Abstract:2,6-Bis(5,6-dialkyl-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)-pyridine (R-BTP) is one of the most promising classes of soft N-donor ligands for minor trivalent actinide (such as Am(iii) and Cm(iii)) separation but its complexation behavior with interfering element Pd(ii) is still unknown. The effect of substituents (R-) on the modulation of R-BTP's complexation with Pd(ii) was studied by single crystal diffractometry, H-1 NMR spectroscopy, ESI-MS, and density functional theory (DFT) calculation methods. The formation of both 1:1 and 2:1 complexes of R-BTP with Pd(ii) were firstly identified, and their electronic and geometric structures were determined. It has been found that the modification of the R-BTP skeleton with substituents (R-) changing from methyl (C1) to s-butyl (C4) leads to two different coordination models with water. The structures of 2:1 R-BTP/Pd(ii) complexes were determined to be unusually paramagnetic, distorted six-coordinate compounds. However, the 1:1 species was found to have a typical square-planar geometry. The extraction properties of four R-BTPs for Pd(ii) and other fission or corrosion products were studied. This work can help to further understand the complexation behavior of Pd(ii) with R-BTP, which provides theoretical insights into the partitioning of minor actinides and Pd(ii) from high level active waste (HLW) using R-BTP type ligands.

Abstract:Soft N-donor bis-triazin bipyridines derives (R-BTBP) are a type of very promising extratant for extraction and complexation with long-lived trivalent minor actinides over lanthanides from highly active liquid waste (HLW). In addition to minor actinides, R-BTBP also holds very strong complexation ability toward fission palladium. However, few studies have been focused on the separation and complexation with the fission product Pd(II) by R-BTBP. Herein, the complexation behaviors of Pd(II) with four typical R-BTBP ligands were systematically studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction, H-1 NMR titration and theoretical calculation. The effects of R-BTBP initial conformation and nitrate anions on the complexation behaviors of R-BTBP with Pd(II) were thoughtfully analyzed. Both the 1:1 and 2:1 binuclear complexes could be formed between Pd(II) and R-BTBP with initial II conformation in the presence of nitrate anions, while only one 1:1 type Pd(II) complex could be formed for those with initial OO conformation. Without nitrate anion, only one 1:1 type complex was formed in solution. The structure of the 1:1 Pd(II)/R-BTBP complex was firstly characterized by single crystal crystallography. DFT calculation results showed that a significant large rotational energy barrier (21.8 similar to 22.6 kcal/mol) must be overcome to form the II type 2:1 Pd(II) complex for those OO type R-BTBP ligands, however which would not prevent them from forming the 1:1 type complex. New Insight into the Partitioning of Minor Actinides I: Extraction of Palladium and Some Typical Metals with A Multidentate Soft-Ligand 2,6-Bis(5,6-dinonyl-1,2,4-triazine-3-yl)pyridine

Abstract:A new multidentate soft-ligand 2,6-bis(5,6-dinonyl-1,2,4-triazine-3-yl-pyridine (NonBTP) was synthesized. The solvent extraction of Pd(II) and some typical metals Ru(III), Mo(VI), Fe(III), Co(II), Zr(IV), and Ni(II) with NonBTP/30 % 1-octanol-70 % 1-dodecane was investigated at 298 K. It was performed by examining the effects of contact time and the concentration of HNO3 in the range of (0.42 to 5.11) M. NonBTP showed a strong extraction ability and high selectivity for Pd(II) over the tested metals, which had very weak or almost no extraction. The optimum acidity in the extraction of Pd(II) was around 3.0 M HNO3. It was ascribed to the complexation of Pd(II), a weak Lewis acid and an electron-pair acceptor, with nitrogen inside NonBTP, a weak Lewis base and an electron-pair donor. The extraction of NonBTP for Pd(II) was an exothermic reaction. The composition of the extracted species was determined to be Pd(NO3)(2)center dot 2NonBTP. Considering the excellent complexation of minor actinides MAs(III) with NonBTP, the results are beneficial to simultaneous partitioning of MA(III) and Pd(II) from highly active liquid waste by the NonBTP-containing extraction system.

Abstract:A novel phenanthroline-derived bis-opened-triazine ligand for selective complexation with Pd(II) over 19 typical metals from HNO3 media was designed based on cavity modulation strategy. Structures of the three species of the Pd(II) complexes of with the ligand were elucidated by H-1 NMR titration isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) and density functional theory (DFT) studies. ITC test and binding energy calculations demonstrated that the asymmetrical 1 : 1 Pd(II)-ligand complex with a monodentate nitrate anion was the most stable among these three species of the Pd(II) complexes. The excellent kinetics of Pd(II) extraction with the ligand is due to its optimal conformation completely ready for metal ligation. The enhanced special extraction selectivity and fast extraction rate towards Pd(II) achieved by the phenanthroline-derived ligand demonstrated that the effective separation of some radionuclides with smaller radius in HLW through cavity modulation strategy is a feasible approach.

