Abstract:The snub-nosed monkey genus Rhinopithecus (Colobinae) comprises five species (Rhinopithecus roxellana, Rhinopithecus brelichi, Rhinopithecus bieti, Rhinopithecus strykeri, and Rhinopithecus avunculus). They are range-restricted species occurring only in small areas in China, Vietnam, and Myanmar. All extant species are listed as endangered or critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, all with decreasing populations. With the development of molecular genetics and the improvement and cost reduction in whole-genome sequencing, knowledge about evolutionary processes has improved largely in recent years. Here, we review recent major advances in snub-nosed monkey genetics and genomics and their impact on our understanding of the phylogeny, phylogeography, population genetic structure, landscape genetics, demographic history, and molecular mechanisms of adaptation to folivory and high altitudes in this primate genus. We further discuss future directions in this research field, in particular how genomic information can contribute to the conservation of snub-nosed monkeys.

Changes in Distribution of the Snub-Nosed Monkey in China

Abstract:Snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus), or golden monkeys, are members of the subfamily Colobinae, family Cercopithecinae. They are very beautiful creatures, but are now distributed in very limited areas. The Sichuan species (Rhinopithecus roxellana), the Yunnan species (R. bieti), and the Guizhou species (R. brelichi) are endemic to China (Figure 1). Together with the Vietnamese species (R. avunculus), they were originally regarded as one genus (Napier and Napier, 1967). More recently they have been split, the Chinese forms being classified as one subgenus (R. [Rhinopithecus]) and the Vietnamese as another subgenus (R. [Prebytiscus]) (Jablonski and Peng, 1993; Jablonski, 1998a). Though limited to isolated regions, they form a graded array of species from R. avunculus in subtropical evergreen and deciduous broad-leaf forests at less than 1,000 m altitude to R. bieti in temperate, coniferous forests as high as 3,000 to 4,500 m where annual average temperatures hover near freezing (Pan and Yong, 1989; Boonratana and Le, 1998).

Abstract:The Snub-nosed golden Monkey,which lies in China and Vietnam,is a critically endangered species under nationa first degree protection.By the study and survey its number is rare in Vietnam and in China its number adds to 25 thousands.It mainly lies in south of Sichuan,south of Gansu,Shennongjia of Hubei,Qinling of Shaanxi,Jiangxi Province,North-West of Yunnan,south-east of Xizang and Guizhou Province.And through recently puplished articles,it is suggested that the Snub-nosed golden monkey exists in 42 National Reserves and by analysing the status and the reasons of endangerment,some scientific measures,which includes foundation of some national reserves,ecologically migration,control of indigene number and settlement of survival problem etc,should be adopted.
Two Endemic Primates’ Species in China: Hainan Gibbon and Guizhou Snub-Nosed Monkey

Abstract:Hainan gibbon (Nomascus hainanus) is the most threatened species of gibbon, the endemic primates of China. Currently, there were only 4 groups no more than 30 individuals left, which is only distributed in a 16 km2 area (H: 800–1280 m) of Bawangling National Nature Reserve of Hainan island in China. The social structure of the Hainan gibbon is polygynous, with one adult male pairing with two adult females. Hainan gibbon research has always been one of the hot spots of primate research, mainly concentrated in ecology, behavior, and genetic research. Here, we mainly reported the classification, historical population changes, community structure, dietary, reproductive and song behavior of Hainan gibbon. We also reported the other unique primate of China: Guizhou snub-nosed monkey.
New distribution records for the endangered black-and-white snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus bieti) in Yunnan, China

