Abstract:This study discussed about the current state of the transmission and development of Chinese ethnic folk dance. China is a multiethnic country composing of 56 ethnic groups, and the masses of each ethnic group have a variety of folk dances showing the style of the ethnic group. Therefore, it is very difficult to discuss about the ethnic folk dances of China, a very big country, in an essay. Thus, this study looked at Chinese ethnic folk dance from a broader perspective. This study looked at the concepts of ethnic folk dance that are being developed in the Chinese dance circles, and investigated and discussed the aspects of dance transmission and development. At present, Chinese ethnic folk dance may be considered largely in two dimensions. The first is the dimension of transmission, and the second is the dimension of development. As for the aspect in the dimension of transmission, it concerns Chinese ethnic folk dance as yuanshengtai transmitted from traditional society. The yuanshengtai Chinese ethnic folk dances are protected as National Intangible Cultural Heritage at the national level, and are being transmitted as roots for maintaining ethnic identity in the modern society. As for the aspect in the dimension of development, it concerns Chinese ethnic folk dances that have developed into the contemporary ethnic folk dances. They are the XueYuanPai (學院派) Chinese ethnic folk dance, which has been established as the yuansu jiaoxue (元素敎學) system, and Chinese ethnic folk dance as art. These advanced Chinese ethnic folk dances are sublimated in the contemporary art in the modern society, arouse nostalgia in the masses in China, and thus grant qualitative value to human life.