Abstract:The efficient separation of palladium, one of the precious metals, is one of the most challenging works that have not been solved. Based on soft-ligand multi-nitrogen organic agents, a new triazine-containing hybrid functional silica-adsorbent, BisDiOTP@SiO2, was prepared and characterized. The uptake of more than ten representative metals towards BisDiOTP@SiO2 was investigated in the wide range of 0.4-5.0 M HNO3. The high uptake ability and excellent selectivity of Pd(II) towards BisDiOTP@SiO2 were indicated. The enrichment and removal of Pd(II) by batch experiments through six cycles of uptake and desorption were conducted. The separation efficiency was 99.3% for Pd(II), 5.9% for Co(II) and less than 0.2% for all others. Pd(II) was separated effectively from others. A new technical process entitled SPMP (Simultaneous Partitioning of MA(III)/Pd(H) by Extraction Chromatography) for Pall) separation along with minor actinides has been developed.

Abstract:To separate Pd(II), a macroporous silica-based soft-ligand 2,6-bis(5,6-di(iso-butyl)-1,2,4-triazine-3-yl)pyridine (BDIBTP) material, BDIBTP/SiO2-P, was synthesized by vacuum treatment. It was a multidentate chelating composite prepared by impregnation and immobilization of BDIBTP and 1-octanol molecules into the pores of the macroporous SiO2-P particles with a mean diameter of 50 mu m. 1-Octanol was used to modify BDIBTP through intermolecular interaction force. The adsorption of some typical fission products Zr(IV), Pd(II), La(III), Y(III), Ru(III), Rh(III), and Mo(VI) contained in highly active liquid waste (HLW) onto the BDIBTP/ SiO2-P materials was investigated. It was carried out by examining the effects of contact time and the concentration of HNO3 in the range of 0.3M7.0M. BDIBTP/SiO2-P showed excellent adsorption ability and high selectivity for Pd(II) over all of the tested metals. It was ascribed to the effective complexation of Pd(II) with BDIBTP/SiO2-P. Consideration of the complexation of BDIBTP for minor actinides MAs(III), the possibility and feasibility of effective partitioning of Pd(II) and MAs(III) simultaneously from a simulated HLW were discussed. A new concept process entitled MPS for the MA(III) and Pd(II) Separation has been proposed.

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of two novel symmetric triazine-ring opening ligands CA-MP (pyridine derivative)/CA-BOPhen (1,10-phenanthroline derivative) functionalized SiO2-P (P = Polymer) adsorbents for separation of Pd(II) from HNO3 solutions are presented. SEM, N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, TGA and EDS spectroscopy characterization results showed that CA-MP and CA-BOPhen were successfully introduced into the pores of SiO2-P carrier via physical intermolecular interactions. CA-MP@SiO2-P and CA-BOPhen@SiO2-P show high efficiency, high selectivity, extremely fast adsorption rates towards Pd(II) over 19 typical fission or corrosion products in HNO3 solution. The distribution coefficient Kd values of CA-MP@SiO2-P and CA-BOPhen@SiO2-P are up to 206.5 and 205.7 cm3/g, respectively, within 10-15 min of contact time in 0.4 M HNO3. The adsorption capacities of them to Pd(II) were determined to be 0.36 mmol/g and 0.23 mmol/g, respectively. The fast adsorption rates and high selectivity of two adsorbents towards Pd(II) were related to the formation of the highly preorganized complex [Pd(NO3)(L)]+ (L = CA-MP or CA-BOPhen). These results demonstrate that CA-MP@SiO2-P and CA-BOPhen@SiO2-P possess great potential for highly efficient removal of Pd(II) from highly active liquid waste (HLW).

Abstract:A novel mesoporous polymer-based composite, C7-BTBP/XAD-7, was prepared by impregnating 6,6’-bis(5,6-diheptyl-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)-2,2’-bipyridine (C7-BTBP) into the pores of the polymeric XAD-7 carrier. The microstructure of the material was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The selective adsorption of Pd(II) onto C7-BTBP/XAD-7 from a HNO3 medium containing some typical metals, including Ru(III), Fe(III), Mo(VI), Zr(IV), Li(I), Na(I), K(I), Rb(I), Cs(I), Mg(II), Ca(II), Sr(II), Ba(II), Y(III), La(III), Nd(III), and Yb(III), was investigated. The polymeric composite exhibited strong adsorption affinity, high selectivity, and fast adsorption rate for Pd(II) in 3.0 M HNO3. The adsorption isotherm fitted well with Langmuir model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 0.412 mmol/g. The hybrid polymeric composite was very stable in HNO3 solution. The kinetics of Pd(II) coordinated with C7-BTBP was discussed by Density Function Theory (DFT) calculations.

