Abstract:A new type of core-shell upconversion nanoparticles which can be effectively excited at 795 nm has been designed and synthesized through spatially confined doping of neodymium (Nd(3+)) ions. The use of Nd(3+) ions as sensitizers facilitates the energy transfer and photon upconversion of a series of lanthanide activators (Er(3+), Tm(3+), and Ho(3+)) at a biocompatible excitation wavelength (795 nm) and also significantly minimizes the overheating problem associated with conventional 980 nm excitation. Importantly, the core-shell design enabled high-concentration doping of Nd(3+) (~0 mol %) in the shell layer and thus markedly enhanced the upconversion emission from the activators, providing highly attractive luminescent biomarkers for bioimaging without autofluorescence and concern of overheating.

Abstract:The past few years witnessed extensive emergence of short-wavelength upconversion (UC) emission stimulated photoactivation studies. However, low efficiency of multi-photon process greatly limits further applications. Here, ultraviolet (UV) upconversion emissions originated from multi-photon process of Tm3+ were studied with Nd3+-sensitized NaGdF4:Yb, Tm@NaYF4:Nd, Yb core/shell nanoparticles. Crucial factors, including the contents of sensitizers Nd3+, Yb3+ and activator Tm3+, as well as the excitation power density were investigated based on the UV emission. Spectral results showed that high contents of Nd3+ in shell region up to 50% (molar fraction hereafter) and Yb3+ of 10% were essential to mediate the energy transfer via the core/shell interface and facilitate multi-photon UV emissions. Compared with segregated activator and sensitizer, a core/shell strategy with isolated Nd3+ in the shell was important for higher UV emission. Although the upconverting process was initiated with Nd3+→Yb3+, the short-wavelength emissions were intrinsically coming from four- and five-photon process. The optimized nanoparticles were found to be able to manipulate the configuration transition of azobenzene molecules, and it could be promising for near infrared (NIR) triggered optical switches applications.

Abstract:Exploration of upconversion luminescence from lanthanide emitters through energy migration has profound implications for fundamental research and technology development. However, energy migration-mediated upconversion requires stringent experimental conditions, such as high power excitation and special migratory ions in the host lattice, imposing selection constraints on lanthanide emitters. Here we demonstrate photon upconversion of diverse lanthanide emitters by harnessing triplet exciton-mediated energy relay. Compared with gadolinium-based systems, this energy relay is less dependent on excitation power and enhances the emission intensity of Tb3+ by 158-fold. Mechanistic investigations reveal that emission enhancement is attributable to strong coupling between lanthanides and surface molecules, which enables fast triplet generation (<100ps) and subsequent near-unity triplet transfer efficiency from surface ligands to lanthanides. Moreover, the energy relay approach supports long-distance energy transfer and allows upconversion modulation in microstructures. These findings enhance fundamental understanding of energy transfer at molecule-nanoparticle interfaces and open exciting avenues for developing hybrid, high-performance optical materials. Photon upconversion in lanthanide-doped nanoparticles enables important technological developments. Here the authors demonstrate a mechanism leading to enhanced upconversion emission in core-shell nanoparticles, and long-distance energy transfer between nanoparticles, through triplet state population of an organic surface ligand.

Abstract:Lanthanide doped upconversion nanocrystals, showing bright future in diverse fields, are typically excited by approximate to 700-1000 nm light when Nd3+ and Yb3+ are used as sensitizers. Thus far, extending the excitation range of upconversion nanocrystals is still a formidable challenge. Herein, a new type of upconversion nanocrystals is reported, using Er3+ ions as sensitizers, which can be excited by 1532 nm light located in the second near-infrared biological window. Through Er3+ sensitization, upconversion emission from a series of activators, including Nd3+, Ho3+, Eu3+, and Tm3+, is obtained and can be modulated by Yb3+ codoping. In addition, Er3+ sensitized photon upconversion of Ho3+ and Tm3+ can be further enhanced by shell coating. It is found that Er3+ sensitized upconversion processes are mainly dependent on the energy transfer between Er3+ ions and activators. Considering the demonstration of anticounterfeiting by using this newly designed nanocrystal, it is anticipated that these results can bring more opportunities to upconversion nanomaterials in other aspects, ranging from lasing to super resolution imaging.

