Abstract:Suitable catalysts and reasonable structures for oxygen electrodes can effectively improve the electrochemical performance of lithium-oxygen batteries. In this work, ruthenium oxide modified boron-doped hierarchically porous reduced graphene aerogels (RuO2-B-HRG) are prepared by a sol-gel and subsequent low temperature annealing method and used as oxygen electrodes. The RuO2 nanoparticles (5-10 nm) are uniformly anchored in the three-dimensional B-HRG continuous electric network. The RuO2-B-HRG aerogel possesses a large specific surface area (287.211 m2 g-1) and numerous mesopores and micropores. The pores facilitate electrolyte impregnation and oxygen diffusion, and they provide greatly increased accommodation space for the discharge products. Electrochemical tests show that the RuO2-B-HRG/KB enables the electrode overpotential to decrease, and the rate capability and the cycling stability are enhanced compared with pure HRG. The enhanced performance is ascribed to the bifunctional catalytic activity of RuO2-B-HRG and its unique three-dimensional porous architecture. The method is proved to be an effective strategy to combine porous carbon materials and nanoscale catalysts as electrodes for Li-O2 batteries.

Abstract:Developing an efficient cathode is essential to obtain high rate capability and rechargeable lithium oxygen (Li-O-2) batteries. Herein, ruthenium (Ru)-functionalized hierarchical carbon nanocages (hCNCs) are synthesized and employed as a cathode catalyst for Li-O-2 batteries. The as-prepared cathode exhibits high discharge capacity, low charge potential (8135 mAhg(-1) with 3.85V charge potential at a current density of 0.08 mAcm(-2)), outstanding rate capability (3416 mAhg(-1) at a current density of 0.48 mAcm(-2)) and good stability up to 78 cycles at a limited capacity of 500 mAhg(-1). Such excellent battery performance is ascribed to the synergistic effect of the interconnected hierarchically porous structure of hCNCs, which can facilitate effective electrolyte immersion and efficient Li+/O-2 mass transport, and the high catalytic activity of Ru nanoparticles.

Abstract:Li-O-2 batteries with super-high theoretical energy density are attracting extensive attention. However, the sluggish oxygen reduction/ evolution reaction, the huge volume change from O-2/Li2O2 conversion and the undesired electrolyte decomposition in cathode limit their performance. Herein we show design and synthesis of RuO2-coated ordered mesoporous carbon nanofiber arrays by using a natural crab shell template as a catalyst for Li-O-2 battery, exhibiting several advantage features. First, the ordered mesopores in nanofibers facilitate electrolyte penetration and electron/ion transfer. In addition, the macrosized voids between the nanofibers provide efficient buffer space for O-2/Li2O2 accommodation and improve O-2 diffusion. Furthermore, the uniform RuO2-coating layer alleviates undesired electrolyte decomposition and enhances the surface electronic conductivity. As a result, the battery displays high performance, including high capacity (20600 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 100 mA g(-1)), high rate (9750 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 1000 mA g(-1)) and long-life (300 cycles at a fixed capacity of 1000 mAh g(-1)). Abstract:Rechargeable non-aqueous lithium-oxygen batteries (LOBs) have garnered increasing attention owing to their high theoretical energy density. However, their slow cathodic kinetics hinder efficient battery reactions. Nanoscale catalysts can effectively enhance electrocatalytic activity and atomic utilization efficiency. However, the agglomeration of nanoscale catalysts (such as cluster and single atoms) during continuous discharge/charge cycles leads to decreased electrochemical performance and poor cyclic stability. Herein, the ruthenium (Ru) atomic sites anchored on an O-doped molybdenum disulfide (O-MoS 2 ) catalyst (designated as Ru/O-MoS 2 ) was fabricated using a facile impregnation and calcination method. Strong Ru-O coupling between Ru atoms and the O-MoS 2 substrate optimizes the localized electronic structure, resulting in improved electrochemical performance and enhanced resistance to Ostwald ripening. When employed as a cathode catalyst for LOBs, Ru/O-MoS 2 catalyst exhibits a high reversible specific capacity (18700.5 (±59.8) mAh g −1 ), good rate capability, and enhanced long-term stability (115 cycles, 1200 h). This study encourages facile and efficient strategies for the development of effective and stable electrocatalysts for use in LOBs.

