Abstract:With the dwindling availability of fossil fuel resources and the dramatic increase in demand, 5-methoxymethylfurfural (MMF) obtained from renewable biomass resources has great potential as a fossil fuel alternative. In this work, a high yield (80.5%) of MMF was obtained from fructose catalyzed by Amberlyst-15 with the assistance of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in methanol at 100 degrees C for 10 h. Based on a detailed investigation of the reaction mechanism through the effects of DMSO, Amberlyst-15, reaction time, and reaction temperature on MMF yield and the existence of intermediates proved by FTIR, a two-step pathway was proposed: (1) DMSO and H ion on Amberlyst-15 act as a joint-catalyst [DMSOH](+), facilitating the dehydration of fructose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and (2) [DMSOH](+) assists the etherification of HMF with methanol into MMF, which is the rate-determining step. This finding expands the concept of biomass conversion into biomass fuels and plays a vital role in catalyst screen and design, reaction medium selection, and industrial applications.

Abstract:5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) can be widely converted into value-added chemicals and fuels production. Herein, we reported a sustainable and efficient approach for synthesizing HMF directly from cellulose. Facile formylation of cellulose with green and recyclable formic acid was developed for cellulose formate (CF) production. CF with special net-like structure and high degree of formyl substitution was prepared. The resultant CF exhibited excellent catalytic conversion and selectivity for HMF production comparable to monomeric glucose as reactant in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-H2O media. In our work, we presented molecular dynamics simulations to elaborate the preferential coordination of DMSO around formyl group, which promoted the solvation of formylated substrate in DMSO-H2O mixture, and the HMF yielded could be protected by DMSO without further degradation to levulinic acid or humins.

Abstract:5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is an important bio-based platform chemical, and its aerobic selective oxidation to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) still remains a challenge. This work dealt with active manganese dioxide (AMD) and efficiently catalyzed HMF oxidation to DFF with a yield of ~73% at 393 K and 60 bar O2 in N,N-Dimethylformamide (DMF). Through analysis of liquid products and the catalyst characterization using X-ray diffraction (XRD), a scanning electron microscope (SEM), a transmission electron microscope (TEM), and an elemental analyzer, it can be seen that this AMD catalyst is a low-cost, efficient, and environmentally benign heterogeneous catalyst for the aerobic selective oxidation of HMF to DFF in a one-pot technique. These research results may provide guidance for the development of more efficient catalysts for the future industrial production of high-value added DFF.

Abstract:It is challenging to effectively convert 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF), a flexible biobased buildingblock, over non-noble metal catalysts. In this contribution, Mn-Fe oxides were prepared and served as highly active catalysts for the selective oxidation of HMF to DFF. Among Mn-Fe oxides with varied Mn-Fe molar ratios, Mn6Fe1Ox showed the best catalytic activity and offered HMF conversion up to 97% with a DFF selectivity of 98% (110 degrees C, 5 h, and 1.5 MPa O-2). It is revealed that the introduction of alpha-Fe2O3 resulted in significant enhancement in the amount of catalytic active sites (Mn4+-O2- pairs) and their activity in Mn6Fe1Ox for the dehydrogenation of HMF to DFF. Mn6Fe1Ox also was a robust catalyst that could be successively used at least six times without substantial loss in its catalytic activity. Furthermore, a facile two-step process for the conversion of fructose to DFF with a yield up to 80% was developed by the integration of dehydration and oxidation over Amberlyst-15 and Mn6Fe1Ox, respectively.

Abstract:In this study, aerobic oxidation of S-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) was studied over a magnetic catalyst [Fe3O4@SiO2-NH2-Ru(III)]. Various reaction parameters were optimized for the oxidation of HMF into DFF. A high DFF of 86.4% and HMF conversion of 99.3% were obtained after 4 h at 120 degrees C. More importantly, the catalyst also showed high catalytic activity in air, and high HMF conversion of 99.7% and DFF yield of 86.8% were obtained after 16 h. The high catalytic performance of Fe3O4@SiO2-NH2-Ru(III) in air makes this method much more convenient and economical. Moreover, the procedure of the catalyst recycle was simple as the Fe3O4@SiO2-NH2-Ru(III) catalyst could be readily recovered from the reaction mixture by a permanent magnet. The catalyst could be reused several times without significant loss of its catalytic activity.

