Abstract:Recently, electrochromic thin films and thin film devices have attracted more and more interest because of strong possibility to act as smart windows and smart glass that may be widely used in the daily life[1]. The electrochromic thin film devices usually have a five layers structure: an actual electrochromic layer, an ionic conductor and an ion storage layer are sandwiched between two outer transparent electrical conductive layers, WO3 film is used as the actual electrochromic films in the general studies. The coloration and bleaching are accomplished when positive ions (Li+, H+ etc. )are moved from the ion storage, via the ionic conductor, into the electrochromic layer, or in the inverse direction. Currently, the electrochromic thin films or thin film devices are characterized by electrochemical analysis and optical spectral transmittance measurement. In fact, the electrochromic effect is a spectral absorption modulation, the investigation of the optical absorption variation during the electrochromic process may offer us more information about the process.

Abstract:Electrochromic materials have been attached more and more interests due to their potential applications such as smart windows, display and military camouflage, etc. In this paper, the electrochromic properties and research progress of polyaniline, polythiophene, polypyrrole and hybrid conducting polymers are reviewed briefly. It is believed that the conducting copolymers and organic/inorganic hybrid conducting polymers with multicolors good stability and film formation properties should be the development direction for electrochromic materials.

Abstract:An overview of one the most successful developed switchable windows based on conducting polymers,polythiophene and derivatives,which shows blue color,is presented.In addition,red and green color monomers and devices,a newly designed structure with an organic polymer as active layer and an inorganic carbon,metal or metal oxide working as counter part,and semi-solid electrolyte are developed.Several prototypes were fabricated for different applications in civil,industrial and military fields.Present and future applications for electrochromic window(ECW) that are discussed include large sized architectural and vehicle windows,visual display,camouflage textile and eye protection device.

Abstract:The design,structure and performance evaluations of electrochromic smart windows are systematically discussed based on the latest literature.Major materials used for smart windows are summarized.And some discussions are held about the future prospects of smart windows.It is pointed out that the smart windows with two electrochromic films greatly simplify the procedure of fabrication and exhibit better performance than the traditional five-or four-layer devices working in absence of specific ion storage counter electrode.Electrochromic materials and electrolyte play an important role in the materials used in smart windows.Polymer electrochromic materials have good coloration efficiency and processibility,and polymer electrolyte containing lithium ions can give good ionic conductivities and wide range of application temperature.Both of them are preferentially suitable for constructing smart windows.

Abstract:This article reviews the basic principles of and recent developments in electrochromic, photochromic, and thermochromic materials for applications in smart windows. Compared with current static windows, smart windows can dynamically modulate the transmittance of solar irradiation based on weather conditions and personal preferences, thus simultaneously improving building energy efficiency and indoor human comfort. Although some smart windows are commercially available, their widespread implementation has not yet been realized. Recent advances in nanostructured materials provide new opportunities for next-generation smart window technology owing to their unique structure-property relations. Nanomaterials can provide enhanced coloration efficiency, faster switching kinetics, and longer lifetime. In addition, their compatibility with solution processing enables low-cost and high-throughput fabrication. This review also discusses the importance of dual-band modulation of visible and near-infrared (NIR) light, as nearly 50% of solar energy lies in the NIR region. Some latest results show that solution-processable nanostructured systems can selectively modulate the NIR light without affecting the visible transmittance, thus reducing energy consumption by air conditioning, heating, and artificial lighting.

Abstract:Five-layer-structured electrochromic glass (window), containing a transparent conductive layer, an electrochromic layer, an ionic conductive layer, an ionic storage layer and a second conductive transparent layer, was fabricated. The electrochromic glass adopts the conjugated polymer, poly[3,3-dimethyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-thieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxepine] (PProDOT-Me-2), as a blue electrochromic active layer, vanadium pentaoxide film as an ion storage layer and polymer gel electrolyte as the ionic transport layer. Dimension of smart glass up to 12 x 20 inch was developed. UV curable sealant was applied for the sealing devices. Color changing or switching speed of 12 x 20 inch smart glass from dark state to the transparent state (or vise versa) is less than 15 seconds under applied 1.5 voltages. Besides the long open circuit memory (the colored state or transparent state remains the same state after the power is off), the smart window can be adjusted easily into the intermediate state between the dark state and the transparent state by just simply turn the power on or off. No space consuming or dirt collecting shades, curtains or blinds are needed. The applications of the smart window, e.g. in the aircrafts, automobiles and architectures were discussed as well.

