomers with a yield of 95.6 wt% and excellent selectivity of the bond-breaking products as high as 85.5 %. Recycling tests showed that the Ni-0.25 % Pd/C catalyst remained stable after five cycles, with high activity and without the need for a further reduction before runs. Further, the catalytic system has proven to exhibit high activity for the cleavage of other types of lignin MC, such as 4-O-5, α-O-4, β-O-4 and ether bond (diphenyl ether, benzyl phenyl ether, Guaiacolylglycerol-β-guaiacol ether, benzyl ether) and also effective for lignin from enzymatic cleavage (LEC). Hydrogenolysis of LEC achieved a monomer yield of 34.5 wt%; the molecular weight (555 g/mol) of the hydrogenolysis oligomer was significantly reduced compared to LEC (2872 g/mol). The highly active and stable Ni-0.25 % Pd/C-NaOH catalytic system provides a promising pathway for the efficient hydrogenolysis of lignin and lignin model compounds to produce high-value biofuels and chemicals.

Abstract:Selective hydrotreatment of β-O-4 ether bonds in lignin is a key strategy for the lignin valorization. The current catalytic strategy can only transfer β-O-4 model compounds to aromatics. Also, further upgrading was still needed to convert those aromatics/phenols into aviation fuels or chemicals (e.g., cycloalkanes, cycloalcohols) in a following step. Herein, a one-pot method for the hydrotreatment of lignin β-O-4 ether to cycloalkanes/cycloalcohols over NiLa/CNT was reported due to the introduction of La. The dehydroxylation of 2-phenoxy-1-phenylethan-1-ol to phenethoxybenzene was the key step during the hydrotreatment, followed by the β-O-4 bond cleavage to ethylbenzene and phenol, which was then simultaneously hydrogenated to afford ethyl cyclohexane and cyclohexanol. The catalyst acidity was found to be important during the hydrotreatment process, especially the Brønsted acid sites. This was confirmed by control experiments using different reaction intermediates as reactants, as well as analysis of products distribution and DFT calculations. Abstract:Lignin has recently attracted much attention as a promising resource to produce fuels and aromatic chemicals. The selective cleavage of C-O bond while preserving the aromatic nature has become one of the major challenges in the catalytic valorization of lignin to aromatic chemicals. In this work, we report that the selective reductive cleavage of C-O bond in lignin model compounds can be successfully achieved through heterogeneous iron catalysis. The hydrogenolysis of alpha-O-4 model linkage shows that the iron catalyst prepared by the simultaneous pyrolysis of iron acetate and 1,10-phenanthroline on activated carbon at 800 degrees C is the most active iron catalyst, affording phenol and toluene with yields of 95% and 90%, respectively. This aromatics selectivity is found to be much higher than that obtained over noble metal catalysts. The presence of N center dot center dot center dot Fe species as the active center of heterogeneous iron catalyst was confirmed by various technologies especially XPS and H-2-TPR. For the beta-O-4 model linkage, the vicinal -OH group was essential for the iron-catalyzed hydrogenolysis of ether linkage. The oxidation of the alpha-carbon in the beta-O-4 model compounds can significantly decrease the bond dissociation energy of ether linkage, giving depolymerization products in moderate to excellent yields.

Abstract:Production of mono-phenols through hydrodeoxygenation is one of the most promising routes for value-added lignin valorization. However, the adsorption characteristic of key intermediates and hydrodeoxygenation mechanism of key linkages in lignin have received inadequate attentions. In this paper, experiments combined with density functional theory calculations were done to explore the adsorption and catalytic HDO mechanism of lignin dimers. It was found that NiFe(1 1 1)-Mo 2 C(0 0 1) had a better ability on linkages activation, and showed stronger adsorption on CO containing intermediates, which was favor for further hydrodeoxygenation. Moreover, the calculation results certificated the cleavage of β-O-4 was prior to the hydrodeoxygenation of CO, and the hydrodeoxygenation of β-O-4 included a H · addition to O atom before the C-O cleavage. Finally, the elementary reactions energy barriers were efficiently reduced by NiFe(1 1 1)-Mo 2 C(0 0 1) catalyst during the hydrodeoxygenation reactions, which elucidated the superior performance of NiFe catalyst. This work provides a theoretical basis on efficient lignin utilization.

Efficient Lignin Depolymerization Process for Phenolic Products with Lignin-Based Catalysts and Mixed Solvents

