Originally published30 Sep 2019https://doi.org/10.1161/CIRCULATIONAHA.119.043425Circulation. 2019;140:1219–1220This year's highly successful 13th Oriental Congress of Cardiology (OCC) was held May 31 to June 2, 2019, at the World Expo Center in Shanghai. This year's OCC addressed the latest cutting-edge research progress and hot issues in cardiovascular biology emerging in China and worldwide. A total of 167 foreign and 1454 domestic experts attended, presenting 1004 lectures in 20 fora, attracting more than 14 000 cardiovascular specialists from around the world.During the opening ceremony, Professor Junbo Ge, OCC President, updated the audience regarding the 2019 China Cardiovascular Health Index, first coined and announced at the 2017 OCC. This index was derived from big data collected at a national level and corroborated by more than 40 top experts in the fields of epidemiology, public health, clinical medicine, and policy research in China. The evaluation system covers 52 indices within 5 dimensions. The new, revised 2019 index is enhanced by an improved data source and an updated analysis algorithm, such that the revised index emphasizes public health significance and with enhanced scientific rigor. The 2019 index analyzes cardiovascular risk burden in China, which is helpful to the entire professional field and to the government, in promoting prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases from "point" to "surface."Between 2017 and 2019, the national average index, a metric of comprehensive evaluation index to depict the panorama of cardiovascular disease prevention and treatment in all provinces in the mainland of China, rose from 48.06 to 50.27. The top 5 provinces were Zhejiang (78.4), Shanghai (78.12), Beijing (76.29), Jiangsu (67.73), and Fujian (64.75) (Figure). Coincident with this, the overall probability of premature cardiovascular death in China decreased from 8.74% to 8.24%, and the probability of premature cardiovascular death associated with ischemic heart disease and stroke also decreased. Dialogues among scientists and physicians revealed how artificial intelligence can promote the transformation of biomedical advances into clinical practice and healthcare management for the population worldwide.Keynote lectures were delivered by Professor John McMurray from the University of Glasgow (Scotland) and Professor Joseph Hill from University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (United States) covering the latest developments in heart failure treatment and a global perspective of cardiovascular science and medicine.The 2019 OCC included 20 fora focusing on diverse topics in cardiovascular medicine, with 2 new fora launched this year. As control of cardiometabolic syndrome is increasingly important in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, this year's OCC proposed a rigorous standard for research in metabolic cardiovascular diseases. In addition, a new forum focusing cardio-oncology was established.During the live transmissions of interventional cardiology procedures, experts from China, Japan, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States performed complex percutaneous coronary intervention cases of chronic total coronary occlusions. Junbo Ge (Shanghai) and Hans Figulla (Germany) successfully performed a novel percutaneous heterotopic caval valve implantation in an 85-year-old female patient with severe tricuspid insufficiency, renal failure, and New York Heart Association class III heart failure.In summary, the 13th OCC was a huge success, providing a platform for physicians and scientists from around the globe to share novel insights regarding disease mechanism, diagnosis, and therapeutics. Whereas OCC is the name of the congress itself, this year's theme of "Open, Creative, Cooperative" was well received.
