Abstract:According with urban economy's rapid development,there is a common characteristic appearing in many China cities which is speed of urbanization in these cities is growing faster and faster.Then,a number of historical culture cities are rethinking a question what is how to making their conservation more effective in progress of modernization in China.This article takes Hangzhou as an example,first,compares two different conservation methods between Hangzhou and Suzhou;then,finds reasons why Hangzhou cannot conserve its historical cultural resources effectively by using the old city rebuilding conservation method;after that,analyses relationship between economic development and urban space structure;finally,deduces conclusion that conservation of a old city must depends on developing of a new city.With contribution of leisure economy development,the historical cultural city-Hangzhou could achieve a wonderful consequence that is the old city feeds on itself.

Abstract:In the process of urbanization,the style conflict between modern residences and traditional residences are serious in a lot of famous historic and cultural cities of China at present. In this paper,the conservation and development of residential characteristic features in Changting is discussed. The current development situation of residential buildings and the influencing factors are analyzed, and it is proposed that the resident's community building committee should be set up,residential housing should be managed based on dividual areas,and integrated development tactics should be carried out to promote style harmonization of modern residences and traditional residences.

Abstract:Heritage tourism-led urban renewal and regeneration has recently become a critical way of creating a city brand, designing tourism destinations, and attracting property developers and investors to cities. However, current practice points to a lack of proper understanding and consideration in preserving and interpreting elements of authentic identity in the Chinese historic urban landscape. In this study, we used the ancient city of Datong, China, under urban regeneration as a case study to explore how urban history and cultural resources are manifested in preserving and reconstructing historic urban landscapes. The methods included in-depth interviews with multiple stakeholders and groups, integrated with the analysis of planning documents and field observations. By categorising and evaluating the research data, we developed a new conceptual framework with applicable measures, contributing to heritage-tourism urban regeneration and shaping place identity in both theoretical and practical aspects. The conceptual framework and its corresponding concepts and measures developed from this research could provide guidelines for academics and practitioners to explore more potential aspects and concepts that focus on the research and development of Chinese cities with historic urban landscapes.

Abstract:Sustainable urban regeneration is an inevitable requirement for promoting high-quality urban development in developing countries. Affected by different natural conditions, cultural background, economic development and other aspects, different cities have different goals and ways of implementing sustainable urban regeneration. Considering that cities in developing countries generally face the problems of overpopulation, financial constraints and urban sprawl, the urgency of classifying and guiding different cities to carry out sustainable urban regeneration in an orderly manner has become increasingly prominent. Therefore, taking China as an example, this study puts forward a city type division method from the perspective of sustainable urban regeneration, taking 'county-level administrative division' as the basic unit, divides cities into five types, and analyzes their spatial differentiation characteristics further. The results show that: (1) there are significant regional differences in the content and characteristics of urban regeneration in China, which are consistent with the distribution characteristics of the 'Hu line'; (2) There is a mismatch between 'administrative planning objectives' and 'urban development status' in some cities in the northeast and central and western regions; (3) There are significant differences in the basis for coordinating urban regeneration especially among different economic sectors, provinces and urban clusters, and the orientation of urban regeneration policies in some cities needs to be adjusted and optimized. The results provide scientific reference and feasible ideas for China and other developing countries to formulate sustainable urban regeneration policies and promote sustainable and coordinated urban development.

Abstract:China is experiencing rapid progress in industrialization and urbanization. Characteristic towns (Tese Xiaozhen) are one of the important drivers for China's urbanization, industrialization and agricultural modernization in the 21st century. Each of the towns has its own characteristics. At present, however, it is unclear for them about (i) what characteristics should be promoted, (ii) how urban land should be planned and (iii) which industry should be focused on. The public infrastructure and services in towns are usually under-developed, compared to cities. This paper first explores the designation of a brand-new type of new towns in China, i.e. “characteristic towns”, to meet the need of the current urbanization in China. The paper focuses on the principles of “agglomeration” and “livability”, in socioeconomic and cultural contexts. This is exemplified by a case study of Zhejiang's version of characteristic towns. The findings suggest that the success of cultivation of towns is closely associated with agglomeration and livability. In the short term, identifying characteristics is the core element in the development. For the longer term, a comprehensive integration of industrial policy and land use policy is needed to ensure continuous capital investment and revenue generation.

Abstract:Nowadays the fast urban sprawl in China has generated huge pressures on conserving the cultural heritages and historic city characteristics.This paper provides the Mountain-Water-City holistic pattern and illustrates the concept of Mountain-Water-City in cultural,functional and aesthetics dimensions,all of which have been widely adopted in traditional Chinese urban planning history for thousands of years.Based on the multi-dimensional Mountain-Water-City spatial unit,it proposes the strategies of historic-cultural environment protection and development at three spatial levels:to establish the artistic structure at the regional level,to maintain and refine the scenery system at the city level,and to create the spirit of place at the site level.

