Abstract:A graphene quantum dots (GQDs)–chitosan (CS) composite film was prepared via successive electrodeposition of GQDs and CS on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The strong interactions between GQDs and CS resulted in the formation of a regular and uniform film, which can be applied in the electrochemical chiral recognition of tryptophan (Trp) enantiomers. CS in the composite film provides a chiral microenvironment, meanwhile, GQDs can amplify the electrochemical signals and improve the recognition efficiency. Due to the synergetic effect of GQDs and CS, chiral recognition of Trp enantiomers is achieved successfully. Compared with previous reports utilizing GQDs in photoluminescent research, this work opens a new avenue for broadening the applications of GQDs in the electrochemically chiral sensors.

Abstract:Chirality is a fundamental phenomenon of nature, and the enantioselective recognition of amino acids isomers is especially important for life science. In this study, chiroptical system based on chiral assembly graphene quantum dots (GQDs) was developed for visual testing of D-phenylalanine (D-Phe). Here, GQDs were used as the fluorescent element, and chiral functional moieties of 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol-functionalized chiral ( +)-diacetyl-L-tartaric anhydride (TPTA) were used as the chiral recognition elements. Based on the formed chiral microenvironment, the fluorescence intensity of TPTA-assembled GQDs had a good linear relationship with D-Phe in the concentration range of 0.1–5 μM, and the detection limit was 0.023 μM. According to the variation in luminance of TPTA-assembled GQDs, visual testing to D-Phe was realized using a smartphone-assisted chiroptical system with a detection limit of 0.050 μM. The spiked recoveries of both chiroptical sensing methods based on TPTA-assembled GQDs from the food matrix ranged from 86.20 to 110.0%. Furthermore, TPTA-assembled GQDs were successfully applied to intracellular chiroptical imaging in response to D-Phe in vitro. The developed chiral nanomaterial TPTA-assembled GQDs with excellent photochemical stability, optical properties, and bioimaging capabilities provide a promising technique for the visual detection of amino acid isomers in the field of smart devices.

Abstract:Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) were prepared by pyrolysis of citric acid, and then incorporated into β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) via H-bonds between the oxygen-containing groups on GQDs and the hydroxyl groups on β-CD. The nanocomposites of GQDs and β-CD (GQDs/β-CD) were negatively charged due to the ionization of carboxyl groups of GQDs, and therefore they could be effectively electrodeposited onto a glassy carbon electrode (GCE). The electrodeposited GQDs/β-CD were optically active due to the introduction of β-CDs with well-defined hydrophobic central cavities, and it was employed as an electrochemical chiral interface for enantiorecognition of tryptophan (Trp) isomers.

Abstract:In this work, manganese(II)-doped zinc/germanium oxide nanoparticles (Mn@ZGNPs) have been hydrothermally synthesized to equip with appealing time-resolved luminescence (TRL). Interestingly, we reveal that they can be readily quenched ("turn off") via a facile surface coating with bioinspired polydopamine (PDA) polymerized from dopamine (DA), resulting from PDA-triggered TRL resonance energy transfer (TRL-RET). By integrated with the thiol-induced inhibition of PDA formation, an ingenious inorganic-organic hybrid tongue-mimic sensor array is thus unveiled for noninvasive pattern recognition of thiols in biofluids in a TRL-RET-reversed "turn on" format toward healthcare monitoring. The sensing principle is based on the new finding that there are differential inhibitions from thiols against the polymerization of DA with various concentrations. Furthermore, density function theory (DFT) studies excellently prove our sensing principle and experimental results, reinforcing the power of the presented system. More importantly, chiral recognition of varied concentrations and mixtures of cysteine enantiomers using our platform are also been demonstrated, promising its practical usage. This is a novel concept of inorganic-organic hybrid-based pattern and chiral recognition platform for TRL background-free sensing and would sprout more novel relevant strategies toward broader applications.

