Abstract:Based on the theory of wavelet transform, a modified Embedded Zero-tree Wavelet (EZW) algorithm is proposed. The new EZW algorithm is formulated by redefining wavelet coefficient symbols. The new algorithm decreases the number of zero-trees on the image compression, reduces the length of the compressed bit-stream, and offers as main advantages a saving of until 50% of the image total storage space and even with the information loss the images are visually very similar to the originals. The new algorithm is implemented by programming in Language C. Finally, the experimental results demonstrate the algorithm is practical and efficient whether compression or decompression.

Abstract:After analyzing the merit and disadvantage of hybrid fractal zerotree wavelet image coding algorithm, a new improved coding algorithm based on the IFS mapping in the DWT domain is proposed. In this algorithm, the performances as zerotree-based encoder and fractal image coder are combined in the wavelet domain. Using oriented range and domain subtrees in the matching process, the matching precision is enhanced. For this reason, the image can be reconstructed blocklessly with more edge information retained. Experiment results are satisfactory, especially the compression ratio can be improved and the block effect in the reconstructed image can be eliminated.

Abstract:Images are important in multimedia applications, but restrictions on bandwidth and storage capacity make image compression techniques a key part of multimedia systems. Wavelets are a new mathematical tool for image compression that have many advantages compared with other orthogonal transforms. Wavelet coding has, therefore, become a focus of coding research. This paper describes the embedded zerotree wavelet (EZW) coding algorithm adopted by MPEG (moving picture experts group), and some coding efficiency defects in EZW. The zerotree algorithm is then combined with quantization and a bit rate control algorithm to implement a new zerotree wavelet image coder. This coder runs faster than EZW with little decrease in quality.

Abstract:Multiwavelets constitute a new chapter which has been added to wavelet theory, possess different properties from scalar wavelets. It is crucial for multiwavelets to choose a good prefilter which can provide a good approximation to the initial signals. In this paper, an approach to the construction of orthogonal balanced filter is proposed, and experimental results of the image coding by the approach prove that its performance is higher than GHM and CL multiwavelets, closer to or higher than 9/7 scalar filter without any prefilter.

Abstract:The application for multi-wavelet in image compression was studied. Firstly, the basic principle of multi- resolution analysis of multi-wavelet was introduced. Secondly, a multi-wavelet compression algorithm of image was proposed, and finally the compression experiment for Barbara was conducted. Theoretically and experimentally, it shows that the proposed algorithm can acquire high PSNR and good visual effect with high compression ratio.

Abstract:Multiwavelets are the new addition to the body of wavelet theory. It is also based on the idea of multiresolution analysis (MRA). An MRA is usually generated by one scaling function. However, such wavelets cannot possess the properties of compact support, linear phase, and orthogonality simultaneously. Realized as matrix-valued filterbanks leading to wavelet bases, multiwavelets can offer these three properties simultaneously which are strongly desired in many applications, such as a fast multiresolution pyramid decomposition algorithm of image with the 2 ґ 2 matrix. To succeed using the EZW algorithms, we wish there still are some of the relationships between ancestors and their offspring. But the relationship is not very clear after the conventional iteration of multiwavelet decomposition which is similar to the scalar wavelet decomposition, and the encoding effect and efficiency are not very good. Therefore, this paper presents full new decomposition and quantization methods adapt to the symmetric property of multiwavelets. Extensive experimental results demonstrate that our techniques exhibit performance equal or superior to the conventional decomposition methods.

Abstract:The good spatial-frequencial localization characteristics of wavelet transform make the energy of image congregate mostly in lower frequency subimage. This paper utilizes the property of the asymmetrical energy distribution on different multiresolution levels, and introduces a method which is called multiresolution levels compression (MLC) to process the image on the levels of different multiresolution. By the estimate and studying of the quantization coefficients during wavelet transform on every decomposed level, the experiment can get the best quantization coefficient for any particular level. Theoretical analysis and experimental results demonstrate that a method of higher compression rate is implemented. In the experiment, the best quantization coefficient of every level is determined by the data analysis of human. For the aim to process huge amount of images such as the images from the Internet, the technology of artificial intelligence and machine learning can be used to let the computer use MLC method by studying a certain number of image examples and then process more images automatically. The ability to use the MLC method would also improve according to the amount of images the computer has studied. This is the new direction to perform in the near future.

Abstract:This paper presents a watermarking scheme, which embeds visible watermark by utilizing the human visual system and inserts invisible watermark by quantizing the absolute value of the selected appropriate coefficients in wavelet domain. The invisible watermark can be extracted blindly. The experimental result demonstrates that the proposed algorithm is robust to common signal processing operations and some hostile attacks.

Abstract:Image and video coding is fundamental to data storage and transmission. JPEG 2000 is the latest international image coding standard which exploits wavelet transform for image compression. Zerotree coding structure is an efficient algorithm for coding of wavelet transform coefficients. However, implementation complexity of wavelet transform and long coding process of zerotree structure may limit the application in some cases. In this paper, an idea of multilevel DCT-based zerotree image coding is proposed, in which Wavelet Transform (WT) is replaced by Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) and DCT coefficients are regrouped into subbands of different frequencies. Furthermore, a new zerotree coding structure is proposed to reduce the complexity of zerotree coding process. A conventional zerotree with a parent-child relation of 2×2 offspring is expanded to the one of 4×4 offspring. Coefficients reorder and inverse DCT are needed when DCT transform size is not a power of 4. This expansion makes each parent node of zerotree coding structure have more child nodes and, therefore, reduce the complexity of encoding process. Simulation results of images with different spatial resolutions are presented to show the advantage of the proposed algorithm. The proposed multi-level DCT-based zerotree image coding algorithm performs similar coding performance as the SPIHT method. The zerotree coding structure with a parent-child relation of 4×4 pixels can significantly reduce the complexity of high-bitrate coding process without sacrificing image subjective quality.