Abstract:5-Formyl-2-furancarboxylic acid (FFCA) is an important bio-blocks material, which has promising applications in synthesis, chemical intermediates, drugs, etc. However, the selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into FFCA seems very difficult, which has been rarely studied. In this study, we have developed a new method for the selective oxidation of HMF to FFCA over a Fe-Anderson type catalyst of Na3H6FeMo6O24 center dot 5H(2)O (abbreviated as FeMo6). The FeMo6 catalyst was prepared by the recrystallization method and systematically characterized by XRD, UV-vis, FT-IR, TG, ICP-AES, and XPS technologies. Mo5+ species and a large number of surface oxygen species were found to be close-knit associated with catalytic performances. The experiment found that the maximum FFCA yield can be obtained when n-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP) was used as the reaction solvent and the HMF and K2CO3 molar ratio was 0.5. Under the optimal conditions (HMF/ K2CO3/Catalyst = 1/0.5/0.08, T = 100 degrees C, 8 h), the oxidation of HMF over the FeMo6 catalyst could produce FFCA with a yield of 75% in the solvent of NMP. Most importantly, this catalyst was employed in this reaction under aerobic environment at atmospheric pressure, demonstrating a high catalytic activity. The molecular design and synthesis of a size-enlarged C-3-symmetric tris-TEMPO catalyst are also performed to facilitate a sustainable reaction work-up through nanofiltration. The obtained performance is then compared with those obtained by heterogeneous TEMPO alternatives recovered by using an external magnetic field and microfiltration. Results show that this new method of electrocatalytic oxidation of HMF to DFF can be achieved with excellent selectivity, good yield, and excellent catalyst recovery.

Abstract:An iron(III)-catalyzed selective oxidation of 5-HMF to 2,5-DFF in air at room temperature was developed. This approach gives 2,5-DFF with good selectivity and yields. Additionally, a two-step process was developed for the oxidation of 2,5-DFF to 2,5-FDCA at remarkably high substrate concentrations. This work demonstrates unequivocally the great potential of iron as a cheap and earth-abundant catalyst for the development of new protocols for the conversion of biomass to value-added chemicals. Abstract:The development of safe, economical and highly efficient oxidation systems for the production of chemicals from biomass remains a significant and challenging target. Here, we firstly find a unique air-assisted reaction mechanism for the non-pressurized oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) using dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) as O-donor over CoZrNC-MCM, which affords an exceptional productivity among all non-noble catalysts. The combination of control experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveals that the air-assisted DMSO-oxidation pathway is activated by the co-adsorption of DMSO and O2 on Co-(pyrrolic N-C) pairs of CoNC-MCM. ZrNC species on CoZrNC-MCM will be thermally disintegrated to release ZrO2+ and provide the corresponding cation vacancies that might be able to capture Co atoms to form additional Co-(pyrrolic N-C) active pairs, resulting in the increase of catalytiv activity. The released ZrO2+ is well dispersed over Al-MCM-41 in the form of zirconia, which contributes to the dehydration of fructose to HMF. In this way an one-step approach to synthesizing DFF from fructose is achieved by the cooperation of zirconia and Co-(pyrrolic N-C) pairs over CoZrNC-MCM.

Abstract:The selective oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) has attracted much attention in recent years. Cesium-doped manganese dioxide (Cs/MnOx) was prepared by a soft template method, and was found to be active for the selective oxidation of HMF to DFF with molecular oxygen. Various reaction conditions have been investigated, and DFF was attained with a high yield of 94.7% at a HMF conversion of 98.4% at 100 degrees C and 10 bar O-2 in N,N-dimethylformamide. Cs/MnOx demonstrated much higher catalytic activity than un-doped MnOx, suggesting that the introduction of Cs into MnOx plays a crucial role in the oxidation of HMF to DFF. Kinetic studies demonstrated that the oxidation of HMF to DFF depends on both the HMF and oxygen concentration, with the reaction order being 0.44 and 0.53, respectively. Compared with other heterogeneous non-noble metal catalysts, Cs/MnOx demonstrated a much lower activation energy for the oxidation of HMF to DFF. The catalyst can be reused without much loss of catalytic activity, suggesting that the catalyst is highly stable. Furthermore, the direct production of HMF from fructose was also successfully realized by a one-pot reaction strategy via two consecutive steps.
Self-Developed Fabrication of Manganese Oxides Microtubes with Efficient Catalytic Performance for the Selective Oxidation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural

