Abstract:Our research aims at exploring a new oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalyst with effective catalytic capability, which can be used in the metal-air batteries. ORR electrocatalysts of carbon black and carbon aerogel supported Pt-based nanoparticles were synthesized by a chemical impregnation reduction method. The electrochemical measurement consisted of cyclic voltammetry (CV) and line scan of scanning electrochemical microscopy (SECM) conducted in alkaline medium as well as the single-cell tests. All the tests indicate that the Pt–Zn/carbon aerogel (Pt–Zn/CA) catalyst, with the specific discharge capacity reaching 1349.5 mA h g−1, exhibits the best catalytic performance among all the tested catalysts. The doping of Zn forms Pt-rich surface, creates more d-band vacancies, and reduces the leaching problem; the use of carbon aerogels brings larger specific surface area. These aspects have all improved the catalytic activity per unit mass.

Abstract:Fabricating the non-precious-metal catalyst with desirable catalytic performance towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is essential for Mg-air battery that adopts neutral brine electrolyte. However, the classic metal-nitrogen-carbon materials with strong ORR catalytic activity in alkaline solution usually display inferior performance than platinum-based catalysts in neutral environment. Herein, we construct a hybrid catalyst composed of cobalt nanoparticles and nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes, based on pyrolyzing the mixture of melamine, pyrazole, hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide, and 2-methylimidazole chelated with Co 2+ and Zn 2+ ions. This catalyst possesses abundant ORR catalytic active sites and mesoporous structure with large pore volume, which can result in the superior performance of Mg-air battery than that using Pt/C catalyst. Furthermore, its ORR catalytic mechanism is unraveled according to microstructure characterization and electrochemical response.

Abstract:The development of low-cost, high-performance oxygen electrocatalysts is of great significance for energy conversion and storage. As a potential substitute for precious metal electrocatalysts, the construction of efficient and cost-effective oxygen electrocatalysts is conducive to promoting the widespread application of zinc–air batteries. Herein, CoxNiyMOF nanoparticles encapsulated within a carbon matrix were synthesized and employed as cathode catalysts in zinc–air batteries. Co0.5Ni0.5MOF exhibits superior oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance and durability. The zinc–air battery assembled with Co0.5Ni0.5MOF as the air cathode exhibits a maximum power density of 138.6 mW·cm−2. These improvements are mainly attributed to the optimized metal composition of the cobalt–nickel alloy, which increases the specific surface area of the material and optimizes its pore structure. Significantly, the optimization of the electronic structure and active sites within the material has led to amplified ORR/OER activity and better zinc–air battery performance. This study underscores the immense promise of Co0.5Ni0.5MOF catalysts as feasible substitutes for commercial Pt/C catalysts in zinc–air batteries.

Abstract:The commercialization of magnesia-air batteries (Mg-air) necessitates the development of highly efficient, cost-effective, and durable electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), replacing expensive and unstable precious metal electrocatalysts. A hard template-assisted synthesis of FeCo nanoparticles immobilized on N-doped porous carbon (Fe-Co-C-N) for the ORR is reported. The half-wave potential of Fe-Co-C-N for ORR (E1/2=0.88 V vs. RHE) is elevated by 40 mV compared to that of 20 wt% Pt/C (E1/2=0.84 vs. RHE). The catalyst exhibits exceptional catalytic performance and remarkable stability. The discharge voltage of the Mg-air battery, utilizing Fe-Co-C-N as the cathode catalyst (1.29 V), surpasses that of the battery employing 20 wt% Pt/C as the cathode catalyst (1.28 V). The Mg-air battery with Fe-Co-C-N as the cathode catalyst exhibited excellent discharge stability and maintained a stable discharge for over 200 hours. The present study offers valuable insights into the structural design and regulatory mechanisms governing the performance of M-N-C catalysts in Mg-air batteries.

Moreover, the primary Mg-air battery with the CCO-600 as the cathode catalyst has been assembled. The Mg-air battery of the CCO-600 as the cathode catalyst possesses better discharge performance than the CuCo-based PBA. The open circuit voltage of CCO-600 arrives 1.76 V and energy density of 1895.95 mWh/g. This work provides an effective strategy to develop non-noble metal ORR catalyst for the application of metal-air batteries.