Abstract:Recently, conducting polymers (CPs) are significantly investigated for electrochromic devices (ECDs), which are great materials for smart windows, display devices, or camouflage applications. Three well‐known CPs, including polyaniline, poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate, and polypyrrole, exhibit numerous benefits for the electrochromic process. In this work, the cutting‐edge development of ECDs based on those CPs is completely presented. Electrochromism is a unique phenomenon based on the ability to change the optical properties or color of a material when an external potential is applied. Conventional electrochromic materials are based on inorganic materials. In particular, transition metal oxides, such as tungsten oxide and molybdenum oxide, are extensively investigated for use in commercial electrochromic devices (ECDs). However, these devices have several drawbacks including single color change, expensive materials, and a slow switching speed. To overcome these challenges, new substitute materials need to be investigated with the advantages of multicolor, fast response, low cost, ease of processing, and environmentally friendly materials. Among the many great candidates, conducting polymers (CPs) have emerged as a prominent approach. In this review, the current state‐of‐the‐art development of ECDs based on the three most popular CPs, namely, polyaniline, polypyrrole, and poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate, is introduced, with emphasis on their synthetic approaches and electrochromic performance.

Switchable Window Based on Electrochromic Polymers

Abstract:A large contrast ratio (>ΔΤ = 60%) and rapid switching (0.3–1 s) electrochromic (EC) polymer device that consists of a laminated two-layer structure between two electrodes was prepared. The new design consists of an indium tin oxide (ITO) glass electrode, a cathodic EC polymer film, a solid electrolyte, and a counterelectrode that replaces the anodic EC polymer and ITO electrode. Four EC polymers including two new EC polymers, Poly[3-methyl-3′-propyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-thieno(3,4-b)(1,4)dioxepine] (PProDOT-MePro) and Poly[3,3-diethyl-3,4-dihydro-2H,7H-(1,4)dioxepino(2,3-c)pyrrole] (PProDOP-Et_2), were synthesized as cathodic EC polymers. A carbon-based counterelectrode was prepared for comparison with an Au-based counterelectrode. Several kinds of polymer gel electrolytes were prepared for comparison. The devices (windows) were increased in area from 0.028 × 0.04 in.^2, 1 × 1 in.^2 to 3 × 3 in.^2 Three main components, the EC polymer film, the gel electrolyte, and the counterelectrode, were studied and their optical properties, conductivities, and repeatabilities were compared. The effects of window size on the contrast ratio, switching speed, power usage, and repeatability were studied.

Abstract:The synthesis, characterization and polymerization of two new electrochromic (EC) monomers based on 3, 4-alkylenedioxythiophene are reported. One is 3, 4-bis-(2, 2, 2-trifluoro-ethoxy)-thiophene which contains electron withdrawing group. Another is 6, 6-dimethy-6, 7-dihydro-5H-4, 8-dioxa-2-thia-6-sila-azulene which contains an electron donating group. Primary experiment results show that the new monomers have potential to form EC materials with new colors after polymerization. Color mixing of two EC polymers with blue and red color was studied. The principle of subtractive color mixing for achieving new color EC materials is also demonstrated.

Abstract:Electrochromism has received increasing attention due to its unique electrochromic feature and the induced applications. This review provides an overview on the recent developments in the synthesis and application of the electrochromic metal oxides in smart windows, display devices, e‐skins, and multifunctional energy storage devices. The main cathodic and anodic electrochromic metal oxides are surveyed here, with the discussion of representative examples in details. The current state‐of‐the‐art research activities of the derived multifunctional electrochromic devices are highlighted, i.e., material systems, components, structures, morphology, the resulting performance, etc. Major challenges and potential solutions are also discussed. Additionally, the future perspective on the development trends in electrochromic metal oxides and the commercialization of relevant devices is also proposed.

Abstract:Smart windows regulate the indoor solar radiation by adjusting their optical transmissive properties, offering an efficient way toward energy-saving buildings, vehicles, etc. Electrochromism is one of the most promising solutions due to its simple control, versatile colors. Yet, electrochromics cannot give zero-transmission through the whole visible range, leading to the windows that can always be looked through and limited for applications in the public sector. In this work, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) hydrogel, which undergoes temperature-stimulated phase transition from a highly transparent state to a highly scattered zero-transmission state through the whole visible range is used in the electrolyte of the electrochromic devices without affecting their electrochromic performance. It can be universally applied to inorganic and organic electrochromic devices, and the phase transition temperature can be easily tuned by the ion concentration. Therefore, apart from its ion conductive function, the electrolyte performs the chromatic transition function as well, allowing the electrochromic devices to achieve a zero-transmissive, absolute "private" state. This chromatic engineering of the electrolyte can significantly broaden the industrial market of electrochromic smart window applications from public to private circumstances and bring much more flexibility in building facades design, which is a remarkable pavement for further industrial applications.

