Abstract:Periphyton plays a significant role in heavy metal transfer in wetlands, but its contribution to cadmium (Cd) bioavailability in paddy fields remains largely unexplored. The main aim of this study was to investigate the effect of periphyton on Cd behavior in paddy fields. Periphyton significantly decreased Cd concentrations in paddy waters. Non-invasive micro-test technology analyses indicated that periphyton can absorb Cd from water with a maximum Cd2+ influx rate of 394 pmol cm(-2) s(-1) and periphyton intrusion significantly increased soil Cd concentrations. However, soil Cd bioavailability declined significantly due to soil pH increase and soil redox potential (Eh) decrease induced by periphyton. With periphyton, more Cd was adsorbed and immobilized on organic matter, carbonates, and iron and manganese oxides in soil. Consequently, Cd content in rice decreased significantly. These findings give insights into Cd biogeochemistry in paddy fields with periphyton, and may provide a novel strategy for reducing Cd accumulation in rice. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:It is unknown how the Cd-mediated changes in the rhizospheric nitrifier community affect plant growth under different water management practices. This study examined the effect of Cd on microbial N transformation and its association with rice growth in two water regimes, continuous flooding (CF) and alternate wetting and drying (AWD), in a paddy soil. The 16S rRNA, amoA genes in the rhizosphere and endosphere, and OsNTRs were determined using qPCR. Nitrifier community analysis was performed by sequencing the amoA genes. Concentrations of N and Cd in shoots and roots, and IAA in the roots were determined by flow injection analyzer, ICP-MS and enzyme-linked immunosorbent (ELISA), respectively. The direct and indirect negative effects of Cd bioavailability in the rhizosphere on plant growth and ultra-structure of roots and leaves were greater under AWD than CF after 56-day growth. Nitrifier community was changed by water and Cd treatments. Crenarchaeota, Nitrosopumilus, Nitrosopira, and Nitrosovibrio tenuis related species were the dominant nitrifier players. Increasing Cd level decreased plant N uptake, root-IAA concentration, and the abundance of 16S rRNA gene in the rhizosphere and endosphere to a greater extent under AWD than under CF. This in turn decreased the colonization of endophytes and the surface area of the roots, leading to decreased N uptake from the soil. The results imply that appropriate water management and rhizospheric engineering in Cd-contaminated paddy fields may be important approaches to decreasing plant Cd uptake and rhizospheric nitrification.
Effects of Fe3O4 Nanoparticles and Nano Hydroxyapatite on Pb and Cd Stressed Rice (oryza Sativa L.) Seedling

Abstract:Nowadays, Lead (Pb) and Cadmium (Cd) contamination in rice is an important worldwide environmental concern. Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) and Nano hydroxyapatite (n-HAP) are promising materials to manage Pb and Cd contamination. This study systematically investigated the effect of Fe3O4 NPs and n-HAP on Pb and Cd stressed rice seedlings' growth, oxidative stress, Pb and Cd uptake and subcellular distribution in roots. Furthermore, we clarified the immobilization mechanism of Pb and Cd in the hydroponic system. Fe3O4 NPs and n-HAP could reduce Pb and Cd uptake of rice mainly through decreasing Pb and Cd concentrations in culture solution and combining with Pb and Cd in root tissues. Pb and Cd were immobilized by Fe3O4 NPs through complex sorption processes and by n-HAP through dissolution-precipitation and cation exchange, respectively. On the 7th day, 1000 mg/L Fe3O4 NPs reduced the contents of Pb and Cd in shoots by 90.4% and 95.8%, in roots by 23.6% and 12.6%, 2000 mg/L n-HAP reduced the contents of Pb and Cd in shoots by 94.7% and 97.3%, in roots by 93.7% and 77.6%, respectively. Both NPs enhanced the growth of rice seedlings by alleviating oxidative stress and upregulating glutathione secretion and antioxidant enzymes activity. However, Cd uptake of rice was promoted at certain concentrations of NPs. The subcellular distribution of Pb and Cd in roots indicated that both NPs decreased the percentage of Pb and Cd in the cell wall, which was unfavorable for Pb and Cd immobilization in roots. Cautious choice was needed when using these NPs to manage rice Pb and Cd contamination.
Nano Hydroxyapatite Pre-Treatment Effectively Reduces Cd Accumulation in Rice (oryza Sativa L.) and Its Impact on Paddy Microbial Communities.