BDBTP/SiO2-P showed excellent adsorption ability and high selectivity for Pd(II) over all the tested metals. The separation of Pd(II) from a simulated HLW was performed by BDBTP/SiO2-P packed column. Pd(II) was effectively eluted with 0.2 M thiourea and separated from the others. It demonstrated that in HNO3, application of the macroporous silica-based BDBTP/SiO2-P material in partitioning and recovery of Pd(II) from HLW is promising. Abstract:The anionic monocarborane alkyne [12-(HC?C)-CB11H11](-) was employed as a ligand towards Cu(i) to form terminal alkyne complexes. Spectroscopic methods and X-ray crystallography allowed for a detailed structural analysis of complexes with nitrogen ligands, which are the first examples featuring carborane-C?CH -> metal pi coordination. Addition of phosphines to compound 2 afforded homoleptic Cu(i) complexes [Cu(PR3)(n)](+) (4), in which case the carborane becomes a non-coordinating anion. Polymeric acetylide 5 was obtained in almost quantitative yield from 2 and proved to be a suitable precursor to heterobimetallic Cu(i)/M(ii) (M = Pd, Pt) alkynide complexes with side-on and end-on coordination to the metal centers.

Palladium complexes containing NNN pincer type ligands and their activities in Suzuki-Miyaura cross coupling reaction

Abstract:Five new NNN pincer-type ligands and their palladium complexes were successfully synthesised and characterised by FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, and UV-vis analyses. TEM analysis was used to observe the morphological character of the black residues obtained from the fourth cycle of the reusability test. Furthermore, suitable crystals of the N2,N6-bis(2-tert-butylphenyl)pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamide and its palladium complex were elucidated with the X-ray single crystal diffraction method. Both the ligand and its palladium complex crystallise in a monoclinic system with space group P21/c for the H2L4 and C2/c for the palladium complex. The structure of the pincer ligand and its palladium complex were stabilised by intramolecular and intermolecular C-H⋅⋅⋅O, C-H⋅⋅⋅N, and N-H⋅⋅⋅N contacts. A Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction between aryl halides and phenylboronic acid was used to assess the catalytic abilities of the palladium pincer complexes. All of the prepared complexes exhibited considerable catalytic activity. However, complexes 4 (Acetonitrile-N2,N6-bis(2-tert-butylphenyl)pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamidopalladium(II)) and 5 (Acetonitrile-N2,N6-bis(2-nitrophenyl)pyridine-2,6-dicarboxamidopalladium(II)) provided almost 100% conversion with nearly 100% yield in the reaction between 4-bromotoluene and phenylboronic acid. Furthermore, these active complexes catalysed the reaction of the sterically hindered and deactivated substrates (1-Bromo-4-izobutylbenzene and 2-bromo-6-methoxynaphthalene) with phenylboronic acid, and complete conversion and yields up to 100% were achieved in a short time with the 2-bromo-6-methoxynaphthalene.

Abstract:A new 4-aminophenyl ammonium dithiocarbamate ligand and its PdII and PtII complexes have been synthesized and characterized by analytical, magnetic and spectroscopic techniques. These complexes on reaction with strong base form novel anionic metal(II) dithiocarbimates, which have also been isolated and studied. The spectroscopic and magnetic data clearly indicate the bidentate bonding by the dithiocarbamate ligand in the complexes and which have square planar configurations. The single-crystal X-ray analysis of (Bu4nN)2[Pd(S2CNC6H4NH2)2] gave the first example of the structure of a dithiocarbimato complex. The PdII complex has a square-planar configuration with the S2CNC6H4NH2 group coordinated as an asymmetric bidentate ligand forming a stable four-membered ring by chelation through the two sulfur atoms.

Abstract:The reactions of Pd(II) ions with starburst ligands 1,3,5-tris(di-2-pyridylamino)benzene (tdab) and 2,4,6-tris(di-2-pyridylamino)-1,3,5-triazene (tdat) have been investigated. Complexes with the Pd:tdab (or tdat) ratio being 1:1 and 3:1 have been isolated and characterized. The structures of five new Pd(II) complexes containing the starburst ligands have been determined by X-ray diffraction analyses, which include chelate compounds [PdCl(2)(tdab)], 1, [(PdCl(2))(3)(tdab)], 2, [(Pd(OAc)(2))(3)(tdab)], 4, and [(Pd(OAc)(2))(3)(tdat)], 5, and a cyclometalated compound [Pd(OAc)(NCN-tdab)], 3. The Pd(II) ion in the 1:1 compound 1 is chelated by two pyridyl groups. Similarly, each Pd(II) center in the 3:1 compounds 2, 4, and 5 is chelated by two pyridyl groups. However, these three compounds display distinct structural features: 2 adopts a "bowl-shaped" structure, 4 has a "pinwheel"-like structure, and 5 has a "up-and-down" structure. Compounds 4 and 5 were examined in solution by variable-temperature (1)H NMR, which revealed that both compounds retain the "pinwheel" and the "up-and-down" structure, respectively. The observed structural preference by 4 and 5 is attributed to both electronic and steric factors.