Abstract:Black-and-white snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus bieti) is an IUCN-Endangered primate endemic to China. There are currently 15 groups separated into five units based on genetic and geographic character analysis. Among these, the southern groups being on the species' most marginal distribution is the most susceptible to extinct in the near future due to most forest fragmentation and human activities. To determine the population dynamics and conversation needs in the southern unit, we conducted interviews and investigation-based interviews in Yunlong and Lanping Counties from December 2013 to February 2018. A new group contains approximately > 10 members, Tianchi group, was found in Tianchi National Nature Reserve and a known group with approximately > 20 R. bieti individuals, Heishan group, which had historically disappeared, was rediscovered in Yunling National Nature Reserve in the southern unit. As a consequence of this survey, the number of groups in the southern unit has increased from three to five, and the total groups has increased from 15 to 17, and the Tianchi group has become the southernmost group and totally isolated group with irreplaceable conservation value. These results indicate that R. bieti groups in the species' southern distribution range may be undergoing recovery and that nature reserves are playing a critical role in conservation efforts. However, small group size, highly fragmented habitats, and marginal distribution in reserves mean that these two groups are still vulnerable to extinction. We accordingly make recommendations and propose management policies for their protection: the Chinese government should commit to protect the new groups by funding academic research and conservation; the reserves, conservationists, and NGOs should take appropriate actions to ensure the establishment of long-term survey and monitoring programs.
A Study on the Carrying Capacity of the Available Habitat for the Rhinopithecus Bieti Population at Mt. Laojun in Yunnan, China

Abstract:BACKGROUND, AIM, AND SCOPE:The Yunnan snub-nosed monkey is one of the most endangered primates in the world. It is experiencing a range of ongoing threats and the persisting effects of past disturbances. The prospects for this species are not very optimistic because habitat corridors are severely damaged by logging, grazing, and mining. Each group of the monkeys in different areas is facing a unique variety of threats. Based on genetic analysis, Rhinopithecus bieti should be separated into three management units for conservation, of which the Mt. Laojun management unit involves the most endangered primates. Despite the fact that the vegetation on Mt. Laojun is in a relatively pristine state, only two groups of monkeys, of a total of fewer than 300, survive in the area. With this paper, we aimed to address the capacity of the monkeys' habitat at the study site and the possible reasons for the small populations.MATERIALS AND METHODS:Rapid ecological assessment based on a SPOT 5 image and field survey was used to simulate the vegetation of the whole area based on reference ecological factors of the GIS system. The vegetation map of the site was thus derived from this simulation. Based on the previous studies, the three vegetation types were identified as the suitable habitat of the monkeys. The confusion matrix-based field GPS points were applied to analyze the precision of the habitat map. Based on the map of suitable habitat of the monkeys, the utilization of the habitat and the carrying capacity were analyzed in the GIS.RESULTS:The confusion matrix-based field GPS points were applied to the habitat analysis process, and it was found that the habitat map was 81.3% precise. Then, with the current habitat map, we found that the mixed forest currently used by the monkeys is only a very small fraction (2.65%) of the overall potential habitat of the population, while the dark conifer forest is 4.09%.DISCUSSION:Poaching is the greatest short-term threat to this species, particularly in the southern range where local residents have a strong tradition of hunting. Quite a few individual monkeys are still trapped accidentally due to the high density of traps. These problems are hard to mitigate because it is difficult to enforce laws due to the extremely rugged terrain.CONCLUSIONS:The results show that there is a great ecological capacity of the area for the monkey's survival and a great potential for an expansion of the monkey population at the site. Based on the current population and its geographical range, it can be estimated that the suitable habitat area defined by this study can support more monkeys, about many times the current population. Thus, at least in the Mt. Laojun Area, poaching pressure is the main factor to be responsible for the low density of Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys instead of habitat alteration.RECOMMENDATIONS AND PERSPECTIVES:Based on these results, some suggestions relating to conservation can be made: Focus conservation efforts on the current distribution area of the monkeys and create a 20 km buffer zone; design a long-term plan for the suitable habitat outside the buffer zone to set up a wildlife corridor in the long run; establish an association for the local hunters exploiting, their knowledge on the animals to promote monkey conservation and stop poaching. Also, the map derived from the study helps managers to allocate conservation resources more efficiently and enhances the overall outcomes of conservation measures.
Genetic Diversity, Inbreeding Level, and Genetic Load in Endangered Snub-Nosed Monkeys (Rhinopithecus)