Abstract:Cadmium (Cd) contamination in paddy soil has become a worldwide concern and severely endangered human health. Nano hydroxyapatite (n-HAP) is a practical material to manage paddy Cd pollution, but its dosage should not be excessive. Based on previous studies, we validated the effect of n-HAP pre-treatment on rice Cd uptake in pot and field experiments. The results indicated that n-HAP pre-treatment effectively restricted Cd translocation in the soil-rice system. In pot experiment, when soil n-HAP concentration was 5000 mg/kg, the Cd content in the grains of n-HAP pre-treated rice was 0.171 mg/kg, decreased by 29.3% compared with normal rice (0.242 mg/kg). In field experiment, when soil n-HAP concentration was 20,000 mg/kg, the Cd content in the grains of n-HAP pre-treated rice was 0.156 mg/kg, decreased by 35.3% compared with normal rice (0.241 mg/kg). The primary mechanism was that n-HAP pre-treatment altered the formation and composition of iron plaque and therefore enhanced the Cd binding ability of iron plaque. The available N and P content and urease activity in paddy field were increased. We further investigated the impact of n-HAP on the diversity and structure of paddy microbial communities. The Chao1 and Shannon diversity indices showed no significant difference. The relative abundance of Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria was significantly decreased by n-HAP, indicating that Cd pollution might be alleviated. Desulfobacterota, Gemmatimonadota, and Geobacteraceae were significantly enriched by n-HAP. The declining relative abundance of Basidiomycota and the increasing relative abundance of other fungal taxa also suggested that n-HAP could alleviate Cd toxicity in soil.

Abstract:Periphyton is ubiquitous in rice paddy fields, however its role in paddy soil arsenic (As) biogeochemistry remains unexplored. In this study, microcosm incubations and extensive field sampling were used to better understand the roles of periphyton on As mobility and transformation at the soil-water interface. Microcosm incubations revealed that periphyton on the paddy soil surface enhanced As release to water and increased methylated As contents at the soil-water interface. Experimental additions of dissolved phosphate did not significantly affect these processes. The presence of periphyton increased the dissolved organic carbon (DOC) content of the surface soil which may have played a role in the increased As mobility. However, the increase in methylated As species at the soil-water interface is indicative of detoxification processes of As by periphyton. The results from the field study revealed a high abundance and diversity of As biotransformation and detoxification genes in periphyton. Genera of Kineosporia, Limisphaera, Ornatilinea, Ktedonosporobacter and Anaerolinea played key roles in shaping arsM harboring microbe communities in field periphyton. These results highlight the importance of periphyton in the behavior of As in paddy soils and can potentially facilitate improved management of As contamination in paddy soils.
The Influence of Periphyton on the Migration and Transformation of Arsenic in the Paddy Soil: Rules and Mechanisms

Abstract:Periphyton, composed of algae, bacteria, protozoa, epiphytes, and detritus, is widely distributed on the surfaces of paddy soils. Little is known about the interactions between the periphyton and arsenic (As) in the paddy soil. In the present study, model paddy ecosystems with and without periphyton were set up to explore the effects of periphyton on As migration and transformation in soil. According to the results, periphyton played dual roles in the mobility of As in soil. Periphyton on the surface of paddy soil could significantly increase the mobility and bioavailability of As in soils in the rice tillering stage because of the increased pH and the decreased Eh. The As uptake by rice also increased in the presence of periphyton. However, a significant fraction of the released As was further entrapped by the periphyton, significantly decreasing As concentration in pore water. As biotransformation genes, including aioA, arrA, arsC, and arsM, were identified in periphyton, with arsM being the most abundant in periphyton and soil. Periphyton significantly decreased the abundance of aioA, but increased the abundance of arsC in soils. Cupriavidus and Afipia, which are involved in As(V) cytoplasmic reduction, significantly increased in the presence of periphyton. Periphyton exerted minor effects on the highly abundant and predominant bacteria but had major effects on the less abundant bacteria in the paddy soil. The results of the present study could facilitate the regulation of As contamination in paddy soil, and enhance our understanding of the role of periphyton in the As biogeochemical cycle. Root-induced Changes to Cadmium Speciation in the Rhizosphere of Two Rice (oryza Sativa L.) Genotypes

Abstract:Our aim was to investigate rhizosphere effects on the chemical behavior of Cd. This was done in a glasshouse experiment, where two rice cultivars (Zhenong54 and Sixizhan) were grown in soil spiked with cadmium (Cd) at two levels, 3.9 ± 0.5 and 8.3 ± 0.5 mg kg(-1) soil, placed in a rhizobox until ripening stage. Chemical forms of cadmium near the root surface were then assessed using a sequential extraction procedure (SEP). There were significant differences in Cd species, especially exchangeable Cd (EXC-Cd) between the two rice cultivars as affected by rice roots. The lowest EXC-Cd with Zhenong54 appeared in the near-rhizosphere area with little difference between tillering stage and ripening stage while Sixizhan had its lowest EXC-Cd concentration in the root compartment. Both cultivars had slight changes in the Fe/Mn oxide-bound fraction of Cd (FMO-Cd) at the grain ripening stage while the control treatments without plants had a significant increase in FMO-Cd at the same time, indicating a transformation from a less bioavailable form (FMO-Cd) to more bioavailable forms (EXC-Cd). Soil microbial biomass in the vicinity of the root surface had opposite trends to some extent with EXC-Cd, partly because of the root-induced changes to bioavailable Cd. Unlike Zhenong54, Sixizhan had a higher Cd concentration in the root, but only a small proportion of Cd translocated from the root to grain.

