Abstract:The substitution effects on the different sites in YBa2Cu3O7-y were investigated experimentally. It is shown that there are two type mechanisms which affect the T(c) of samples. Namely the substitution outside CuO2 plane changes the mobile carrier concentration and the substitution of Cu(II) within CuO2 planes leads to destroying of the magnetic ordering, producing magnetic pair-breaking. Both of them determine the T(c) of the systems directly.

Abstract:The relation of crystal structure, oxygen content, normal state resistivity with. temperature and superconducting critical temperature of Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3-xMxO7-δ(M = Fe, Ni) systems have been studied. In comparison with YBa2Cu3-xMxO7-δ (M = Fe,Ni) systems, it is found that the superconducting Tc of Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3-xFexO7-δ system is remarkably higher than that of YBa2Cu3-xFexO7-δ system with the same x value. On the contrary, the Tc of Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3-xNixO7-δ system is lower than that of YBa2Cu3-xNixO7-δ system. These results show that the variation of the carrier concentration (nH) due to Ca and Fe substitutions has been compensated and the sharp decreases of nH and Tc are prevented when Ca and Fe simultaneously substitute for Y and Cu(I). But in the case of Ca and Ni simultaneous substitutions, the compensation of the carrier concentration is not important and the correlation of Ca and Ni substitutional effects is weak. We suggest that the carrier concentration is an essential factor to determine Tc when the element substitution occurs out of the CuO planes, such as in Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3-xFexO7-δ system, but the pair-breaking effect is more important when Ni2+ ions substitute mainly into Cu(II) sites in Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3-xNixO7-δ system and Tc is directly suppressed by the pair-breaking effect.
Effect of the Ba Vacancy on the Flux Pinning in YBa X Cu 3 O 7-Δ System

Abstract:A series of Y123 single phase samples with various Ba vacancy concentration was prepared by making their Ba contents deviate from the stoichiometric composition. The measurements of their structure, superconductivity and flux pinning behaviour were systematically carried out. It is found that, compared with YBa2Cu3O6.96 sample, the strength of the flux pinning in YBaxCu3O7-δ (1.8 ≤ x<2.0) samples is increased, and that there is an optimum value of Ba vacancy concentration for the maximum flux pinning force density. The possible origin of the flux pinning centers to determine the flux pinning behavior at higher field is discussed in detail. We suggest that the flux pinning effect at lower field may stem from the interaction between the vortex and the surfaces of grains, and that the flux pinning mechanism at higher field belongs to the core interaction.

Abstract:Superconductors of type YBa2Cu3-xMxO7-y(My=V,Nb,Ta;x=0.0~0.7) have been prepared. No phase-transition from orthorhombie to tetragonal for x≤0.6 were found by X-ray diffractometry. The lattice parameters of the system vary with the number of x. The D.C. resistivities and the values of Hall effect measured at room temperature showed a progressive increase, but the concentration and the mobility of the carrier decreased gradually with the increase of x. This reveals that the partial substitution by the element of the V B group affects the electronic structure of the superconductor. The change of the electronic structure has been discussed in terms of the crystal field theory.

Abstract:Various phenomena induced by iron cation substitution for copper in high-Tc superconductor are discussed. Fe cations are substituted for both Cu(1) and Cu(2) sites, but the substitution is preferentially taking place on Cu(1) chain sites atx<3%. The Fe cations at Cu(1) chain sites exhibit anisotropic vibration. Three different types of oxygen coordinations of Fe(1) cations are identified by the point-charge model. The calculation indicates that Fe3+ are present in tetrahedral, pyramidal, and distorted octahedral coordinations.

Abstract:The crystal structure, oxygen content, resistance, Hall effect and superconducting crkical temperature of YBa2Cu1-xCox(Cu1-yZny)2Oz system (0≤x, y≤0.1) have been studied. It is found that with increase of Co and Zn contents, the transformation from superconducting metal with orthorhombic structure to non-superconducting semiconductor with tetragonal structure occurs. At the same time, the Tc and the carrier density nh decrease sharply. The effects with Co and Zn doping simultaneously are not simply additive. With increase of Co and Zn concentrations, there is a strong coorelation between Co doping on Cu(l) and Zn on Cu (2) sites. The experimental results show that the coupling between Cu-O planes and Cu-O chains gives much influence on the electronic transport properties in normal states and superconductivity. The characteristics of the hole carriers and its dependence on Tc in 123 phase compounds are also dicussed.

Abstract:Different temperature quenched YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7−δ samples have been investigated by means of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS). The binding energy shift and the shape variation of Y3d and Ba3d 5/2 show some correlation with superconductivity of the samples. It is suggested that the superconductivity of Y-based oxides may come from the cooperative effect of the components other than from the CuO 2 layers or Cu-O chains only.

Abstract:The study of the twin domain structure of YBa2Cu3O7−x superconductor synthesized by coprecipitation method has been carried out by using the transmission electron microscopy. It was found that the twin domain boundary was parallel to the (110) lattice planes. The twin domain is designated as a 90° one. The same twin structure exhibited different characteristics of spot splitting in its selected area eletron diffraction patterns (SADP) when it was irradiated in different incidence directions. The experimental results were satisfactorily consistent with the theoretical calculation. The mechanism of the formation of 90° twin domain has also been discussed. The phase transformation from tetragonal to orthorhombic taking place in YBa2Cu3O7−x ceramics during cooling is considered to be of the “Martensite”.

