Abstract:A new luminescent lanthanide metal-organic framework was synthesized under hydrothermal conditions by introducing the tetracarboxylic acid ligand (H(4)bptc) as a chromophore to sensitize the luminescence of the Tb3+ ion. Interestingly, despite the achiral nature of H(4)bptc, the resulting framework exhibited rare chiral helical channels. The luminescence studies revealed that this material showed a highly selective fluorescence quenching response to Fe3+ ions in liquid suspension, which can be conveniently observed by the naked eye under UV light. Thus, this material can be potentially used as a chemosensor for sensing Fe3+ ions and its selective luminescence quenching response can be explained in terms of the competitive absorption mechanism.

Abstract:Fluorescence sensing is a simple, intuitive, and convenient detection method, but it also has disadvantages, such as poor photothermal stability and detection state limitations. Lanthanide organic/inorganic hybrid materials (LHMs) possess exceptional structural stability and tunability and are important candidates for chemosensory materials. LHMs contain versatile chemical reaction building blocks (linkers or ligands), and the different inorganic matrices that can be used provide an opportunity to develop and extend their unique properties.In this review, recent research progress on the use of LHMs for chemical sensing is described. We summarize four general strategies for LHMs synthesis. Moreover, by utilizing these strategies, we prepared an LHMs fluorescent probe that was used to realize the chemical sensing of different types of cations (Fe3+ and Cu2+), molecules (dipicolinic acid (DPA), glutathione, water and ascorbic acid (AA)), and pollutants (organic solvents and amines), as well as pH and temperature sensing. Additionally, the detection status of LHMs can be changed according to the characteristics of the inorganic matrix, such as whether a film or gel is used for detection, thereby overcoming the limitations related to the general detection state.

Abstract:Three multifunctional fluorescent Metal-Organic Framework (MOF) sensors are synthesized based on N, N'-bis(3, 5-dicarboxyphenyl)isophthalic diimide (H 4 BDCPPI) with Zn, Cu, and Cd ions. Structural analysis shows that although using the same organic conjugated aromatic imide tetracarboxylic acids ligand, their corresponding structures are different. Based on luminescence characteristics of the organic components, they exhibit good luminescent properties. They can sensitively detect nitro aromatic compounds (p-nitrophenol (PNP), 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP) and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP)) and small drug molecules (colchicine and balsalazide disodium) with low limit of detection. The complex 1 is more sensitive for detection of TNP, compared to the other complexes. The mechanism of fluorescence sensing is proposed in detail based on analyses of PXRD, fluorescence lifetimes, and UV–vis spectra. This study explores the potential of MOFs based on H 4 BDCPPI in the field of fluorescence sensing for the first time, laying the theoretical foundation for application of complexes with conjugated aromatic imide tetracarboxylic acids.

Abstract:A novel three-dimensional metal organic framework, Pb3O2L(1)(H2L = 4-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl) phenol), with a unique 3D network structure exhibits excellent luminescence and good stability in water and other organic solvents. 1 can act as a promising dual functional sensor for the detection and recognition of nitroaromatic explosives (NACs) and Fe3+ ions via fluorescence quenching with high selectivity and sensitivity in an aqueous phase. Importantly, 1 as a fluorescent sensor of Fe3+ can be simply and quickly regenerated, which represents a rare example of a reported luminescent sensor of Fe3+ ions. Furthermore, the visible colour changes in the detection process make them easy to distinguish by the naked eyes, and luminescent test plates broaden its potential application in detection of Fe3+ ions. Experimental and theoretical calculations indicate that the luminescence quenching can be attributed to an electron and resonance energy transfer between the MOF and analytes. The present study contributes to the development of MOF materials research, specifically in their application as biological and environmental fluorescent sensors.