Abstract:Cadmium (Cd) contamination in farmland poses a significant threat to food security in staple crops, especially rice. Using a mix of hydroponic and soil culture methods, stable isotope tracers, and advanced analytical techniques, this study elucidated the mechanisms of Cd uptake, translocation, and accumulation in rice throughout different growth stages. Despite a notable linear correlation between soil DTPA (diethylene-triaminepentaacetic acid)-Cd and the total Cd concentration of rice, our findings showed that the influence of soil Cd level on the proportion of Cd in grain was negligible. The study highlighted the dynamic response of Cd distribution within plant nodes to changes in DTPA-extractable Cd. Heading stage (HS) and mature stage (MS) were critical for Cd uptake and upward transport in rice, and the contribution of Cd absorption in brown rice was 28.61% and 40.16%, respectively. Moreover, the distribution of Cd in nodes showed how important nodes are for controlling and redistributing Cd in rice. In the HS, the lower node had a function in re-transporting, whereas in the MS, there was a considerable redistribution of Cd in the upper node.These insights can help us understand rice Cd dynamics and develop agronomic techniques and rice cultivars that minimize Cd accumulation.

Abstract:Cadmium accumulation in rice grains is highly dependent on its bioavailability that affected by various physicochemical properties and microbiological processes of soil. The rhizospheric bacterial communities of rice grown in contaminated soils by means of rice cultivars highly or weakly accumulating Cd in grains (HA and LA, respectively) were investigated. HA roots absorbed 7.26- and 2.25-fold more Cd than did LA roots at low (0.44 mg kg(-1)) and high (6.66 mg kg(-1)) soil Cd levels, respectively. Regardless of Cd levels, Cd bioavailability in the rhizosphere of HA was significantly higher than that of LA. Planting of rice and elevated Cd levels both significantly decreased bacterial alpha-diversity and altered bacterial community structure, with noticeable differences between the rice cultivars. Taxa specifically enriched in the HA rhizosphere (phyla Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Deltaproteobacteria) can directly or indirectly participate in metal activation, whereas the LA rhizosphere was highly colonized by plant growth promoting taxa (phyla Alphaproteobacteria and Gammaproteobacteria). The results indicate a potential association of Cd uptake and accumulation with rhizosphere bacteria in rice grown on a contaminated soil, thus providing baseline data and a new perspective on the maintenance of rice security. Arsenic and Cadmium Bioavailability to Rice ( Oryza Sativa L.) Plant in Paddy Soil: Influence of Sulfate Application

Abstract:Arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) accumulate easily in rice grains that pose a non-negligible threat to human health worldwide. Sulfur fertilizer has been shown to affect the mobilization of As and Cd in paddy soil, but the effect of co-contamination by As and Cd has not been explored. This study selected three soils co-contaminated with As and Cd from Shangyu (SY), Tongling (TL) and Ma'anshan (MA). Incubation experiments and pot experiments were carried out to explore the effect of sulfate supply (100 mg kg-1) on the bioavailability of As and Cd in soil and the rice growth. The results showed that the exogenous sulfate decreased As concentrations in porewater of SY and TL by 51.1% and 29.2% through forming arsenic-sulfide minerals. The exchangeable Cd in soil also declined by 25.6% and 18.6% and transformed into Fe and Mn oxides-bound Cd. The relative abundance of Desulfotomaculum, Desulfurispora and dsr gene increased remarkably indicated that sulfate addition stimulated the activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria. In MA soil, sulfate addition immobilized Cd but had little effect on As solubility, which was speculated to be related to the high sulfate background of the soil. Further pot experiments showed that sulfate application significantly increased rice tillers, biomass, chlorophyll content in shoots, and decreased electrolyte leakage in root. Finally, sulfate significantly reduced As and Cd in SY rice shoots by 60.2% and 40.8%, respectively, while As decreased by 39.6% in TL rice shoots and Cd decreased by 23.0% in MA rice shoots. These results indicate that the application of sulfate can reduce the bioavailability of As and Cd in the soil-rice system and promote rice growth, and it is possible to reduce the accumulation of As and Cd in rice plants simultaneously.