Abstract:Due to their diverse functional groups and structural composition, carbon-based catalysts exhibit superior performance in various catalytic reaction systems, such as hydrogenolysis, hydrogenation, and oxidation. Herein, we propose an effective strategy of lignin liquid-phase depolymerization by applying the designed lignin-based carbon catalysts to produce aromatic chemicals. A series of Ni-Mo bimetallic carbon-based catalysts were synthesized to explore the effect of different preparation methods on the catalytic activity. The results demonstrate that the embedded Ni-Mo/C-WMO catalyst with multi-active sites of Ni, MoO3, and Mo2C results in a prominent catalytic effect on lignin depolymerization. The Ni-Mo/C-WMO catalyst can achieve a lignin conversion of 87.62% with a 42.25% monophenol yield in the methanol and water system. With the synergistic contribution of multiple active sites of the catalyst and the mixed-solvent system (water, methanol, and 1, 4-dioxane), a remarkably high yield of 62.95% of mono-phenolic compound was achieved at 260 degrees C and 3 MPa N2 with a reaction time of 4 h. The selectivity of 2methoxy-4-methylphenol and 2-methoxy-4-ethylphenol in liquid products was 40.85 and 36.42%, respectively. Vanillin, a typical product from lignin depolymerization reported in the literature, was further degraded to monophenol in this system. The outcomes also confirmed that the in situ hydrogen production system of methanol and water coupled with 1,4-dioxane facilitated the lignin depolymerization significantly.
Synergy of heterogeneous Co/Ni dual atoms enabling selective C–O bond scission of lignin coupling with in-situ N -functionalization

Abstract:Selective cleavage of C sp 2 –OCH 3 bond in lignin without breaking other types of C–O bonds followed by N-functionalization is fascinating for on-purpose valorization of biomass. Here, a Co/Ni-based dual-atom catalyst CoNi DA @NC prepared by in-situ evaporation and acid-etching of metal species from tailor-made metal-organic frameworks was efficient for reductive upgrading of various lignin-derived phenols to cyclohexanols (88.5%–99.9% yields), which had ca 4 times higher reaction rate than the single-atom catalyst and was superior to state-of-the-art heterogeneous catalysts. The synergistic catalysis of Co/Ni dual atoms facilitated both hydrogen dissociation and hydrogenolysis steps, and could optimize adsorption configuration of lignin-derived methoxylated phenols to further favor the C sp 2 –OCH 3 cleavage, as elaborated by theoretical calculations. Notably, the CoNi DA @NC catalyst was highly recyclable, and exhibited excellent demethoxylation performance (77.1% yield) in real lignin monomer mixtures. Via in-situ cascade conversion processes assisted by dual-atom catalysis, various high-value N-containing chemicals, including caprolactams and cyclohexylamines, could be produced from lignin.

Abstract:The extraction of higher-value products from lignin degradations under mild conditions is a challenge. Previous research reported efficient two-step oxidation and reduction strategies for lignin degradation, which has great significance to lignin degradation. In this paper, the mechanism about the C-O bond cleavage of lignin with and without Cα oxidations has been studied systematically. Our calculation results show that the degradation of anionized lignin with Cα oxidations is kinetically and thermodynamically feasible. In addition, the calculations predict that the anionized lignin compounds without Cα oxidation also could be degraded under mild conditions. Moreover, we propose special lignin catalytic degradation systems containing the characteristic structure of "double hydrogen bonds." The double hydrogen bonds structure could further decrease the energy barriers of the C-O bond cleavage reaction. This provides a versatile strategy to design novel lignin degradation.

An Electrocatalytic Strategy for C–C Bond Cleavage in Lignin Model Compounds and Lignin under Ambient Conditions

Abstract:Lignin presents as a renewable aromatic resource for value-added chemical production. However, it remains challenging to cleavage C-C bonds in lignin under ambient conditions. Electrochemical oxidation as a renewable energy technology presents an attractive alternative to traditional processes. Herein, we report an efficient electrocatalytic strategy for C-alpha-C-beta bond cleavage of the beta-O-4 linkage in lignin model compounds at room temperature with platinum as the anode and tert-butyl hydroperoxides (t-BuOOH in water, 70% aq soln) as the oxidants, exhibiting high yields for the aromatic aldehydes and phenols. This electrocatalytic strategy is demonstrated to be highly selective for the transformation of a broad selection of lignin model dimers, polymeric compound, and even real lignin into the desired aromatic aldehydes. Mechanistic studies indicate that the reaction may proceed via a C-beta radical process involving a peroxide intermediate. This work opens up opportunities in electrocatalysis to selectively break C-alpha-C-beta bonds and transform lignin to valuable chemicals under ambient conditions by using renewable electricity.
Breaking the Limit of Lignin Monomer Production via Cleavage of Interunit Carbon–Carbon Linkages

Abstract:Conversion of lignin into monocyclic hydrocarbons as commodity chemicals and drop-in fuels is a highly desirable target for biorefineries. However, this is severely hindered by the presence of stable interunit carbon–carbon linkages in native lignin and those formed during lignin extraction. Herein, we report a new multifunctional catalyst, Ru/NbOPO4, that achieves the first example of catalytic cleavage of both interunit C–C and C–O bonds in one-pot lignin conversions to yield 124%–153% of monocyclic hydrocarbons, which is 1.2–1.5 times the yields obtained from the established nitrobenzene oxidation method. This catalyst also exhibits high stability and selectivity (up to 68%) to monocyclic arenes over repeated cycles. The mechanism of the activation and cleavage of 5–5 C–C bonds in biphenyl, as a lignin model adopting the most robust C–C linkages, has been revealed via in situ inelastic neutron scattering coupled with modeling. This study breaks the conventional theoretical limit on lignin monomer production.
