Abstract:Abstract Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents (CAs) are widely used to manipulate the image contrast for enhanced imaging efficiency and accuracy. Novel imaging agents with better performance and desired functions are of great value to meeting diverse practical requirements. Lanthanide nanoparticles (Ln NPs) integrating unique electronic configurations of Ln ions and nanometric-size effect have been recognized as promising candidates for MRI contrast enhancement. Here in this chapter, we focus on the evolution of Ln NPs in the past decade and pay particular attention to the design strategy of novel CAs toward specific purposes. We summarize the recent advances in the design and demonstration of various CAs and the influence of composition, size, shape, and surface status on the relaxometric properties of Ln NPs are discussed based on relaxation mechanism. In addition, an overview on the multifunctional applications of Ln NPs is also presented. We also raise some prospects with the hope of providing some insights into the future development of Ln NPs.
