Abstract:Based on CHIP data executed in 2003 and 2008,this paper conducts a comparative study on the intergenera-tional differences and time-point differences between the first and second generation of migrant workers by the perspectives of wage determination and willingness of staying in the city.The regression results show that there is no significant difference between two generations in wage determination and willingness of staying in the city,and migrant workers as a whole still heavily rely on job mobility to improve their income level.Specifically,the second generation of migrant workers have higher levels of education,especially in 2008,but there is no significant intergenerational difference on return of education or im-provement over time.Both generations rely on job mobility to raise their income level,which is even more prominent in 2008, without apparent intergenerational differences,also showing high willingness to stay in the city in two survey years.Main fac-tors that affect the migrant workers’willingness to stay in the city show the features of time-point differences rather than in-tergenerational differences.Migratory job mobility do no good for the second generation migrant workers’willingness to stay in the city in 2008.Besides,the income levels of cities,pension,health care and other social undertakings development level are the important factors that affect the whole migrant workers’willingness to stay in the city.
Analysis on the intentions of continuing migration of the migrated residents

Abstract:Based on a survey on 960 residents in Zhejiang, Henan and Sichuan provinces who have already migrated from rural to urban, this paper uses the binary logic regression model to analyze the intentions of migrating again of these migrants.Based on analysis above, the descriptive statistics reveal that 69.69% of them are reluctant to move into other places mainly for the livelihood, while 30.31% of them are willing to move again when considering economic reasons.In addition, judging from the total samples of the three provinces, there are six results:①Women always possess a stronger willingness to migrate than men did.②The age of these migrates has a significant negative impact on willingness of moving again, and some elder ones prefer to live in these original cities.③Because of the difficulties of taking care of the aged parents` health and children`s education, the families with three generations have more willingness to migrate than the single families.④The handicraftsmen do not want to move to other cities since their advantages of skills could be the guarantee for living, while the village cadres really want to.⑤The total annual income of one household has a significant positive effect on the desire to move again.⑥There are some obvious differences among Zhejiang, Sichuan and Henan just because they belong to the east, middle and west regions respectively, such as the differences in socio-economic, income and cultural attitudes.Last but not least, we can also draw five conclusions in terms of provincial comparison:①Gender, work life and family type can be the significant factors both in Zhejiang and Sichuan` models, but in the opposite direction.②The type of work affects these three provinces at the same time, but there still are some differences.③Residents in Henan aren`t sensitive to the change of the total annual income of the families, while those in Sichuan and Zhejiang provinces are significantly positive to the changes.④Number of years for migrating has a significant positive impact on Henan Province, while the opposite to the other provinces.⑤The models in Zhejiang and Sichuan explain the fact that if the residents prefer not to move when they feel more satisfied with the government.This paper argues that the governments should play an important role in guiding in the process of promoting the new urbanization which is human-centered.They should concern about the reasonable needs of the residents who have already moved into the city, such as the needs on economy, sociality, education, social security and other aspects, as well as pay more attention to the differences on socioeconomic and cultural concepts between different regions.What`s more, we should formulate innovative migration-related systems and implement the relevant security policies are also important.

Abstract:Based on 2513 survey samples of migrant labors from the rural in 7 cities of Zhejiang province,the paper analyzes the employment status and social security situation of the rural migrant labors by descriptive statistical methods,and establishes an order probit model to explore the factors influencing the migrant labors' willingness to migrate between cities and the differences in gender and generation.The findings show that employment status and social security affect the migrant labor's willingness to migrate between cities.In addition,factors such as family structure,migration and education have significant impact on the migrant labor's willingness to migrate too.The impacts of these factors have differences by gender and generations.

Abstract:Based on a survey of 1 325 farmer households in Zhejiang,Sichuan and Henan Province,this paper use logistic regression models to emprical analyze the migration intentions of rural households in three provinces chosen from Central,Eastern and Western of China.The result shows that age,numbers of students and Hukou policy have a significant negative impact on migration intention.Duration of education and total household income have a positive significant impact.Social network and One Child policy have no significant impact on migration intention.The analysis of different provinces shows that:duration of education,duration of working,Hukou policy,age and total household income have a significant impact on migration intention.However,there is regional heterogeneity in the three provinces.Based on the empirical study,this paper puts forward some policy implications.
The Impact of Labor Migration on Farm Households' Rice Production

Abstract:Based on survey data from Jiangxi province in 2009,this paper establishes production functions to analyze the productivity changes of farm households in response to the outflowof family members,in the point of viewof village level agricultural infrastructure investment and life cycle theory.The empirical results suggest that the remittance from migrant members can help farm households use more chemical fertilizer and pesticides in rice production to get more yields,while the increase of non-agriculture income weakens their concentration on farm work and hence negatively affect rice output.Migrant households at villages with poor infrastructure may input insufficient labor,sharply reducing the output of rice.

