Abstract:A high-Z nuclei detector based reactor neutrino spectra measurement is being operated by TEXONO collaboration, focusing on low energy low background experiments in neutrino and astroparticle physics. This article reviews the data processing procedures adopted on CsI(TI) scintillator detector array, one of the two major detectors in TEXONO project. Owing to the complications in reconstructing energy spectra from the two-end output system, two approaches are introduced to improve the resolution of the final result.

Abstract:It is important to measure the quenching factor of recoiled nuclei of detector for direct detection of WIMP. Energy calibration of CsI(Tl) crystal detector for measuring quenching factor of recoiled nuclei induced by incident neutron beam has been done with low-energy X-ray sources such as 109 Cd and 133 Ba and the linearity of energy response of experimental system is obtained. The equivalent energy deposited in CsI(Tl) crystal of a single photoelectron of PMT has been measured. The time of integration of current signals is optimized for different X-ray source energys.

Abstract:In this study, we constructed two annular detector arrays comprising 24 wedge-shaped CsI(Tl) crystals, and tested them using an source and radioactive beams of C on a CD target. We compared the properties of a CsI(Tl) crystal encapsulated with various reflectors, revealing that using the 80- m-thick ESR film to pack the CsI(Tl) crystal yielded the largest light output with the smallest non-uniformity in light output ( LO ). For the 24 CsI(Tl) detectors with the 80- m-thick ESR films, the average energy resolution improved as the average light output increased; however, it deteriorated as the LO value increased. To form two annular Si-CsI(Tl) telescopes for identifying the light-charged particles, the LO value and energy resolution of each CsI(Tl) detector were maintained under 20% and 7.7%, respectively. These telescopes were tested for the first time in a direct nuclear reaction experiment using C + d . The results demonstrated that the Z = 1 and Z = 2 charged particles were adequately discriminated by the telescopes using the standard - E method.

Abstract:Crystal scintillators provide potential merits for the pursuit of low-energy low-background experiments. A CsI(Tl) scintillating crystal detector is being constructed to study low-energy neutrino physics at a nuclear reactor, while projects are underway to adopt this technique for dark matter searches. The choice of the geometrical parameters of the crystal modules, as well as the optimization of the read-out scheme, are the results of an R D program. Crystals with 40 cm in length were developed. The detector requirements and the achieved performance of the prototypes are presented. Future prospects for this technique are discussed.

Abstract:NaI(Tl) scintillation detectors have been widely applied for gamma-ray spectrum measurements owing to advantages such as high detection efficiency and low price. However, the mitigation of the limited energy resolution of these detectors, which detracts from an accurate analysis of the instrument spectra obtained, remains a crucial need. Based on the physical properties and spectrum formation processes of NaI(Tl) scintillation detectors, the detector response to gamma photons with different energies is represented by photopeaks that are approximately Gaussian in shape with unique full-width-at-half-maximum (FWHM) values. The FWHM is established as a detector parameter based on resolution calibrations and is used in the construction of a general Gaussian response matrix, which is employed for the inverse decomposition of gamma spectra obtained from the detector. The Gold and Boosted Gold iterative algorithms are employed to accelerate the decomposition of the measured spectrum. Tests of the inverse decomposition method on multiple simulated overlapping peaks and on experimentally obtained U and Th radionuclide series spectra verify the practicability of the method, particularly in the low-energy region of the spectrum, providing for the accurate qualitative and quantitative analysis of radionuclides.

Abstract:Two types of wedge-shaped CsI(Tl) crystals were designed to be placed behind an annular double-sided silicon detector to identify light charged-particles with the ΔE−E method. The properties of the CsI(Tl) detectors with different shapes and sizes were investigated using an α source and a radioactive beam of 15C. The larger crystal was found to have better energy resolution, smaller light output non-uniformity, as well as better particle identification capability, and was finally adopted to form the ΔE-E telescope. The performance of the two types of CsI(Tl) crystals are interpreted based on Geant4 simulation results.

Abstract:A depth of interaction (DOI) detector for gamma-rays has been developed for a high-resolution positron emission tomography (PET) system dedicated to small animal studies. It is well known that different surface treatment on the crystals influences the total light output, and consequently affects the performance of the detectors. In order to optimize the performance of the new proposed DOI detector, we have focused on the comparison of the detectors consisting of narrow LSO crystals with different surface conditions. We observed a significant improvement in crystal identification, energy resolution, time resolution and detector response resolution for constructing detectors using polished crystals compared to those using roughened LSO crystals. The results of this study can provide useful information for LSO detectors to be used in practical PET systems.

