Abstract:Aggregation generally quenches the light emissions of chromophoric molecules. In this review, we demonstrate that 1,1-disubstituted 2,3,4,5-tetraphenyl siloles and 2,5-difunctionalized siloles as well as their polymers exhibit the opposite behaviors. Instead of quenching, aggregation has greatly boosted their photoluminescence quantum yields by up to two orders of magnitude, turning them from faint fluorophores into strong emitters. Such “abnormal” phenomenon of “aggregation-induced emission (AIE)” is attributed to restricted intramolecular rotations of the peripheral phenyl rings against the central silole core, which block the nonradiative channel via the rotational energy relaxation processes and effectively populate the radiative decay of the excitons. Utilizing such a novel effect, siloles and their polymers find an array of applications as: sensors for chemicals, explosives, pH, and biomacromolecules (proteins, DNAs and RNAs), indicators for determining CMC and monitoring layer-by-layer self-assembling, biocompatible fluorogens for cell imaging, visualizing agent for DNA gel electrophoresis, biolabels for immunoassay, stimuli-responsive organic nanomaterials, magnetic fluorescent nanoparticles for potential bio-imaging and -separation, and outstanding materials for efficient OLEDs and PV cells.

Abstract:Benzene-cored luminogens with multiple triarylvinyl units are designed and synthesized. These propeller-shaped molecules are nonemissive when dissolved in good solvents, but become highly emissive when aggregated in poor solvents or in the solid state, showing the novel phenomenon of aggregation-induced emission. Restriction of intramolecular motion is identified as the main cause for this effect. Thanks to their high solid-state fluorescence quantum yields (up to unity) and high thermal and morphological stabilities, light-emitting diodes with the luminogens as emitters give sky-blue to greenish-blue light in high luminance and efficiencies of 10800 cd m-2, 5.8 cd A-1, and 2.7%, respectively. The emissions of the nanoaggregates of the luminogens can be quenched exponentially by picric acid, or selectively by Ru3+, with quenching constants up to 105 and similar to 2.0 x 105 L mol-1, respectively, making them highly sensitive (and selective) chemosensors for explosives and metal ions.

Abstract:A starburst luminogen (THPSTPA) consisting of a triphenylamine core and 1,1,2,3,4,5-hexaphenylsilole peripheries is designed and synthesized. Whereas it is weakly luminescent when molecularly dissolved in good solvent, it becomes highly emissive when aggregated in poor solvent, exhibiting a novel phenomenon of aggregation-induced emission (AIE). THPSTPA is morphologically and thermally stable, showing high glass transition and thermal degradation temperatures at 150 and 303 degrees C, respectively. The emission of its aggregates can be quenched exponentially by picric acid with a quenching constant up to similar to 7.0 x 10(4) L mol(-1), suggesting that it can work as a sensitive chemosensor for explosive detection. Abstract:It is found that the fluorescence of aliphatic poly(amido amine)s including linear and hyperbranched ones can be dramatically enhanced by simple aggregation of polymer chains, attributing to the formation of a variety of intra- and interchain clusters with shared lone-pair electrons and the restriction of intramolecular motions. Thanks to the combination of strong solid fluorescence and excellent biocompatibility, these non-conjugated polymers become promising candidates for bioimaging such as bacterial detection. This finding not only extends the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) systems from conjugated compounds to non-conjugated materials, which expands the bioapplication range of AIE systems, but also sheds light on the exploration of novel unconventional luminogens.