Abstract:The magnesium‐air (Mg‐air) batteries are regarded as a highly promising system for electrochemical energy conversion and storage, owing to exceptional energy density, notable safety and eco‐friendliness. The development of high‐performance and durable non‐noble metal catalysts for the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is crucial for advancing the practical use of Mg‐air batteries. The synergistic interaction between different metals in bimetallic catalysts is an effective strategy for enhancing the activity and stability of the catalysts. Herein, various prussian blue analogues (PBA) were selected as precursors to synthesis the bimetallic CoNi@NC, monometallic Co@NC and Ni@NC catalysts due to tunable chemical compositions. Compared with Co@NC and Ni@NC, the bimetallic CoNi@NC pyrolyzed at 600°C (CoNi@NC‐600) exhibits outstanding ORR performances and stability in alkaline (0.1 M KOH) and neutral (3.5 wt% NaCl) electrolytes. Following 5000 CV cycles, the half‐wave potentials for CoNi@NC‐600 show only minor negative shifts of 8 and 7 mV, respectively. Meanwhile, the CoNi@NC‐600 possesses the similar ORR reaction mechanism and activity with Pt/C. The primary Mg‐air battery assembled with CoNi@NC‐600 displays better discharge performances than that of Co@NC and Ni@NC. This study lays the foundation for future investigations into the advancement of non‐precious bimetallic catalysts for ORR in Mg‐air batteries.

Abstract:A series of AuPt nanoparticles supported on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (AuxPt/MWNTs) catalysts with ultrafine distribution (d ≈ 3.0 nm) were synthesized for Al-air battery cathode to enhance the oxygen reduction reaction. Among them, Au0.67Pt/MWNTs catalyst with metal loading of 10.2 wt% (Au:4.1 wt%, Pt:6.1 wt%) exhibited a superior ORR catalytic activity and competitive durability to 20 wt% Pt/C catalyst. When applied as Al-air battery, appropriate increasing Au loading encourage better battery performance. Au1.68Pt/MWNTs with 8.95 wt% of Au and as little as 5.3 wt% Pt content exhibit larger specific capacity (921 mAh g−1) and power density (146.8 mW cm−2) as well as better durability than 20 wt% Pt/C catalyst when it is assembled as cathode in Al-air battery.

Abstract:Great efforts have been focused on studying high-efficiency and stable catalysts toward oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in metal-air batteries. In view of synergistic effects and improved properties, carbon nanotubes and three-dimensional graphene (CNTs-3D graphene) hybrid catalysts developed via a well-controlled route are urgently required. Herein, a CoMn2O4 (CMO) nanoneedle-supported nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes/3D graphene (NCNTs/3D graphene) composite was prepared by in situ chemical vapor deposition (CVD) along with hydrothermal methods over a Ni foam substrate. The cyclic voltammetry and linear sweep voltammograms results indicate that the CMO/NCNTs/3D graphene hybrid possesses remarkable electrocatalytic performance toward ORR in alkaline conditions compared with NCNTs/3D graphene, CMO/3D graphene, and 3D graphene catalysts, even outperforming the commercial 20 wt % Pt/C catalyst. Moreover, the Al-air coin cell employing CMO/NCNTs/3D graphene as cathode catalysts obtains an open circuit voltage of 1.55 V and a specific capacity of 312.8 mA h g-1, which are superior to the Al-air coin cell with NCNTs/3D graphene as catalysts. This work supplies new insights to advanced electrocatalysts introducing NCNTs/3D graphene as a catalyst support to develop scalable transition-metal oxide/NCNTs/3D graphene hybrids with excellent catalytic activity toward ORR in Al-air systems.
Synergistic Effects of C/α-MoC and Ag for Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction.

Abstract:It remains challenging to prepare highly active and stable catalysts from earth-abundant elements for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Herein we report a facile method to synthesize cost-effective heterogeneous C/α-MoC/Ag electrocatalysts. Rotating disc electrode (RDE) experiments revealed that the obtained C/α-MoC/Ag exhibited much superior catalytic performance for ORR than that of C/Ag, C/α-MoC, or even the conventional Pt/C. First-principles calculations indicated that the enhanced activity could be attributed to the efficient synergistic effects between Ag and α-MoC/C by which the energy barrier for O2 dissociation has been substantially reduced. Furthermore, Li-air and Al-air cells were assembled to demonstrate the unprecedented electrochemical performance of C/α-MoC/Ag nanocomposites surpassing the Pt/C. Thus experimental results and theoretical calculations together showed that the heterogeneous C/α-MoC/Ag nanocomposites are a promising alternative to platinum for applications in industrial metal-air batteries.
MOF–Derived N–Doped C @ CoO/MoC Heterojunction Composite for Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction and Long-Life Zn–Air Battery