Abstract:As one of the most promising category of functional materials, luminescent metal–organic frameworks ( LMOFs ) have been widely investigated as fluorescence chemical sensors which can offer a reliable diagnostic tools in biomedical research. Herein, a luminescent Cd-MOF [Cd 2 (L) 2 (H 2 O)] n ( Cd-MOF ) (H 2 L = 3-(3-carboxylphenyl) isonicotinic acid), was synthesized by and characterized in detail. Single-crystal structure determination reveals that Cd-MOF crystalizes in the monoclinic crystal system with C 2/c space group. Experimental results show that Cd-MOF is a highly selective and sensitive luminescent sensor for rapidly detecting acetone, L-Tryptophane (L-Trp) and L- Aspartic acid (L-Asp) in water. It can significantly test acetone in common solvents, selectively identify L-Trp and L-Asp in 12 amino acid aqueous solutions, and enhance the fluorescence signal of Tryptophan and quench L-Asp with the detection limit of 17.6 μM and 68.8 μM respectively. However, upon the interaction with electron rich amino acid (L-Trp), the Cd-MOF shows the selective "Turn-On" behaviour, which may also be supported by the DFT studies.

Abstract:Based on the 5-(3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy) isophthalic acid (H4dppa) ligand, two lanthanide metal -organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) were designed and synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis: {(dima)[Dy(dppa)(H2O)2] center dot 2.5H2O}n (Dy - MOF) and {(dima) [Eu(dppa) (H2O)2] center dot 1.5H2O}n (Eu - MOF) (dima=dimethylamine cation). The structures were characterized by elemental analysis, infrared spectroscopy, single -crystal X-ray diffraction, etc. Dy-MOF and EuMOF are hetero-isomorphic 2D network structures, and adjacent 2D networks further form 3D supramolecular network structures through hydrogen bonding. Fluorescence analysis shows that Dy-MOF and Eu-MOF have excellent fluorescence properties at room temperature, and Dy-MOF has excellent fluorescence sensing properties, which can efficiently and high -sensitively detect a variety of pollutants in water: aniline (ANI), nitrobenzene (NB), tetracycline (TC), pyrimethanil (PTH), and tryptophan (Trp). The fluorescence quenching mechanism of Dy-MOF in detecting pollutants was also investigated. CCDC: 2284537, Dy-MOF; 2067689, Eu-MOF.
Dual-Emitting Mixed-Lanthanide Metal-Organic Framework for Ratiometric and Quantitative Visual Detection of 2,6-Pyridine Dicarboxylic Acid.

Abstract:The detection of the major biomarker of Bacillus anthracis, 2,6-dipicolinic acid (DPA), has attracted great interest in recent years. In this work, mixed-lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (M'LnMOFs), TbxEu1-x-cppa (cppa = 5-(5-carboxypyridin-3-yl)isophthalic acid), with different Tb/Eu ratios, were solvothermally synthesized. The results reveal that ratiometric fluorescent probe [Tb0.533Eu0.467-(Hcppa)1.5(H2O)(DMF)]·3H2O is water and acid-base stable and exhibits excellent sensitivity (LOD = 2.286 μM), high selectivity, and fast response (<2 min) for the detection of DPA. Due to the blocked energy transfer from Tb3+ to Eu3+ and the inner filter effect upon the addition of DPA, the fluorescent probe shows a distinct color change from orange-red to green. Furthermore, the visual detection of DPA was realized by identifying the RGB values of MOF-based agarose hydrogel films via a smartphone, highlighting the practical application of the fluorescent probe for DPA detection under aqueous solution conditions.

Abstract:A novel two-dimensional (2D) cadmium-based metal-organic framework [Cd-2(HDDB)(bimpy)(NMP)(H2O)]center dot 3H(2)O (1) (H5DDB = 3,5-di(2',4'-dicarboxylphenyl)benozoic acid and bimpy = 3,5-bis(1-imidazolyl)pyridine) has been constructed by solvothermal method, which exhibits good water stability, pH stability and excellent photoluminescence properties. Complex 1 reveals a fluorescence turn-off behaviour towards nitrofuran/nitroimidazole antibiotics and DCN pesticide due to PET (photoinduced electron transfer) and FRET (fluorescence resonance energy transfer). Interestingly, complex 1 can be designed as an "on-off-on" fluorescence probe to detect Fe3+ ion and ascorbic acid (AA). The fluorescence of complex 1 can be quenched by Fe3+ ion to form a Fe3+@1 hybrid system, which can be ascribed to the FRET process and the week interaction between Fe3+ and 1. Then, after gradually adding AA into Fe3+ @1 system, the fluorescence intensity of Fe3+@1 fluorescence-silent system was recovered (turn on). The possible fluorescence turn-on mechanism is the elimination of FRET process between Fe3+ and complex 1. This work represents the first example of recognition of nitrofuran/nitroimidazole antibiotics, DCN pesticide, Fe3+ ion and AA based on a MOF material in aqueous solution. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The precise and real-time monitoring of localized pH changes is of great importance in many engineering and environmental fields, especially for monitoring small pH changes in biological environments and living cells. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with their nanoscale processability show very promising applications in bioimaging and biomonitoring, but the fabrication of nanoscale MOFs is still a challenge. In this study, we synthesized a nanoscale mixed-lanthanide metal-organic framework by a microemulsion method. The morphology and size of the NMOF can be simply adjusted by the addition of different amounts of the CTAB surfactant. This NMOF exhibits significant pH-dependent luminescence emission, which can act as a self-referenced pH sensor based on two emissions of Tb3+ at 545 nm and Eu3+ at 618 nm in the pH range from 3.00 to 7.00. The MTT assay and optical microscopy assay demonstrate the low cytotoxicity and good biocompatibility of the nanosensor.