Abstract:The development of green catalytic processes from biomass-derived feedstock such as 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to valuable chemicals is a hot topic in which the facile synthesis of heterogeneous catalyst and molecular oxygen as the oxidant are desired. In this work, manganese oxide (MnOx) microtubes were prepared by a facile solvothermal method via in situ self-development, where chemical conversion coupled with physical Ostwald ripening occurred. The results showed that MnOx microtubes could be used as an efficient catalyst for the selective aerobic oxidation of HMF to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF). Various reaction parameters have been investigated and DFF was obtained with a high selectivity of 100% under the reaction conditions of 90 degrees C, 8.0 bar O-2, and N,N-dimethylformamide as solvent. Moreover, kinetic parameters revealed that the reaction fitted the first order equation corresponding to HMF. In particular, it was demonstrated that the activation energy was low with an 11.80 kcal/mol in comparison with reported non-noble catalysts, thus the reaction could be performed under a relatively low reaction temperature. Furthermore, the catalyst could be easily recoverable and reusable after several times without any significant loss, suggesting its excellent reusability and stability.

Abstract:Conversion of biomass into high value products via environmentally benign processes remains a challenging task for chemists. Photocatalytic partial oxidation of the biochemical 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) has attracted much attention as DFF is known to be a pivotal precursor in the biochemical industry. Previously, this reaction has been catalyzed with transition metal based catalytic systems in organic solvents. Herein, we report the use of a covalent triazine framework (CTF) as a highly stable and porous organic photoactive polymer for the photocatalytic partial oxidation of HMF to DFF in water, using molecular oxygen as a green oxidant. The photocatalyst showed high efficiency in affording DFF as the target product with good reusability.

Abstract:A new method for the selective aerobic oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) into 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) has been developed employing a magnetically separable [gamma-Fe2O3@ HAP-Pd(0)] catalyst. The catalyst was prepared by the exchange of Pd2+ with Ca2+ in gamma-Fe2O3@ HAP, followed by reduction of the Pd2+ to Pd(0) nanoparticles, and well characterized by TEM, XRD and XPS. The catalyst showed high activity in the oxidation of HMF to FDCA in water, with 97% HMF conversion and a 92.9% yield of FDCA under optimal reaction conditions. The method developed has demonstrated some advantages, including its sole requirement of a stoichiometric base, and high catalytic performance under atmospheric oxygen, even in air. More importantly, the gamma-Fe2O3@ HAP-Pd(0) catalyst was readily separated from the reaction solution using an external magnetic field and was successfully reused during five consecutive reaction runs while retaining its catalytic effectiveness. This study provides a green and sustainable method for the production of valuable chemicals from renewable resources.

