Abstract:Based on in-situ observation and analysis in laboratory,soil physical-chemical properties,water and salinity transportation feature in micro scale(a 32-m-long transect) were discussed.Results show that soil distribution pattern in saline soil area was sodic saline meadow soil-shallow columnar sodic alkaline soil-white crust sodic alkaline soil-mid columnar sodic alkaline soil.Sodic alkaline soil lay in micro slope or in micro high plain,and texture of which was silty sub slay-slay-silt-gravel;saline meadow soil lay in the relative low basin,and the main component of which was silt and gravel.Soil physical-chemical properties and micro relief influenced water transportation between soil profile and shallow groundwater.Fluctuation of groundwater was pretty correlated with precipitation transportation in saline meadow soil profile.Shallow basin(sodic saline meadow soil) became run-off sink.Frozen-thawing action was an important factor for soil salinity accumulation in Songnen plain.The frozen layer of sodic saline meadow soil became shallow aquifer sink in frozen period.A great deal of aquifer water transported and stored(soil water content was up to 50%) in frozen layer of saline meadow soil.And that might be an important reason for the shallow groundwater level abruptly descending during frozen season.Under the influence of freezing action,salinity transported from sub-layer to frozen layer of alkaline soil in surface and accumulated there.In thawing season,accumulation of salinity in surface aggravated saline degree.
Experimental Study on Effect of Soil Salinity on Electro-Osmotic Dewatering in Soft Clay

Abstract:A one-dimensional laboratory test program is conducted to study the effect of soil salinity on electro-osmotic dewatering in soft clay.Five indexes including discharge,dewatering rate,coefficient of energy consumption,reduction in water content and electro-chemical reaction are compared to analyze the electro-osmotic characters of different saline clays.The results show that the soil salinity has obvious effect on the electro-osmotic dewatering in soft clay and there is an optimal salinity for some type of clay.A higher salinity will lead to larger energy consumption,more anode corrosion and larger variation of pH value,while a lower salinity is better for drainage and reduction of water content.Moreover,there is some quantitative relationship between the coefficient of energy consumption and the soil salinity,and percent of anode corrosion and ration of drainage rate to current intensity are similar to coefficient of energy consumption.It may provide some reference for judging the suitability of electro-osmotic dewatering in practice.

Abstract:Salts have been widely reported to exist in loess and play an important role in the soil mechanical behavior. In recent years, as several land creation megaprojects have been undertaken on the Chinese Loess Plateau, the salt migration paths have been influenced by large-scale loess fill, and land subsidence has become a major new geohazard in the loess fill area. Thus, it is crucial to elucidate the compressibility of remolded loess under various salt concentrations. In the present work, Lanzhou and Xi’an loess samples were selected, and the original soils and some artificially graded soils were prepared for odometer tests after various treatments with soluble or insoluble salts. The results revealed a positive but limited effect of soluble salts in reducing the compressibility of loess, while the compressibility could be significantly reduced by adding an insoluble salt. Furthermore, the effect of the insoluble salt was related to the soil grading features. The soil structure could be strengthened more effectively when it was well graded and possessed a high clay content. The obtained results demonstrate that introducing appropriate amounts of insoluble salt and clay particles into remolded loess represents an effective approach for reducing the risk of land subsidence.

Abstract:Mainly using the water salt dynamic change as the clue,this paper respectively summarized the influence factors of stock reduction and the factors causing salt increment,and aimed at the analysis of literature on influence factors of soil salinity,and in order to clarify the mechanism of the change of soil salinity,analyze the relationship between various factors.By the reorganization of literature,we found that the main influence factors of soil salt:precipitation,drainage,evaporation,landform cover,irrigation,fertilization,and large-scale projects,and each factor was not iso-lated to influence the distribution of soil salt but influenced and restricted it mutually.

Abstract:Salinization is one of the most serious land degradation problems facing world. Salinity results in poor plant growth and low soil microbial activity due to osmotic stress and toxic ions. Soil microorganisms play a pivotal role in soils through mineralization of organic matter into plant available nutrients. Therefore it is important to maintain high microbial activity in soils. Salinity tolerant soil microbes counteract osmotic stress by synthesizing osmolytes which allows them to maintain their cell turgor and metabolism. Osmotic potential is a function of the salt concentration in the soil solution and therefore affected by both salinity (measured as electrical conductivity at a certain water content) and soil water content. Soil salinity and water content vary in time and space. Understanding the effect of changes in salinity and water content on soil microorganisms is important for crop production, sustainable land use and rehabilitation of saline soils. In this review, the effects of soil salinity and water content on microbes are discussed to guide future research into management of saline soils.