Abstract:Spectroscopic properties of YPO4 nanoparticles doped with Yb3+, Tm3+, and Er3+ ions have been studied in detail. These multiemitting materials are promising not only for photonic or electronic use but especially for anticounterfeiting applications. The nanopowders are synthesized by the facile coprecipitation method with annealing in the air atmosphere at 1000 °C. The structural and morphological studies reveal pure tetragonal nanocrystallites with an average size of 20–30 nm. Most interestingly, under NIR excitation, the samples exhibit intense upconversion (UC) luminescence where the color can be tuned by changing the laser source, switching the excitation wavelengths between 800, 975, 1208, and 1532 nm, double‐wavelength excitation, and by changing laser power density. As a result, a very high color shift, being the result of intensity changes in the emission bands of Er3+ (green and red) and Tm3+ (blue and red) is obtained. The luminescence lifetimes, temporal evolution, and the pump power dependences are also measured to propose the mechanisms responsible for the observed UC emission.

Abstract:Lanthanide-based upconversion molecular complexes have potential application in diverse fields and attracted considerable research interest in recent years. However, the similar coordination reactivity of lanthanide ions has constrained the designability of target molecule with well-defined structure, and many attempts obtained statistical mixtures. Herein, an ion-paired Yb-Eu heteronuclear complex [Eu(TpPy)2][Yb(ND)4] (TpPy = tris[3-(2-pyridyl)pyrazolyl]hydroborate, ND = 3-cyano-2-methyl-1,5-naphthyridin-4-olate) was designed and synthesized. Thanks to the radius difference between Eu3+ (1.07 Å) and Yb3+ (0.98 Å) ions, the hexadentate TpPy ligand was selected to coordinate with Eu3+ and the Yb3+ with a smaller radius was chelated by bidentate ND ligand. As a result, the sites of Eu3+ and Yb3+ in the complex can be clarified by high-resolution mass spectrometry and single-crystal structure analysis. Upon the excitation of Yb3+ at 980 nm, the upconversion emission of Eu3+ was realized through a cooperative sensitization process. Furthermore, [Eu(TpPy)2][Yb(ND)4] demonstrated excellent photostability during continuous high-power density 980 nm laser irradiation, with a LT95 (the time to 95% of the initial emission intensity) of 420 minutes. This work provides the first example of a pure ion-paired Yb-Eu heteronuclear complex upconversion system and may bring insights into rational design of lanthanide-based upconversion molecular complexes.

Abstract:Lanthanide upconversion luminescence in nanoparticles has prompted continuous breakthroughs in information storage, temperature sensing, and biomedical applications, among others. Achieving upconversion luminescence at the molecular scale is still a critical challenge in modern chemistry. In this work, we explored the upconversion luminescence of solution dispersions of co-crystals composed of discrete mononuclear Yb(DBM)(3)Bpy and Eu(DBM)(3)Bpy complexes (DBM: dibenzoylmethane, Bpy: 2,2 '-bipyridine). The 613 nm emission of Eu3+ was observed under excitation of Yb3+ at 980 nm. From the series of molecular assemblies studied, the most intense luminescence was obtained for a 1 : 1 molar ratio of Yb3+ : Eu3+, resulting in a high quantum yield of 0.67 % at 2.1 W cm(-2). The structure and energy transfer mechanism of the assemblies were fully characterized. This is the first example of an Eu3+-based upconverting system composed of two discrete mononuclear lanthanide complexes present as co-crystals in non-deuterated solution.

Abstract:Photon upconversion of lanthanides is an important approach for white light emission, showing great potential in displays, nanophosphors, white light lasers and so on. However, the white light upconversion in previous reports is usually based on the codoping schemes with conventional lanthanide emitters such as Er3+/Tm3+ or Ho3+/Tm3+, of which the performance is limited by the serious quenchable interactions between dopants (e.g., cross relaxation). Here, we report a new mechanistic approach to the white light upconversion by constructing the LiYbF4:Tb@LiGdF4:Yb/Tm@LiYF4:Eu core-shell-shell nanostructure. The use of lithium lanthanide fluoride matrix can improve the doping content of Yb3+ into the host lattice easily with resultant enhancement in the absorption of the excitation energy and subsequent upconversion luminescence. Through combining both interfacial energy transfer (IET) and cooperative sensitization upconversion (CSU), the white light upconverting emission has been realized under 980 nm excitation. Also, the upconversion emission has different lifetime values providing a temporal way to manipulate the upconversion emission colors. Our results offer a new experimental strategy for white light upconversion of lanthanide-doped materials, showing great promise in applications such as anti-counterfeiting.

Abstract:Lanthanide pairs, which can upconvert low energy photons into higher energy photons, are promising for efficient upconversion emission. A typical system with Yb3+ as a sensitizer can convert short NIR into visible/ultraviolet light via energy transfer between lanthanide ions. Such upconverting nanocrystals doped with lanthanide ions have found significant potential in bioimaging, photochemical reactions and energy conversion. This review presents a fundamental understanding of energy transfer in lanthanidesupported photon upconversion. We introduce the emerging progress in excitation selection based on the energy transfer within lanthanide ions or activation from antennae, with an outlook in the development and applications of the lanthanide upconversion emissions.

