Abstract:Objective To observe the changes in the lymphocyte subpopulations in women treated with uterine leiomyoma receiving Tripterygium Wilfordii Hook .f. (GTW) treatment. Methods Baseline ultrasound examinations of uterine myomas were obtained and repeated three and six months after the treatment. Blood samples were collected in the mid-follicular or mid-luteal phase of the menstrual cycle before initiation of GTW therapy and 3~4 months and 5~6 months after the treatment for determinations of: ① the percentages of the peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets by FCM; ② estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, folliclar-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone and prolactin by RIA. Results There was no significant difference between the patients and controls in the percentages of the lymphocyte subpopulations. After GTW treatment, there were no significant changes in the total number of T cells, T-cells subsets and natural killer cells. Significant decrease in leiomyoma volume was shown in 39 of 65 (60%) patients after 3~4 months of GTW treatment and 28 of 40 (70%) patients after 5~6 months of treatment. The decrease in leiomyoma volume with GTW treatment was time-dependent, being 27.84% in 3~4 months and 51.60% in 5~6 months. Compared with the pretreatment values, GTW treatment induced an increase in mean LH, FSH levels and a decrease in mean E2, P levels. Conclusion This study revealed that the GTW treatment is an effective therapeutic agent for leiomyomas but has reversible inhibitory effect on pituitary-gonadal axis and no adverse effect on cellular immunity.