Abstract:Based on the employment surveys migrant workers from Zhejiang in Hangzhou City,the paper analyzed the generational differences in the employment of migrant workers.First of all,descriptive statistics on the individual characteristics,socio-economic characteristics,and employment status of two generations of migrant workers were conducted;then followed by F test,T test,and range test on the independent samples to verify the existence of significant differences in two generations of peasant workers in wages and benefits,occupation,expected future employment.Quality-related analysis was conducted to verify whether the age difference of migrant workers influences the purpose of motivation,employment channels,the most important employment difficulties encountered.The results showed that there are significant differences between two generations of migrant workers in wages,multiple occupation,and work experience;and there are significant differences between two generations of migrant workers in the motive and purpose of flow and the employment channels.

Abstract:Well-developed cities have long featured as favoured destinations for Chinese migrant workers. In recent years, however, the incidence of return migration has increased in China, with a significant impact on economic development and social governance at both the origins and destinations. Owing to the limited availability of data, the return intentions of migrant workers at the national level have gone largely unexplored. Using data from the 2016 China Migrant Dynamic Survey (CMDS), the study investigates the return intentions of migrant workers residing in destination cities. Econometric data analysis indicates that family connections (i.e. family members living together, and whether to migrate with children) and housing factors (i.e. housing ownership, housing expenditure proportion, housing tenure, and group living) have significant effects on return intentions and that social and spatial factors (i.e. type of industry, employment status, insurance coverage, migration distance, and duration of stay) also play significant roles. Our results point as well to the influence of geographical location on return intentions. The study concludes with recommendations regarding the formulation of population management policies.

Abstract:Specialists on agricultural economics and economic development of China examine the dynamics of rural-to-urban migration in China from the perspective of migrant labor supply for the period of 1987-2008. Restricted by the hukou (registered permanent residence) system, rural households in China usually do not relocate from countryside to cities; only migrant workers travel back and forth. This circular pattern of migrant workers negatively influences their migration stability, thereby resulting in the instability of China's migrant labor supply. By using panel data from rural household surveys in China, we examine migration persistence at both the household level and the individual level. We find that the extent of migration persistence was relatively low in China, suggesting that migrant labor supply was unstable. In addition, we find that labor counts, education level, and network effects improved households' migration persistence. We also find that migration persistence was associated with individual characteristics, such as age, gender, and health conditions.

Abstract:Based on a 2009 survey of 2400 migrants in 12 cities across 4 China’s major urbanizing areas, we investigate the migrants’ fertility and son preference and the determinants of these preferences. We find migrants now have fertility preferences close to those of urban residents while they still have significant son preference on average. However, migrants have both lower fertility and son preference compared to China’s rural residents. Regression-based analysis indicates that the age, education, gender, marriage status, health and employment type all have impacts on migrants’s fertility and son preference.
Tracking Rural-To-Urban Migration In China: Lessons From The 2005 Inter-Census Population Survey

Abstract:We examined migration in China using the 2005 inter-census population survey, in which migrants were registered at both their place of original (hukou) residence and at their destination. We find evidence that the estimated number of internal migrants in China is extremely sensitive to the enumeration method. We estimate that the traditional destination-based survey method fails to account for more than a third of migrants found using comparable origin-based methods. The missing' migrants are disproportionately young, male, and holders of rural hukou. We find that origin-based methods are more effective at capturing migrants who travel short distances for short periods, whereas destination-based methods are more effective when entire households have migrated and no remaining family members are located at the hukou location. We conclude with a set of policy recommendations for the design of population surveys in countries with large migrant populations.

Abstract:Based on a national-scale survey conducted in 2009 and methods of statistical descriptive and econometric analysis,the paper has given an empirical analysis on the migration of college graduates in China.It is found that 54.2%of college graduates choose to stay in the place where they have pursued college study. Graduates from coastal provinces are less likely to migrate than those from the western and central regions.The level of economic development is the key factor to inter-provincial migration.Individual personal characteristics, individual human capital variables and social-economic background are main factors influencing migration.