Abstract:At present, the area of urban built-up areas in Shanghai has been effectively controlled, and the once neglected rural landscape has attracted much attention. This study focuses on the methodology of effectively utilizing cultural landscape resources and promoting further harmonious development of urban-rural relations in Shanghai. As a category of cultural heritage, cultural landscape is an indispensable resource for urban development. During the process of urban and rural planning, local cultural landscapes need to be regarded as the driving source of urban development. For a long time, Shanghai, as an international metropolis, has lain particular emphasis on historical relics in the built-up areas of the city. However, since the cultural landscape resources surrounding the built-up areas have been neglected, the image of Shanghai lacks an echo with nature and the countryside. This study examines features of cultural landscapes in Shanghai and puts forward several issues in the conservation and sustainable development of cultural landscape resources, so as to provide the basis for heritage protection, urban and rural planning and tourism planning in Shanghai in the future.

The urban system in most countries is influenced by market forces and enterprises. Abstract:Under the background of "promoting rural revitalization in an all-round way," it is of great significance to study the sustainable development planning strategy of cultural tourism towns to realize rural revitalization. Taking the current situation of the development of cultural tourism towns in Yichang City as an example, this article deeply analyzes the development of cultural tourism towns in Yichang City. It also examines the phenomenon of blindly following the trend and homogenization in the development of rural cultural tourism towns in Yichang, including the hollowing out of town characteristics and the vulnerability of transition relying on a single tourism industry to market fluctuations. The article proposes a good job in the integrated development of cultural tourism towns and urban tourism resources to realize the outstanding characteristics of small towns, tap the potential of the physical industry of cultural tourism towns, do a good job in the cultivation and development of cultural and creative industries, and support the sustainable development of cultural tourism towns through planning strategy. The research results show that adopting a reasonable sustainable development planning strategy, focusing on the scientific planning and construction of cultural tourism towns, can effectively promote the coordinated development of rural and urban areas.

Abstract:In the process of conservation and utilization of historical buildings, relevant stakeholders should adapt to the material and spiritual needs of people in the development of urbanization, and continuously explore their technical, economic and cultural values. This will be in line with the regulations that preserving heritage is preserving history, and preserving the cultural lineage of the city. We should pursue both the preservation of buildings and the continuation of their historical and cultural values. Achieving the unity of social, economic and environmental benefits of urban construction and development is already a common consideration in the world. This article analyzes the relevant cases in France, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Beijing and other places, and discusses the path for the protection of historical buildings, the enhancement of their own value and the coordinated development of the city. And analyze its problems and put forward relevant policy recommendations. Historical buildings should use the advantages of the Internet to broadly consolidate social consensus. Identification and classification of resource-based cities in China

Abstract:Resource-dependent cities are cities whose economic development depends on the exploitation and processing of natural resources. Their transformation and sustainable development are an important area of research on regional industrial development, regional economy and urban development. Since the Chinese government launched a pilot project to transform resource-dependent cities, starting with Fuxin in Liaoning Province in 2001, accurately identifying and classifying China's resource-dependent cities has become a focus of geographical research. Based on previous studies, this paper uses the theory and methods of urban function classification to analyze indicators and threshold values for identifying and classifying resource-dependent cities. It has thus identified 262 cities as being resource-dependent. Looking at the development levels, problems, characteristics and developmental direction of such cities, this paper attempts to establish a comprehensive analytical framework using the two evaluation indicators of resource security and sustainable development. It also creates a model to classify the 262 cities identified as resource-dependent cities into four types: growing cities, mature cities, declining cities and regenerating cities. The different connotations and characteristics of the city types were then analyzed. The results of this research support the delineation of scopes and categories of resource-dependent cities set out in the National Sustainable Development Plan for Resource-Dependent Cities published by the State Council, and they serve as a foundation for formulating policies on planning, classification and guidance.

Abstract:The 21st century can be regarded as an "urban" century. With the rapid development of China's urbanization process, cities have gradually lost their uniqueness because of the tendency to construct cities using similar design principles. In this article, traditional Chinese culture is advocated, (especially Qian Xuesen's Shan-shui City concept), and explained from three aspects: the Natural State, the Picturesque State and the Ideal State. Based on these concepts, the paper advocates the Holistic Design approach and collaboration with other design disciplines. Three city scale projects -Beijing Olympic park, Tiding Fanhe New City and Tangshan Nanhu Eco-city - put this "Shan-shui City" concept into practice.

Abstract:Cultural routes (or cultural itinerary) was the most important concept in the conservation of world heritage in recent years. The article introduce the development of the conservation of cultural routes systematically, and compare the cultural routes concept with “heritage corridor” which have been prevailing in America for years. Based on the introduction and comparison, the article discussed the two concepts in Chinese context of heritage conservation. The article point out the significance for china to use the two concepts as reference in heritage conservation and region planning.

Abstract:China provides a unique social-economic and political context for urban conservation and regeneration within the current trend of modernisation and globalisation. This paper investigates 4 urban regeneration projects conducted in four most internationalised historical Chinese cities from 1989 to 2005, in order to understand how traditional architectural elements are manipulated in these projects. It also examines the roles local governments, developers, designers and local residents played in these projects in the intensification process of the market oriented economy over time. The paper argues that socio-cultural sustainable regeneration of historical urban environments must make places for local people, rather than preserve certain traditional forms as cultural symbols. Tradition must evolve by the collective and traditional forms must be widely used in architectural and urban design with community involvement, in order to achieve real cultural identity and social cohesion.