Abstract:The snub-nosed monkey genus ( Rhinopithecus ) comprises five closely related species ( R. avunculus, R. bieti, R. brelichi, R. roxellana , and R. strykeri ). All are among the world's rarest and most endangered primates. However, the genomic impact associated with their population decline remains unknown. We analyzed population genomic data of all five snub-nosed monkey species to assess their genetic diversity, inbreeding level, and genetic load. For R. roxellana, R. bieti , and R. strykeri , population size is positively correlated with genetic diversity and negatively correlated with levels of inbreeding. Other species, however, which possess small population sizes, such as R. brelichi and R. avunculus , show high levels of genetic diversity and low levels of genomic inbreeding. Similarly, in the three populations of R. roxellana , the Shennongjia population, which possesses the lowest population size, displays a higher level of genetic diversity and lower level of genomic inbreeding. These findings suggest that although R. brelichi and R. avunculus and the Shennongjia population might be at risk, it possess significant genetic diversity and could thus help strengthen their long-term survival potential. Intriguingly, R. roxellana with large population size possess high genetic diversity and low level of genetic load, but they show the highest recent inbreeding level compared with the other snub-nosed monkeys. This suggests that, despite its large population size, R. roxellana has likely been experiencing recent inbreeding, which has not yet affected its mutational load and fitness. Analyses of homozygous-derived deleterious mutations identified in all snub-nosed monkey species indicate that these mutations are affecting immune, especially in smaller population sizes, indicating that the long-term consequences of inbreeding may be resulting in an overall reduction of immune capability in the snub-nosed monkeys, which could provide a dramatic effect on their long-term survival prospects. Altogether, our study provides valuable information concerning the genomic impact of population decline of the snub-nosed monkeys. We revealed multiple counterintuitive and unexpected patterns of genetic diversity in small and large population, which will be essential for conservation management of these endangered species.

Habitat estimates reveal that there are fewer than 400 Guizhou snub-nosed monkeys, <i>Rhinopithecus brelichi</i>, remaining in the wild

Abstract:Population size is a critical indicator used to assess the demographic profile and conservation status of animal species living in disturbed habitats. Using GIS technology, we calculated the remaining habitat area and estimated the population size of the Guizhou snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus brelichi), an Endangered primate endemic to China. The last remaining population of this species resides in the Fanjingshan National Nature Reserve (FNNR). We combined data on forest cover and patterns of group movement to estimate the size and continuity of their habitat. The results indicated that the area of remaining suitable habitat is 69.6 km(2). However the monkeys are confined to an area of only 27.8 km(2) (6.6% of the total reserve area of 419 km(2)) located in the northern part of the reserve. The remaining 28.5 km(2) of suitable habitat is located in the southern part of the reserve and inaccessible to the monkeys because of the recent construction of an aerial tram. Based on estimates of population density, we calculated that the remaining world's population of R. brelichi is approximately 125-336 individuals. In order to protect this species from extinction, we recommend that the highly fragmented evergreen and deciduous broadleaf mixed forest adjacent to the remaining troop's home range be given protected status and an active program of forest regeneration in this area be implemented immediately. Abstract:Habitat destruction, land conversion, and forest fragmentation over the past several decades have resulted in major declines and local extirpation of wild animal and plant species. The gray snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus brelichi) is currently listed among the 25 most endangered primate species in the world, with an estimated remaining wild population of less than 400 individuals. Given the potential negative effects of small population size on genetic diversity, we investigated how factors, such as climate, inbreeding, kinship, population structure, and effective population size, have contributed to their genetic status. We extracted DNA from 307 fecal samples and analyzed microsatellite diversity, sex-identifying genes, and the mtDNA control region in 179 wild individuals. Our analyses suggest that gray snub-nosed monkeys experienced an initial population decline during the Last Glacial Maximum, some 20,000 years ago. During the past 70 years, this species experienced a second, steeper population decline, coinciding with human activities. Their current effective population size (± SD) of 675 ± 292 exceeds the remaining number of individuals in the population and has declined by 93.9
The Potential Distribution and Disappearing of Yunnan Snub-Nosed Monkey: Influences of Habitat Fragmentation