Abstract:Nonconventional luminophores without long conjugated structures have received increasing attention due to their outstanding biocompatibility, easy preparation, environmental friendliness, and potential applications in sensing and imaging. The phenomena of aggregation emission, such as concentration-enhanced emission, aggregation-induced emission, excitation-dependent luminescence, and prevailing phosphorescence, are caused by molecular conformation and molecular packing. Herein, we briefly review the traditional luminophores represented by fused aromatic rings, and introduce the revolutionary concept of aggregation induced emission (AIE) in non-traditional luminescence and its applications in optics, biology, and other fields. The concept of the AIE can be applied to understand this phenomena in the field of non-traditional luminescence, in which non-aromatic systems contain electron-releasing and withdrawing parts, such as amine, amide, nitrile, imine, hydroxyl, carbonyl, etc. Moreover, we also address two mechanisms of cluster triggered emission (CTE) and crosslink-enhanced emission (CEE). Based on the reviewed data, we can conclude that the electron overlap caused by aggregation and through-space conjugation (TSC) have a profound impact on unconventional luminescence. We believe that this review would serve as a useful guide to design and application of unconventional luminophores, while the current challenges and future perspectives are also discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we report distinct enhancement of surface-state emissions (SSEs) of colloidal CdSe quantum dots (QDs) via coupling to localized plasmons (LPs) in Ag nanostructures. The roles of oleic acid (OA) ligand on QDs in the formation of Ag nanostructures and in the intense enhancement of SSEs of CdSe QDs are explored. We find that OA ligand on CdSe QDs plays a critical role in modifying the morphology of the contacted Ag, which consequently impacts the coupling of QD emitters with LPs in Ag. A systematic study of size effect of QDs on coupling of SSEs with LPs shows that as-deposited small Ag particles favorably enhance the SSEs of small-size CdSe QDs. The OA ligand on QDs yields better Ag crystallinity and clear corners during the annealing process; therefore, it promotes reshaping of small Ag particles into larger ones, favorable to enhance the SSEs of large-size CdSe QDs. The annealed QDs/Ag hybrid structures are more stable than the unannealed ones due to the loss of the OA ligand in the heating process. The selective coupling of QD emitters with LPs in Ag nanostructures allows feasible realization of microscale fluorescent color patterns. The approach of OA-assisted modification of plasmonic properties of Ag nanostructures provides a new route to synthesizing bright luminescence materials and devices that use colloidal QDs.

Abstract:Abstract Nonconventional luminescent materials have been rising stars in organic luminophores due to their intrinsic characteristics, including water‐solubility, biocompatibility, and environmental friendliness and have shown potential applications in diverse fields. As an indispensable branch of nonconventional luminescent materials, polysiloxanes, which consist of electron‐rich auxochromic groups, have exhibited outstanding photophysical properties due to the unique silicon atoms. The flexible Si‐O bonds benefit the aggregation, and the empty 3d orbitals of Si atoms can generate coordination bonds including N → Si and O → Si, altering the electron delocalization of the material and improving the luminescent purity. Herein, we review the recent progress in luminescent polysiloxanes with different topologies and discuss the challenges and perspectives. With an emphasis on the driving force for the aggregation and the mechanism of tuned emissions, the role of Si atoms played in the nonconventional luminophores is highlighted. This review may provide new insights into the design of nonconventional luminescent materials and expand their further applications in sensing, biomedicine, lighting devices, etc.

Abstract:Nonconventional biomacromolecular luminogens have attracted extensive interest due to their fundamental importance and potential applications in diverse areas. To explore novel luminogens and, moreover, to gain deeper insights into their emission mechanism, we study the emission behaviors of sodium alginate (SA), a natural anionic polysaccharide composed of mannuronic (M) and guluronic acids (G). We find that the luminescence from aqueous SA solutions exhibits distinct concentration enhanced emission and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics. Meanwhile, the ratio of M/G also matters. Rheological measurements reveal the distinct regimes of the solutions, which are consistent with the observed emission, indicative of strong association between the chain entanglement and emission. Moreover, we observe persistent room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) in the amorphous SA solids, which is a rare case even in pure organic aromatic luminogens. Such unique emission can be remarkably enhanced via coordination with Ca2+ ions. These emission behaviors can be well rationalized by the clustering-triggered emission (CTE) mechanism. Namely, the emission is caused by the electron cloud overlap due to the clustering of oxygen atoms and carboxylate units, together with conformation rigidification. Owing to its biocompatibility, intrinsic emission, and, moreover, persistent RTP, SA shows great potential for anticounterfeiting, encryption, intracellular imaging, and so on.
Unraveling the substituent group effects on the emission properties of fluorenone derivatives

Abstract:Elucidating the structure–property relationship is vital for developing organic luminescent materials with excellent properties and performance optimization. Herein, we designed and synthesized three types of fluorenone-based molecules named FO-Ph , FO-Na and FO-An , with similar structures but different sizes of substituent groups (benzene, naphthalene and anthracene). This slight modification resulted in significantly different optical properties of luminogens in dilute solutions and powders. FO-Ph as an aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) emitter displayed strong emissions in solution; moreover, after the addition of a poor solution, the fluorescence intensity of FO-Ph gradually decreased. On the contrary, FO-Na displayed aggregation-induced emission enhancement properties, and FO-An was non-emissive in solutions but displayed enhanced emission owing to its molecular aggregation, indicating that FO-An comprises an AIE-active molecule. The characterization of the photophysical properties, theoretical calculations and an X-ray single crystal analysis showed that the emission properties of the three compounds could be affected by the size of substituent groups, twisted geometry and molecular packing modes. The three fluorenone luminogens exhibited different force-induced emission enhancement properties. Moreover, FO-Ph can be used as a water detector and showing high sensitivity. This study elucidates the AIE and ACQ phenomena of fluorenone complexes and provides effective ways for developing organic luminescent materials.