Abstract:In this work, the energy transfer process and upconversion luminescence properties of NaYF4: Ln3+@NaYF4: Ln3+ (Ln = Yb3+, Er3+, Tm3+) core-shell microcrystals were studied through introducing different Yb3+ ions in core and shell. Compared with Yb3+/Tm3+/Er3+ co-doped NaYF4 microcrystals, the NaYF4:Yb3+/Tm3+@NaYF4: Yb3+/Er3+ core-shell microcrystals displays greater stability spectral characteristics under NIR 980 nm excitation. This is because the core-shell structures can control the excitation energy acquisition channel and avoid interactions between Er3+ and Tm3+ ions. Meanwhile, the luminescence properties of NaYF4@NaYF4 core-shell microcrystals can also be precisely controlled by changing concentrations of Yb3+ ions in the core and shell, respectively. The experimental results further indicate that upconversion emission of microcrystals can also be precisely controlled by constructing core-shell structures. The multicolor emission core-shell microcrystals may have great potential in display, anti-counterfeiting and micro-photoelectric technology applications.

Abstract:The Y2O2S:Er3+@Y2O2S:Yb3+,Tm3+ core-shell upconversion (UC) nanoparticles with average diameter of 95 nm were synthesized by the homogeneous co-precipitation method combining with the solid-gas sulfidation route. The increases of nanocrystaline size after the shell coating was observed both in the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) measurements. This indicates the composition homogeneity core-shell Y2O2S nanocrystals. Meanwhile, the luminescence of both the Er3+ and Tm3+ ions are realized for the first time in the novel core-shell Y2O2S:Er3+@Y2O2S:Yb3+,Tm3+ nanoparticles under the excitations of both 980 and 1550 nm. When excited by a 980 nm laser diode, the Y2O2S:Er3+@Y2O2S:Yb3+,Tm3+ phosphor exhibits blue (approximate to 475 nm), green (approximate to 548 nm) and red (approximate to 670 nm) emissions in the visible region, which correspond to the (1)G(4) -> H-3(6) transition of Tm(3+)ions, S-4(3/2), H-2(11/2) -> I-4(15/2) and F-4(9/2) -> I-4(15/2) transitions of Er3+ ions, respectively. The very strong emission at the near infrared (NIR) region is mainly due to the H-3(4) -> H-3(6) transition of Tm3+ ions. The emission from both of Era} and Tm3+ ions under 980 nm excitation reveals the energy transfers of Yb3+ -> Tm3+ within the shell layer and Yb3+ -> Er3+ between the shell and the core. When pumping at 1550 nm, although only Er3+ ions can efficiently absorb the excitation energy, the strong UC emissions from Tm3+ ions were also observed. This is owing to the energy transfer between the core and the shell through Er3+ -> Yb3+ -> Tm3+ ions. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Photon upconversion is promising for applications such as biological imaging, data storage or solar cells. Here, we have investigated upconversion processes in a broad range of gadolinium-based nanoparticles of varying composition. We show that by rational design of a core–shell structure with a set of lanthanide ions incorporated into separated layers at precisely defined concentrations, efficient upconversion emission can be realized through gadolinium sublattice-mediated energy migration for a wide range of lanthanide activators without long-lived intermediary energy states. Furthermore, the use of the core–shell structure allows the elimination of deleterious cross-relaxation. This effect enables fine-tuning of upconversion emission through trapping of the migrating energy by the activators. Indeed, the findings described here suggest a general approach to constructing a new class of luminescent materials with tunable upconversion emissions by controlled manipulation of energy transfer within a nanoscopic region.

Abstract:Smart control of photon upconversion is a key strategy for lanthanide-based materials used in biological and photonic applications. However, this has remained a challenge for the upconversion luminescence of lanthanides under excitation in the second near-infrared (NIR II) biowindow instead of at the conventional 980 and 808 nm wavelengths. Here, we report a conceptual design for an energy-migratory ytterbium sublattice in an erbium-sensitized multilayer core–shell nanostructure that is able to achieve photon upconversion from a broad range of lanthanide ions (Yb3+, Tm3+, Ho3+, Gd3+, Eu3+ and Tb3+) under 1,530 nm irradiation. The quasi-single-band upconversion in the first near-infrared (NIR I) biowindow is also realized through fine manipulation of the introduced cross-relaxations. By establishing an interfacial energy-transfer-mediated nanostructure, we also gain a deep insight into the mechanistic features of the energy migration. These results open new opportunities in a variety of frontier applications, such as information security.