Abstract:Analysis: of environmental variables and organism occurrence records offers insight that can be used to predict potential distribution areas and habitat fragmentation. For large landscapes, modeling is the most convenient and effective way to conduct habitat research. Two species distribution models, BIOMOD2 and FRAGSTATS 4.2, were given data on environmental variables and organism occurrence records as input and used to predict the potential suitable habitat and habitat fragmentation for the Yunnan snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus bieti). Our results estimated the total area of potentially suitable habitat for R. bieti as 7412.82 km(2), but only 4164.58 km(2) was found to be inhabited by R. bieti. We found that the main land cover type in the potential suitable distribution area of R. bieti was evergreen needle-leaf forest (6153.95 km(2), 83.02%). Comparison of inhabited and suitable but uninhabited habitats showed that areas actually inhabited by R. bieti had a lower patch density (PD) and higher largest patch index (LPI) than uninhabited habitats only in evergreen needle-leaf forest. The potential suitable habitats of R. bieti has increased significantly, but the actual distribution has shrunk from 1997 to 2017. Although the government has made great progress in protecting R. bieti, logging that took place before the regulations and the boundary effect of roads and rivers resulted in the local extinction of R. bieti in some potentially suitable areas. In view of this, we propose to establish a national park for Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys. We also suggest protecting the potentially suitable but currently empty habitats for later release of R. bieti. Successfully reintroducing R. bieti into areas where it formerly lived will require continual and careful habitat monitoring. (C) 2019 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.
Gut Microbiome Variations in Rhinopithecus Roxellanae Caused by Changes in the Environment

Abstract:Background The snub-nosed monkey ( Rhinopithecus roxellanae ) is an endangered animal species mainly distributed in China and needs to be protected. Gut microbiome is an important determinant of animal health and population survival as it affects the adaptation of the animals to different foods and environments under kinetic changes of intrinsic and extrinsic factors. Therefore, this study aimed to elucidate gut fecal microbiome profiles of snub-nosed monkeys affected by several extrinsic and intrinsic factors, including raising patterns (captive vs. wild), age, sex, and diarrheal status to provide a reference for making protection strategies. Results The 16S rRNA gene sequencing was firstly used to pre-check clustering of 38 fecal samples from the monkeys including 30 wild and 8 captive (5 healthy and 3 diarrheal) from three Regions of Shennongjia Nature Reserve, Hubei Province, China. Then the 24 samples with high-quality DNA from 18 wild and 6 captive (4 healthy and 2 diarrheal) monkeys were subjected to shotgun metagenomic sequencing to characterize bacterial gut microbial communities. We discovered that the raising pattern (captive and wild) rather than age and sex was the predominant factor attributed to gut microbiome structure and proportionality. Wild monkeys had significantly higher bacterial diversity and lower Bacteroidetes/Firmicutes ratios than captive animals. Moreover, the gut microbiomes in wild healthy monkeys were enriched for the genes involved in fatty acid production, while in captive animals, genes were enriched for vitamin biosynthesis and metabolism and amino acid biosynthesis from carbohydrate intermediates. Additionally, a total of 37 antibiotic resistant genes (ARG) types were detected. Unlike the microbiome diversity, the captive monkeys have a higher diversity of ARG than the wild animals. Conclusion Taken together, we highlight the importance of self-reprogramed metabolism in the snub-nosed monkey gut microbiome to help captive and wild monkeys adapt to different intrinsic and extrinsic environmental change.
Impacts of Human Activity and Climate Change on the Distribution of Snub-Nosed Monkeys in China During the Past 2000 Years