Abstract:Fluorescent silica nanoparticles (FSNPs) with efficient light emission, colloidal stability, and size tunability are fabricated by one-pot, two-step Stober and reverse microemulsion techniques. Tetraphenylethene (TPE)- and silole-functionalized siloxanes are facilely synthesized by click reactions and their sol-gel reactions followed by reactions with tetraethoxysilane generate FSNPs with core-shell structures. The FSNPs are uniformly sized with smooth surfaces, and show high surface charges and hence excellent colloidal stability. UV irradiation of ethanol solutions of the FSNPs gives strong blue and green light at 474 and 486 nm in high fluorescence quantum yields, thanks to the novel aggregation-induced emission attributes of the TPE and silole aggregates in the hybrid nanoparticles. The FSNPs are benign to living cells and function as fluorescent visualizers for intracellular imaging of HeLa cells.

Abstract:This paper reports the design, synthesis, and theoretical modeling of two‐photon properties of a new class of chromophore that exhibits enhanced two‐photon absorption (TPA) and subsequently generated strong up‐converted emission in nanoaggregate forms. This chromophore utilizes the basic structural unit of 9,10‐bis[4′‐(4″‐aminostyryl)styryl]anthracene that exhibits large internal rotation in the monomer form in organic solvents, whereby the fluorescence is greatly reduced. In nanoaggregates formed in water, the internal rotation is considerably hindered, leading to significant increases of TPA and fluorescence quantum yield. Theoretical modeling of the conformational structure and dynamics has utilized a semiempirical pm3 formalism. The TPA cross sections of the monomer and the aggregate states have been calculated on the basis of the quadratic response theory applied to a single‐determinant self‐consistent field reference state making use of a split‐valence 6‐31G* basis set.

Abstract:The stimuli-responsive luminescence property plays a crucial role in the development of mechanoluminescent materials. Here, we designed and synthesized four o -carborane-based aggregation-induced emission molecules, two of which, CB-Ph-P and CB-Ph-PAn , exhibited multiple solid-state fluorescence emissions. Upon mechanical stimulation, the recrystallization solid of CB-Ph-P caused a bathochromic shift in its fluorescence emission from 423 nm to 608 nm. Similarly, CB-Ph-PAn exhibits a transition in fluorescence emission wavelength from 393 nm to 623 nm when in the solid state. In order to gain insight into the mechanism behind their luminescent behavior, we performed analyses including powder X-ray diffraction, photophysical properties, thermal properties, and single-crystal structure analysis. It is deemed that the polymorphism may be related to different weak interactions, packing modes and torsion angles.

Abstract:Most nonconventional luminogens enjoy good water solubility and biocompatibility, showing unique application prospects in fields like biological imaging. Although clustering-triggered emission (CTE) mechanisms have been proposed to explain such emissions, it has not been thoroughly elucidated, which limits their development and application. Herein, the photoluminescence properties of polyacrylamide prepared by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization aqueous solution are utilized to further investigate the effects of changes in concentration, in order to elucidate the emission mechanism through transmission electron microscopy (TEM), small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and theoretical calculation. The results showed that the size distribution, morphology, and distance between the polymer clusters formed in the water solution are successfully correlated with the cluster emission centers. The emission mechanism of nonconventional luminogens solutions is more clearly and intuitively elucidated, which has a promoting effect on the emission and application of this field. It provides a strategy a strategy to clarify the CTE mechanism of nonconventional luminogens solution more clearly.

Abstract:Developing red fluorescence emitters with simple structures via convenient synthetic routes is highly desirable yet challenging. Herein, two novel donor–acceptor-type red emitters, DCFOPV-TPA and SCFOPV-TPA, featuring the intramolecular charge transfer effect were designed by integrating triphenylamine and trifluoromethyl into a CN-substituted oligo(p-phenylene vinylene) backbone. Both chromophores exhibited aggregation-induced enhanced emission and solvatochromic behavior. Moreover, DCFOPV-TPA also displayed reversible mechanofluorochromic properties under external force.

