Abstract:We have developed an effective route for obtaining 5-hydroxymethylfurfural with a yield of 92.6 mol% from the dehydration of fructose in N,N-dimethylformamide using a mixture of AlCl3, H2SO4 and H3PO4 as catalyst. The NMR analysis showed the intermediate formed among fructose, AlCl3 and H3PO4 plays an important role in the novel result.

Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) derived from biomass is a versatile platform chemical for producing various degradable polymers, especially polyethylene 2,5-furandicarbox-ylate (PEF). To reduce the high cost of feedstock, fructose instead of expensive 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) was used as the feedstock for producing FDCA in the acetic acid (HOAc) solvent by a one-pot, two-step method. Fructose was first catalytically converted into HMF and 5-acetoxymethylfurfural (AMF) in HOAc over the Amberlyst-15 catalyst. After the separation of only Amberlyst-15, the in situ-formed HMF and AMF were further catalytically oxidized to FDCA by air (oxygen) over homogeneous Co/Mn/Br catalysts following the free-radical chain reaction mechanism. HOAc was not only used as the solvent for the dehydration and following oxidation process but also served as the effective co-catalyst for the dehydration of fructose. The effects of catalyst species, dosage, and reaction temperature on the dehydration process and oxidation temperature on FDCA yield and purity were evaluated systematically. Under the optimized reaction conditions, a total yield of HMF and AMF of 50% and a final FDCA yield of 35% were achieved. Combined with experimental results and theoretical calculation, the reaction mechanism for fructose dehydration side reactions and the HMF and AMF oxidation reactions was proposed correspondingly. The proposed two-step, one-pot method using fructose as the starting material is a promising route for the commercial production of FDCA with the simple operation and viable yield.

Abstract:2,5-Furandimethanol (FDM) is currently produced via a two-step process involving fructose dehydration over inorganic acids (H2SO4 and HCl) and the subsequent hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) with H-2. Because of the separation difficulty and unstable feature of HMF, the direct transformation of hexose to FDM is still challenging yet crucial. In this work, we first reported that formic acid served as both a renewable Bronsted acid and a hydrogen donor for one-pot dehydration-hydrogenation of fructose over a heterogeneous Co catalyst. Under optimal conditions of 170 degrees C for 3 h, 60.2% FDM yield was achieved with full conversion of fructose. Kinetic studies showed that the apparent activation energy (E-a) of the one-pot dehydration-hydrogenation of fructose was 80.5 kJ/mol and indicated that the rate-determining step of the whole process is fructose dehydration. The Co-NC catalyst was reusable and was also capable of gram-scale one-pot dehydration-hydrogenation of fructose.

Abstract:In this study, 1,4-dioxane and tetrahydrofuran are found to be the most suitable solvents for the dehydration of fructose at high concentrations, in which 77.7% and 78.8% yields of 5-hydromethylfurfural (5-HMF) are obtained, respectively, from 20 wt% fructose in the presence of an acid catalyst (5 mol% HCl, 11 wt% water). The high proportion of fructofuranose formed in those polar aprotic solvents and the reversible dimerization to the protective difructose dianhydrides determined by C-13 NMR and HPLC-MS, which stop fructose from excess cross-polymerization into unwanted humins, are considered to be the key factors for the satisfactory 5-HMF yield. Further addition of strong electrophilic molecules such as 5 mol% maleic acid, which consumes 2,5-dioxo-6-hydroxy-hexanal and blocks its reaction with 5-HMF by Michael addition, enhances the yield of 5-HMF to 85.4%.

Abstract:Herein, Cu(NO3)(2)/acetonitrile was proven to be an efficient oxidation system in the oxidation of 5-HMF to DFF in an aqueous solution. After optimization of the reaction conditions, the DFF yield of 97.0% was obtained under the conditions of 1.5 mmol 5-HMF, 1.5 mmol Cu(NO3)(2), 0.48 ml acetonitrile, 10 ml H2O, 80 degrees C, and 18 h. The oxidation system could be recycled at least three times by adding HNO3, which avoided the risk of production of Cu-containing waste. The formation of Cu(CH3CN)(4)(+) in the aqueous solution played an important role in enabling the oxidation of 5-HMF via the redox cycle of Cu2+/Cu+. To further improve the reaction efficiency, a reactive-extraction process was developed by introducing toluene as the organic phase due to its excellent extraction capacity for DFF. As a result, the reaction time was shortened to 8 h, and the highest DFF yield of 98.9% was achieved.