Abstract:An image coding scheme based on multiwavelet transform and vector quantization is proposed. Firstly, image is decomposed by multiwavelet transform, and then the high frequency coefficients are coded by use of the codebook made by the improved LBG algorithm. The scheme fully uses the comparability of different resolution sub-images in the multiwavelet domain. Coefficients in the highest resolution sub-image are indexed with codebook, and coefficients in the lower resolution sub-image use these index information directly under some certain organization. Comparing to the traditional coding method based on single wavelet, the scheme can improve the quality of reconstruction image and reduce the bite rate at the same time.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a wavelet packet image coding algorithm based on quadtree classification and UTCQ. It is composed of four parts: (1) wavelet packet decomposition and best basis selection based on a new cost function, (2) a quadtree classification procedure, used to classify the wavelet packet coefficients into two sets: a significant one and an insignificant one, (3) the universal trellis coded quantization, used to code the significant coefficients sets, (4) the entropy coder, used to code the indices of the universal trellis coded quantizer output. The image coding results, calculated from actual file sizes and images reconstructed by the decoding algorithm are either comparable to or surpass previous results for texture-rich images.
A Wavelet-based Approach for Compression of Multi-spectral Images

Abstract:An approach for compression of multi-spectral images is proposed based on Karhunen-Loeve transform and wavelet trellis-coded quantization. Firstly, the algorithm takes advantage of the step of K-L transform to remove the spectral redundancy. Then the discrete wavelet transform is carried out over the image of K-L transformed results,and trellis-coded quantization with uniform threshold is adopted to quantize the sub-band images. At last, adaptive arithmetic encoding is adopted to entropy encode the quantized results. To compute optimal quantization thresholds in rate-distortion sense for each sub-bands at all spectral bands, an algorithm for bit allocation based on sub-band statistic characteristic and R-D characteristic of trellis-coded quantization is proposed. The experiments show that the approach can efficiently compress multi-spectral remote sensing images, and the excellent performance of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated.

Abstract:A new zerotree based wavelet image coding scheme is put forward. Prior to zerotree coding, all the wavelet coefficients are rearranged according to their energy estimation based on tree structure. As a result, bit allocation is optimized and PSNR is improved by 0.3-0.5dB. Meanwhile, both encoding and decoding processes are about 10% less time-consuming, Furthermore, the code stream produced is embedded and able to support multirate image decoding.

Embedded Zerotree Wavelet Image Coding Algorithm Based on Single List and Recursive Scan

Abstract:An improved embedded zerotree wavelet image coding algorithm is proposed in this paper. It is an improved vision of Shaprio's EZW algorithm. First, a single list scheme is used in successive-approximation Quantization(SAQ), dispensing with double dynamic list of EZW algorithm. The single list make the scan process more simple and faster, and lead to better rate-distortion characteristic. Second, a fast algorithm based on spatial orientation tree recursive scan for the zerotree coding is designed. The zerotree symbols of one quantization layer can be calculated with only one access per coefficient, solving the rescaning problem completely. At last, a new Markov model based on quantization symbol field relativity for adaptive arithmetic coding algorithm is used, for higher compression efficient. Experimental results show that it peroforms better than the EZW algorithm in coding efficiency, maintains the fine-granularity scalability.
Low Bit Rate Wavelet-Based Image and Video Compression with Adaptive Quantization, Coding and Postprocessing

Abstract:Discrete wavelet transform (DWT) provides an advantageous framework of multiresolution space-frequency representation with promising applications in image processing. The challenge and the opportunity in wavelet compression is the exploitation of the characteristics of the subband coefficients. In the decomposed subbands, the coefficients with the same magnitude generally do not have the same perceptual importance, depending on whether they belong to clustered scene structures. We propose an efficient scene adaptive and signal adaptive quantization scheme capable of exploiting, both the spectral and spatial localization properties resulting from wavelet transform. The proposed quantization is implemented as an MAP estimation based clustering process in which subband coefficients are quantized to their cluster means, subject to the spatial constraints enforced by a Markov-Gibbs random field. Consequently, the available bits are allocated to visually important scene structures so that the information loss is least perceptible by the human viewers. This adaptive quantization represents an effort to develop compression algorithms for low bit rates through the exploitation of both the information theory and the human visual system. It is fundamentally different from the existing scalar and vector quantization schemes in that only the proposed adaptive quantization can differentiate the perceptual importance of the subband coefficients. The concept and the mechanism of the scene structure preservation are applicable and tunable to other image processing tasks. This research also investigates several related topics, including a zerotree-based coding scheme to exploit the dependencies of coefficients across different wavelet scales, a face location and region-based prioritized coding for high perceptual quality videoconferencing, and a generic image enhancement technique for the reduction of coding artifacts at low bit rates. In addition, perspectives of a wavelet-based compression scheme for wireless communications is analyzed. Experimental results in various applications have shown the potential of the proposed scheme for low bit rate image and video coding.
