Abstract:Periodic quasi-perfect sequences are very important in CDMA mobile communication and in stream ciphers.The relation between periodic quasi-perfect sequences and cyclic Hadamard difference sets of type (Ⅱ) is studied,the enumerating formula for periodic quasi-perfect sequences is given,the multiplier groups of some cyclic Hadamard difference sets of type (Ⅱ) are determined,and the numbers of some periodic quasi-perfect sequences corresponding to cyclic Hadamard difference sets of type (Ⅱ) are obtained.

Abstract:Motivated by a connection between semi-regular relative difference sets and mutually unbiased bases, we study relative difference sets with parameters (m,n,m,m/n) in groups of non-prime-power orders. Let p be an odd prime. We prove that there does not exist a (2p,p,2p,2) relative difference set in any group of order 2p^2, and an abelian (4p,p,4p,4) relative difference set can only exist in the group Z"2^2xZ"3^2. On the other hand, we construct a family of non-abelian relative difference sets with parameters (4q,q,4q,4), where q is an odd prime power greater than 9 and q=1(mod4). When q=p is a prime, p9, and p=1(mod4), the (4p,p,4p,4) non-abelian relative difference sets constructed here are genuinely non-abelian in the sense that there does not exist an abelian relative difference set with the same parameters.

Abstract:We find new constructions of infinite families of skew Hadamard difference sets in elementary abelian groups under the assumption of the existence of cyclotomic strongly regular graphs. Our construction is based on choosing cyclotomic classes in finite fields.

Abstract:Let p be a prime larger than 3 and congruent to 3 modulo 4, and let G be the non-abelian group of order p^3 and exponent p. We study the structure of a putative difference set with parameters (p^3,p^3-12,p^3-34) in G which is fixed by a certain element of order p in Aut(G). We then give a construction of skew Hadamard difference set in the group G for each prime p3 that is congruent to 3 modulo 4. This is the first infinite family of non-abelian skew Hadamard difference sets. Finally, we show that the symmetric designs derived from these new difference sets are not isomorphic to the Paley designs.

Abstract:We revisit the old idea of constructing difference sets from cyclotomic classes. Two constructions of skew Hadamard difference sets are given in the additive groups of finite fields by using union of cyclotomic classes of Fq of order N=2p1m, where p1 is a prime and m a positive integer. Our main tools are index 2 Gauss sums, instead of cyclotomic numbers.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that a binary sequence is perfect (resp., quasi-perfect) if and only if its support set for any finite group (not necessarily cyclic) is a Hadamard difference set of type I (resp., type II); and we prove that the kernel of any nonzero linear functional (or the image of any linear transformation A with dim (KerA) = 1) on the linear space GF(2m) over the field GF(2) (excluding 0) is a cyclic Hadamard difference set of type II using Gaussian sums; and we prove that the multiplier group of the above difference set is equal to the Galois group Gal (GF(2m) / GF(2)); and we mention the relationship between the Hadamard transform and the irreducible complex characters.

Abstract:The concept and some preliminary properties of generalized difference sets are proposed.In view of application,generalized difference sets are such a kind of combinato- rial structures whose±1 characteristic sequences have (at most) triple-valued autocorrelation functions.Therefore,generalized difference sets are not only a generalization in the respect of conception,but also have some application backgrounds.In fact,some examples are given, which show that there are some generalized difference sets such that they are neither divisible difference sets,nor relative difference sets.Moreover,some examples are presented here to illustrate that our methods works for obtaining almost perfect sequences.

Abstract:The classical problem of whether mmth-powers with or without zero in a finite field Fq\mathbb {F}_q form a difference set has been extensively studied, and is related to many topics, such as flag transitive finite projective planes. In this paper new necessary and sufficient conditions are established including those via a system of polynomial equations on Gauss sums. The author thereby solves the problem for even qq which is neglected in the literature, and extends the nonexistence list for even mm up to 2222. Moreover, conjectures toward the complete classification are posed.

Abstract:Compared with the perfect complementary sequence sets, quasi-complementary sequence sets (QCSSs) can support more users to work in multicarrier CDMA communications. A near-optimal periodic QCSS is constructed in this paper by using an optimal quaternary sequence set and an almost difference set. With the change of the values of parameters in the almost difference set, the near-optimal QCSS can become asymptotically optimal and the number of users supported by the subcarrier channels in CDMA system has an exponential growth.

Abstract:The circular external difference family and its strong version are of great significance both in theory and in applications. In this paper, we apply the classical cyclotomic construction to the circular external differnece family and exhibit several concrete examples, in particular constructing an infinite family. Furthermore, we prove that all strong circular external differnece families are constructed by patching together several strong external difference families consisting of two subsets, thereby solving the open problem raised by Veitch and Stinson. We also present a new result on the non-existence of a certain type of strong external difference families.

Abstract:Signed difference sets have interesting applications in communications and coding theory. A $(v,k,\lambda)$-difference set in a finite group $G$ of order $v$ is a subset $D$ of $G$ with $k$ distinct elements such that the expressions $xy^{-1}$ for all distinct two elements $x,y\in D$, represent each non-identity element in $G$ exactly $\lambda$ times. A $(v,k,\lambda)$-signed difference set is a generalization of a $(v,k,\lambda)$-difference set $D$, which satisfies all properties of $D$, but has a sign for each element in $D$. We will show some new existence results for signed difference sets by using partial difference sets, product methods, and cyclotomic classes.

Abstract:Cyclotomy, firstly introduced by Gauss, is an important topic in Mathematics since it has a number of applications in number theory, combinatorics, coding theory and cryptography. Depending on \begin{document}$ v $\end{document} prime or composite, cyclotomy on a residue class ring \begin{document}$ {\mathbb{Z}}_{v} $\end{document} can be divided into classical cyclotomy or generalized cyclotomy. Inspired by a foregoing work of Zeng et al. [40], we introduce a generalized cyclotomy of order \begin{document}$ e $\end{document} on the ring \begin{document}$ {\rm GF}(q_1)\times {\rm GF}(q_2)\times \cdots \times {\rm GF}(q_k) $\end{document}, where \begin{document}$ q_i $\end{document} and \begin{document}$ q_j $\end{document} (\begin{document}$ i\neq j $\end{document}) may not be co-prime, which includes classical cyclotomy as a special case. Here, \begin{document}$ q_1 $\end{document}, \begin{document}$ q_2 $\end{document}, \begin{document}$ \cdots $\end{document}, \begin{document}$ q_k $\end{document} are powers of primes with an integer \begin{document}$ e|(q_i-1) $\end{document} for any \begin{document}$ 1\leq i\leq k $\end{document}. Then we obtain some basic properties of the corresponding generalized cyclotomic numbers. Furthermore, we propose three classes of partitioned difference families by means of the generalized cyclotomy above and \begin{document}$ d $\end{document}-form functions with difference balanced property. Afterwards, three families of optimal constant composition codes from these partitioned difference families are obtained, and their parameters are also summarized.

Abstract:Based on the theory of Galois rings of characteristic 4, a new class of quaternary sequences with period 2p(2) is established over Z(4) using generated cyclotomy, where p is an odd prime. The linear complexity of the new sequences is determined. Results show that the sequences have larger linear complexity and resist the attack by Berlekamp-Massey (B-M) algorithm. It is a good sequence from the viewpoint of cryptography.

Abstract:Sequence pairs with good correlation can be applied in many practical systems. In this Letter, the authors construct a class of p-ary sequence pairs of period 2 p 2 by interleaving two p-ary sequences derived from Fermat quotient, where p is an odd prime. In the authors' construction, sequence pairs have almost perfect correlation.