Abstract:The design and fabrication of cathode remain a major challenge for lithium oxygen (Li-O-2) batteries. Here, RuO2/alpha-MnO2 nanotubes as efficient bifunctional cathode catalysts are prepared by two-step hydrothermal reaction to improve the battery performance. Nitrogen adsorption desorption (BET) tests indicate that RuO2/alpha-MnO2 nanotubes have mesoporous structure with specific surface area of 51.2 m(2) g(-1). Electrochemical tests show that the catalytic activity and the conductivity of alpha-MnO2 nanotubes modified with RuO2 nanoparticles are improved. RuO2/alpha-MnO2 nanotubes are used as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for cathode in Li-O-2 batteries, which show reduced overpotential, improved rate and cycling performance. At the current density of 0.05 mA cm(-2), the overpotential of the batteries can go down by 0.38 V, and these batteries can be fully discharged/charged 26 cycles stably at a fixed capacity of 500 mAh g(-1). The combination of RuO2 nanoparticles and alpha-MnO2 nanotubes has excellent catalytic activity for ORR/OER, thus greatly improving the electrochemical performance of Li-O-2 batteries.
Ruthenium Functionalized Graphene Aerogels with Hierarchical and Three-Dimensional Porosity As a Free-Standing Cathode for Rechargeable Lithium-Oxygen Batteries

Abstract:Although possessing extremely high energy density, lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) battery suffered from large charge overpotential, low round-trip efficiency and poor cycling life, which limited the practical application of this smart system. Ru particles functionalized graphene aerogels (Ru-GAs) were designed and directly used as a free-standing cathode for Li-O2 battery. The Ru-GAs showed hierarchical pores, which had the pore volumes of 2.8 and 14.1 cm3 g−1 below and above critical pore diameter of 100 nm. The Ru-GA cathode in Li-O2 battery delivered a high capacity of more than 12 000 mAh g−1 and excellent cycling retention, which was mainly attributed to the three-dimensional porosity, abundant active sites with Ru particles and chemical stability arising from the character of binder-free cathode. Based on the results of in situ gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis, the reaction mechanism during charge process in aprotic electrolyte was proposed by the theory of three oxidation stages. By overcoming common limitations of carbon cathodes for lithium–oxygen batteries, scientists in China have produced a high-capacity battery. Lithium–oxygen batteries are very promising for powering electric vehicles and domestic devices. Carbon would be an excellent cathode material for such batteries except that it both self-decomposes and catalyses decomposition of the electrolyte. A team led by Haoshen Zhou of Nanjing University has used graphene aerogels functionalized with ruthenium nanoparticles as a freestanding cathode for a lithium–oxygen battery. The battery displayed a high specific capacity and a superior cycling retention, which the researchers attribute to the three-dimensional hierarchical pores in the cathode acting as channels for oxygen and electrolyte diffusion. The high abundance of active sites on the ruthenium nanoparticles and good chemical stability also contributed to the favourable battery properties. The graphene aerogel (GA) cathode has unique properties with a hierarchically porous structure that facilitates electrolyte permeation and oxygen diffusion, three-dimensional network structures that can enable easy electron transfer through GA, high specific surface area that offers abundant active sites for electrochemical reaction and an ultra-large pore volume that can accommodate plenty of discharge products. Ru nanoparticles supported on graphene sheets also has superior catalytic activity toward oxygen evolution reaction and can efficiently catalyze the decomposition of the discharge product Li2O2.
Atomically Dispersed Ruthenium Catalysts with Open Hollow Structure for Lithium-Oxygen Batteries

Abstract:Lithium-oxygen battery with ultra-high theoretical energy density is considered a highly competitive next-generation energy storage device, but its practical application is severely hindered by issues such as difficult decomposition of discharge products at present. Here, we have developed N-doped carbon anchored atomically dispersed Ru sites cathode catalyst with open hollow structure (h-RuNC) for Lithium-oxygen battery. On one hand, the abundance of atomically dispersed Ru sites can effectively catalyze the formation and decomposition of discharge products, thereby greatly enhancing the redox kinetics. On the other hand, the open hollow structure not only enhances the mass activity of atomically dispersed Ru sites but also improves the diffusion efficiency of catalytic molecules. Therefore, the excellent activity from atomically dispersed Ru sites and the enhanced diffusion from open hollow structure respectively improve the redox kinetics and cycling stability, ultimately achieving a high-performance lithium-oxygen battery.

