Abstract:Objective To evaluate preliminary effects of using intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) on the treatment of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC).Methods Thirteen NSCLC patients were treated with IMRT (IMRT Group) and the irradiation dose was delivered at 2~6Gy per fraction of 3~5 days per week. Another 28 patients were treated with the conventional radiation therapy as the control. Results The response rates (CR+PR) of the IMRT group and the conventional radiation group were 92.3% and 53.6%, respectively(P0.05). The acute radiation esophagitis in the IMRT group was 23.0% and in the conventional radiation group it was 46.4%. The radiation pneumonitis in the IMRT group was 23.0% and in the conventional radiation group it was 42.9%(P 0.05).Conclusion The preliminary results for the study are promising, which shows that IMRT can improve the effects locally. However, the effects for a long-term survival need further study.