Abstract:series of electro-osmotic consolidation laboratory tests was conducted to investigate the influence of soluble salt on the electro-osmotic consolidation of soft clay. Remolded soil samples with different salinities of KCl, NaCl, and CaCl 2 were tested in the modified electro-osmosis oedometer experimental system. Final water content, vane shear strength, and pH value of test soil samples were analyzed by monitoring the changes in the electric current, volume of drainage, and vertical settlement during the tests. The results showed that addition of soluble salts can improve the electro-osmotic consolidation of soft clay. However, excessive salinity will reduce the efficiency of electro-osmotic consolidation. The optimal salinity of the soluble salt was determined for each type of salt. Moreover, an improved consolidation efficiency can be achieved by using CaCl 2 rather than KCl or NaCl.

Abstract:Soil salinity (high levels of water‐soluble salt) and sodicity (high levels of exchangeable sodium), called collectively salt‐affected soils, affect approximately 932 million ha of land globally. Saline and sodic landscapes are subjected to modified hydrologic processes which can impact upon soil chemistry, carbon and nutrient cycling, and organic matter decomposition. The soil organic carbon (SOC) pool is the largest terrestrial carbon pool, with the level of SOC an important measure of a soil’s health. Because the SOC pool is dependent on inputs from vegetation, the effects of salinity and sodicity on plant health adversely impacts upon SOC stocks in salt‐affected areas, generally leading to less SOC. Saline and sodic soils are subjected to a number of opposing processes which affect the soil microbial biomass and microbial activity, changing CO2 fluxes and the nature and delivery of nutrients to vegetation. Sodic soils compound SOC loss by increasing dispersion of aggregates, which increases SOC mineralisation, and increasing bulk density which restricts access to substrate for mineralisation. Saline conditions can increase the decomposability of soil organic matter but also restrict access to substrates due to flocculation of aggregates as a result of high concentrations of soluble salts. Saline and sodic soils usually contain carbonates, which complicates the carbon (C) dynamics. This paper reviews soil processes that commonly occur in saline and sodic soils, and their effect on C stocks and fluxes to identify the key issues involved in the decomposition of soil organic matter and soil aggregation processes which need to be addressed to fully understand C dynamics in salt‐affected soils.

Abstract:Soil salinization is one of main ecological environmental problems in Songnen Plain.Groundwater depth and mineralization have an important influence to the salinization happening and the water-salt transport of saline-sodic soil.This research studied the water-Salt dynamics in the condition of different groundwater tables through field experimentation in Da'an Sodic Land Experiment Station of China,and the law of water-salt movement was discussed.Through the analysis of soil water content and salinity,it was found that the degree of soil salinization was more seriousduring experiment.The shallower groundwater tables,the smaller the changes of soil volumetric water content in soil profile.Because of precipitation and evaporation,the variety extentof soil water content above 80cm depth is great,and the variety extentof soil water content above 40cm depth was obvious during experiment(from June to October).Soil salinity and main ion content(Na+、HCO3) is biggest at the depth of 60cm or 100cm,and in the action of precipitation and evaporation,soil salinity and main ion content trend of high-low-high during experiment(from June to September).

Abstract:The effects on the physical and chemical properties of two kinds of improved methods,topsoil mixed and sludge covering,were studied using dewatered sludge as saline-alkali soil ameliorant.The results of field improvement experiment for two years show that with the dewatered sludge usage of 10 kg·m-2,the mixed treatment was much better than the covering treatment;the soil bulk density was effectively reduced by ca 25%;the soil exchange sodium percentage was reduced more than 10%;the soil organic matter content doubled;the nitrogen and phosphorus content in the soil increased.Heavy metal concentrations in soil were below the Soil Environmental Quality Standard(GB15618-1995)(Dry land soil pH 7.5,secondary standard) and existed in residual form.Except the As activity became stronger,the other heavy metals tended to be more stable.

Abstract:In this paper, the effect of salt (Na 2 SO 4 , NaCl) on the clay Atterberg limits and shear strength is revealed by using volumetric flask test and triaxial shear test, and the macroscopic mechanical performance results of the Atterberg limits and triaxial shear test reveal the mechanism of salt solution's effect on the evolution of the deterioration of the microscopic pore structure of the soil body based on the perspective of microscopic pore characterization by using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) scanning and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The results show that in Na 2 SO 4 solution and NaCl solution, the decrease of double layer thickness and the increase of PH value caused by the increase of cation concentration are the main reasons for the gradual decrease of soil Atterberg limits, adsorbed bound water (ABW) content and shear strength. In addition, when the cation concentration is the same, has a greater barrier effect like semi-permeable film than Cl − , which makes the double layer thickness of Na 2 SO 4 solution thinner than NaCl solution, the Atterberg limits and ABW content is further reduced; Meanwhile, has greater intergranular repulsion on the particle surface compared to Cl − , forming a larger pore structure further deteriorating the soil structure and reducing the soil shear strength. It provides more support for studying the effect of salt on the physical and mechanical properties of clay.