Abstract:Four air stable, neutral pi-allylpalladium(II) complexes containing bis(1,2,4-triazol-5-ylidene-1-yl)borate ligands [H2B(RBTz)(2)Pd(pi-allyl)] (R = Bu-n, 2a; Bu-t, 2b; 2,6-diisopropylphenyl, 2c; cyclohexyl, 2d) have been prepared and characterized. The molecular structures of 2c and 2d have been confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. To our surprise, the coordination geometry about the palladium atom in 2d is distorted tetrahedron, in which the allyl group is nearly perpendicular to the plane defined by the Pd and the carbene C atoms. Abstract:Palladium halides react with 4H-pyran-4-one (P) and 2,6-dimethyl-4H-pyran-4-one (DMP) to yield [Pd-(DMP)2X2] (X=Cl or Br), [Pd(P)2Cl2] and [Pd(P)Br2]n complexes which have been characterized by i.r. and proton n.m.r. spectroscopy. the thermal behaviour of the 4-pyrone adducts is correlated with that ofN,N-dimethylformamide analogues, [Pd(DMF)2Cl2] and [Pd(DMF)Br2]n, the ligand coordinating ability following the order: DMP>P>DMF. On the basis of i.r. spectra, the [Pd(L)2Cl2] (L-DMP or P) adducts should have the usualtrans configuration, whereas in both [Pd(P)Br2]n and [Pd(DMP)2Br2] a polymeric arrangement through bromine bridges should be present. The properties of the [Zn(P)2Cl2] and [Pt(DMP)2Cl2] complexes are also discussed.

Palladium(II) Complex with Tridentate Ligand Containing Pyrenyl Core

Abstract:A series of ligands containing pyrenyl core which are PyEt1, PyEt2, and PyEt3 have been successfully synthesized. PyEt2, a bidentate ligand and PyEt3, a tridentate ligand were used to prepared Pd(II) complexes by reactions with PdCl2(CH3CN)2. The titled compounds displayed intriguing geometries around the central palladium atoms. 1H-NMR results showed that palladium in Pd-PyEt3 adopts a five-coordinate configuration. Symmetrical and Non‐symmetrical Pd (II) Pincer Complexes Bearing Mesoionic N‐heterocyclic Thiones: Synthesis, Characterizations and Catalytic Properties

Abstract:In contrast to well‐established symmetrical pincer complexes, non‐symmetrical metal pincers with the loss of C2v symmetry are much less studied. In this work, mesoionic NHTs (NHTs = N‐heterocyclic thiones), which can be viewed as the sulfur adducts of mesoionic carbenes, are incorporated into pincer complexes for the first time. Two symmetrical and non‐symmetrical phenylene‐bridged bis (NHT) compounds 3a /3b were synthesized as proligands via a "cycloaddition‐alkylation‐thionation" reaction sequence. In a case to access bis (NHT) compound 3c , N‐dealkylation reactions occurred. The carbene NMR signals of NHTs are only partially correlated to the π‐accepting abilities of carbenes, which is different from Bertrand's carbene‐phosphinidene system. The structural analysis of 3a /3b indicates that they possess C‐S partial double bonds. 3a and 3b served as the precursors to access two aryl anion‐linked [SCS/S′] pincer complexes 6a /6b . An external base proved to be essential for this cyclopalladation process. The catalytic properties of 6a /6b in the cycloisomerizations of alkynoic acids have been examined. Finally, non‐symmetrical complex 6a shows superior catalytic performance in such transformations contrasting to its symmetrical counterpart 6b .

Abstract:In the solvothermal condition, a Pd(II) complex with a in situ synthesis ligand, [Pd(2,2’-bipy)2(CN)2] (1) was obtained and characterized by elemental analysis, IR, UV, TG, and powder X-ray analysis. The single crystal X-ray analysis showed that the title complex is different from the reported 2,2’-bipyridyl-dicyanopalladium(II) (2) in crystal system and structural parameters. The catalytic investigation for the reactions of the disproportionation of hydrogen peroxide and oxidation of sulfide showed that the complex 1 is an active homogeneous catalyst in the presence of imidazole and 2-sulfobenzoic acid, respectively.
