Abstract:Objective:To analyze the characteristics of phacoemulsification performed in the senile cataract patients elder than 90 years and factors related to visual outcome in those patients. Methods:Phacoemulsification were performed for a consecutive case series of 22 cataract eyes of 17 senile patients elder than 90 years. Preoperative examinations and visual outcomes were recorded. Results:The nuclear hardness were grade Ⅱ in 2 eyes(9.1%),grade Ⅲ 11 eyes(50%),grade Ⅳ 6 eyes(27.3%),grade Ⅴ 3 eyes(13.6%). On first day postoperatively,2 eyes achieved an uncorrected visual acuity of 20/25~20/20,5 eyes 20/40~20/30,8 eyes 20/60~20/50,6 eyes 20/200~20/80,1 eye less than 20/200. Cornea of 15 eyes(68.2%) were clear,6 eyes(27.3%) had slight striae of decemet' membrane,1 eye had partially endothelium opacity(4.5%). Fundus:glaucomatous optic nerve atrophy was found in 1 eye,age related macular degeneration in 10 eyes, myopic macular pathological changes in 1 eye,10 eyes normal. Conclusion:The age greater than 90 years does not mean hard nuclear. Those patients are able to achieve relatively good visual outcome performed by skillful surgeon. It is also important to exam the patient carefully and evaluate visual affecting factors before operation.