Abstract:Abstract Chirality exists everywhere in nature, so chiral recognition is also an extremely important field. This paper explores the recognition of amino acid configuration by an electrochemical chiral sensing platform constructed with carbon nanomaterials (carbon quantum dots (CQDs) as the substrate material) combined with chiral selectors (chitosan (CS)). CQDs/CS, which is bonded by intermolecular force, and CQDs‐CS, which is formed by covalent grafting through amidation, are selected as electrochemical chiral recognition materials, and a series of characterization methods are carried out to indicate the successful preparation of the materials, and then attached to the glass carbon electrode (GCE), forming a chiral sensing platform for amino acid enantiomers. The differential voltammetry (DPV) method was used to convert the chemical signal into electrical signal. The results showed that compared with CQDs/CS, CQDs‐CS had better enantiomer resolution to tryptophan (Trp), and the peak current ratio (I L /I D ) was 2.28.

Abstract:The effective synthesis of graphene oxide (GO) modified with chitosan (CS) via covalent bond exhibited the properties of a wide surface area and high chiral selectivity. The successful synthesis of composites was characterized by the FTIR, XPS and electrochemical methods. Then a novel chiral electrochemical sensor based on chitosan covalently binding with the graphene (RGO/CS) was fabricated for discrimination of tyrosine (Tyr) enantiomers. The results showed that the chiral selector CS preferably combined with D-Tyr rather than L-Tyr, which was attributed to the favorability of host–guest interactions between CS and Tyr enantiomers. In comparison, recognition efficiency was significantly improved after CS was grafted onto RGO, which might be attributed to the formation of intermolecular forces between Tyr enantiomers and CS. Furthermore, the structure of CS could play an important role in enantioselective discrimination. The as-synthesized material was successfully exploited for the recognition of Tyrosine enantiomers, indicating that the developed sensor has wide application prospects.

Abstract:Nanocomposites of chitosan (CS) and graphene quantum dots (GQDs) were prepared via a simple and reliable approach on the basis of electrostatic attraction and H-bondings between CS and GQDs. The nanocomposites of CS and GQDs (CS-GQDs) were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (BT-IR), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), exhibiting a well-dispersed status of the GQDs nanofillers in the CS matrix. The CS-GQDs modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE) combined with in situ plated Bi film was used as the sensing platform for sensitive and simultaneous determination of Zn2+, Cd2+ and Pb2+ for the first time, opening a new avenue to monitor trace heavy metal ions precisely and rapidly. Abstract:Graphene quantum dot-covalently appended terpyridine, GQDs-tpy, was synthesized and characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, FTIR spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. GQDs-tpy was found to act as multifunctional chemosensors: a highly selective colorimetric chemosensor for Fe2+ as evidenced by an obvious color change from colorless to pink, and a typical fluorescence enhanced probe for Zn2+ over 13 metal cations even in practical water samples. Moreover, two-input XOR, INHIBIT and IMPICATION logic gates as well as four-input OR and NOR logic gates were constructed according to the characteristic responses of GQDs-tpy to a sequence of cations.

Abstract:Molecular self-assemblies offer a promising strategy for the synthesis of advanced materials for the construction of novel chiral sensing systems, and latest innovations on such self-assemblies are focused on simple building blocks in biology such as nucleic acids, lipids, and peptides. Herein, the self-assemblies of diphenylalanine (FF) and oxalic acid (OA) were prepared as the chiral sensing device for the recognition of tryptophan (Trp) isomers. Interestingly, the self-assemblies composed of OA and FF with different charging states (neutral, positively charged, and negatively charged) exhibited quite different morphologies, resulting in significantly different chiral recognition ability toward the Trp isomers. Also, in this work, the temperature sensitivity and chiral selectivity of the proposed FF-OA self-assemblies were also studied. From a practical point of view, the FF-OA self-assemblies were finally applied for the determination of precise levels of d-Trp in the racemic mixture of Trp isomers.
Graphene quantum dot functionalized by chitosan as an electrically conductive nano-material toward low potential detection: a new platform for interface science

