Abstract:Objietive To evaluate sympathetic activition change after irbesartan and verapamil sustained release (SR) administration in essential hypertensive subjects, The isometric handgrip test to activite sympathetic nervous system were used. Methods Forty eight patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension were entrolled in and randomly allocated to two groups at the end of a 2-week placebo run-in period, group A (irbesartan, n=24,15H mg·d-1) and group B (verapamil SR, n=24,240 mg·d-1).Isometric handgrip test was carried out at the end of placebo period and active treatment period, recording blood pressure and heart rate at the same time. Results Irbesartan and verapamil SR treatment significantly lowered systolic and diastolic blood pressure (P0.01) for both. Resting blood pressure efficacy did not differ between two therapies (P0.05). Compared with verapamil SR group, irbesartan induced a blood pressure reduction from 30.6±8.69/20.0± 4.51 mmHg to 15.2±5.90/14.3±4.26 mmHg during handgrip test. Isometric handgrip test showed that the changes of blood pressure control on irbesartan and verapamil SR were similar. Conclusion Irbesartan and verepamil SR are effective in treating patients with mild to moderate blood pressure not only at rest but also during a stress event.