Abstract:Organic light-emitting materials have attracted considerable attention because of their promising applications in diverse areas. Most fluorophores emit brightly in either dilute solutions or aggregate states; the former generally suffer from aggregation-caused quenching problem, and the latter encounter intensity loss at low concentrations. Herein, we propose a new strategy to overcome these dilemmas by balancing the planar and distorted structures of terphenyl-based luminogens and obtain three luminogens, 2PB-AC, 2Me2PB-AC, and 2T2PB-AC, with bright emission in both solution and aggregate states. Among them, 2PB-AC shows absolute photoluminescence quantum yields (Phi(PL)) higher than 90% in both tetrahydrofuran solution (90.2%) and aggregate states (92.7% for powder and 95.3% for crystal). Thus, 2PB-AC could be an efficient probe to realize dual-channel explosive detection in both solution and aggregate states. Moreover, it could be used to image live-cell lipid droplets at a wide range of concentrations. In addition, benefiting from its thermodynamically favorable intersystem crossing process, 2Me2PB-AC could be doped in polymethyl methacrylate matrix to provide efficient room-temperature phosphorescence. Thus, this work provides a feasible strategy for the design of luminogens with highly efficient emission in both solution and aggregate states, greatly facilitating and broadening their practical applications. Unveiling the Aggregation-Induced Emission (AIE) Mechanism and the Effect of Substituents on Luminescence Properties for Salicylaldehyde Azine Derivatives with Intramolecular Hydrogen Bond

Abstract:In recent years, salicylaldehyde azine derivatives with high quantum yield and large Stokes shift for aggregation-induced emission (AIE) have attracted wide attention. To understand the fluorescence quenching and AIE mechanism, as well as reveal the effect of distinct substituents on the luminescence properties, herein we carried out a comparative study on two salicylaldehyde azine derivatives (namely, DPAS and FAS) using the QM(MS-CASPT2//TD-DFT) and ONIOM(QM:MM) calculations. Computational results show that the ESIPT processes for DPAS and FAS are unfavorable both in THF solution and in the solid phase (the barriers for DPAS are 14.5 and 19.6 kcal/mol, respectively, and those for FAS are 17.1 and 16.9 kcal/mol, respectively). The fluorescent quenching in solution is caused by the N–N assisted CN double bond rotation. Moreover, the participation of an intramolecular H-bond in solution is favorable for the nonradiative transitions, while the molecular motion with a hula-twist mode in crystal correspondingly prompts the radiative transitions back to the ground state. Compared with diphenyl-substituted DPAS, fluorenyl-substituted FAS is more difficult to undergo nonradiative relaxation in solution, resulting in a slightly stronger emission; however, FAS in the solid phase has a lower S1–S0 gap (1.24 eV) for the fluorescence emission structure and a stronger π–π stacking interaction in the face-to-face stacking pattern, which leads to an overall lower fluorescence quantum yield. Our study on the AIE mechanism and structure–property relationship of salicylaldehyde azine derivatives is of great significance for understanding such compounds and developing high-performance AIE molecules.

Abstract:<p>Nonaromatic photoluminescent polymers have attracted great attention due to their intriguing photophysical properties and promising implications in optoelectronic and biological areas. The luminescence from these nonconventional luminophores can be well rationalized by the clustering‐triggered emission mechanism. Sulfur, although as an n‐electron‐rich element with big radius, is not been widely utilized in construction of nonconventional luminophores despite of its potential competitiveness in nonaromatic photoluminescent polymers. Herein, the "click" type Michael polyaddition is utilized to construct sulfur‐bearing nonconventional luminophores, and two sulfur enriched nonaromatic poly(thioether sulfone)s (PES) are obtained, which demonstrate fluorescence‐phosphorescence dual emission. More investigations concerning the monomer of bis(vinylsulfonyl)methane are further proceeded to support acquired results. Finally, the application of explosive detection by the prepared PES is also conducted.</p>

Abstract:Abstract Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) technology has gained wide acceptance in recent years. The popularity of OLED is attributed to the superior properties of organic luminescent materials such as low biotoxicity, outstanding optical properties and easy preparation and modification. Traditional organic luminescent materials usually suffer from aggregation-caused quenching (ACQ) effect and can be hardly utilized in aqueous or solid conditions, while the compounds exhibiting aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property can overcome this limitation. Thus, AIE luminogens have attracted wide attention in the past ten years. Based on the research on the mechanism, classification and application of AIE compounds, a novel aggregation induced luminescence compound based on triphenylamine structure was synthesized and characterized. Our work suggested and confirmed that the synthesized compound showed apparent aggregation-induced emission (AIE) property.