Abstract:Aim: In this article, we analysed two millennia of historical records and environmental information to reconstruct the past distribution and examine the current distribution of snub-nosed monkeys (Rhinopithecus) in China. Location: China. Methods: We applied trend surface analysis (TSA) to document patterns of range shifting in snub-nosed monkeys over time. Random forest was used to study the association between explanatory variables and changes in the distribution of snub-nosed monkeys over the past 2000 years. Results: Our results showed that both the longitude and latitude of snub-nosed monkeys contracted from 0 to 2000 AD. We found that the integrated effects of human population size and changes in temperature in the Northern Hemisphere resulted in a westward and northward contraction of the snub-nosed monkey distributional range. However, the impact of fluctuating temperature was greatest during periods of low human population density (0-1200 AD), whereas from 1200 to 2000 AD, marked increases in human population size in China leading to extensive deforestation, agricultural expansion, hunting, logging and land terracing have had the greatest negative effects. Further analyses highlighted the fact that the rapid expansion of human population density in regions occupied by snub-nosed monkeys between 1700 and 2000 has resulted in the recent extirpation of this primate radiation in eastern, south-eastern and central China. Main conclusions: We examined the interactive effects of human population growth, deforestation, agricultural expansion and climate variation on the past and current distribution of snub-nosed monkeys. Our data provide clear evidence that climate change, human population increase and human activities have differentially affected the viability and distribution of snub-nosed monkey populations over time. In particular, the marked expansion of the human population in China over the past 300 years has resulted in the extinction of Rhinopithecus populations across much of its range.
Population Genomics Reveals Low Genetic Diversity and Adaptation to Hypoxia in Snub-Nosed Monkeys

Abstract:Snub-nosed monkeys (genus Rhinopithecus) are a group of endangered colobines endemic to South Asia. Here, we re-sequenced the whole genomes of 38 snub-nosed monkeys representing four species within this genus. By conducting population genomic analyses, we observed a similar load of deleterious variation in snub-nosed monkeys living in both smaller and larger populations and found that genomic diversity was lower than that reported in other primates. Reconstruction of Rhinopithecus evolutionary history suggested that episodes of climatic variation over the past 2 million years, associated with glacial advances and retreats and population isolation, have shaped snub-nosed monkey demography and evolution. We further identified several hypoxia-related genes under selection in R. bieti (black snub-nosed monkey), a species that exploits habitats higher than any other nonhuman primate. These results provide the first detailed and comprehensive genomic insights into genetic diversity, demography, genetic burden, and adaptation in this radiation of endangered primates.

Abstract:Study on effects of climate change on species is very popular and necessary at present. This paper investigated the effects of climate change on the distribution of snub-nosed monkey in China using Arcgis and Maxent model. It compared the historical and modern distribution of snub-nosed monkey in China, and evaluated the effects of climate change on Rhinopithecus bieti to explore effects on the distribution of snub-nosed monkey, so as to protect them. Results indicate that the distribution range of snub-nosed monkey has decreased greatly from the previous 17 to 8 provinces. The distribution trends are from north to south, east to west, dense to sparse and form several isolated distribution areas. Moreover, six precipitation variables are identified as having remarkable effects on the habitat suitability of Rhinopithecus bieti and therefore protective actions can be taken accordingly.

Abstract:Aim Determining the mechanisms by which climate change and human activities affect patterns of ecological specialization in different genetic units of the same species is crucial for developing local or regionally-based conservation solutions. This study uses species distribution models and genetic analysis to (1) identify the evidence of intraspecific differences in the population size and distribution of the three extant lineages (Sichuan/Gansu (SG), Qinling (QL) and Shennongjia (SNJ)) of Sichuan snub-nosed monkeys and (2) determine why some lineages have lower population numbers, a smaller geographical distribution, and are more threatened with extinction. Location China. Methods We used n-dimensional hypervolume modelling and genotype-environment association (GEA) models to compare the climatic niches of three snub-nosed monkey lineages, SDMs to reconstruct the historical, current and future distributions of each lineage and SMC++ to calculate their effective population sizes. Results We found evidence of: (1) climatic niche differentiation among the SG, QL and SNJ lineages of Sichuan snub-nosed monkeys; (2) geographical isolation combined with a decrease in population size during the LGM resulted in ecological specialization among these three lineages; and (3) a decline in climatic suitability and anthropogenically driven land conversion, combined with small population size and a narrow distributional range, indicates that the SNJ lineage is at a greater risk of extinction than the SG and QL lineages. Main conclusions We demonstrate that during the LGM a reduction in habitat suitability driven by climate change, in concert with decreasing population size, resulted in the geographical isolation of the three Sichuan snub-nosed monkey subpopulations, leading to lineage differences in ecological specialization. GEA models and hypervolume models demonstrated that the three lineages occupy different ecological niches. Based on lineage-level models, the SNJ and QL lineages should be the immediate focus of conservation efforts due to their small effective population size and expected future reductions in available suitable habitats. The modelling approach used here is robust and can be applied effectively to examine the biogeography, recent evolutionary history and effective population size of other endangered animal taxa.
Climate change and anthropogenic activities shrink the range and dispersal of an endangered primate in Sichuan Province, China