Abstract:The paper studies the dynamic change of the migrant labor market in China from 2002 to 2007 using two comparable data sets. Our focus is on the rural-urban migration decision, the wage structure of migrants, the urban labor market segmentation between migrants and urban natives, and the changes of these aspects from 2002 to 2007. We find that prior migration experience is a key factor for the migration decision of rural household members, and its importance keeps increasing from 2002 to 2007. Our results show that there is a significant increase in wages among both migrants and urban natives over this 5-year period, but migrants have enjoyed faster wage growth, and most of the increase of wages among migrants can be attributed to the increase of returns to their characteristics. We also find evidence suggesting convergence of urban labor markets for migrants and for urban natives during this 5-year period.

Abstract:Due to the constraints of the rural-urban household registration systems, the migrants of China currently receive varying degrees of medical services. The fact that many migrants choose to return to their hometowns due to the inequality in medical care has been a social phenomenon. Using data from the 2017 China Migrant Dynamic Survey (CMDS), this paper explores the effect of medical services on population migration. Probit regression analysis method was utilized to examine the relationship between medical service level (MSL) and medical service improvement (MSI) and return behavior (RB), as well as the interaction effect between MSL and MSI, and the moderating effect of health status (HS) and health education (HE). Multiple heterogeneity tests were performed. Grouping regressions were conducted using rural household registration (RHR), grouping regressions were conducted using new rural cooperative medical system (NRCMS), and multinomial Probit regressions were conducted using migration distance and age factors. The following findings were obtained. First, when MSL is low but MSI is high in the locality of household registration, the return probability of migrants will increase. MSL also has a positive interaction effect with MSI, and they jointly increase the return probability of migrants; Second, HS and HE have a positive moderating effect on the relationships between MSL and RB and between MSI and RB; Third, heterogeneity analysis indicates that the migrants with RHR or the migrants not covered by the NRCMS are more prone to return due to the reason of medical service. In addition, the analysis also shows that middle-aged and older people who return across provinces have the highest tendency to return due to medical services and young people have the lowest propensity to return across and within provinces. The study could help local governments change their public medical care policies and close the gap between medical services in different areas. As a result, it is necessary to understand population migration trends and promote New Urbanization Strategies.

Analysis of the Effects of Contraceptive Intervention Program on the Service and Demand of Family Planning Among Migrants

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the effect of contraceptive intervention program on family planning/contraceptive management,service and demand among floating population in Minhang District,Shanghai.Methods: Through multi-stage cluster sampling,2000 migrants were selected.These migrants centralized in factories,constructive area and entertainment area of Minghang District,Shanghai City were recruited into control and intervention team,respectively.The control group received the ordinary contraceptive service.Besides the ordinary service,the intervention group also received many sorts of interventions,including training,advisory service,follow-up service,and so on.Twelve months after the intervention,evaluation survey were conducted,to evaluate the effects of contraceptive intervention program on the service and demand of family planning.Results: Total 2 001 migrants were surveyed in the baseline and 1 791 migrants were followed in the evaluation survey.There was significant increase on terms of the proportion of who possessed marriage certification among the intervention group(P<0.000 1).Evaluation survey showed that,as regards the proportion of services received,the intervention group was higher than the control group including counseling,technology,and follow-up services.Multi-logistic regression analysis showed that education,the workplace,the average monthly income,flow patterns and the household registration were the influencing factors on demand for educational and counseling services,while marital status,gender,and residence time in the current place also had an impact on communication and education service.Conclusions: The workplace-based integrated intervention can improve migrants to accept family planning communication and education,counseling,follow-up and technical services,but no influence on demand for educational and consulting services can be found.

Abstract:Based on the one-thousand census original data and the viewpoint of original place,especially the rural area,this paper compares the differences of the characteristics of household with and without out-migrants,and examines the effects of the characteristics of household on out-migration decision making,and the number of out- migrants.This paper wants to answer this question: what kind of household would be more likely to induce the member to out-migrate.The results testify the assumptions,that is,in Chinese society with family or household as the basic economic unit,individual′s migration decision-making are significantly influenced by not only the individual′s characteristics and macro socio-economic background,but also the characteristics of households.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To investigate the utilization of health services, and to explore the associated factors.METHODS:A total of 960 respondents were recruited using a stratified cluster randomized sampling method; Chi-square, t-test and Logistic regression analysis were utilized for statistical test.RESULTS:Their two-week morbidity rate, visiting rate, non-visiting rate, hospitalization rate were 10.09%, 7.91%, 21.59%, 1.83% respectively, and the average medical cost for each outpatient was RMB 359.54 Yuan and the average cost for each time of hospitalization RMB 4 599.71 Yuan; multivariable regression indicated that their marriage status, medical insurance, two-week morbidity status and working span were significantly associated with the utilization of health services.CONCLUSION:The utilization of health services among young migrants has not met the expectation, particularly the utilization of prevention care and hospitalization services; for the purpose of boosting the health and wellbeing of young migrants, medical insurance system for migrant population should be improved, and the role the community hospital plays must be emphasized.
Housing outcomes of family migrants at the place of destination

