The effects of intra-aortic balloon pump in coronary stenting for high risk patients

Abstract:Objective To evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of intra aortic balloon supporting in coronary interventions for high risk patients with coronary artery disease(CAD).Methods Sixteen high risk CAD patients accepted percutaneous coronary intervention assisted by intra aortic balloon pumping together with clinical variables, procedural and follow up informations were recorded and evaluated. Results All patients presented with severe left ventricular dysfunction, multi vessel disease and high jeopardy scores. 12 patients acquired complete revascularization. Mean duration of balloon pumping was (31±17) minutes. Aortic diastolic and mean pressures were increased during balloon pumping [diastolic:(69±11)mmHg pre.vs (131±15)mmHg post.; mean:(82±13)mmHg pre.vs (111±7)mmHg post., P 0.001]. With average of 2 years follow up, one patient died from pump failure but no MACE reaching survival rate of 75%. The ejection fraction and the NYHA grade were significantly improved.Conclusions Intra aortic balloon pumping is a safe and effective method in treating high risk CAD patients obtaining rather fare prognosis.