Abstract:The golden snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana) is a rare and endemic species in China. The population of golden snub-nosed monkeys in Sichuan Province has an isolated genetic status, large population size, and low genetic diversity, making it highly vulnerable to environmental changes. Our study aimed to evaluate the potential impact of climate and land-use changes on the distribution and dispersal paths of the species in Sichuan Province. We used three general circulation models (GCMs), three greenhouse gas emission scenarios, and three land-use change scenarios suitable for China to predict the potential distributions of the golden snub-nosed monkey in the current and 2070s using the MaxEnt model. The dispersal paths were identified by the circuit theory. Our results suggested that the habitats of the golden snub-nosed monkey were reduced under all three GCM scenarios. The suitable habitats for the golden snub-nosed monkey would be reduced by 82.67%, 82.47%, and 75.17% under the RCP2.6, RCP4.5, and RCP8.5 scenarios, respectively, compared to the currently suitable habitat area. Additionally, we found that the density of future dispersal paths of golden snub-nosed monkeys would decrease, and the dispersal resistance would increase. Therefore, relevant wildlife protection agencies should prioritize the climatically suitable distributions and key dispersal paths of golden snub-nosed monkeys to improve their conservation. We identified key areas for habitat preservation and increased habitat connectivity under climate change, which could serve as a reference for future adaptation strategies.

Abstract:The blood samples of 19 individuals of Sichuan snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopichecus roxellana) from two different geological regions were investigated in this study.All of forty-four genetic loci surveyed were monomorphic.Its mean heterozygosity,a measurement of genetic diversity,was zero.Considering the larger size of population and better living state of Sichuan snub-nosed monkey than Yunnan snubnosed monkey (R.bieti),we inferred that Sichuan snub-nosed monkey might have experienced previous bottleneck,and after this,its population recovered.The speculation is also supported by geological data.

Abstract:The intestinal microbiota plays an important role in maintaining the health of its host, including human and nonhuman primates. Little is known about the intestinal bacterial composition of the Sichuan snub-nosed monkey (Rhinopithecus roxellana), which has been classified as Endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List since 2003. We evaluated the fecal bacterial compositions of 11 Sichuan snub-nosed monkeys, including six young captive individuals (one sample from each), three adult captive individuals (four samples each), and two adult provisioned free-ranging individuals (four samples each). We also quantified fecal Bacteroides vulgatus, Bifidobacterium spp., and Lactobacillus spp., which are defined as probiotics in humans, using real-time polymerase chain reaction. We identified five major phyla in the collected samples, including Firmicutes (32.4 %), Bacteroidetes (14.7 %), Verrucomicrobia (8.8 %), Actinobacteria (4.4 %), and unclassified microbacteria (39.7 %). Fecal bacteria composition varied with age and different seasons. The fecal bacterial composition of the captive monkeys was less variable than that of provisioned free-ranging monkeys. B. vulgatus amounts were almost 100 times higher in the provisioned free-ranging monkeys (10(12)) than in the captive monkeys (10(10)). Our results provide an initial catalogue of gut microbiota in the Sichuan snub-nosed monkey, which helps to enrich our knowledge of gut microbiota in nonhuman primates.