Abstract:AbstractLi‐CO2 batteries are regarded as next‐generation high‐energy‐density electrochemical devices. However, the greatest challenge arises from the formation of the discharge product, Li2CO3, which would accumulate and deactivate heterogenous catalysts to cause huge polarization. Herein, Ru(bpy)3Cl2 was employed as a solution‐phase catalyst for Li‐CO2 batteries and proved to be the most effective one screened so far. Spectroscopy and electrochemical analyses elucidate that the RuII center could interact with both CO2 and amorphous Li2C2O4 intermediate, thus promoting electroreduction process and delaying carbonate transformation. As a result, the charge potential is reduced to 3.86 V and over 60 discharge/charge cycles are achieved with a fixed capacity of 1000 mAh g−1 at a current density of 300 mA g−1. Our work provides a new avenue to improve the electrochemical performance of Li‐CO2 batteries with efficient mobile catalysts.

Abstract:Three-dimensional ordered mesoporous/macroporous carbon sphere arrays (MMCSAs) are synthesized and then used as a catalyst for Li-O-2 batteries. Abstract:A facile synthesis of hydrangea-like hierarchical microstructure formed from mesoporous RuO2 nanoplates has been firstly developed, based on a self-assemble method and subsequent calcination. This RuO2 material displays excellent catalysis towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in Li–O2 batteries, because of increased catalytic sites, improved Li+ ions and electrons transport, and existence of electrolyte-filled intersheet zones between RuO2 sheets that will supply electrolyte to compensate for the evaporation of electrolyte. Specifically, the cell with the mesoporous RuO2 as carbon-free catalyst can deliver about 1000 and 700mAhg–1 for the first and 100th cycle, respectively. Also, the cell used the RuO2 material as catalyst shows good rate capability with a capacity of about 500mAhg–1 even at the current density of 1000mAg–1. The good electrochemical performance suggests that the unique hierarchical mesoporous RuO2 could be a promising catalyst for future application in Li–O2 batteries.
Hierarchical Ordered Macroporous/Ultrathin Mesoporous Carbon Architecture: A Promising Cathode Scaffold with Excellent Rate Performance for Rechargeable Li-O-2 Batteries

Abstract:In spite of the ultrahigh theoretical energy density, non-aqueous Li-O-2 batteries are still constrained by their inefficient cathodes. Here, we report the synthesis of a distinctive hierarchical carbon architecture (HOM-AMUW) for Li-O2 batteries, which consists of highly ordered macropores (250 nm) with abundant mesopores on their ultrathin walls (4-5 nm). This carbon architecture exhibits unprecedented discharge capacity of 37523 mAh g(-1) and 12686 mAh g(-1) at the current density of 500 mA g(-1) and even 2000 mA g(-1), respectively. After further functionalization by low crystalline Ru nanoclusters, the resulted Ru-HOM-AMUWarchitecture presents a much low charge polarization and outstanding cycling stability. The significant performance enhancement is mainly attributed to the unique hierarchical porous structure, wherein the ordered macropores and ultrathin mesoporous walls remarkably enhance the access capability of O-2 or Li+ to the numerous active sites, and the large pore volume easily accommodates the discharge products. Moreover, the hierarchical porous structure modulates the morphology of discharge products to three-dimensional porous structure with high charge transport, which also contributes to the striking rate capability. This HOM-AMUW architecture is a promising scaffold to design the gas electrodes with ultrahigh rate performance not only for Li-O-2 batteries but also for other metal-air batteries. Abstract:Network structured carbonized bacterial cellulose-supported Ru nanoparticles (CBC/Ru), which provide sufficient space for Li2O2 deposition without a significant volume effect and improve the transport of oxygen and electrons, were used as the binder-free oxygen electrode in a Li-O2 battery. Abstract:Rechargeable Li-CO2 batteries are an innovative energy storage technology with broad application prospects owing to their superb energy density and ability to capture the greenhouse gas CO2. However, they are still suffering from severe challenges in the formation and decomposition of electrochemically sluggish Li2CO3 discharge products, resulting in poor battery performance. Development of an efficient cathodic electrocatalyst has the potential to address these issues by catalytically boosting the conversion of Li2CO3. Herein, we have designed a Ru-Cu nanoalloy decorated porous carbon (Ru-Cu@NPC) material derived from an anion-exchanged cationic MOF, and it can serve as an efficient cathode electrocatalyst for Li-CO2 batteries. Benefitting from the uniform distribution of ultrafine Ru-Cu nanoalloys with high catalytic performance, Ru-Cu@NPC displays excellent CO2 reduction and evolution activities. Impressively, the Li-CO2 battery with the Ru-Cu@NPC catalyst exhibits a remarkably low potential gap of 0.93 V at 100 mA g-1 and a stable discharge/charge cycling performance of more than 400 cycles at a high current density of 400 mA g-1 within a limiting capacity of 1000 mA h g-1. The study provides an opportunity for the research of cationic MOF derived bimetallic catalysts in the Li-CO2 battery field.