Abstract:The high activity and reliability of bifunctional oxygen catalysts are imperative for rechargeable metal–air batteries. However, the preparation of bifunctional non–noble metal electrocatalysts with multiple active sites remains a great challenge. Herein, an MOF–derived N–doped C–loaded uniformly dispersed CoO/MoC heterojunction catalyst for high–performance dual function was prepared by a simple “codeposition–pyrolysis” method. Experimental investigations revealed that the formation of the heterojunction can tailor the valence of Co and Mo sites, which impressively modulates the electronic properties of the active sites and promotes the electrocatalytic processes. The optimal catalyst reveals a high–wave half potential (E1/2 = 0.841 V) for ORR and a low overpotential (E10 = 348 mV) for OER. The NCCM–600–based Zn–air battery displays a high peak power density of 133.36 mW cm−2 and a prolonged cycling life of more than 650 h. This work provides avenues for the development of functional materials with enhanced properties in a variety of practical energy applications.
Mn-modified nitrogen-doped Pt-based electrocatalyst for efficient oxygen reduction in aluminum-air batteries

Abstract:In this study, a Mn-modified Pt-based catalyst loaded on nitrogen-doped Ketjen black (Mn-Pt/NKB) is prepared using a simple ethylene glycol reduction method. The size of Pt nanoparticles (NPs) is effectively controlled by doping with Mn and N. With the smallest average particle size of 1.7 nm, Mn-Pt/NKB demonstrates half-wave potentials of 0.890 and 0.688 V in the alkaline and neutral electrolytes, respectively, which are superior to those of commercial platinum on activated carbon (Pt/C). When applied as an air cathode in aluminum-air battery, it exhibits ultra-high power densities of 190 (alkaline) and 26.2 mW·cm −2 (neutral). Moreover, the voltage remains stable after 5 h of discharge. The practical application performance of the Mn-Pt/NKB catalyst in an aluminum-air battery is better than that of commercial Pt/C. Furthermore, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) mechanism on surfaces with different particle sizes is analyzed using density functional theory. Oxygen cracking is the major pathway on the surface of the small particles with lower energy consumption of 0.5 eV, while water molecule cleavage is the major pathway on the surface of the large particles with higher energy consumption of 0.97 eV. The lower energy consumption of the oxygen cracking pathway further confirms the ORR mechanism for higher activity on small-sized surfaces. This study provides a direction for the rational design of Pt-based catalysts for ORR and sheds light on the commercial development of aluminum-air batteries.

Abstract:Exploring efficient and stable non-precious metal electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction in neutral and alkaline solutions is of great importance for metal-air batteries. Herein, an efficient and stable electrocatalyst with CoNi nanoalloy (10-20 nm) uniformly embedded in porous N-doped carbon framework (CoNi-NCF) for neutral and alkaline primary Al-air batteries is prepared and studied. The CoNi-NCF electrocatalyst shows superior ORR performance in terms of half-wave potential of 0.91 V in 0.1 M KOH solution and 0.64 V in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution, outperforming those of the commercial Pt/C catalyst. Supported by in situ electrochemical Raman spectra and density functional theory calculations, the rich dual active sites of CoNi nanoalloy and porous N-doped carbon contributes to the outstanding ORR performance. Impressively, when employed as a cathode catalyst in both aqueous and solid flexible Al-air batteries, the CoNi-NCF-based Al-air batteries show the highest discharge performance, long-time durability and high flexibility, demonstrating the promising potential for practical application.
Co3Fe7/CoCx nanoparticles encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes synergistically promote the oxygen reduction reaction in Zn-air batteries