Abstract:The inorganic CsI(Tl) crystal scintillator is a candidate served as an anti-compton detector for China Dark matter EXperiment (CDEX). Studying the intrinsic radiopurity of CsI(Tl) crystal is an issue of major importance. The timing, energy and spatial correlations, as well as the capability of pulse shape discrimination provide powerful methods for the measurement of intrinsic radiopurities. The experimental design, detector performance and event-selection algorithms are described. A total of 359*3 kg-days data from three prototypes of CsI(Tl) crystals were taken at China Jinping underground laboratory where offers a good shielding environment. The contamination levels of internal isotopes from Cs-137, Th-232 and U-238 series, as well as the upper bounds of U-235 series are reported. Identification of the whole alpha8 peaks from U/Th decay chains and derivation of those corresponding quenching factors are achieved.

Abstract:Large-sized CsI(Tl) single crystals, ~ 100 mm × 350 mm, have been grown successfully, and this CsI(Tl) coupled with PD has been successfully utilized at RIBLL (the Radioactive Ion Beam Line in Lanzhou) to measure the energy of heavy ions as a stopping detector. The performances of CsI(Tl) detector coupled with PD and APD have been tested and compared, including the temperature dependence of scintillating light yield.

Abstract:A dark matter search experiment is being carried out with ultra-low energy HPGe detector at Y2L underground laboratory in Korea. Before the system was set up, the active shielding, CsI(Tl) anti-Compton detector, was studied for its performance. By using some radioactive source and recorded data with an FADC, the pulse shape was studied to get a better energy resolution and further PSD method application. The relative light output of crystal at different particle incident positions were compared for setting the threshold for CsI(Tl) detector. The internal background of the crystal was measured with an HPGe detector and the content of Cs-137 and Cs-134 isotopes were obtained. An about 18-day test run has been finished and the veto efficiency of CsI crystal anti-Compton detector is about 31% and the event rate of background spectrum of HPGe detector is about 133cpd. Further methods have to be explored to suppress the background level.

Abstract:A large NaI(Tl) detection system was developed to address the increasing demand for high detection efficiency and high energy resolution detectors across various applications. Through Geant4 simulation and experimental research, critical characteristics of the detector prototype were examined, encompassing energy response, energy nonlinearity, and energy resolution. Given the substantial impact of variations in Tl concentration and the complex process of photon propagation on the detection performance of large NaI(Tl) crystals, the detection efficiency and energy resolution with the radioactive source placed at different incident spots were studied to evaluate its spatial response uniformity. The results demonstrate that the detector's energy response range spans from 50 keV to 3 MeV with an energy nonlinearity of 1.5%. The developed large NaI(Tl) detection system achieved an overall energy resolution of 7.93%, along with excellent uniformity in its resolution and detection efficiency, satisfying the application requirements for large dimensions and high detection efficiency.

Abstract:Abstract The intrinsic characteristics of the monolithic crystal detector are spatially inconsistent, which leads to the position dependence of the detector on the energy response of the γ-ray as well as the peak shift of the response spectrum of the detector, that is, the “position-energy” shift. The “position-energy” shift will cause the energy resolution of the detector to deteriorate and affect the energy linearity of the detector. Thus, a crucial challenge in enhancing the position consistency of detector energy response, improving energy resolution, and ensuring accurate isotope identification is the reduction or elimination of this “position-energy” offset. The “position-energy” response correction method is proposed in this paper to improve the position consistency of detector energy response. Firstly, Monte Carlo simulation is used to model monolithic LaBr 3 (Ce) crystal detectors of different sizes. Secondly, the effective detection region of the detector model is evenly divided into 25 blocks, then the spectral peak position of each incident region is extracted, and the spectral peak correction function matrix of 25 incident regions and the center position is established. Finally, 25 incident regional peaks are modified according to the modified function matrix, so that the spectral peaks in each region are consistent with the peaks in the center, and the modified spectral responses of the detector are obtained. The simulation results show that this method can effectively solve the “position-energy” migration problem of monolithic crystal detectors of different sizes and improve the peak consistency of each detector region. The energy resolution of the 662 keV characteristic peak of the Cs-137 point source can be improved from 4.5% to 3.9%, and the linear deviation of energy can be reduced from 2.1% to 1.2%.

Abstract:We present methods to improve the energy resolution of single channel, room-temperature Cadmium-Zinc-Telluride (CZT) detectors. A new preamplifier design enables the acquisition of the actual transient current from the crystals and straightforward data analysis methods yield unprecedented energy resolution for our test-detectors. These consist of an eV-CAPture Plus crystal as standard and 1 cm cube Frisch collar crystals created in-house from low-grade coplanar grid detectors. Energy resolutions of 1.9% for our collar detectors and 0.8% for the eV crystal at 662 keV were obtained. The latter compares favourably to the best existing energy resolution results from pixel detectors.