Abstract:Metal single-atom catalysts have attracted widespread attention in the field of lithium-oxygen batteries due to their unique active sites, high catalytic selectivity, and near total atomic utilization efficiency. Isolated metal atoms not only serve as the active sites themselves, but also function as modulators, reversely regulating the surface electronic structure of the support to enhance its inherent electrocatalytic activities. Despite the potential of isolated metal atom-driven active sites, understanding the structure-activity relationship remains a challenge. In this study, we present a ruthenium single-atom doping-driven cost-effective and durable tricobalt tetroxide electrocatalyst with excellent oxygen electrode electrocatalytic activity. The lithium-oxygen battery with this catalyst as the oxygen electrode demonstrates high performance, achieving a capacity of up to 25 000 mA h g-1 and maintaining good stability over 400 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g-1. This improvement is attributed to the exquisite control of the morphology and structure of the discharge product, lithium peroxide. The aresults of physical characterization and theoretical calculations reveal that isolated ruthenium atoms bond with the tetrahedral cobalt site, resulting in spin polarization enhancement and rearrangement of d orbital energy levels in cobalt. This rearrangement reduces the dz2 orbital occupancy and promotes their transfer to the octahedral cobalt site, thereby enhancing its adsorption capacity for the oxygen-containing intermediates, and ultimately increasing the electrocatalytic activity of the oxygen evolution reaction. This work presents an innovative strategy to regulate the catalytic activity of metal oxides by introducing another metal single atom.

Abstract:The nonaqueous lithium-oxygen (Li-O-2) battery possesses extremely high theoretical energy density which is considered as one of the most fascinating next-generation energy storage systems. However, the sluggish oxygen redox reaction kinetics in the cathode of Li-O-2 battery severely limits its practical application. The incorporation of cathode electrocatalyst with high activity is an effective strategy to address this issue. Herein we report a novel electrocatalyst of ultrafine Ru/RuOx nanoparticles (NPs) decorated on the surface of carbon nanotubes (Ru/RuOx@CNTs) synthesized by a facile modified ethylene glycol reduction method. The as-prepared Ru/RuOx@CNTs electrocatalyst as cathode for Li-O-2 battery delivers high initial discharge specific capacity up to 3795 mAh g(-1), low overpotential and preferable cycle stability of 113 cycles with a limited specific capacity of 500 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 mA cm(-2) compared with CNTs cathode, which is originated from the well-dispersed Ru/RuOx nanoparticles on CNTs, leading to efficient electrocatalytic activities for oxygen reduction and evolution reactions.
Highly Efficient Carbon-Array-Supported MnO2/RuO2 Cathodes for Lithium-Oxygen Batteries with Spatial and Induction Effects

Abstract:Through a facile, stepwise approach that includes electropolymerization, calcination, a hydrothermal method and low-temperature adsorption, a carbon array was coated with RuO2/MnO2 to form a highly efficient composite catalyst (RuO2/MnO2@carbon array) for Li-O-2 batteries. The unique, hierarchical, three-dimensional array-type structure facilitates electrode wetting and oxygen transport as well as providing a large volume for Li2O2 loading. The growth of MnO2 nanosheets on the carbon array surface alters the surface roughness and provides attachment sites for the subsequent loading of catalyst nanoparticles. In addition, the introduction of RuO2 induces the formation of Mn3+ on the surface of MnO2, which not only improves the electrode conductivity but also the catalytic activity for ORR/OER. As a result, conformal growth of thin layers of Li2O2 on the surface of the RuO2/MnO2@carbon array and reversible decomposition of Li2O2 during cycling were achieved. In comparison with cathodes without a carbon array or catalyst, the Li-O-2 cell with a RuO2/MnO2@carbon array cathode exhibits an markedly improved performance with high discharge capacity (10 000 mAh g(-1) at 100 mA g(-1)) and long cycling life (252 cycles at 200 mA g(-1) with a limited capacity of 500 mAh g(-1)).
Single‐Atom Immobilization Boosting Oxygen Redox Kinetics of High‐Entropy Perovskite Oxide Toward High‐Performance Lithium‐Oxygen Batteries

