Abstract:A great amount of exegeses on ancient Chinese language are explanations of contextual meanings. Duyu's annotations of Zuozhuan contain dozens of "A is just like B". The semantic relations between the explaining word and the word explained can be divided into two classes. One is yitong—near synonym with minor differences; the other is yige—different meanings yet with certain connections. Among the two classes there are various situations, which need to be analysesed case-by-case.

Abstract:This paper argues that we cannot determine with certainty the sequence of the two parts of the Laozi text: "Way" (Dao) and "Virtue" (De). These two parts (pian) were originally written independently by Lao Zi and in an uncertain chronological order. They originally circulated separately, and were later combined differently by various editors. Thus emerged the two Laozi versions: The one with "Way" preceding "Virtue" has dominated the transmission; the alternative order can be retrieved from recently discovered sources such as the Mawangdui Silk Manuscripts and Han Bamboo Slips.

Abstract:Zhang Zhu-po's remarks on Wu Yue-niang have been different from other critics.His total negation of Wu Yue-niang is different from most critics' theories and is beyond the readers' anticipation,which is also distant to the image of Wu Yue-niang in the story.As to this point,he has recognized,why has he made such a remark? This paper,from different perspectives,analyzes the internal origins of the image of Wu Yue-niang by Zhang Zhu-po,with a view to further the understanding of traditional criticism.

Abstract:"Dingzhen" and "……therefore the sage……" are two kinds of common sentence structures in Laozi.The former embodies three inner dimensions: logical causality,time succession and grade of law,which all highlight the supremacy and universality of Tao.The latter constructs two kinds of narrative mode: heaven-man and ancient-present,which are all characteristic of official historians.Synthetically analyzing the two kinds of sentence structure,we find Laozi has transformed the mystical and empirical discourse of official historians into disenchanted philosophical discourse by setting up Tao for the absolute.

Abstract:The debate between Zhuangzi and Huizi has profound epistemological significance, however, the main body of their debate comprises logical inferences and refutations. Therefore, this paper mainly focuses on the logical aspects of the debate. Some scholars have suggested that Huizi's argument is self-contradictory; however, in fact, based on such evaluations of Huizi's argument, we can conclude that Zhuangzi's logic is also self-contradictory. By utilizing modern logical analysis tools, this study reveals what and how the propositions and inferences contained in the language of the debate are articulated accurately and strictly. Moreover, by elaborating on the implicit premises omitted by Zhuangzi and Huizi, the actual logical process of the debate can be restored, and the logical fallacy of clandestine change of argumentative issue are revealed. This study presents clear modern logic analysis of the debate; it can also provide a more reliable logical basis for the discussions of Zhuangzi and Huizi's related philosophical thoughts.

Abstract:In slip 13 of the Laozi yi of the Guodian bamboo slips, the character formed with Mao(矛) and Shah(山) should be identified as Rui(锐), pronounced as Yue(阅), which means "to accommodate". The main idea of this chapter is to say that, we should close all of our sense organs to reject information from the world, and we should try to keep distance between the things in the world and us even in the occasion when we have to use our sense organs. This is consistent with the thought in the whole Laozi yi.

Abstract:In this paper the author aims to explore the philosophical essence presented in Qi Wu Lun of ZhuangZi and discusses some approaches to better understanding the subtleness of the theme and different interpretations of some key concepts in Qi Wu Lun.The author goes further by making a comparative study between some seemingly contradictory concepts presented by Qi Wu Lun and Xiao yao you respectively and reveals a fundamental harmony between them.Finally,the author proposes some reading strategies for understanding of philosophical ideas in ZhuangZi: start with the fables first and then study the inertial articles,the most recommendable of which is to read Qi Wu Lu and Xiao yao you comparatively so as to develop one's concrete and abstract logic reasoning competency.

Abstract:In this article we focus on the famous dialogue between Zhuangzi 莊子 and Huizi 惠子 concerning the question whether or not ren 人 (in particular the shengren 聖人) have qing 情. Most scholars have understood qing in this exchange as referring to "feelings" or "emotions." We take issue with such readings. First, we demonstrate that, while Huizi probably understands qing as something like feelings or emotions, Zhuangzi's view is that having qing is connected with making shifei 是非 judgments whereas having no qing means that shifei has no grip on those ren, especially the shengren. What follows is that the expression wuqing 無情 should not be identified as a "doctrine of nonemotion." Instead, wuqing implies that Zhuangzi advises us to lead a life of tranquility, calmness, and stillness. We show that these peaceful attitudes are associated with the idea of wuwei 無為 in the Zhuangzi.

Abstract:To avoid the one-sidedness and abuse of the rule of xieju (principle of applying a measuring square), ZHANG Taiyan redefines zhong-shu, the Confucian golden rule, as two separate yet complementary principles, the idea of which is most manifestly drawn from Zhuangzi's "Qiwulun" ("Discourse on Making All Things Equal"). Zhang's association of zhong-shu and qiwu is based upon his vision of equality premised on recognition of and respect for differences. In Zhang's reading of the Zhuangzi in light of Yogacara, the crucial "concept matching" (geyi) is the explanation of cheng xin as seeds in the alaya consciousness. Cheng xin in this sense not only refers to the natural pattern of things and so is the basis for inference and deduction, but also serves as the means to deal with the diversity of opinions. In moral practice, Zhang proposes the liang xing approach of his qiwu philosophy: to recognize the equal worth of all beings on one hand, and to take the particular characteristics and desires of individuals into account on the other. Thus, it requires the dual practice of zhong and shu: to acquire firsthand observation through personal experience, and to imagine oneself in the position of the other.