Abstract:A Co-based mixed-ligand metal-organic framework (MOF), ZJU-109, is reported by utilizing 6-(4-pyridyl)-terephthalic acid (H2pta) and 4,4'-bis(imidazolyl)biphenyl (4,4'-bimbp) as double linkers. By tuning the d-PET process between ligands 4,4'-bimbp and H2pta, a fluorescent turn-on sensor for Fe3+ with a detection limit as low as 0.053 μM has been demonstrated.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials have attracted tremendous interest as fluorescence quenchers of dye-labeled biomolecules for application in biosensing. Metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets, as a new type of 2D material, have rarely been studied as bioanalytical platforms. Herein, we synthesize a series of ultrathin lanthanide-based MOF (MOF-Ln) nanosheets as a dye-labeled aptamer platform. The fluorescence quenching or recovery on the MOF-Ln nanosheets is determined by the charge properties (positive or negative) of the labeled fluorophores. The negatively charged fluorophores experience a fluorescence ‘turn-down followed by turn-down’ process, whereas the positively charged fluorophores experience a fluorescence ‘turn-down followed by turn-up’ process. The interesting fluorescence quenching properties of the MOF-Ln nanosheets make them an excellent two-color sensing platform for the intracellular detection of biomolecules.
Multifunctional Lanthanide Metal-Organic Frameworks Are Used for Fluorescence Sensing of Bi3+, HPO42-, Flu, and PNBA and Application

Abstract:Using a nitrogen-containing tricarboxylic acid ligand (imidazole-1-yl) benzene-2,4,6-tricarboxylic acid (H3ttc) and lanthanide metal elements (Dy, Eu, Nd, and Gd), four lanthanide metal organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) with the same structure, namely, {[Dy2 (Httc)3]·1.5DMF}n(1), {[Eu2 (Httc)3]·1.5DMF}n(2), {[Nd2 (Httc)3]·1.5DMF}n(3), and {[Gd2 (Httc)3]·1.5DMF}n(4), were synthesized under solvothermal conditions. The characterization analysis showed that the four isomorphic Ln-MOFs were trigonal crystals of the R3̅c space group, with good phase purity and thermal stability. Fluorescence analysis showed that complex 1 can be an excellent fluorescence sensor for Bi3+, HPO42-, and fluridine (Flu), while complex 2 can be an excellent fluorescence sensor for p-nitrobenzoic acid (PNBA). And their sensing mechanisms were discussed in detail. The fluorescent test paper and fluorescent seal were prepared by using the excellent luminescence properties of 1 and 2, and the pesticide on the surface of cherry tomato was detected. The applicability of these MOFs as fluorescence sensors was proved. Therefore, Ln-MOFs are expected to have unpredictable application prospects in the field of environmental detection.
Dye-functionalized metal-organic frameworks with the uniform dispersion of MnO2 nanosheets for visualized fluorescence detection of alanine aminotransferase