Abstract:A novel bi‐functional electrocatalyst is created by immobilizing single‐atom ruthenium (Ru) on high entropy oxide La(Mn0.2Co0.2Fe0.2Ni0.2Cr0.2)O3 (Ru@HEPO) for Li‐O2 batteries. The stronger interfacial electronic interaction between Ru and HEPO induces charge redistribution and reduces the reaction energy barrier of the oxygen electrode. Thus, significantly improving the difunctional electrocatalyst activity and cyclic stability of Li‐O2 battery. Understanding and modulating the unique electronic interaction between single‐metal atoms and high entropy compounds are of great significance to enable their high‐efficiency oxygen electrocatalysis for aprotic lithium‐oxygen (Li‐O2) batteries. Herein, a novel bi‐functional electrocatalyst is for the first time created by immobilizing single‐atom ruthenium (Ru) on lanthanum‐based high entropy perovskite oxide La(Mn0.2Co0.2Fe0.2Ni0.2Cr0.2)O3 (Ru@HEPO), which demonstrates high activity and stability in Li‐O2 batteries. The heteronuclear coordination between single‐atom Ru and HEPO facilitates fast electron transfer from Ru to HEPO by establishing Ru‐O‐M (M stands for Mn, Co, Fe, Ni) bridges, which well redistributes electrons within the Ru@HEPO hence significantly improving its interfacial charge transfer kinetics and electrocatalytic activity. Additionally, the strong electron coupling between Ru and Mn atoms enhances the hybridization between Mn 3d and O 2p orbitals, which promotes the inherent affinity of Ru@HEPO toward the LiO2 intermediate, thereby reducing the reaction energy barrier of the oxygen electrode. As a result, the Ru@HEPO‐based Li‐O2 batteries deliver remarkable electrochemical performances, such as high energy efficiency (87.3% at 100 mA g−1), excellent rate capability (low overpotential of 0.52 V at 100 mA g−1) and durable cyclability (345 cycles at 300 mA g−1). This work opens up a promising avenue for the development of high entropy‐based electrocatalysts for Li‐O2 batteries by precisely tailoring the electronic distributions at an atomic scale.

Abstract:Li-O2 batteries with ultrahigh theoretical energy density have triggered worldwide research interests and hold the prospect for powering electric vehicles. However, the poor cycling stability and low energy efficiency of Li-O2 batteries still remain and hamper their practical application. Configuring desirable porous cathodes with uniformly dispersed and highly active catalysts is a noteworthy and feasible approach to overcoming these critical obstacles. Herein, we report on a novel strategy for the fabrication of Mn3O4 nanowires and carbon nanotubes composite film (Mn3O4/CNTs film) with ultrafine RuO2 nanoparticles (Mn3O4/CNTs-RuO2 film), in which the Mn3O4/CNTs film was employed as a conductive and porous matrix and extremely low amount of RuO2 (just 2.84 wt%) are uniformly dispersed onto this matrix by using atomic layer deposition method, and reveal its electrochemical behaviors as a free-standing air electrode for Li-O2 batteries. The Mn3O4/CNTs-RuO2 film delivers a high specific capacity, improved round-trip energy efficiency and ultra-long cycle life (251 cycles). The superior electrochemical performance can be attributed to the enhanced catalytic activity of the grafted RuO2 with modulated electronic structure as the result of the interaction with substrate, which is evidenced by the corresponding X-ray absorption spectroscopy results and the unique nanosheet-shaped discharge product which can be smoothly decomposed.
Monodispersed Ruthenium Nanoparticles on Nitrogen-Doped Reduced Graphene Oxide for an Efficient Lithium–Oxygen Battery

Abstract:Lithium–oxygen batteries with ultrahigh energy densities have drawn considerable attention as next-generation energy storage devices. However, their practical applications are challenged by sluggish reaction kinetics aimed at the formation/decomposition of discharge products on battery cathodes. Developing effective catalysts and understanding the fundamental catalytic mechanism are vital to improve the electrochemical performance of lithium–oxygen batteries. Here, uniformly dispersed ruthenium nanoparticles anchored on nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide are prepared by using an in situ pyrolysis procedure as a bifunctional catalyst for lithium–oxygen batteries. The abundance of ruthenium active sites and strong ruthenium–support interaction enable a feasible discharge product formation/decomposition route by modulating the surface adsorption of lithium superoxide intermediates and the nucleation and growth of lithium peroxide species. Benefiting from these merits, the electrode provides a drastically increased discharge capacity (17,074 mA h g–1), a decreased charge overpotential (0.51 V), and a long-term cyclability (100 cycles at 100 mA g–1).
