Abstract:The phase behavior of cyclic rod-coil diblock copolymer melts is investigated by the dissipative particle dynamics simulation. In order to understand the effect of chain topological architecture better, we also study the linear rod-coil system. The comparison of the calculated phase diagrams between the two rod-coil copolymers reveals that the order-disorder transition point (χN)ODT for cyclic rod-coil diblock copolymers is always higher than that of equivalent linear rod-coil diblocks. In addition, the phase diagram for cyclic system is more “symmetrical,” due to the topological constraint. Moreover, there are significant differences in the self-assembled overall morphologies and the local molecular arrangements. For example, frod = 0.5, both lamellar structures are formed while rod packing is different greatly in cyclic and linear cases. The lamellae with rods arranged coplanarly into bilayers occurs in cyclic rod-coil diblocks, while the lamellar structure with rods arranged end by end into interdigitated bilayers appears in linear counterpart. In both the lamellar phases, the domain size ratio of cyclic to linear diblocks is ranged from 0.63 to 0.70. This is attributed to that the cyclic architecture with the additional junction increases the contacts between incompatible blocks and prevents the coil chains from expanding as much as the linear cases. As frod = 0.7, the hexagonally packed cylinder is observed for cyclic rod-coil diblocks, while liquid-crystalline smectic A lamellar phase is formed in linear system. As a result, the cyclization of a linear rod-coil block copolymer can induce remarkable differences in the self-assembly behavior and also diversify its physical properties and applications greatly.

Abstract:A series of novel rod-coil diblock copolymers on the basis of mesogen-jacketed liquid-crystalline polymer were successfully prepared by atom transfer radical polymerization from the flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) macroinitiator. The hybrid diblock copolymers, poly{2,5-bis[(4-methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene}-block-polydimethylsiloxane, had number-average molecular weights (M.'s) ranging from 9500 to 30,900 and relatively narrow polydispersities (less than or equal to1.34). The polymerization proceeded with first-order kinetics. Data from differential scanning calorimetry validated the microphase separation of the diblock copolymers. All block copolymers exhibited thermotropic liquid-crystalline behavior except for the one with M-n being 9500. Four liquid-crystalline diblock copolymers with PDMS weight fractions of more than 18% had two distinctive glass-transition temperatures. (C) 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Four new rod-coil diblock molecules, which had well-defined para-phenylene oligomers (PPP, from biphenyl to quinquephenyl) as rigid segments and poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO, M-w ca. 750) as flexible segments, were synthesized. The chemical structure and the number of repeating unit in PEO coil and PPP rod were characterized by H-1-NMR and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. The diblock oligomers showed good solubility in common organic solvents and aggregated in water as characterized by a blue shift in UV-vis absorption spectra, a red shift in emission spectra, quenching of the fluorescence and formation of the microfibrilla and fractal-like structures. The formation of different supramolecular structures meant that this effort might lead to commercial important highly organized functional materials.

Abstract:A series of diblock copolymers, composed of a soft poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) block with a defined length and a liquid crystalline poly(6-(4-(4'-cyanophenylazo) phenoxy) hexyl acrylate) (POCN) block with different lengths, was synthesized by the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). A homopolymer POCN was also prepared by the same method for comparison. The polymer structures, liquid crystalline phase, microphase-separated morphology, and photoisomerization were then investigated by H-1 NMR, FT-IR, GPC, UV-Vis, POM, DSC, XRD and TEM. The results showed that the well-defined diblock copolymers (PDMSn-b-POCNm) possess four different soft/rigid ratios (n = 58, m = 8, 15, 24, 36) and relatively narrow molecular distributions (PDI <= 1.30). POCN blocks of the copolymers form a smectic-A sub-phase, which is identical to the mesomorphic behaviour of POCN. After being annealed at 140 degrees C in a vacuum for 24 h, the copolymers form a lamellar morphology when WPDMS is 42.3-57.8% and a morphology of PDMS spheres embedded in an azo matrix when WPDMS is 23.3-31.4%. POCN and PDMSn-b-POCNm in solution show typical photoisomerization behaviour of the azobenzene moieties. Although H-aggregation is observed to a certain extent, photochemical processes of the as-cast films of the polymers are similar to those of the solutions. On the other hand, the photoisomerization behaviour of annealed PDMSn-b-POCNm films is significantly different from that of the annealed POCN film, which is closely correlated with the phase-separated morphologies. The observations can provide deep understanding of the phase-separated structures and be used to develop new materials.

