Abstract:High-level architecture (HLA) based distributed simulation technology is widely used in education, entertainment, surgery training and many other fields as well. Efficient communication is essential to the modern distributed simulation. This paper explores the factors which affect the communication of HLA-based distributed simulation: network topology, communication model and interest mechanism. Also, it presents a practical approach for efficient communication in HLA-based distributed simulation, called HIVE Communication. HIVE Communication employs a three-level network architecture to achieve efficient transmission in large-scale distributed simulation. This presents a special communication model to get high-efficiency transmission according to the different message types. It exploits three levels of message filtering mechanisms to minimize the update messages. A communication performance test environment is proposed to test HIVE Communication. The results are compared with DMSO RTI 1.3 v5 and DVE_RTI v2.0 in aspects of latency, throughput and loss rate. The performance results are given finally.