Abstract:BACKGROUND 2,5-Diformylfuran (DFF) is a versatile bio-derived platform chemical. Multiple catalytic systems including homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts have been studied for the oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) to DFF, but a more efficient and economical approach to produce DFF via HMF remains to be developed. RESULTS This study provides a practical approach to oxidizing HMF to DFF using Fe(NO3)(3)/Cu(NO3)(2) as catalysts and air as oxidant with the assistance of K2S2O8. The typical oxidation of HMF to DFF was conducted under conditions of 4 wt% catalyst, 80 degrees C and 3 h, achieving an excellent DFF yield of over 99%. CONCLUSION In this oxidation reaction, Fe(NO3)(3) played a crucial catalytic role by the redox cycle of Fe(III) and Fe(II), while Cu(NO3)(2) functioned as a co-catalyst to promote the redox cycle of Fe(II) and Fe(III) by the redox cycle of Cu(II) and Cu(I) with the assistance of oxygen. Meanwhile, NO2 released from the decomposition of Fe(NO3)(3) during the redox cycle of Fe(II) and Fe(III) also participated in the oxidation of Fe(II) to Fe(III) by the redox cycle of NO2 and NO with the assistance of oxygen. Noteworthily, K2S2O8 provided an essential acidity to the oxidation of HMF to DFF through its decomposition product SO3. Abstract:The efficient synthesis of 2, 5-diformylfuran (DFF) over non-noble metal catalysts has been a significant challenge in biomass conversion strategies. Herein, a bimetallic V-Mo oxide supported by nitrogen-doped carbon (VMo@CN) was fabricated for the efficient oxygenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) towards DFF. Remarkably, under the optimal conditions, a full conversion of HMF was achieved with an impressive DFF yield of 97.1 %. This oxidation reaction was determined to be a first-order reaction with a relatively lower apparent activation energy of 46.76 kJ/mol and proceeded by the synergistic redoxes of V 5 + /V 3 + and Mo 6 + /Mo 4 + with the assistance of the highly mobile lattice oxygen. The synergism of the V-species, Mo-species and @CN support contributed to the high-efficiency oxidation of HMF to generate DFF. The synergistic action of the V-species and O-species was responsible for the competitive adsorption advantage of the C -OH in HMF with a vertical configuration, ensuring the highly selective and efficiency in oxidizing HMF toward DFF.
Unraveling the Electrooxidation Mechanism of 5-(Hydroxymethyl)furfural at a Molecular Level Via Nickel-Based Two-Dimensional Metal-Organic Frameworks Catalysts

Abstract:Electrochemical conversion of biomass can mitigate environmental issues while providing a substitute for fossil products, yet it is challenging to construct efficient catalysts due to the limited understanding of the reaction mechanism. Here, two well-defined Ni-O-4 and Ni-(NH2)(4) centers supported on two-dimensional conductive metal organic frameworks (2D MOFs, Ni-HHTP and Ni-HITP) catalysts were reported for the exploration of 5-(hydroxymethyl) furfural (HMF) electrochemical oxidation (e-HMFOR). The single Ni-O-4 site in Ni-HHTP exhibited superior catalytic activities with high turnover frequencies (TOF, 0.219 s(-1)) and stability (5 cycles, similar to 20 h) in the alkaline electrolyte. By virtue of the 2D MOFs model electrocatalysts combined with the ex situ ESR characteristics and oxidation products online tracking in different reaction systems, we identified that the coordination atoms with Ni played a key role on the electrocatalytic performance. The higher its electronegativity, the stronger dehydrogenation capacity of hydroxymethyl, aldehyde, and H2O, which could efficiently promote the conversion of HMF. Moreover, the clear reaction pathway of e-HMFOR, especially the specific interaction process between HMF and the active sites, was also disclosed. This study offers well-defined and stable 2D MOFs electrocatalysts for systematically studying the distinct e-HMFOR mechanism and provides a theoretical guidance for the design of efficient aldehyde and hydroxymethyl oxidation electrocatalysts.
Selective Electrosynthesis of 2,5-Diformylfuran in a Continuous-Flow System

Abstract:The gram-scale selective oxidation of biomass-based chemicals, in particular 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), into value-added 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) has a high application potential but suffers from high cost, low selectivity, and harsh reaction conditions. Besides, the electrooxidation strategy requires the usage of expensive electrodes and struggles with low selectivity and efficiency, which restricts its further scaled-up application. In this regard, a continuous-flow system was developed through redox mediator I-/I-2 for the efficient synthesis of DFF, which could accelerate the mass transfer of I- (I-2) to aqueous (organic) phase and avoid over-oxidation to achieve high selectivity. After the solvent system, iodine concentration, and reaction time were optimized, highly efficient DFF synthesis (selectivity >99 %) could be achieved in the electrochemical flow system using inexpensive graphite felt (GF) as electrode. Moreover, selective HMF oxidation was paired with the hydrogen evolution reaction with increased efficiency after using in-situ-loaded GF-CoS2/CoS and GF-Pt electrodes. As a result, the required energy to achieve the gram-scale synthesis of DFF was significantly reduced, demonstrating outstanding potential for large-scale production of the target product.