Abstract:A novel poly(p-phenylene vinylene) (PPV)/poly(p-phenylene ethynylene) (PPE) block-copolymer was synthesized by a cross-coupling polycondensation with Pd(PPh3)(2)CI2 and a phase-transfer catalyst., and was confirmed by H-1 NMR and IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. The thermal, electrochemical, and photoluminescent properties of the new copolymer have been investigated. The incorporation of triple bonds into the cyano-substituted PPV (CN-PPV) backbone leads to higher oxidation and reduction potentials than poly(2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-p-phenylene vinylene) (MEH-PPV) and CN-PPV, potentially making the copolymer a good electron-transporting material for use in a light-emitting-diode device.

Abstract:Liquid crystalline diblock copolymers with different molecular weights and low poly-dispersities were synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and 2,5-bis[(4-methoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl]styrene (MPCS) monomers. The block architecture (coil-conformation of MMA segment and rigid-rod of MPCS segment) of the copolymer was experimentally confirmed by a combination of H-1 nuclear magnetic resonance and gel permeation chromatograph techniques. The liquid crystalline behaviour of the copolymer was studied using differential scanning calorimetry and polarized optical microscope. It was found that the liquid crystalline behaviour was dependent on the number average molecular weight of the rigid segment. Only those copolymers with M-n(GPC) of the rigid block above 9200 g mol(-1) could form liquid crystalline phases higher than the glass transition temperature of the rigid block. The random copolymers MPCS-co-MMA were also synthesized by conventional free radical polymerization. The molar content of MPCS in MPCS-co-MMA had to be higher than 71% to maintain liquid crystalline behaviour. (C) 2003 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract:A novel series of amphiphilic rod-rod block copolymers (PPA(m)-b-PrmEO(n)) based on achiral phenylacetylene (PA) and chiral I 3,5-disubstituted phenylacetylene (rmEO) were synthesized through sequential living polyrnerizaitons using the catalyst Rh[C(C6H5)=C(C6H5)(2)](nbd)(4-FC6H4)(3)P (nbd = norbornadiene) (Rh-cat). The living nature of the polymerization of rmEO using Rh-cat was proved. These block copolymers consist of a hydrophobic achiral stretched cis-transoid helical PPA block and a hydrophilic one-handed contracted cis-cisoid helical PrmEO block. The amphiphilic block copolymers could self assemble into well-defined aggregates in THE/H2O. The effects of the composition of block copolymers, water contents, and initial copolymer concentration on the formation of aggregates were investigated. The block copolymers with short corona-forming blocks formed vesicles, while those with long corona-forming blocks formed novel multiarm worm-like micelles. As the water content increased, the aggregates transformed from the spherical micelles to worm-like micelles, and then the end-caps of the worm-like micelles fused together to form the multiarm worm-like micelles. The formation mechanism of the multiarm worm-like micelles was proposed by considering the large end-capping energy originating from the rigid conformation of the copolymers. Besides, the copolymers tend to form vesicles at high initial copolymer concentration.