Abstract:In this contribution, readily available 5-methyl furfural (MF) derived from biomass was used as an excellent substitute of the chemically unstable 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) for preparing the commercial precursor 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA). MF was catalytically oxidized by air into FDCA in acetic acid over homogeneous Co/Mn/Br catalysts at 130-170 degrees C. It was found that both the substitute reactivity and the ring chemical stability have a remarkable impact on the yield of aromatic dicarboxylic acids. The effects of reaction temperature, pressure, catalyst composition and concentration, water concentration in the solvent, and substrate/solvent mass ratio on both the main reaction and the side reaction were investigated systematically and thoroughly using HPLC and an online tail gas monitoring system. Under optimized conditions, the oxidation of MF gave 100% conversion of MF and 75.8% yield of FDCA with 99.6% purity. It was also proven that the addition of 200 ppm cerium could work well at low temperatures (130-140 degrees C) for enhancing FDCA selectivity via suppressing the side reactions.

Abstract:This work presents experimental and kinetic modeling studies on fructose dehydration to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) in the solution of mixed acetone and water, catalyzed by hydrochloric acid (HCl). A reaction scheme that added an intermediate was proposed. A corresponding kinetic model that considered the parameters, including temperature (383-423 K), initial substrate concentration (10-100 g/L), and catalyst concentration (5-60 mmol/L), was established, and the influence of solvent ratio (3-19) was also studied. The maximum yield was 91% in the ideal plug flow reactor under the optimized condition (T = 383 K, C-F0 = 10 g/L, C-HCl = 10 mmol/L). The model can well support the delicate reactor design since an industrially accessible HMF production process was proposed in this work.

Abstract:2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), mainly synthesized by the selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), is a biobased monomer for high-performance polymers. In this work, we have a comprehensive investigation on the rapid and highly selective oxidation process of HMF to FDCA in acetic acid (HAc) with Co/Mn/Br catalyst and air as the oxidant. It was found that both aldehyde and hydroxymethyl functional groups of HMF could be first oxidized in the sequential oxidation of HMF to FDCA, but 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) was the main oxidation intermediate. Apart from the side reaction of HMF overoxidation to COx (CO and CO2) and HMF condensation to polymers, a small part of HMF will be further oxidized to maleic acid (MA) and fumaric acid (FA) via the ring-opening reactions under severe conditions because of the instability of furan ring. To reduce the side reactions and maximize the FDCA yield, the effects of temperature, pressure, substrate solvent ratio, catalyst composition and concentration, and water concentration on the main reactions and side reactions of the HMF oxidation were systematically evaluated. Under the optimum conditions, the selectivity of FDCA reached 92% with the total conversion of HMF in less than 20 min at a high mass ratio of substrate and solvent (1/9), and the purity of FDCA exceeded 99.8%. The experimental results provide a great reference and inspiration for the optimization of the HMF oxidation process and the large-scale production of FDCA.

Abstract:5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a high-valuebiomass-derived platform chemical derived from renewablebiomass, which is a great alternative to petroleum-based chemicals;however, it cannot be produced on a large scale at present becauseof the limitation of a low HMF yield and costly production. In thiswork, an experimental study of one-pot production of HMF fromglucose in an acetone-water solvent was conducted. The effects ofinorganic salts (in specific, NaCl) on miscible solvents were studiedbecause inorganic salts could affect the phase structure of solvents.We also study the influence of the ratio between Lewis acid andBronsted acid (L/B) on the dehydration reaction. After parameteroptimization experiments, up to 64.5% HMF yield was obtained at the condition ofC0= 1.25 w/v %,CAlCl3= 1.25 w/v %,CHCl=10mmolmiddotL-1,T= 160 degrees C, ando/a= 80/20, and the optimized L/B was 1.25 kgmiddotmol-1. Finally, an economic and efficient HMFproduction process including HMF purification and catalyst recycling was proposed; the HMF product could be produced andseparated with high recovery (similar to 88%) and purity (similar to 85%) in the process. Ourfindings and analysis would provide support for thechoice of the reaction system and bifunctional catalyst synthesis in the subsequent industrial demonstration development

Abstract:2,5-Furandimethanol (FDM), a promising diol, is produced traditionally via hydrogenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) derived from raw sugars. Because of the costly separation process and the unstable nature of HMF, direct production of FDM from raw sugars, especially polysaccharides, is highly desirable. In this work, we developed a cascade catalytic system (NiCl2/FA/Co-NC) to achieve the one-pot production of FDM from glucose and di/polysaccharides, in which NiCl2 was used as the Lewis acid, N-doped carbon confined cobalt (Co-NC) as the hydrogenation site, and formic acid as both the Bronsted acid and hydrogen donor. Under the optimal conditions of 160 degrees C for 6 h, similar to 60% FDM yield together with full glucose conversion was achieved, and Co-NC was recyclable five times without a noticeable deactivation. Kinetic studies showed that the apparent activation energy (E-a) of glucose conversion in the NiCl2/FA/Co-NC catalytic system was approximately similar to 87.7 kJ mol(-1). More importantly, this new catalytic system is also highly efficient for yielding 40-60% FDM from cheap high fructose syrup and di/polysaccharides in one pot under such mild reaction conditions. We believe that this work can lead a pioneering step forward for raw biomass transformation via multi-step coupling strategies, thus showing great potential for industrial applications.
Highly Efficient Production of 5-Methoxymethylfurfural from Fructose in Dimethyl Sulfoxide/Amberlyst-15 Catalytic System