Abstract:Efficient and stable non-precious metal catalysts (NPMCs) for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are crucial for the advancement of Zn-air batteries. Herein, we report a supramolecular self-scarifying template and confinement pyrolysis strategy to obtain an efficient ORR catalyst of well-dispersed Co3Fe7/CoCx heterostructure nanoparticles encapsulated by nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (Co3Fe7/CoCx@N-CNT). The as-synthesized Co3Fe7/CoCx@N-CNT catalyst exhibited outstanding ORR activity, with a half-wave potential of 0.88 V versus a reversible hydrogen electrode, and good stability. The Zn-air battery based on the Co3Fe7/CoCx@N-CNT cathode achieved a peak power density of 265 mW cm-2 and a durability of over 200 h, which is superior to most reported NPMCs and even the Pt/C counterpart. The physical characterization and electrochemical poisoning experiments revealed that the Co3Fe7/CoCx nanoparticles in the core along with pyridine N and Fe-Nx hosted in the carbon nanotube all acted as active sites for the ORR. Further theoretical calculations showed that the charge redistribution between the Co3Fe7/CoCx nanoparticles and the Fe-Nx carbon overlayers downshifted the d-band center of Fe and optimized the adsorption ability, which boosted the ORR kinetics. This work provides an effective strategy to synthesize non-precious metal ORR catalysts with multiple active sites and highlights the synergistic role of encapsulated nanoparticles and carbon support.

Abstract:The magnesium (Mg)-air battery is considered to be the most prospective electrochemical energy conversion and storage system because of its advantages of outstanding energy density, cost-effectiveness, remarkable safety, and environmental friendliness. Nevertheless, in the air cathode of the Mg-air battery, the slow dynamics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) seriously hinders its development and application. Herein, the Prussian blue analogues (PBAs) with tunable chemical compositions and controllable morphology were used as precursors to prepare effective and stable ORR electrocatalysts for Mg-air batteries. The Fe@NC and bimetallic CoFe@NC electrocatalysts were derived from calcining FeFe-PBA and CoFe-PBA precursors at various temperatures under an argon atmosphere. Compared with an Fe@NC electrocatalyst, the bimetallic CoFe@NC electrocatalysts possess better ORR activities and stability under alkaline and neutral conditions. When the pyrolysis temperature was 600 °C, the CoFe@NC-600 displayed the best ORR activities. Meanwhile, the CoFe@NC-600 electrocatalyst exhibits the similar ORR reaction mechanism and activity compared to the Pt/C catalyst. After 5000 CV cycles in alkaline (0.1 M KOH) and neutral (3.5 wt % NaCl) electrolytes, the half-wave potentials of CoFe@NC-600 electrocatalyst merely appear at 2 and 5 mV negative deviations, respectively. Furthermore, the homemade Mg-air battery composed with CoFe@NC-600 exhibits superior discharge behaviors compared to that of the Mg-air battery assembled with Fe@NC. Abstract:Surface oxygen vacancy increases active site numbers, and multidimensional cross-linked structure improves the exposure of active sites. Thereby, they can enhance the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance of Fe-N-C catalysts effectively. Herein, Fe(NO 3 ) 3 ·9H 2 O and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were introduced into zeolitic imidazolate framework nano leaves (ZIF-L) to prepare multidimensional cross-linked Fe-N-CNTs with surface oxygen vacancies through co-pyrolysis at the high-temperature. As expected, the synthesized multidimensional cross-linked Fe-N-CNTs-900-0.2 composite rich in oxygen vacancies increased the conduction band potential and improved the reducing capacity. Thus, Fe-N-CNTs-900-0.2 possessed a better ORR electrochemical performance (half-wave potential = 0.892 V vs. RHE) that surpass the Pt/C catalysts. Moreover, the Al-air batteries containing Fe-N-CNTs-900-0.2 displayed a higher maximum power density than those of Pt/C catalysts. The electronic band structure shows that Fe-N-CNTs-900-0.2 rich in oxygen vacancy concentration has higher conduction band potential and effectively improves the activity of ORR catalysts. This work innovatively proposes that the joint work of multidimensional cross-linked structure and oxygen defects is an effective method to enhance the ORR performance and clarifies its internal reaction mechanism, which provides a new idea to design and preparer Fe-N-C catalysts.