Abstract:A systematic study of structure, superconductivity, and magnetic properties of (Y1−xGdx) Ba2Cu3O7−y was carried out. The susceptibility of YBa2Cu3O7−y above Tc is nearly independent of temperature. For all Gd-substituted samples, Gd exhibite the same effective magnetic moment of 7.75 μB. Antiferromagnetic ordering temperature is 2.3K and 1.7K for x=1.0 and 0.8, respectively. Antiferromagnetic ordering was not observed for x ≤ 0.6 down to 1.5K.

Comparison of the observed valence band spectrum with the theoretical spectrum of Mattheiss is given. The core level spectrum of Ba 3d5/2 was examined. Abstract:We have studied two kinds of superconducting samples of Tc about 90K with nominal compositions Ba 3 Y 2 Cu 5 O 12+x and Ba 0.5 Y 4.5 Cu 5 O 12+x , respectively, by means of convergent beam electron diffraction (CBED) and selected area electron diffration (SAED) in more detail. The common phase has been found to be a pseudotetragonal superstructure based on a cubic perovskite subcell of a=0.39 nm. Its lattice parameters are a=a p , c=3a p and its space group is Pmmm. This phase is considered to be responsible for the superconductivity at about 90K. This is the major phase in Ba 3 Y 2 Cu 5 O 12+x , but the minor phase in Ba 0.5 Y 4.5 Cu 5 O 12+x . The lattice parameters and the symmetry of the other phases in Ba 0.5 Y 4.5 Cu 5 O 12+x have also been determined.
Electronic structure and x-ray magnetic circular dichroism of YBa2Cu3O7/LaMnO3 superlattices from first-principles calculations

Abstract:The origin of x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) at the Cu L2,3 edge in YBa2Cu3O7/La(1-x)Ca(x)MnO3 superlattices is revealed by performing first-principle electronic structure calculation using fully-relativistic spin-polarized linear muffin-tin orbital and projected augmented plane wave methods. We show that the XMCD spectra at the Cu L2,3 edges are proportional to the difference of the densities of majority- and minority-spin Cu 3z2-1 states. Although the Cu 3z2-1 states lie well below the Fermi level, a small number of majority-spin 3z2-1 holes is created by the Cu 3z2-1 - O p_z - Mn 3z2-1 hybridization across the interface. Even this tiny number of holes is sufficient to produce appreciable Cu L2,3 XMCD. The robustness of this conclusion is verified by studying the influence of doping, atomic relaxation, correlation effects, and antiferromagnetic order in a CuO2 plane on the XMCD spectra.

Abstract:Two resistance transitions have been observed on a Y-Ba-Cu-O film, one occurred in the region from 120 K to room temperature, and another always at 90 K. Experiments of both tiny magnetic torsion balance and a.c. susceptibility has shown that the large drop of resistance at high temperature was accompanied by ferromagnetism ordering, while the jump of resistance occurred near 90 K is a superconducting transition. The authors think that the ferromagnetism ordering occurred at high temperature is related to full ordering of the oxygen vacancies and the ratio of Cu 3+/ Cu 2+.

Abstract:The YBa2Cu3O7−x undergoes order-disorder phase transitions between orthorhombic and tetragonal structure. This transition modifies both the long-range and short-range order order of the CuO plane as a function of composition (7−x). This affects thermodynamic quantities such as the order parameter, entropy, and phase diagram as well as lattice parameters. These quantities are calculated with the Kikuchi approximation. The results are in good agreement with experiment.

Abstract:Superconductor-Insulator transition and superconductivity have been studied by the measurements of resistivity, specific heat, XPS, a.c.magnetic susceptibility and X-ray diffraction in Ba–Y–Cu–O system. The experimental results show that the S-I (superconductor-insulator) transition which might be driven by the electrons occurs near x=0 and the high electronic density of states at Fermi level usually associated with the high Tc in this system. A λ-type phase transition which is probably related to the antiferromagnetism was also observed near 12K.

Abstract:Two-phase polycrystalline powder mixtures of YBa2Cu3O7−δ (YBCO) and xBaCuO2 (x=0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3) were prepared by solid reaction. The Rietveld refinements of X-ray powder diffraction data show that BaCuO2 addition was successfully produced in superconductor YBCO and the unit-cell parameters of YBCO reach a maximum at x=0.05. The critical current density (Jc) also reaches a maximum at x=0.05 and then decreases sharply with increasing amount of BaCuO2. The change of Jc as a function of x was found to be similar to those of the unit-cell parameters. The characteristic behavior of Jc may come from the structure-parameter change of YBCO caused by BaCuO2 addition.

Abstract:An explanation of the closely related temperature dependences of both charge and spin excitations in the CuO2 plane for underdoped YBCO systems is presented. The spin pseudogap and the anomalous temperature dependences of the in-plane resistivity and the optical conductivity observed in these underdoped compounds are suggested to follow from the energy difference between the chemical potential and the energy of hole quasiparticles at the van Hove singularity (vHs). The numerical results based on the quasiparticle spectrum calculated by Dagatto et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 74 (1995) 310] are in good agreement with experiments.