Abstract:Nowadays family migration has become the main migration pattern of floating population in China,which may raise new requirements for residential independence,tenure and quality in the cities.For some researchers,the migrant households were generally considered as passive recipients of housing inequality,and the institutional barrier of Hukou were no doubt still the decisive factors for migrants' housing outcomes.However,other researchers start to challenge this perspective,and argue that migrants should be considered as enabling agents with coping strategies in the housing market since the influence of Hukou system in migrants' housing outcomes is declining.Under this context,this paper tries to explore the role of family strategy in family migrants' housing outcomes,and whether this conclusion differentiates among various households.Based on a questionnaire survey which covered 2394 migrants and their households in 12 cities of the Bohai Rim Region,the Yangtze River Delta Region,the Pearl River Delta Region,and the Chengdu-Chongqing Region,this paper uses logistic regression model to explore family migrants' urban housing outcome in terms of housing tenure and quality and the mechanism for this.The result shows,different household arrangements lead to diversification of housing outcome,which means that the ownership and housing quality differs significantly among sole migrants,couple migrants,twogeneration migrants,and three-generation migrants.The three-generation migrant households,as expected,have the highest ownership percentage and residential quality among all types of migrant households,while the sole and couple migrants suffer from the poor residential conditions.This housing outcome should be explained by factors such as socio-economic characteristics,household arrangements,geographic environment,migrants' connection with the original hometown and adaptation to current destination.Especially,when considering the effect of migrants' sense of belonging,plan to settle down in the destination and connection with hometown,the effect of Hukou is weakened.Different household arrangements have different barriers and strategies,which leads to the divergence of housing outcomes.The implication from this research is that the govemments should make gradient regulation policy for the diverse family migrants,and lead them to settle stably step by step.

Abstract:This Research Note employs age data to assess whether China's internal migrants have become more settled since 2010. The aim is to answer the crucial question of whether recent hukou reform initiatives have achieved their goals of improving migrant settlement. We extend a method from existing research that examines two key aspects of settlement – family togetherness and long-term stay of migrants – through analyzing age profiles of migrant stock. Specifically, by scrutinizing age data from the 2010 and 2020 censuses, we evaluate whether the child and elderly dependents of migrants are more engaged in migration and whether migrants growing old can better remain in the destinations. The results show that from 2010 to 2020, the age distribution of migrants became slightly more even across all age groups, yet it was still concentrated in young adults – the overall shape remained largely unchanged. This indicates a small improvement in settlement, which is unsatisfactory given the various hukou reform initiatives aimed at substantially increasing settlement opportunities in the last 10 years. Much greater efforts on hukou reform and support for migrants are needed. Furthermore, our research highlights the utility of age data in assessing the actual extent of migrant settlement, as opposed to the exclusive focus on settlement intentions, which are common in existing studies.

Abstract:While the size of China's mobile population continues to expand, the fertility rate is significantly lower than the stable generation replacement level of the population, and the structural imbalance of human resource supply has attracted widespread attention. This paper uses LPM and Probit models to estimate the impact of house prices on the fertility intentions of the mobile population based on data from the 2018 National Mobile Population Dynamics Monitoring Survey. The lagged land sales price is used as an instrumental variable of house price to mitigate the potential endogeneity problem. The results show that for every 100\% increase in the ratio of house price to household income of mobile population, the fertility intention of the female mobile population of working age at the inflow location will decrease by 4.42\%, and the marginal effect of relative house price on labor force fertility intention is EXP(-0.222); the sensitivity of mobile population fertility intention to house price is affected by the moderating effect of infrastructure construction at the inflow location. The willingness to have children in the inflow area is higher for female migrants of working age with lower age, smaller family size and higher education. Based on the above findings, the study attempts to provide a new practical perspective for the mainline institutional change and balanced economic development in China's economic transition phase.