Abstract:Due to the high salt content and pH value, the structure of saline-sodic soil was deteriorated, resulting in decreased soil fertility and inhibited soil element cycling. This, in turn, caused significant negative impacts on crop growth, posing a major challenge to global agriculture and food security. Despite numerous studies aimed at reducing the loss of plant productivity in saline-sodic soils, the knowledge regarding shifts in soil microbial communities and carbon/nitrogen cycling during saline-sodic soil improvement remains incomplete. Consequently, we developed a composite soil amendment to explore its potential to alleviate salt stress and enhance soil quality. Our findings demonstrated that the application of this composite soil amendment effectively enhanced microbial salinity resistance, promotes soil carbon fixation and nitrogen cycling, thereby reducing HCO 3 − concentration and greenhouse gas emissions while improving physicochemical properties and enzyme activity in the soil. Additionally, the presence of CaSO 4 contributed to a decrease in water-soluble Na + content, resulting in reduced soil ESP and pH by 14.64 % and 7.42, respectively. Our research presents an innovative approach to rehabilitate saline-sodic soil and promote ecological restoration through the perspective of elements cycles.

Abstract:According to measured soil salt elements,dynamical changes of soil salt contents, conductivity and dominating ions in soil sections in different seasons were analyzed.Distributionsof every ion content in vertical soil section in different seasons were analyzed statistically and uniformityand transferenceof these ions in soil as well as their variationalreasons were studied.Through correlative matrix based on main components of different depth of soil in autumn,it was found that ions showed close correlations among each other except SO_42-,and the relations between soil salt content and main ion HCO_3-in different seasons were analyzed using linear regression.The error between calculated and actual values was comparativesmall,so ions content could be ascertained based on soil salt contents,SO_42-content could be estimated roughly through soil salt content and other ions.Studies of soil salt dynamics in saline-sodic soil in different seasons provided scientificbasis for the improvement and control of salinized and alkalinesoil in Songnen plain.
Effects of Combined Application of Organic and Inorganic Fertilizers on Physical and Chemical Properties in Saline–Alkali Soil

Abstract:To mitigate the issues of severe farmland soil salinization, the environmental degradation stemming from the overuse of chemical fertilizers, and suboptimal soil composition, a study was conducted to investigate the influence of different types and ratios of organic fertilizers on the physical and chemical attributes of saline–alkali soil. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between different types and proportions of organic fertilizers, soil moisture, organic fertilizer application rates, organic carbon molecular structure, and the soil environment in saline–alkali soils. Reducing the application of chemical fertilizers and substituting them with organic fertilizers can improve the soil quality of saline–alkali lands. The results indicated that replacing a part of the urea with organic fertilizer in saline–alkali farmland reduced the soil salinity by 11.1 to 22.8% in the 0–60 cm soil layer, decreased the soil pH by 0.11 to 1.52%, and increased the soil redox potential (Eh) values by 2.5 to 4.3% in the 0–20 cm layer of the mild and moderate saline–alkali soils. It also decreased the accumulation of the soil organic matter (OM) during the growing season. Compared to commercial organic fertilizers, natural organic fertilizers increased the accumulation of the soil soluble carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON), resulting in less soil salinity accumulation. When commercial organic fertilizer was applied in a 1:1 ratio with inorganic fertilizer, the salt accumulation was minimized. Compared to conventional fertilization, organic fertilizer reduced the accumulation of the NH4+-N (ammonium nitrogen) and NO3−-N (nitrate nitrogen) in the soil by 3.1 to 22.6%. In comparison to conventional chemical fertilizers, the application of organic fertilizer in the mild and moderate saline–alkali soils increased the accumulation of the DOC, DON, microbial biomass carbon (MBC), microbial biomass nitrogen (MBN), and microbial quotient during the grain-filling stage. Specifically, it increased the DOC, DON, and DOC/DON by 12.7 to 26.7%, 12 to 59.3%, and 15.2 to 35.5%, respectively. The application of commercial organic fertilizer in the mild saline–alkali soils increased the MBC, MBN, MBC/SOC, and MBN/TN by 37.1, 65.6, 36.7, and 4.7%, respectively. Through analyzing the relative proportions of soil surface organic carbon functional groups during the grain filling period, we observed that, after the application of organic fertilizer, the OM in the mildly salinized soils primarily originated from terrestrial plant litter, whereas, in moderately salinized soils, the OM was mainly derived from microbial sources.

