Abstract:Heritage corridors are methods to effectively protect and utilize linear cultural heritage based on the concept of regional conservation. The construction of a heritage corridor system is extremely important to preserve the natural environment of the heritage corridor area as well as the history and culture alongside. The majority of the research on the construction of heritage corridors heretofore focused on the generation of corridors, whereas studies on the classification of corridors are relatively limited, without a complete system for the construction of heritage corridors. Therefore, this paper aimed to (1) establish a comprehensive system for the construction of heritage corridors, (2) provide new ideas for the construction of heritage corridors, and (3) guide the scientific development of heritage corridors combining conservation and tourism. In the first place, the minimum cumulative resistance (MCR) model was applied to analyze the spatial structure of the study area and explore site selection of the heritage corridors; secondly, spatial syntax was used to measure the heritage corridors and determine the level of the heritage corridors; last but not least, the kernel density analysis was used to classify the types of heritage corridors. The present study shows that the heritage corridor system is built in a scientific approach, covering all aspects including construction, protection, and development.

Abstract:As a mixture of the trend of regionalization in cultural heritage conservation and thoughts on greenway, heritage corridors emp hasize not only cultural significance but also ecological and economical value. Though possessing many cultural heritages with a linear form, China has not any regional conservation framework in its heritage system, which give a great impac t on the conservation of those heritages, including The Great Canal. It is point ed out in the article that the construction of heritage corridor in China is not only the need of conservation ,but also the need of constructing foreseeing an efficient ecological infrastructure and the need of further development of cultu ral tourism. It is also discussed briefly in the article how to plan heritage co rridor in China with the case of The Great Canal in the context of rapid urbaniz ation and the project of South Water to North Transfer.

Abstract:Heritage area is a new approach for the preservation of large scale cultural landscape.It emphasizes the relationship between human being and land,aims to protect natural and cultural heritage,develops economy,rebuilds regional identity,and provides recreational opportunities through the integration of conservation and utilization.The evolution process of heritage preservation of the United States can be divided into three periods: historic building,historic district and town,and cultural landscape.The concept of heritage area has been developed based on the development of the preservation of large scale cultural landscape.Heritage areas are special cultural landscape embodying the harmony of human being and nature,and are the common products of them.In the United States,a heritage can also be called heritage corridor,urban cultural park,heritage park,partnership park,heritage partnership or heritage district etc.The definition of heritage area contains three main features: flexible scales and complex constituents,multiple values and integrated preservation approaches based on partnerships.Heritage areas can include historic transportation corridors,historic industrial districts and traditional vernacular landscape and some ancient battlefields etc.This article then discussed some major problems in application: ① the procedure and standards for the designation of a National Heritage Area;②the definition of the boundary of a heritage area;③ the main content of a management plan.In the end,the author also provided some suggestions for the application of heritage area idea in China,which are strengthening the understanding of the idea of heritage area via education;exploring suitable mechanism for the preservation of large scale cultural heritage;advocating interdisciplinary researches to solve diverse complex problems in heritage areas.

Abstract:The heritage corridor approach is a regional methodology for heritage protection of large scale cultural landscapes.Combining the regional heritage protection strategy and the greenway approach,the heritage corridor approach places emphasis on the historical values,in conjunction with ecological and economical values.The Grand Canal is one of the most important cultural heritages in China dating back more than 2500 years to the late Spring and Autumn Period.The Grand Canal is the longest and oldest man-made canal in the world with a total length of over 1700 kilometers.Many heterogeneous components overlap forming an intricate system.Therefore,identifying the composition of the heritage corridor is the first step for the long-term protection and management of the natural and cultural elements of the Grand Canal.In connection with the distinct space-time background,the genesis method focuses on dynamic modeling analyses of the constructing process.This approach is effective in illustrating the components and their interrelation to the complex system,so that we can identify the components which have close relations to the develop-ment of the Grand Canal.Genesis analysis visualizes the evolution of the Grand Canal Heritage Corridor and the function and interaction of its various components.Based on genesis analysis,the Grand Canal Heritage Corridor is composed of three major systems:natural system,cultural heritage system and supporting system.The natural system includes regional landscape features such as wetlands,forests,and farmlands to constitute the physical settings of the corridor.The cultural heritage system includes traditional hydrological engineering services such as water courses,water sources,transportation and distribution utilities related to the corridor's hydraulic functions.The cultural heritage system includes both tangible heritages such as ancient buildings,sites,canal settlements and intangible heritages such as folklore,poems and traditional performance art.The supporting system consists of trails,interpretive systems and public service facilities.These three systems are integrated to form the natural,cultural and social properties of the Grand Canal,and are indispensable for the sustainable development of the Grand Canal heritage area.The Grand Canal Heritage corridor is a living system that provides diverse services of production,regulation,life support,recreation,education and aesthetic appreciation.