Abstract:The inorganic crystal scintillator CsI(Tl) has been used for low energy neutrino and Dark Matter experiments, where the intrinsic radiopurity is an issue of major importance. Low-background data were taken with a CsI(Tl) crystal array at the Kuo-Sheng Reactor Neutrino Laboratory. The pulse shape discrimination capabilities of the crystal, as well as the temporal and spatial correlations of the events, provide powerful means of measuring the intrinsic radiopurity of 137Cs as well as the 235U, 238U and 232Th series. The event selection algorithms are described, with which the decay half-lives of 218Po, 214Po, 220Rn, 216Po and 212Po were derived. The measurements of the contamination levels, their concentration gradients with the crystal growth axis, and the uniformity among different crystal samples, are reported. The radiopurity in the 238U and 232Th series are comparable to those of the best reported in other crystal scintillators. Significant improvements in measurement sensitivities were achieved, similar to those from dedicated massive liquid scintillator detector. This analysis also provides in situ measurements of the detector performance parameters, such as spatial resolution, quenching factors, and data acquisition dead time. Abstract:Two types of wedge-shaped CsI(Tl)s were designed to be placed behind the annular double-sided silicon detectors (ADSSDs) to identify the light charged particles with the $\Delta E-E$ method. The properties of CsI(Tl)s with different shapes and sizes, such as energy resolution, light output non-uniformity and particle identification capability, were compared by using a $\alpha$-source and a radioactive beam of $^{15}$C. The big-size CsI(Tl) was finally adopted to form the $\Delta E-E$ telescope due to better properties. The property differences of these two types of CsI(Tl)s can be interpreted based on the Geant4 simulation results.

Abstract:The potential merits of CsI(Tl) scintillating crystals for Dark Matter experiments make it a subject of recent interest. The scattering signatures by neutrons on a CsI(Tl) detector were studied using a neutron beam generated by a 13 MV Tandem accelerator. The energy spectra of nuclear recoils from 7 keV to 132 keV were measured, and their quenching factors for scintillating light yield were derived. The data represents the first confirmation of the Optical Model predictions on neutron elastic scatterings with a direct measurement on the nuclear recoils of heavy nuclei.

Abstract:There are recent interests with CsI(Tl) scintillating crystals for Dark Matter experiments. The key merit is the capability to differentiate nuclear recoil (nr) signatures from the background β/γ-events due to ambient radioactivity on the basis of their different pulse shapes. One of the major experimental challenges is to perform such pulse shape analysis in the statistics-limited domain where the light output is close to the detection threshold. Using data derived from measurements with low-energy γ's and nuclear recoils due to neutron elastic scatterings, it was verified that the pulse shapes between β/γ-events are different. Several methods of pulse shape discrimination (PSD) are studied, and their relative merits are compared. Full digitization of the pulse shapes is crucial to achieve good discrimination. Advanced software techniques with mean time, neural network and likelihood ratios give rise to satisfactory performance, and are superior to the conventional Double Charge method commonly applied at higher energies. PSD becomes effective starting at a light yield of about 20 photo-electrons. This corresponds to a detection threshold of about 5keV electron-equivalence energy, or 40–50keV recoil kinetic energy, in realistic experiments.

Abstract:Detection of dark matter using CsI(Tl) scintillating crystal as the detector has gathered more and more interests. In this paper, the quenching factor of nuclear recoils induced by incident neutron beam was measured based on Pulse Shape Discrimination (PSD) method to identify events of nuclear recoils from background. It is shown that the quenching factor increases with the decreased recoil energy in the range of 7 keV to 132 keV. This result shows the great advantage of CsI(Tl) crystal detector in detecting of dark matter.

Abstract:The capability of Pulse Shape Discrimination (PSD) for recoiled nuclei and electrons with CsI(Tl) crystal has been studied in this article. One parameter "tbar" was used to describe the property of the pulse shapes of recoils and electrons. The study of the quality factor K shows that the capability of PSD becomes weaker when the energies of events decrease, the lowest threshold of about 25 photoelectrons has been obtained for CsI(Tl) crystal detector by PSD.

Abstract:Most gamma-ray scintillation detectors currently in use are made from inorganic materials that have a relatively high electron density. Quite often they are used to build multidetector systems that provide high scintillation light output. The performance of a gamma radiation detector (its detection efficiency) depends on the shape and size of the crystal, as well as on the source-to-detector geometry used. The NaI(Tl) gamma detector exhibits moderate energy resolution but relatively high gamma-ray detection efficiency and fast time response. In this work, the efficiency and resolution of a scintillation hexagonal detector are studied to optimize its response function. This type and size of scintillator were selected to construct a budget-friendly, reconfigurable, easy-to-maintain multidetector system for registering gamma-rays following fission, capture, and inelastic neutron scattering reactions, with reasonably good energy and time resolutions The research results made it possible to establish a geometric solid angle that increases the efficiency of recording gamma-ray radiation of the hexagonal NaI(Tl) scintillation probe under study.