Abstract:To commercialize the rechargeable zinc-air (Zn-air) battery, it is desirable but challenging to design highly active, low-cost, stable, and earth-rich bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to replace rare, expensive, and unstable noble-metal electrocatalysts. Herein, two MOFs are combined under electrostatic interaction and pressure by the way of Ball milling. Then, after post-processing including calcination, acid pickling, and N doping, the bimetal (Fe and Co) and N triple-doped porous carbon electrocatalyst (MIL/ZIF-4-700 °C-NH 3 ) is prepared. Noteworthily, the MIL/ZIF-4-700 °C-NH 3 has bimetallic active sites, high contents of pyridine N and graphite N, large surface area, mesoporous structure, and conductive carbon skeletons, which decide the excellent ORR performance. For ORR, the half-wave potential ( E 1/2 = 0.902 V vs. RHE) of MIL/ZIF-4-700 °C-NH 3 is 27 mV higher than that of 20 wt% Pt/C ( E 1/2 = 0.875 vs. RHE). And the catalyst has also excellent methanol tolerance and stability. The Zn-air battery with MIL/ZIF-4-700 °C-NH 3 as cathode catalyst has higher peak power density (176.5 mW cm −2 ) than that with 20 wt% Pt/C (141.8 mW cm −2 ) and 20 wt% Pt/C + RuO 2 (94.4 mW cm −2 ) as cathode catalyst. Meanwhile, the Zn-air battery with MIL/ZIF-4-700 °C-NH 3 as cathode catalyst exhibits perfect charge-discharge stability (longer than 540 h).

Abstract:Fe-N-C materials have been shown as promising non-precious electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), yet the activity as well as the durability in acidic electrolytes is still far from satisfactory. Herein, a dual metal (Fe, Ni)-nitrogen-doped carbon (FeNi-NC) was prepared by pyrolysis of Fe, Ni co-doped ZIF-8. The FeNi0.25-NC catalyst exhibits a comparable activity for the ORR to the commercial Pt/C catalyst, with the half-wave potential at 0.79 VRHE in HClO4 and 0.86 VRHE in NaOH electrolyte. Especially, FeNi0.25-NC shows excellent ORR activity in phosphorous acid electrolyte superior to the commercial Pt/C catalyst, owing to the excellent tolerance of the Fe, Ni active sites to phosphate anions. The systematic investigation manifests that Ni plays a double role in improving the ORR activity and stability of Fe-N-C. One side, Ni-N and Fe-N moieties synergistically boost the ORR especially in the high ORR overpotential region, and another side, Ni acts as a catalyst during the high temperature carbonization process to promote graphitization and increase the stability of the FeNi-N-C catalyst. It is demonstrated that the MOF-derived dual metal (Fe, Ni) -nitrogen-doped carbon catalyst (FeNi-NC) has a great potential application in both fuel cells and metal-air batteries. This work provides an effective dual-metal strategy in modulating both the activity and stability of the M-N-C catalysts for the ORR in acidic electrolytes.

Abstract:Pt/C is one of the most favorable catalysts with high catalytic activity used in the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). However, the synthesis of Pt/C with superior durability is still a significant challenge. Here, we introduced a simple technique to fabricate a Pt/N-C catalyst, having ultrasmall Pt nanocrystals encapsulated inside a nitrogen-doped carbon support, which is derived by the UiO-66-NH2 (MOF) using an impregnation technique, followed by a pyrolysis process. This Pt/N-C displays ORR activity and durability in alkaline solution with a half-wave potential of 0.90 V (vs RHE), limited diffusion current density of 5.5 mA cm–2, and only 5 mV deterioration in half-wave potential after testing 20,000 cyclic voltammetry (CV) cycles. In addition, it also shows good performance in acidic solution. In addition, Zn–air batteries (ZABs) assembled using the Pt/N-C air electrode display a high specific capacity of 825 mAh g–1, a high peak power density of 372 mW cm–2, and 208 h long cycle life. This offers an innovative approach for developing noble metal-based catalysts with unusual activity, stability, and a promising future for applications in metal–air batteries and fuel cells.

Abstract:The development of earth-abundant and cost-effective electro-catalysts at the air cathodes for both oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (ORR and OER) with sluggish kinetics are central to the overall performance of rechargeable metal-air batteries, remaining an issue that is gaining increasing interest in recent years. Herein, we report a nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon supported clustered CoOx composite catalyst (CoOx/NMC) synthesized from the anchored atomically dispersed CoOOH species by an efficient two-step nucleation method. Due to the synergistic and size effects, CoOx/NMC exhibits an enhanced bifunctional electrocatalytic performance in alkaline media than the state of the art commercial Pt/C catalyst for ORR and the OER catalyst (Ir/C). More importantly, the advanced CoOx/NMC catalyst enables recharge Zn-air batteries (ZABs) to achieve long-term cycling performance over 400 h by galvanostatic charge-discharge at current density of 10 mA cm(-2) with high efficiency, suggesting a very promising alternative to the conventional Pt/C and Ir/C catalysts for an air cathode.