Abstract:Graphene quantum dot (GQD) with tunable sizes, (2–5 nm) especially displays unique optical and electrical properties due to the quantum confinement effect. Experiments have revealed that the band gap and HOMO/LUMO energy levels of GQDs can be independently controlled by either the lateral size or chemical functionalization. In the present work, a simple and controllable sequent electrodeposition method for the functionalization of graphene quantum dots with chitosan and preparation of a thin film on a glassy carbon electrode surface was proposed and further used for the construction of an electrochemical detector. This novel interface was constructed by two-step electrochemical deposition in solution containing graphene quantum dots and chitosan. This deposited interface possessed excellent stability by the characterization of cyclic voltammetry and wave voltammetry in phosphate buffer with pH 7.4. As the nanostructured sensing film provides plenty of active sites for the direct oxidation of vitamin C, the prepared sensor exhibited excellent electrochemical, catalytical and analytical performance at the pH 7.4. The kinetics of charge transfer and mass transport processes across the nanocomposite/solution interface were studied. The modified electrode showed an efficient electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of vitamin C through a surface mediated electron transfer. The catalytic rate constant and the vitamin C diffusion coefficient were reported.

Abstract:As the highest form of molecular recognition, the chiral molecular recognition is the most difficult measurements. Herein, a disposable dual-signal enantioselective platform was fabricated based on stereoscopic porous chiral carbon nanotubes hydrogel modified screen printed electrode. This kind of chiral hydrogel was prepared by a simple heating method with l - cysteine and chiral single-walled carbon nanotubes of chirality (6,5 ), and its dispersion and morphology were characterized by several techniques including scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The stereogenic chiral interface was successfully employed to discriminate mandelic acid enantiomers via both oxidation peak intensity and peak potential value of cyclic voltammetry. The chiral recognition mechanism was discussed specifically, which resulted from the formation of an efficient three-dimensional chiral nanospace. The inherent chirality of chiral carbon nanotubes hydrogel, together with their orderly spatial arrangement, can significantly improve the efficiency of chiral recognition compared with traditional electrochemical chiral sensors. As a novel chiral sensing interface, such chiral carbon nanotubes hydrogel was simple to prepare, fast to operate, with good sensitivity and excellent stability for the construction of efficient and practical electrochemical chiral sensors. We presented a new strategy to fabricate enantioselective electrochemical sensor based on stereogenic porous chiral carbon nanotubes hydrogel. • A strategy to fabricate chiral carbon nanotubes hydrogel-based electrochemical chiral sensor was presented. • The practicability of the sensor was validated by discriminating mandelic acid enantiomers. • Such chiral hydrogel has potential application in constructing simpler and more reliable chiral electrochemical sensors.

Abstract:We demonstrate, for the first time, an electrochemical sensor that provides antipodal signals upon application of square wave voltammetry (SWV), for enantioselective recognition of 3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine based on chiral single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) in the presence of sulphuric acid. Interestingly, the enantioselectivity was not observed using the common method of cyclic voltammetry (CV) but the SWV peak currents of enantiomers were found to be quite different and hence the enantiomers could be successfully recognized. Moreover, the antipodal signals provided by two SWV scan modes offer the possibility for results to be confirmed mutually, showing a great practical value and analytical application prospects.

Abstract:Chirality is an essential natural attribute of organisms. Chiral molecules exhibit differences in biochemical processes, pharmacodynamics, and toxicological properties, and their enantioselective recognition plays an important role in explaining life science processes and guiding drug design. Herein, we developed an ultra-sensitive enantiomer recognition platform based on an extended-gate metal-oxide semiconductor field-effect-transistor (Nafion–GO@BSA–EG-MOSFET) that achieved effective chiral resolution of ultra-sensitive Lysine (Lys) and α-Methylbenzylamine (α-Met) enantiodiscrimination at the femtomole level. Bovine serum albumin (BSA) was immobilized on the surface of graphene oxide (GO) through amide bond coupling to prepare the GO@BSA complex. GO@BSA was drop-cast on deposited Au surfaces with a Nafion solution to afford the extended-gate sensing unit. Effective recognition of chiral enantiomers of mandelic acid (MA), tartaric acid (TA), tryptophan (Trp), Lys and α-Met was realized. Moreover, the introduction of GO reduced non-specific adsorption, and the chiral resolution concentration of α-Met reached the level of picomole in a 5-fold diluted fetal bovine serum (FBS). Finally, the chiral recognition mechanism of the as-fabricated sensor was proposed.