Abstract:With the dwindling availability of fossil fuel resources and the dramatic increase in demand, 5-methoxymethylfurfural (MMF) obtained from renewable biomass resources has great potential as a fossil fuel alternative. In this work, a high yield (80.5%) of MMF was obtained from fructose catalyzed by Amberlyst-15 with the assistance of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in methanol at 100 degrees C for 10 h. Based on a detailed investigation of the reaction mechanism through the effects of DMSO, Amberlyst-15, reaction time, and reaction temperature on MMF yield and the existence of intermediates proved by FTIR, a two-step pathway was proposed: (1) DMSO and H ion on Amberlyst-15 act as a joint-catalyst [DMSOH](+), facilitating the dehydration of fructose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and (2) [DMSOH](+) assists the etherification of HMF with methanol into MMF, which is the rate-determining step. This finding expands the concept of biomass conversion into biomass fuels and plays a vital role in catalyst screen and design, reaction medium selection, and industrial applications.
Boosting the Acid Sites and Lattice Oxygen Activity of the Fe–Cu Catalyst for One-Pot Producing 2,5-Diformylfuran from Fructose

Abstract:In this work, we developed a novel binary phosphate catalyst FeCuPO x for the one-pot synthesis of 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) from fructose. Under typical reaction conditions, 95% yield of DFF was achieved with a high TOF of 818 h–1. The experiment results and catalyst characterization together indicated that both the Brønsted–Lewis acid sites (B–L) and the Fe–Cu active sites contributed to the high synthetic activity of the catalysts. The effect of acid site demonstrated that the Brønsted acid sites facilitated the conversion of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and the Lewis acid sites promoted the adsorption of the hydroxyl group over the catalytic active centers for further efficient oxidation of HMF to DFF. In the oxidation process, a higher lattice oxygen ratio and better mobility endowed FeCuPO x with better catalytic performance in the oxidation of HMF to DFF with the redox cycle of Fe3+/Fe2+, improved by the redox cycle of Cu2+/Cu+. Moreover, the catalyst exhibited satisfying stability and recyclability, demonstrating great potential for the industrial production of DFF from fructose.

Abstract:This work describes a simple method for the preparation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) by dehydrating fructose in DMSO, either with the use of an affordable catalyst or in a catalyst-free manner. This process can be accompanied, under harsh conditions, by the bromide-catalyzed Kornblum oxidation of the hydroxyl group by the solvent, resulting in the formation of 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF). The optimized techniques presented in this study can serve as a foundation for the production of valuable biobased furanic platform chemicals from renewable sources in any laboratory, stimulating the development of sustainable chemistry and research in related fields worldwide.

Abstract:The catalytic conversion of biomass into high-value chemicals, such as furan derivatives, from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) holds significant importance. In this study, a bifunctional catalyst prepared from phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) and chitosan was developed for the one-pot synthesis of 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) from fructose. This approach offered the advantage of bypassing the solvent consumption and cost associated with HMF separation and purification for DFF production. The catalytic activity of the prepared catalyst primarily originated from the loaded PMA. Under optimized reaction conditions, the catalyst achieved a DFF yield of approximately 60% after a 6-h reaction at 150 °C or a 1-h reaction at 170 °C. Moreover, the catalyst exhibited good stability and reusability. These results highlight the potential of the bifunctional catalyst for efficient and cost-effective conversion of fructose into DFF, enabling practical applications in the production of valuable chemicals from bioresources.

Abstract:The development of safe, economical and highly efficient oxidation systems for the production of chemicals from biomass remains a significant and challenging target. Here, we firstly find a unique air-assisted reaction mechanism for the non-pressurized oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) using dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) as O-donor over CoZrNC-MCM, which affords an exceptional productivity among all non-noble catalysts. The combination of control experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveals that the air-assisted DMSO-oxidation pathway is activated by the co-adsorption of DMSO and O2 on Co-(pyrrolic N-C) pairs of CoNC-MCM. ZrNC species on CoZrNC-MCM will be thermally disintegrated to release ZrO2+ and provide the corresponding cation vacancies that might be able to capture Co atoms to form additional Co-(pyrrolic N-C) active pairs, resulting in the increase of catalytiv activity. The released ZrO2+ is well dispersed over Al-MCM-41 in the form of zirconia, which contributes to the dehydration of fructose to HMF. In this way an one-step approach to synthesizing DFF from fructose is achieved by the cooperation of zirconia and Co-(pyrrolic N-C) pairs over CoZrNC-MCM.