Abstract:This paper is on the relationship between Zi (the monosyllabic Chinese word) and Chinese studies, and meant to a preface to the upcoming book Zi-based Chinese linguistic Study Series. Modern Chinese linguistics since Ma Shi Wen Tong has characteristically denied the importance of Zi as the basic structural unit of the language, and thus has been far off the early established tradition of Chinese classical academic studies. This modernism, featuring an acceptance of a new theory at the expense of our tradition, is clearly inappropriate. In the light of Y.R.Chao, Lü Shuxiang and Wang Li's remarks, the paper addresses such issues as the importance of Zi in Chinese language structure and its relation with studies on linguistic universals and with the two "combinations", i.e. combinations of Chinese and western, traditional and modern linguistics, and offers some tentative ideas on creative theoretical linguistic studies.

Abstract:HAN Kang-bo(thinker of the Eastern Jin Dynasty)proposed the unique theory of Ji li and Tai xu in which he explained the image-number issue conceived in the Yizhuan with ontological theory of metaphysics.HAN eliminated the theoretical contradiction between meaning-pattern Yi and divination and accommodated the spirits by rationality.His theory not only was appropriate for the environmental change of thinking and culture in the Eastern Jin Dynasty but also remedied WANG Bi's Yi-ology.HAN Kang-bo enlarged the scope for interpretation of meaning-pattern Yi and laid WANG Bi and HAN Kang-bo's status of main trend in Chinese Yi-ology history.

Abstract:Liu Wenqi advocated, in his Notes and Examples, ChunQiu Zuoshi Zhuan Jiuzhu Shuzheng, that explanation of Spring and Autumn Annuls must involve corroboration with the Zhouli Rites, which set the study of Zuo Zhuan to its starting point in Han Dynasty. This has traced the origin of the previous commentaries by former Confu-cianists. Meanwhile, it has drawn a clear demarcation line with the study of Gong Yang Zhuang in Han and Qing Dynasties in regard to the true meaning of Confucian classics and research method. Besides, Liu Wemqi further clarified misunderstandings of notes and examples in Du Yu's explanation of Zuo Zhuan. His descendants illustrated the contents of the Zhouli Rites and extended the introductory study of Shu Zheng to three domains of study. Thus constructed the Liu's system of Zuo Zhuan research.

Abstract:The reliability of exegetical conclusion is determined by the efficient demonstration.Some scholars thought that "zhi qi zhang er yun" in the Analects of Confucius means rice cultivating,weeding and culture seedlings,which is not valid for the following reasons: they treated probability as necessity;at that time rice didn’t play a major role;"yun"(weeding) and "zi"(culture seedlings) were not endemic in cultivating."yun" meaning hand weeding in paddy field in Tian Gong Kai Wu can not be used to explain ancient document.Unearthed relics of Han dynasty displayed that there were weeding in the paddy field and weeding by using hoe,it doesn’t accord with linguistic reality asserting that "zhi" can not be taken as "zhi"(put down).Some scholars thought this "zhang" was "li zhang"(plough),which does not hold water because they treated speciality as generality.It is disguised replacement of concept to explain "zhang" as "li zhang".

Abstract:By explanations of origination,development and their fundamental connotations of theories of Zhu-zi and Yang-ming,the modern significations of them will be illustrated.The most vital part of Zhu-zi theory is that of "to obtain knowledge by investigating nature of things",the distinctiveness of which is to do one's best to establish a position for knowledge inquiry activities of people.Minds equaling to sense and acquiring conscience constitute main philosophic propositions,in which "integrating conscience and activities into a whole" shows an important feature of this antilogy.Zhu-zi emphasized the characters of reading and studying,which offers a very good instruction for setting up modern "studying society" and "lifelong education".As for college's general education,the thoughts of Zhu-zi besides those of Confucian's impart the most important sources.Zhu-zi advocated that "own reverence" stands for working attitudes of self-restrained,solemnity and earnest,and diligence and undivided,which still offers important sources to maintain positive ethic for East Asian societies.Yang-ming theory emphasizes practice which embodies "integrating conscience and activities into a whole","tempering oneself by doing things",this kind of philosophic spirits merged with practical philosophy development since 19th century is interlinked well with modern philosophy.The idea of Wang Yang-ming's all things are one merits ecumenical value in terms of human peaceful development and ethic supporting for ecological and environment protection.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new reading of Ruan Ji’s Essay on Zhuangzi.Scholars have argued that Ruan’s essay honored Taoist spontaneity and criticized Confucian moral teachings.However,this paper argues that written around 247,Ruan’s essay actually offered a fresh interpretation of Zhuang Zi’s philosophy in that it considered the idea of equality of all things as the main thread that underlies Zhuang Zi’s thought.Thus Ruan attempted to harmonize the “inner-worldly” Confucian moral teachings and the “other-worldly”Taoist pursuit of spontaneity.In this regard,Ruan’s understanding of Zhuangzi anticipated the interpretations of Xiang Xiu and Guo Xiang on Zhuangzi that came decades later.