Abstract:The wide applications of metal-organic framework (MOF) luminescent materials in the field of optics have attracted the general attention of researchers. Therefore, the development of simple and multifunctional MOF light-emitting platforms have become a research hotspot. The composites (MnO2@ZIF-8-luminol) were prepared by an in situ synthesis method and room-temperature covalent reaction. The composites and o-phenylenediamine (OPD) constitute a dual emission sensor for detecting alanine aminotransferase (ALT). OPD can be oxidized by MnO2 to 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP) with yellow fluorescence emission, which inhibits the blue emission of luminol through fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). The presence of tiopronin (TP) will destroy the FRET process, extinguishing the yellow fluorescence emission and restoring the blue fluorescence emission. The special effect between ALT and TP will further reverse the changes in the two fluorescent signals. Moreover, in the detection process, when the blue and yellow fluorescence energies in the system are within a certain range, a new white light emission will be generated, which causes the sensing of ALT to present ternary visualization. In addition, a high-security anti-counterfeiting platform is constructed by using the prepared materials and agarose hydrogels. The anti-counterfeiting platform can encrypt information on demand according to the luminous characteristics of different materials. This study not only provides a typical case of ternary visualization sensing by MOF-based materials but also develops a possible method for the construction of a MOF-based hydrogel anti-counterfeiting platform.

Abstract:Formic acid is a common chemical raw material, the effective detection of which is of importance to food safety and environmental quality. In this work, the lanthanide functionalized dual-emission metal-organic framework (TH25) was prepared as a ratiometric fluorescent sensor for formic acid. This ratiometric sensor has a good detection performance with high selectivity, sensitivity, and reproducibility. Together with a low limit of detection of 2.1 ppm, these characters promise the ability to sense at low levels as well as a practical detection ability. This work provides ideas for the design and synthesis of effective chemical sensors for organic acids.

Abstract:From the perspective of efficient and economical utilization of materials, it is very meaningful to achieve multifunctional performance in its assembly process, and this is also the future development trend of metal–organic framework (MOF) materials. As an important type of intermolecular interaction, hydrogen bonding is widely used in supramolecular self-assembly, molecular recognition, and catalytic organic reactions. Following the hydrogen bond functionalization construction strategy, we introduced urea–hydrogen bonding sites into the ligands and then introduced functionalized ligands into the MOF frameworks, which efficiently realized the construction of multifunctional lanthanide MOFs. Structural analysis indicated that the MOF consists of 2D layers with parallelogram holes and stacking into 3D frameworks through the N–H···O hydrogen bonding interactions. Interestingly, a functionalization ligand in the MOF frameworks plays three different roles: support, recognition, and both support and recognition. Thanks to the pores rich in urea sites and the excellent luminescent properties of lanthanide ions, the MOF can be used as a regenerable luminescent sensor for the efficient detection of picric acid. Moreover, two fluorescent dyes, such as perylene and fluorescein, can be encapsulated into the functionalized pores and show excellent dual-emitting performance, which proved that we have successfully adjusted the luminescent properties of Ln-MOF by introducing guest luminescent molecules. Abstract:A strategy utilizing mixed-lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for self-referencing and colorimetric luminescent pH sensing has been developed. The mixed-lanthanide MOFs Eu(x)Tb(1-x)Hdpda (x=0.097, 0.205, 0.303, H(4)dpda=4-(3,5-dicarboxyphenyl)pyridine-2,6-dicarboxylic acid) exhibit excellent stability in phosphate buffer solution with pH values varying from 3.90 to 7.50. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations indicate that the deprotonation of uncoordinated carboxyl groups in ligands results in the elevation of the triplet excited state (T-1) energy level of H(4)dpda, thus increasing the energy transfer probability from the T-1 to D-5(4) level of Tb3+. As a result, the emission intensity of Tb3+ in Eu(x)Tb(1-x)Hdpda increases gradually while that of Eu3+ is almost not changed with the pH varying from 3.90 to 7.50. The intensity ratios of Eu3+ to Tb3+ can be correlated to the pH value, suggesting they are promising self-referencing luminescent pH sensors. Furthermore, the significant pH-dependent emission color change enables them to act as a luminescent colorimetric pH sensor for in situ and real-time pH imaging. Because the energy transfer between the ligand and lanthanide ion can be easily tuned by selecting an appropriate ligand to further optimize the pH response range and sensitivity, such a strategy opens a new perspective for the development of self-referencing luminescent pH sensors.