Abstract:The self-assembling ability of block copolymers offers an attractive strategy for the organization of pi-conjugated polymers. This article reports the synthesis of a coil-rod-coil triblock copolymer consisting of oligo(p-phenyleneethynylene) as the rodlike segment and polystyrene as the coil-like segment. The chemical structure of the afforded triblock copolymer has been fully characterized by various spectroscopic techniques such as NMR, Raman, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, ultraviolet-visible, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The small-angle neutron scattering and photophysical measurements indicate that this triblock copolymer exhibits unique solvatochromatic behaviors through the interplay of aggregation-induced pi-pi stacking and planarization of the conjugated backbone. Supramolecular gel nanostructures have been produced via the controlled assembly of the polymer into H-aggregates. It has been demonstrated that the use of the solvent composition to influence chain conformations and thus to manipulate the packing of the conjugated polymer blocks is important for achieving control in the assembly of conducting polymers and associated optical characteristics. Abstract:In this work, a series of diblock copolymers with a defined length of a soft poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) segment and different lengths of liquid crystalline (LC) poly[11-(4-cyano-4'-biphenoxy)undecyl methacrylate] (P11CBMA) segments were synthesized by using the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) method. Their microphase separation behavior and dielectric properties were carefully investigated. The well-defined diblock copolymers PDMSm-b-P11CBMA(n) possess three different soft/rigid ratios (m = 62, n = 15, 22, and 40) and narrow molecular distributions (PDI <= 1.25). Due to the supramolecular cooperative motion effect, the copolymers can form lamellar morphology (W-LC = 57.8%), predominant lamellar morphology with PDMS cylindrical defects (W-LC = 66.8%), and PDMS cylinders embedded in the LC matrix (W-LC = 78.3%) after annealing at 160 degrees C (above T-i) under N-2 for 24 h, respectively. The dielectric properties of the block copolymers were strongly influenced by the microphase separated morphologies and orientational directions of mesogens. Compared to homopolymer P11CBMA, PDMSm-b-P11CBMA(n) showed higher dielectric constants due to the confinement effect of microdomain dimensions. The dielectric constants of diblock copolymers could be further improved by aligning mesogens parallel to the electric field through substrate treatments. These findings will inspire researchers to design and develop novel LC block copolymers for dielectric elastomer actuator applications.

Abstract:An optically active rod-coll-rod triblock copolymer containing poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) as the flexible segment and poly {( +)-2, 5-bis [4'-((s)-2-methyl butoxy) phenyl] styrene} ( PMBPS) as the rigid segment, PMBPS-b-PEO-b-PMBPS, was synthesized via atom-transfer radical polymerization. The PMRPS block had a stable helical conformation with an excess of screw sense in solution. The self-assembly behavior of the triblock copolymer in dioxane/water mixed solvents was examined by means of TEM and turbidity measurements. The triblock copolymer molecules aggregated when water content in the system was about 2wt%. The higher the initial polymer concentrations, the lower the critical water content. They formed vesicles with highly dispersed outside diameters, but they had a relatively uniform wall thickness of (27 +/- 3) nm.

Abstract:A novel star shaped rod-coil block copolymer, tri-armed star poly (ε-caprolactone)-b-poly {2,5-bis[(4-methoxyphenyl) oxycabony] styrene} [S-(PCL-b-PMPCS)3], was successfully synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization in chlorobenzene solution using macro-initiator and CuBr/Sparteine complex as catalyst. The results showed that the number average molecular weigh Mn was increased versus monomer conversion, and that the polydispersities Mw/Mn was quite narrow (<1.35), which were the character of controlled polymerization. The structure of the star shaped blcok copolymers was experimentally confirmed by 1H NMR. The liquid crystalline behavior of them was studied using DSC and POM. The star shaped block copolymer with low molar percentage of PMPCS block could show Tm of PCL. And only those copolymers with long rigid segment PMPCS could form liquid crystalline phase which was quite stable with a high clearing point.

