Abstract:Using spin-unrestricted MS-X_α method, the authors have calculated the electronic structure of the complex ion (CrO_4)~(5-) and obtained the one-electron eigenvalues, eigenfunctions and the spin polarization splittings.Using the transition state theory, we have determined the ground states and calculated the energies of some optical transition and charge transfer transitions.The effects of the distance of Cr-O have also been studied.

Abstract:In this payer, the sulfur Is and oxygen Is near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectra of (SO + 2O)/Cu(100) are studied by the multiple-scattering cluster (MSC) method. The cause of the resonances in the NEXAFS spectra of (SO + 2O)/Cu(100) is revealed. The same adsorption structure as in a SEXAFS study is obtained. The analysis shows that the pi* orbital breaks into two levels which shift toward higher energy due to the interaction between SO and the substrate. The low unoccupied orbitals of (SO + 2O)/Cu(100) are examined by a discrete variational (DV)-X-alpha study, which demonstrates the molecular orbital properties of the resonances in NEXAFS spectra of the adsorption system and supports the results of MSC calculation.

Abstract:We report the spin-polarized as well as non-spin-polarized band structure calculations of CrO2 based on the local spin-density approximation of the density functional theory. Our result shows that the Fermi level of magnetic CrO2 is located in an insulating gap in the minority-spin bands between oxygen p and chromium d states with "half-metallic" behavoir. The spin moment is 2 mu(B) per Cr atom, in good agreement with experiment. The densities of states at Fermi level N(E-F) are 1.85 and 6.0 states/eV per CrO2 formula unit for spin-polarized and non-spin-polarized cases, respectively These calculated parameters have remarkable improvements compared with previous calculations. We also conclude from our calculation that the specific-heat parameter gamma is about 4.49 mJ/(K(2.)mole) for CrO2, which is quite close to experimental data.

Abstract:The clusters InxO (x = 2, 3) and In4O0/—1 arestudied using density functional theory (B3PW91). The global minima contain linear di-coordinated, T-shape tri-coordinated, and planar tetra-coordinated oxygen atoms for In2O, In3O, and In4O, respectively. 18-valence electrons contribute to square structure of In4O. Excitingly, 19-valence electron in [In4O]– contains tetra-coordinated oxygen. Molecular orbitals analysis reveals that delocalized π-bonding and σ-bonding orbitals stabilize the planar tetra-coordinated bonding of oxygen. In addition, the stability becomes worse with a decrease in coordination number.

Abstract:In this article we have studied the surface structure, relaxation, and oxygen absorbed c(2 x 2) Cu(001) surface by using ab initio projector augmented wave and Car-Parinello method. It is concluded that the bond length between oxygen and surface Cu atom is 0.194nm which yields a perpendicular distance of 0.069nm from O to Cu(S). The absorption of oxygen produces a hybridized band and yields the well localized surface states at 6.7 eV below E-F. The calculated work function for this absorbed surface is 5.29 eV. We also calculate the scanning tunneling microscope images in the Tersoff-Hamann approach and make comparison with available experimental observations.

Abstract:The structures, binding energies and vibrational frequencies of the CS2–XO− anions (X=C, N and O) have been studied using the B3LYP method at the 6-311+G(d) level of theory. Different stable structural isomers were found, including covalently bonded compounds and ion–molecule complexes. The covalently bonded anions are coordinated between the C and X atoms, while the ion–molecule complexes are coordinated between the S and X atoms. The covalently bonded anions were predicted to be more stable than the ion–molecule complexes.

Abstract:Spin-polarized DFT has been used to perform a comprehensive study of the geometric structures and electronic properties for isolated M4X4 nano-clusters between their two stable isomers - a planar rhombus-like 2D structure and a cubane-like 3D structure with M = Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu ; X = O, S. These two structural patterns of the M4X4 clusters are commonly found as building blocks in several poly-nuclear transition metal complexes in inorganic chemistry. The effect of the van der Waals corrections to the physical properties have been considered in the electronic structure calculations employing the empirical Grimme's correction (DFT+D2). We report here an interesting trend in their relative structural stability - the isolated M4O4 clusters prefer to stabilize more in the planar structure, while the cubane-like 3D structure is more favourable for most of the isolated M4S4 clusters than their planar 2D counterparts. Our study reveals that this contrasting trend in the relative structural stability is expected to be driven by an interesting interplay between the s-d and p-d hybridization effects of the constituents' valence electrons.

Abstract:We report on the high-resolution photoelectron spectroscopy of diatomic molecules TaX- (X = C, N, O) anions using a cryogenic ion trap combined with the slow electron velocity imaging (cryo-SEVI) method. We determined the electron affinities of TaC, TaN, and TaO to be 2.098(2), 1.576(2), and 1.069(2) eV, respectively. In addition, the electron affinities of TaX molecules were calculated using the CCSD(T) method with the complete basis sets. To interpret the complicated photoelectron spectra, we predicted the excited states of TaX molecules using the MRCI + Q method, accounting for the spin-orbit coupling effects. Several new excited states of these molecules were observed.

Abstract:We made an ab initio study of the spin-vibronic couplings in CH3O (X2E) based on diabatic model. The diabatic potential energy curves were calculated at the level of CASPT2/cc-pvtz. The calculated spin-vibronic energy levels are compared with the experimental data, which indicates that the present calculation has higher accuracy than the previously reported ones.

Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are performed to study the Y4O molecule in its neutral, anionic, and cationic states. The equilibrium geometries of Y4O, Y4O−, and Y4O+ are trigonal bi-pyramids. The ground states of Y4O, Y4O−, and Y4O+ are triplet (3A1), doublet (2A″), and doublet (2A′), respectively. Time-dependent DFT is used to calculate the excited states. A theoretical assignment for the features in the experimental photoelectron spectrum is given. All results obtained are in good agreement with the available experimental data.

Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are performed to study Cu2Ox (x = 1 - 4) clusters in their neutral, anionic and cationic states. The ground state structures are obtained and found to exhibit linear or near linear structures, which are different from the two- or three-dimensional ones suggested by the previous theoretical calculations. The calculated electron affinities of the clusters are in good agreement with the experimental ones. The low-lying excited states for the clusters are calculated using time-dependent DFT and used to assign the features in the photoelectron spectra. Our results compare well with the available experimental data.

Abstract:The 4p states in transition metals and their compounds usually play minor roles on their physical quantities. Recent development of resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) at the K-edge of transition metals, however, casts light on the 4p states, because the signals on orbital and magnetic superlattice spots are brought about by the modulation in the 4p states. The 4p states are extending in solids and thereby sensitive to electronic states at neighboring sites. This characteristic determines the mechanism of RXS that the intensity on the orbital superlattice spots are mainly generated by the lattice distortion and those on magnetic superlattice spots by the coupling of the 4p states with the orbital polarization in the 3d states at neighboring sites. Taking up typical examples for orbital and magnetic RXS, we demonstrate these mechanisms on the basis of the band structure calculation. Finally, we study the MCD spectra at the K-edge, demonstrating that the same mechanism as the magnetic RXS is working.

Abstract:The electronic geometries and spectroscopic properties of trans-dioxo- and monooxo-osmium (VI) complexes have been investigated theoretically. The geometry structures of the complexes were fully optimized using the B3LYP/LANL2DZ method for the ground state and the CIS/LANL2DZ method for the excited state. The calculated geometry parameters agree well with the available experimental data in the ground state. The bond length of OsO bond is lengthened in excited state relative to that of the ground state for trans-dioxo-osmium (VI) complexes, but shorten for monooxo-osmium (VI) complexes. Among the calculated dipole-allowed absorptions at λ>240nm, the intense absorptions of the complexes were mainly attributed to pz(O) (L=oxalate or malonate)→π∗(OsO)+π∗(CO), and the composition of pz(O) participate in the transition for monooxo-osmium (VI) complexes. The lowest energy absorptions of the complexes were mainly attribute to Os(dxy)+π(L)→π∗(OsO). The calculated phosphorescence emissions of the complexes were originated from 3[(π∗(OsO)+π∗(L))1((dxy(Os)+π∗(L))1] excited state. The calculation revealed that the emissions of the monooxo-osmium complexes are blue-shift compared with dioxo-osmium complexes when the ligands are same, and the lowest excited energy is higher when the ring is larger (i.e., the electron-donating groups are added) for these two kinds of the complexes.
On the Highest Oxidation States of the Actinoids in AnO4 Molecules (an = Ac – Cm): A DMRG‐CASSCF Study

Abstract:Actinoid tetroxide molecules AnO4 (An = Ac – Cm) are investigated with the ab initio density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) approach. Natural orbital shapes are used to read out the oxidation state (OS) of the f‐elements, and the atomic orbital energies and radii are used to explain the trends. The highest OSs reveal a “volcano”‐type variation: For An = Ac – Np, the OSs are equal to the number of available valence electrons, that is, AcIII, ThIV, PaV, UVI, and NpVII. Starting with plutonium as the turning point, the highest OSs in the most stable AnO4 isomers then decrease as PuV, AmV, and CmIII, indicating that the 5f‐electrons are hard to be fully oxidized off from Pu onward. The variations are related to the actinoid contraction and to the 5f‐covalency characteristics. Combined with previous work on OSs, we review their general trends throughout the periodic table, providing fundamental understanding of OS‐relevant phenomena.

Abstract:Matrix isolation infrared spectra and quantum chemical calculations of the (NN)(x)CrO and (NN)(x)CrO2 (x = 1, 2) molecules are reported. These species were prepared and isolated in solid argon by three different methods: co-condensation of the CrO and CrO2 molecules generated from laser ablation of CrO3 with N-2/Ar; reactions of laser-ablated Cr atoms with O-2/N-2/Ar mixtures, and reactions of laser-ablated Cr atoms with N2O/Ar. The product absorptions were identified by isotopic substitutions and density functional theoretical calculations. Evidence is also Presented for the (NN)(O-2)CrO2 molecule.

Abstract:A series of pure and mixed chromium standards has been analysed by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy in order to obtain a sufficiently homogeneous and self-consistent set of spectral parameters to be used in the resolution of complex spectra. Additional information was obtained about the stability of the various species under Ar ion bombardment. The results relevant to potassium chromate and dichromate, chromous acid, chromium (III) oxide, hydroxide and nitrate are described and compared critically with those in the published literature.

Abstract:Hybrid density functional calculations are performed to study the structural and electronic properties of neutral, anionic and cationic Y3O clusters. The most stable structures of these clusters are found to be triply bridging oxygen atom structures with C S symmetry. The ground states of Y3O, Y3O- and Y3O + are doublet (2A”), triplet (3A”) and singlet (1A’), respectively. The calculated electron affinities and ionization potentials are in good agreement with the available experimental data. Time-dependent density functional theory is used to calculate the low-lying excited states. A theoretical assignment for the features in the experimental photoelectron spectra is given.