Abstract:Thermochromic smart windows technology can intelligently regulate indoor solar radiation by changing indoor light transmittance in response to thermal stimulation, thus reducing energy consumption of the building. In recent years, with the development of new energy-saving materials and the combination with practical technology, energy-saving smart windows technology has received more and more attention from scientific research. Based on the summary of thermochromic smart windows by Yi Long research groups, this review described the applications of thermal responsive organic materials in smart windows, including poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAm) hydrogels, hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) hydrogels, ionic liquids and liquid crystals. Besides, the mechanism of various organic materials and the properties of functional materials were also introduced. Finally, opportunities and challenges relating to thermochromic smart windows and prospects for future development are discussed.

Abstract:Smart windows (SWs) with tunable opacity are sought to regulate solar‐irradiation and privacy protection. A new smart window material based on a phase‐changing polymer that can be reversibly switched between a semicrystalline, opaque state and an amorphous, transparent state is introduced. The polymer film is a network of the phase‐changing poly(stearyl acrylate) crosslinked with a poly(ethylene oxide) oligomer. The two constituent polymers show strong phase separation. The transmission switching of the resulting copolymer film is resulted from the combination of three different mechanisms: reversible phase changing of the poly(stearyl acrylate) component, phase separation between the two distinct constituent polymers, and a large change of refractive index of the phase‐changing polymer during the amorphous‐to‐semicrystalline transition. The opaqueness switching can be reversed and repeated for more than 500 cycles of heating and cooling. A silver nanowire (AgNW)‐based transparent heater is combined with the SW film to control the semicrystalline‐to‐amorphous phase transition. The resulting smart window exhibits a high infrared transmittance modulation (ΔT IR) of 80.4% and solar transmittance modulation (ΔT solar) of 70.2%, which significantly outperform existing thermochromic smart windows.

Abstract:In this work, a facile approach to fabricating multifunctional smart windows by employing an ionic liquid-doped liquid crystal (LC)/polymer composite was reported. The composite was prepared via an established method of polymerization-induced phase separation while a commercial ionic liquid was doped into the composite as a supporting electrolyte. The smart window, which was prepared by sandwiching the as-prepared composite in two indium tin oxide (ITO) glasses, can exhibit a multifunctional mode. Specifically, the light transmittance and the coloration of the windows were regulated by different external stimuli. The electrically switchable transmittance of the window was achieved by an alternating current (AC) electric field and the window transformed into a transparent state from an opaque state under the AC field. The temperature was also used to realize the heat controllable transmittance, in which the window was turbid at a lower temperature and transparent at a high temperature. The electrically induced coloration of the window was manipulated by a direct current (DC) electric field and the window was changed into a green state from a colorless state under the DC field. This work is expected to open avenues to achieve a promising candidate for multifunctional smart windows with practical applications.

Abstract:We explore a new method to prepare polyoxometalate-based electrochromic (EC) smart windows. It is a simple and low cost process to prepare EC films by a solution-based electrodeposition method. The polyoxometalate-based EC smart windows exhibit high transparency in the bleached state, good optical contrast, long durability, and high coloration efficiency.

Abstract:Electrochromic devices (ECDs) have broad application prospects in smart windows, low-power displays, anti-glare rearview mirrors, and so on. The electrolyte layer is one of the crucial components of ECDs acting as an interface layer between two electrodes to provide ions transport. Conventional liquid electrolytes have disadvantages of easy leakage, low safety and complex encapsulation, while inorganic solid electrolytes (ISEs) have very poor room temperature conductivity. Polymer electrolytes are composites consisting of polymeric matrices, solvents, conductive salts and curing agents, including solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs), gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) and composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs). They are widely used in ECDs because of their excellent ionic conductivity, superior electrochemical stability, high transparency and simplicity of processing. This review provides a detailed discussion of the types, mechanisms, characteristics and preparation methods of polymer electrolytes for ECDs. The latest research progresses in the design and application of CPEs based on poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA), poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) are highlighted, and the potential applications of polymer electrolytes in the field of electrochromism are reviewed. Furthermore, the future development of polymer electrolytes in ECDs with stability, significant coloration efficiency and high ionic conductivity is discussed.