Chiral UiO-MOFs based QCM sensors for enantioselective discrimination of hazardous biomolecule

Abstract:the vital role of Cysteine (Cys) in biological processes and the hazardous effect of its D-enantiomer, discriminating Cys enantiomers without auxiliary enzyme is highly wanted. In this work, a pair of UiO-MOF enantiomers (UiO-tart) have been fabricated through post-modification, which could be further fabricated into enantiomeric sensing devices (UiO-tart@Au). By employing the Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) technology, gravimetric discrimination of Cys enantiomers could be achieved. UiO-tart@Au is highly enantioselective, and the afforded enantioselective factor (5.97 +/- 0.54) represents the best performance reported ever. In the fabricated device, MOF layer acts as the chiral selector for specific Cys enantiomer, and the reaction between the captured Cys enantiomer and Au results in the mass growth of the system. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) gives an e.e. value of 71.6 +/- 3.8%, substantially confirming the chiral-selector role of UiO-tart. DFT calculations indicate that enantiomeric H-bonding effect and greater reaction enthalpy should be the reason. To the best of our knowledge, this work represents the first example of chiral tartaric acid derived MOF sensors for enantioselective discrimination of Cys, suggesting a promising potential of developing chiral MOFs based devices for enhanced enantioselective application.
Terahertz SWNT-based fluidic chip for sensing enantioselectivity

Abstract:Enantioselectivity sensing is crucial in biological systems due to the impact of the selective behaviors of chiral compounds on their targets. Conventional approaches for detecting enantioselectivity are restricted by the presence of high phonon energy, complex device manufacturing processes, low sensitivity, and the need for large sample sizes. Here, we propose a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT)-based fluidic chip that uses terahertz (THz) optical rotatory dispersion (ORD) spectroscopy to detect tartaric acids with high selectivity in very small amounts of liquid. The chip is composed of tailored U-shaped metasurfaces that show significant amplification of the near-field around the typical peaks of tartaric acids in the ORD spectrum. Additionally, it includes subwavelength gratings made of SWNTs, allowing for accurate detection of polarization angles. The limit of detection (LOD) for D-tartaric acid and L-tartaric acid are 17.9 mg/L and 11.0 mg/L, respectively. The sensitivities are superior to those of UV ORD or CD spectrometers. Furthermore, the presence of tartaric acid in wine is effectively identified, with a LOD of 25.60 mg/L. This technological development provides a significant improvement in chiral analysis by allowing for quick, highly sensitive, and precise detection of enantiomers.

Abstract:Due to low optical activity and structural simplicity, synchronous chiral discrimination and identification of aliphatic amino acids (AAs) are still challenging yet demanding. Herein, we developed a novel surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS)-based chiral discrimination-sensing platform for aliphatic AAs, in which l- and d-enantiomers are able to discriminately bind with quinine to generate distinct differences in the SERS vibrational modes. Meanwhile, the plasmonic sub-nanometer gaps supported by the rigid quinine enable the maximization of SERS signal enhancement to reveal feeble signals, allowing for simultaneously acquiring the structural specificity and enantioselectivity of aliphatic amino acid enantiomers in a single SERS spectrum. Different kinds of chiral aliphatic AAs were successfully identified by using this sensing platform, demonstrating its potential and practicality in recognizing chiral aliphatic molecules.

