Relationship Study Between Anorexia of Hyperthyroidism and Hypercalcemia—a Clinical Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract:Objective To study the relationship between anorexia and hypercalcemia in Graves'disease. Methods We studied 17 consecutive patients of untreated hyperthyroidism with anorexia,and 29 patients of untreated hyperthyroidism without anorexia,and compared the patients'age,serum free calcium,liver function and emotional condition,specifically the level of anxiety (using SAS Chinese version)before or/and after antithyroid drug therapy in the two groups. Results The free serum calcium were(1 28±0 08) mmol/L and (1 27±0 08) mmol/L in the group with anorexia(A)and the group(B) without anorexia before the treatmet,was significantly higher than health group,but there was no different between A and B group.The patient number with abnormal liver function or anxiety in A group was more than in B group. Conclusion Our study suggested that the causes of anorexia in untreated hyperthyroidism are complicated.Abnormal liver function,and the level of anxiety are significantly related to anorexia in untreated hyperthyroidism,but hypercalcemia was not confirmed to be related to anorexia in our study.\;