Abstract:In recent years, with the increasing frequency of human engineering activities, the phenomenon of sodium sulfate erosion has been widely observed in the Loess Plateau. This not only leads to difficulties in land reclamation but also affects human health, posing a significant risk to the investment environment in the Northwest region of China. In this study, three types of loess were treated with sodium sulfate to prepare remolded soil samples with salt content levels of 0%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0%, and 2.5%. Observations and tests were conducted at multiple scales. The results indicate significant differences in the structural characteristics of the three types of loess under the influence of sodium sulfate. The higher the salt content in the loess, the greater the degree of structural damage. Subsequently, macroscopic mechanical properties were determined through direct shear tests, and it was found that as the salt content in the loess increased, the strength decreased. The resulting macroscopic mechanical properties showed a strong correlation with the microstructural characteristics. This study provides valuable insights for soil and water conservation and geological disaster prevention in the Loess Plateau region.

Abstract:By in-situ observation and analysis in laboratory,the thermal dynamic structure of sodic saline soil and its influence on the water and salinity transportation were discussed.Results showed that the soil dynamic gradient was the key inducing factor and motivity for water and salinity transportation.The dynamic structure in frozen season appeared to be cold frozen layer-frozen fringe-warm layer,and warm layer-frozen fringe-cold frozen layer-frozen fringe-warm layer in thawing period.Impulse by thermal dynamic gradient and moisture potential gradient,shallow groundwater accumulated in frozen layer.Due to the difference of soil type,the component and properties of frozen soil body were different obviously.Saline meadow soil and saline soil became the accumulation sink of shallow ground water,where vast groundwater transported and stored,and the moisture in 0-70 cm layer increased significantly(maximal water content reached 60%).White crust sodic alkaline soil and sodic meadow saline soil became the accumulation sink of salinity.And salinity content in 0-40 cm layer enriched most significantly.The vast salinity accumulation in surface layer resulted in the saline degree gradually aggravated in thawing season.

Abstract:<p>Presence of salt increases the system complexity of multi-phase oil-contaminated soil. The coastal area of Tianjin, China, is a representative zone full of oil-contaminated soil with salt. By considering initial water content, oil content and dry density, this paper focuses on soil-water reaction and mechanical strength to investigate effect of salt on oil-contaminated soil. Application prospect of solidified oil-contaminated saline soil is also analysed. Results indicate that there is a reverse moisture absorption competition between oil and salt, and the liquid limit and plasticity index of the oil-contaminated soil with salt are lower than those without salt. Salt increases the water repellency and leads to a higher water content of low-density soil in the desorption process. The soil-water characteristic curve of the oil-contaminated soil increases in a quadratic-parabola under the salt saturation and supersaturation. With salt, the curves of the maximum dry density and the optimal water content show poor symmetrical distributions. When the oil content is more than 8%, salt on the strength of oil-contaminated soil shows a significant effect. Based on solidification of lime and fly ash, the strength of oil-contaminated soil with salt increases by 17.9-5.7 times, which meets requirements for engineering applications (like subgrade filler). It is concluded that solidification is an effective treatment to clean contamination for oil-contaminated soil with salt.</p>

Abstract:To study the influence of the three soluble salt ions of Mg2+, Cl−, and SO42− on the strength of salt-rich cement soil, an unconfined compression test was conducted on cement soil with different curing times to study the effect of the content of soluble salt ions on the strength of cement soil. X-ray diffraction and environmental scanning electron microscopy were used to study the influence of soluble salt ions on the microstructure and chemical composition of salt-rich cement soil and to reveal the mechanism of interaction between soluble salt ions and cement soil from macro and micro perspectives. The results show that the Mg2+, Cl−, and SO42− soluble salt ions have distinct adverse effects on the strength of cement soil samples. Moreover, with the increase in the content of soluble salt ions, the adverse effects become more apparent. The main reason for this phenomenon is that the high content of soluble salt ions consumes C–S–H and C–A–H gels and generates M–S–H, M–A–H, and a large number of crystals. M–S–H and M–A–H dispersed in C–S–H and C–A–H gels can reduce the cementing force of cement soil and the strength of salt-rich cement soil.
