Abstract:•Loading content and loading efficiency of insulin by the complex micelles were remarkably increased.•PNIPAM domains could prevent protease degradation and enhance the efficacy of insulin.•Glucose-responsive and “on-off” controlled release of insulin were achieved.•The insulin loaded complex micelles could effectively regulate the blood glucose levels in vivo.