Abstract:As a concept based on greenway development, heritage corridor, which combined recreation and tourism development with ecological restoration and cultural conservation, has come into being in the United States since the 1980s. With rapid development in the study of greenway network, plans of heritage greenway network were proposed for heritage conservation as part of ecological infrastructure in regional scale in recent years worldwide. As many cases have shown, suitability analysis is the key in greenway planning study. Some approaches of greenway suitability analysis given in the former cases were too complicated and too much data dependent to be applicable in the Chinese condition. With GIS (geographic information system) technology and MCR (minimum cumulative resistance) model being used, a new approach of heritage corridor suitability analysis is designed to analyse and identify the suitability of potential areas for heritage corridors. This approach is featured in the following aspects: 1) A heritage corridor is defined as a linear landscape element that combines the function of recreational activities, heritage protection and ecological processes. 2) In addition to the physical faccors of heritages, the process of recreational use is the major concern in the definition of the suitability of a heritage corridor. 3) Recreational activities associated with heritages are considered as a horizontal process going across the landscape. This process is taken as an active process which overcomes the cumulative landscape resistance affected by land uses and covers. The less accumulative resistance a user is going to experience across the landscape, the more suitable the landscape is designated as heritage corridors. 4) The suitability of a landscape for a heritage corridor is therefore represented through the relative accumulative resistance in the process that a user experiences across the landscape towards or between heritage sites. 5) The calculation of accumulative landscape resistance is based on the cost-distance from the sources (heritage sites) to any points in the landscape.Different land uses and covers contribute differently to the resistance, and their weights are based on the evaluation by experts and inquiry of the local people. A case study in a rapidly urbanizing region, Taizhou City of Zhejiang Province, is presented.

Abstract:Corridor heritage like the Silk Road,the Great Canal from Beijing to Hangzhou and the Tea-Horse Ancient Road has been paid more and more attention by the society since the beginning of the 21st century.Taking and developing the basic theories of the heritage corridor and the cultural routes,the authors of this paper put forward the concept of corridor heritage with Chinese characteristics.It′s not only a new concept in accordance with China′s cultural heritage history and modern protection and development of China′s heritage,but also a new method for protecting and developing the heritage.This paper puts an emphasis on the rational protection and development of corridor heritage tourism resources under Placeality Theory,ASES Model,CBD Theory and Nested-Triangle Model.

Abstract:Heritage corridor,which combined cultural conservation and ecological restoration with recreation and tourism development,provides new strategy and method for regional development and cultural heritage protection. Therefore,establishing heritage corridor network is important for the construction of Historical and Cultural City,and Livable City. Firstly,based on cultural heritages data and literature review,the linear cultural heritages of Beijing was defined. Secondly,with the aid of spatial analysis of GIS and MCR (minimum cumulative resistance) model,the spatial pattern of cultural heritages,and the suitability for heritage corridor network was analyzed. Finally,the conceptual plan and conservation strategy for heritage corridor network in Beijing were proposed. The result demonstrates that the heritage corridor network based on spatial analysis could effectively conserve the cultural heritages,and increase the accessibility of cultural heritages.

Abstract:Due to the large scale and the complex cultural structure, the Great Site can be easily affected during the process of city development, which leads to an imbalance and inequality trend from the regional perspective. Based on the research about conservation and utilization of the linear heritage at home and abroad, the theoretical basis and method of heritage corridor planning in the Western Han Dynasty Mausoleums were discussed in this paper. The current research on the heritage corridor is mainly concerning the legacy which is in the linear form itself, such as the Canal and the Wall , etc. There are few studies on constructing the heritage corridor by connecting the heritage points with linear characteristics. Based on the analysis of the basic conditions about the heritage corridor construction, this paper determines the theoretical frame - work of heritage corridor construction from the aspects of concept co nnotation, system elements and planning system. Based on the theoretical framework, the planning area was determined through suitability analysis. At the same time, the construction path of the heritage corridor was studied from the three aspects of Patch-Corridor-Matrix. It aims to strengthen the interaction between the Great Site and the surrounding area by the planning, so as to promote the heritage activation, as well as the development of the region.