Abstract:Stereoselective recognition of amino acids is extremely important due to its high chirality-dependent interactions and physiological activities in life activities. We herein report a novel functionalized chiral fluorescent nanosensor prepared from surface modification of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) with pyroglutamic acid derivatives, which could serve as a chiral recognition module for fluorescence detection of chiral molecules. The sensor exhibited a unique stereoselective fluorescence response to histidine (His), glutamate (Glu), and dihydroxyphenylalanine (Dopa) and had preferable response performance to l-enantiomers. The enantiomeric fluorescence difference ratios of His, Glu, and Dopa enantiomers were 3.90, 3.40, and 2.49, respectively. The mechanism for the enantiomeric fluorescence recognition was systematically studied through a fluorescence spectrum, fluorescence life, and density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Presumably, the different hydrogen bonding capacity of the chiral recognition module with two enantiomers mainly contributed to the difference in fluorescence signals. Abstract:Chiral materials have drawn the widespread attention for their its chiral recognition ability. The design and synthesis of chiral material are of importance owing to the unpredictability in controlling chirality during the synthesis process. To circumvent problems, a chiral MOF (D-His-ZIF-8) was synthesized by ligand exchange of 2-methylimidazole (Hmim) on ZIF-8 by D-histidine (D-His), which can be treated as chiral host to distinguish amino acid enantiomers. The obtained D-His-ZIF-8 can provide chiral nanochannels for amino acid guests. Meanwhile, polynary transition-metal ion (Co2+ and Fe3+) coordinating with polydopamine (PDA) wrapped on the surface of D-His-ZIF-8 can increase the active sites. The electrochemical chiral recognition behavior showed that D-His-ZIF-8@CoFe-PDA exhibited good recognition of the tryptophan enantiomer (L/D-Trp) (working potential of -0.2 V vs. Hg/HgCl2). The LOD and LOQ of L-Trp were 0.066 mM and 0.22 mM, respectively, while the LOD and LOQ of D-Trp were 0.15 mM and 0.50 mM, respectively. Finally, the usefulness of D-His-ZIF-8@CoFe-PDA/GCE was evaluated with a recovery of 94.4-103%. The analysis of real samples shows that D-His-ZIF-8@CoFe-PDA/GCE is a feasible sensing platform for the detection of L-Trp and D-Trp.
Chiral voltammetric sensor for tryptophan enantiomers by using a self-assembled multiwalled carbon nanotubes/polyaniline/sodium alginate composite

Abstract:Due to the crucial role of amino acids in life sciences and pharmaceutics, identification of optical amino acid molecules is of great significance. In this study, the two materials (CNT and PANI) were combined together to obtain the magnification of electrochemical signal by substrate material (CNT/PANI). Then a self-assembled multiwalled carbon nanotubes/polyaniline/sodium alginate (CNT/PANI/SA) nanocomposite with chiral sites and conductive material was synthesized as the electrochemical sensing interface. Next, a novel electrochemical sensing interface was fabricated via modifying the as-prepared chiral material on a polished glassy carbon electrode (CNT/PANI/SA/GCE) for precisely, efficiently, and rapidly differentiation of tryptophan (Trp) enantiomers. It was observed that CNT/PANI/SA/GCE showed desirable stereoselective recognition effect in the variety of signal strength to peak current (Ip) to the different optical activity of Trp enantiomers. In the case of optimal conditions, the peak current ratio in the solution of l-Trp and d-Trp (ID /IL ) was observed to be 2.1 at CNT/PANI/SA/GCE by differential pulse voltammogram (DPV). UV-visible spectroscopy further showed that CNT/PANI/SA had a greater binding energy to l-Trp. Also different factors affecting the enantioselectivity of CNT/PANI/SA/GCE, such as the incubation time, pH, and dropcoating volume of CNT/PANI/SA were optimized. Moreover, the proposed CNT/PANI/SA/GCE showed excellent specific stereoselectivity and anti-interference ability. Besides, the proposed chiral sensing platform can be effectively applied in real samples to detect Trp enantiomers sensitively. This work inspires us a new path for the preparation of substrate material with excellent electrical conductivity, as well as extend its application potential in chiral recognition.