Abstract:The dehydration of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural is the research hotspot of the compre-hensive utilization of biomass resources. Using AlCl3 as the catalyst,the influence of reaction conditions on the dehydration of fructose to 5-hydroxymethylfurfural,especially the addition of different inorganic acids on the catalytic performance of AlCl3 was investigated. Using inorganic acid and AlCl3 as the co-catalyst, the effects of different solvents(1,4-dioxane,N,N-dimethylformamide,2-dimethyl sulfoxide),reaction temperature and the mass ratio of sulphuric acid to phosphoric acid(1: 2、2: 3、3: 2、2: 1)were tested. The results showed that 5-hydroxymethylfurfural yield of 92. 1% was attained under the condition as follows:N,N-dimethylformamide as the solvent,AlCl3 dosage 7. 5 mmol,sulphuric acid concentration 20 mmol·L -1 , phosphoric acid concentration 30 mmol·L - 1 and reaction temperature 120 ℃.

Abstract:5-(Chloromethyl)furfural (CMF), as a new platform molecular, has become a hot topic in the field of biorefinery. Herein, the one-pot conversion of CMF to 2,5-bis(hydroxymethyl)furan (BHMF) in the water phase was demonstrated for the first time. A 91% BHMF yield was obtained over Ru/CuOx catalyst, and BHMF was mainly produced by the consecutive hydrolysis and hydrogenation of CMF with 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) as an intermediate. Kinetic studies revealed that the conversion of HMF to BHMF was the rate-determining step. Remarkably, the characterizations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations further revealed the lower electron density of Ru NPs in Ru/CuOx catalyst, resulting in a larger adsorption energy and a smaller free energy difference for the formation of alcohols. The present findings offered a new pathway for biomass-derived diol production through CMF as a potential source.

2D MOF with Compact Catalytic Sites for the One‐pot Synthesis of 2,5‐Dimethylfuran from Saccharides via Tandem Catalysis

Abstract:One pot synthesis of 2,5‐Dimethylfuran (DMF) from saccharides under mild conditions, is of great importance for the production of biofuel and valuable chemicals. However, the synthesis requires multitudes of active sites and always suffers from slow kinetics due to poor diffusion in most composite catalysts, Herein, metal‐acid functionalized 2D metal‐organic framework (Pd/NUS‐SO 3 H), of ultrathin nanosheet of 3‐4 nm giving compact active sites (Lewis, Brønsted acid sites, and metal sites), was fabricated for the first time based on diazo method for acid modification and subsequent metal loading. This new composite catalyst can give substantial higher yields of DMF than all reported catalysts over different saccharides (fructose, glucose, cellobiose, sucrose, and inulins). Characterization suggests a cascade of reactions including polysaccharide hydrolysis, isomerization, dehydration, and hydrodeoxygenation is taken place with rapid molecular interactions. These results present an ingenious preparation strategy for multifunctional 2DMOF catalysts with powerful concerted catalysis.
Reduced Graphene Oxide with Controllably Intimate Bifunctionality for the Catalytic Transformation of Fructose into 2,5-Diformylfuran in Biphasic Solvent Systems

Abstract:For responding to the rapidly increasing trend of research on biorefinery, a diverse range of furans derived from biomass emerge as versatile platform chemicals for a spectrum of pharmaceutical applications. However, it is a formidable challenge to transform biomass feedstock into valuable furan-based chemicals via complicated cascade reactions. Here, we develop a bifunctional reduced graphene oxide (rGO)-supported catalyst with two controllably intimate active sites (namely Ru species and sulfonic acid groups, respectively) on the graphene sheets. The structural and morphological evolution of the catalyst is characterized by FTIR, Raman, XPS, XRD, SEM, and HR-TEM. This catalyst is employed in a biphasic solvent system for the one-pot conversion of fructose to 2,5-diformyfuran (DFF) which is a high-value pharmaceutical intermediate. We demonstrate that the nanoscale proximity of two active sites and the solvent composition are crucial to the catalytic activity and DFF selectivity in the cascade catalysis. The spatial organization of Ru species and sulfonic acid groups reveals an optimized inter-site distance of 12.5 +/- 2.2 nm for the high catalytic activity. A solvent-influenced kinetic model is established and accurately elaborates the regulatory role of toluene (as the co-solvent) on the reaction pathways. More importantly, this bifunctional catalyst can be recycled for 4 times without significant loss of catalytic activity. Taken together, a deep understanding is highlighted which provides clues on the optimization of multifunctional catalysts and the choice of solvent system in the cascade catalysis which is a general unit operation in chemical engineering processes.