Abstract:Cultural routes (or cultural itinerary) was the most important concept in the conservation of world heritage in recent years. The article introduce the development of the conservation of cultural routes systematically, and compare the cultural routes concept with “heritage corridor” which have been prevailing in America for years. Based on the introduction and comparison, the article discussed the two concepts in Chinese context of heritage conservation. The article point out the significance for china to use the two concepts as reference in heritage conservation and region planning.

Abstract:In the field of world heritage conservation, there has been broad consensus on carrying out heritage conservation research on the basis of spatial integration and interregional and international cooperation. However, there are still many deficiencies in the integration of culture with the environment, regional economic and social development, and the regional, holistic and multimodal conservation and utilization of cultural heritage sites. In China, the Dongjiang-Hanjiang River Basin is a representative area of substantial cultural and ecological value for both Guangdong Province and the whole country. This paper uses the morphological spatial pattern analysis and the minimum cumulative resistance model to integrate cultural ecology sources and establish a cross-regional and large-scale cultural ecology network system that includes 1 main corridor, 22 important corridors and 17 secondary corridors. In addition, based on identified cultural landscape nodes and cultural ecology services, the economy of the cultural ecology corridor could be developed with large-scale co-construction, co-governance and shared working mechanisms to overcome administrative limits and realize the conservation and utilization of multimodal and large-scale heritage sites. This approach has strong theoretical and practical significance for innovative methods in cultural ecology research, as well as for new content in the research of Lingnan culture, ecosystem restoration, and the economic and social development of towns and villages. This article supplements unilateral studies of regional culture and ecology and demonstrates an in-depth application of cultural ecology theory.

Abstract:The cultural heritage resources along Weihe river system in Xi’an Metropolitan Area are diverse, with the feature of linear distribution. Nevertheless the existing heritage sites in protection are separated and unrelated, in addition the surrounding environment has been destroyed to a large extent, and thus the requirement for regional protection of heritage is urgent. On the basis of theory and methodology of Heritage Corridor, initial surveys of local heritage have been done, the basic data and information has been combed, heritage constitution as well as features of spatial and diachronic distribution has been discussed, heritage value has been analyzed, and then the concept and thought of the construction of Weihe Water System Heritage Corridor in Xi’an Metropolitan Area is proposed, to provide basic research framework for regional heritage protection.
“Cultural Heritage Corridor of The Great Wall ”: The Hypothesis of the Overall Protection of Ancient Frontier Villages

Abstract:In the long-term historical development process,the function of the ancient villages located in the border of the Great Wall has evolved,from an area of single military defense function originally to cultural and ecological space integrating military,commerce and the folklore. The protection of the ancient villages has received a wide attention of society. However,the existing protecting mode neglects the coexistence of material cultural heritage and intangible cultural heritage,as well as the inalienability of protection and the ecological environment. As a result,the protecting mode is a one-sided and split one. In order to realize the overall protection objective of the ancient villages,by using "ethnic corridor"and "heritage corridor"theories and the related theoretical results and taking the practice of Datong section protecting mode as an example,the thesis proposes the protecting mode of "cultural heritage corridor of the Great Wall",which aims at providing lessons for the protection and development of ancient villages along the whole Great Wall.

Abstract:Among the heritages protected under the national scenic area system and cultural relics system in China, there are many cultural landscapes which have been paid more and more attentions by the national and international scholars. However the research of the cultural landscape heritage (CLH) is far from being systematic nowadays in China. This thesis traces the summary history of CLH and its researching development in China, and emphasizes that the landscape culture is the key point on studying and protecting of CLH. On the basis of analyzing the problems of Chinese CLH protecting, this paper mentions the composite protection, renovation and exhibition of materialized culture heritage, intangible culture heritage and natural heritage by analyzing the elements and its carriers of landscape culture, and integrating interdisciplinary researching and new technologies.