Abstract:Abstract Poly( p ‐dioxanone) (PPDO) produced by ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of p ‐dioxanone (PDO) has been attracted intensive attention in bioengineering and environmental materials due to the coexistence of ester and ether bonds in the repeating units. Herein, we systematically study the ROP behavior of PDO using classical organic amidine and guanidine compounds. The cyclic and linear PPDO homopolymers are efficiently produced and confirmed by the combination of 1 H, 13 C NMR and MALDI‐TOF MS spectra. Furthermore, triblock copolymers (PPDO‐ b ‐PCL‐ b ‐PPDO) containing poly( ε ‐caprolactone) (PCL) as the soft segment and PPDO as the hard segment are prepared in the presence of ethylene glycol. The resultant block copolymers are well characterized using NMR, gel permeation chromatography, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. It is found that the prepared triblock copolymers exhibit tunable flexibility, stabilization, hydrophilicity, and mechanical strength, which could be used as thermoplastic materials in biological and tissue engineering areas.

Abstract:A series of helix-coil diblock copolymers based on poly(ethylene oxide) and optically active helical poly[ {(+)-2,5-bis [4'-((S)-2-methylbutoxy)phenyl] styrene] (PMBPS) were synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The synthetic methodology permitted straightforward preparation of the diblock copolymers with relatively low polydispersities and a broad range of compositions and molecular weights. Depending on the composing block length and the initial concentration, the copolymers self-assembled into different supramolecular structures in aqueous solution, including spherical micelles, vesicles, multilamellar vesicles, large compound vesicles, and tubules.

Abstract:Three new topology-varied rod-coil block copolymers, comprising the same oligo(p-phenyleneethynylene) (OPE) rod components and the same coil components, were synthesized by atom-transfer radical polymerization. Their photophysical properties were systematically studied and compared in consideration of their solid-state structures and self-assembly abilities. These copolymers have similar intrinsic photophysical properties to the OPE rods, as reflected in dilute solution. However, their photophysical properties in the solid state are manipulated to be dissimilar by supramolecular organization. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) data demonstrate that these copolymers possess different self-assembly abilities due to the molecular-architecture-dependent pi-pi interactions of the rods. Hence, the aggregates in the solid state are formed with a different mechanism for these copolymers, bringing about the discrepancy in the solid-state luminescent properties.

Abstract:Herein, we report the synthesis of a hybrid material composed of a head-to-head substituted polyacetylene end-capped with [60] fullerene through anionic polymerization. The synthesis was carried out in three successive steps: anionic polymerization of 2,3-diphenyl-1,3-butadiene, anionic addition of the resulting living chains towards C-60, and dehydrogenation of the polymer segment in the presence of 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyano-1,4-benzoquinone (DDQ). Since the precursor polymer is a coil-like polybutadiene derivative and the dehydrogenated polymer is a rod-like conjugated segment, the molecular hybrids underwent a change from a "coil-sphere" to " rod-sphere" conformation before and after dehydrogenation. The structure and properties of the molecular hybrids were investigated via H-1 NMR, FTIR, GPC, FLS, UV and TGA. The self-assembly behaviors of both molecular hybrids in THF were studied using DLS and TEM. Moreover, we also observed an obvious optical limiting property of the hybrid product, which indicates that it may potentially be utilized as a functional opto-electronic material.

Abstract:A series of well-defined polydimethylsiloxane-b-poly(ethylene oxide) (PDMS-b-PEO) amphiphilic diblock copolymers were synthesized by the combined use of anionic ring-opening polymerization of hexamethylcyclotrisioxane (D-3) with n-butyllithium as the initiator and hydrosilation between Si-H terminated PDMS and ally terminated PEO homopolymers. The structures of PDMS and amphiphilic diblock copolymers PDMS-b-PEO were verified by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy analyses. The diblock copolymers showed monomodal gel permeation chromatography (GPC) traces which indicated narrow molecular weight distributions (MWDs). Additionally, the solution properties of these diblock copolymers were investigated using tensiometry and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The equilibrium surface tension gamma and critical micelle concentration (cmc) of PDMS-b-PEO in an aqueous solution was also investigated. Interestingly, the cmc increases as the length of the hydrophobic chain increases. Transmission electron microscopy showed that PDMS-b-PEO diblock copolymers in the aqueous solution self-assembled into various morphologies including spheres, rods, and vesicle aggregates.