Abstract:In recent years, the problem of Cd pollution in paddy fields has become more and more serious, which seriously threatens the safe production of food crops and human health. Using microorganisms to reduce cadmium pollution in rice fields is a green, safe and efficient method, the complicated interactions between the microbes in rice roots throughout the process of cadmium absorption by rice roots are poorly understood. In this investigation, a hydroponic pot experiment was used to examine the effects of bacteria R3 ( Herbaspirillum sp) and T4 ( Bacillus cereus ) on cadmium uptake and the endophytic bacterial community in rice roots. The results showed that compared with CK (Uninoculated bacterial liquid), the two strains had significant inhibitory or promotive effects on cadmium uptake in rice plant, respectively. Among them, the decrease of cadmium content in rice plants by R3 strain reached 78.57-79.39%, and the increase of cadmium content in rice plants by T4 strain reached 140.49-158.19%. Further investigation showed that the cadmium content and root cadmium enrichment coefficient of rice plants were significantly negatively correlated with the relative abundances of Burkholderia and Acidovorax , and significantly positively correlated with the relative abundances of Achromobacter , Agromyces and Acidocella . Moreover, a more complex network of microbes in rice roots inhibited rice plants from absorbing cadmium. These results suggest that cadmium uptake by rice plants is closely related to the endophytic bacterial community of roots. This study provides a reference scheme for the safe production of crops in cadmium contaminated paddies and lays a solid theoretical foundation for subsequent field applications.

Abstract:Two contrasting rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars, i.e. Wuyujing 3 (WYJ3, Cd-tolerant) and Shanyou 63 (SY63, Cd-sensitive), were grown on a red soil (Ultisol) to study both individual and combined phytotoxicity of arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) in terms of Cd and As availability, their uptake and accumulation, antioxidant defense activity and oxidative damage. The antioxidant defense system examined in this study included enzymatic and non-enzymatic molecular antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), glutathione (GSH) and ascorbic acid (AsA). Results showed that As or Cd treatment decreased root and shoot biomass in both cultivars compared with their corresponding control (no Cd or As treatment), although less severe inhibition of plant growth was observed in WYJ3 than in SY63. Moreover, rice growth was inhibited more severely by Cd treatment than by As treatment, which could be explained by the higher amount of available Cd (60%) (0.1M HCl-extractable Cd) compared to the lower amount of available As (15%) (0.5M NaH2PO4-extractable As) in their postharvest soils. However, shoot biomass in cultivar SY63, and root and shoot biomass in cultivar WYJ3 were significantly higher in the As plus Cd treatment than in the Cd treatment alone, showing that the combined toxicity of these two heavy metals was not additive and on the contrary, As mitigated Cd-induced growth inhibition. The As plus Cd treatment also significantly decreased As or Cd concentrations both in roots and in shoots of the two rice cultivars compared with the As or Cd treatment alone, respectively. On the other hand, treatment with As or Cd alone significantly decreased the SOD and POD activities, and GSH and AsA concentrations, while the activities of these enzymes and the concentrations of GSH and AsA were significantly higher in the As plus Cd treatment than in the Cd treatment alone, resulting in less severe oxidative damage as indicated by the lower concentration of MDA in the As plus Cd treatment (P<0.05). However, no significant difference was observed in the antioxidant defense activity between the As plus Cd treatment and the As treatment alone. These results suggest that the combined toxicity of As and Cd in rice is lower than that of individual Cd or As, which might be attributed to the decreased uptake and accumulation of Cd and As, and the less oxidative stress caused by the interactive effects of As with Cd both in rhizosphere and in plants.

Abstract:Cadmium (Cd) contamination in rice (Oryza sativa) is particularly problematic due to its high risk to human health. Investigating the hidden roles of seed endophytes of rice in influencing Cd accumulation is essential to comprehensively understand the effects of biotic and abiotic factors to food security. Here, the content of Cd in soils and rice (Huanghuazhan) seeds from 19 sites along the Yangtze River exhibited considerable differences. From a biotic perspective, we observed the dominant endophytic bacteria, Stenotrophomonas (7.25 %), contribute to Cd control of rice (below 0.2 mg kg<sup>-1</sup>). Partial Least Squares (PLS) analysis further suggested that Enterobacteriaceae (15.48 %), altitude and pH were found to be the strong variables that might reduce the Cd uptake of rice. In contrast, Cytophagaceae (0.58 %), latitude and mean annual air pressure had the opposite effect. In pot experiments, after respectively inoculating the isolated endophytic bacteria Stenotrophomonas T4 and Enterobacter R1, N1 (f_Enterobacteriaceae), the Cd contents in shoot decreased by 47.6 %, 21.9 % and 33.0 % compared to controls. The distribution of Cd resistant genes (e.g., czcABC, nccAB, cznA) of Stenotrophomonas, Enterobacteriaceaea and Cytophagaceae further suggested their distinct manners in influencing the Cd uptake of rice. Abstract:Rice consumption is a major pathway for human cadmium (Cd) exposure. Understanding Cd behavior in the soil-rice system, especially under field conditions, is pivotal for controlling Cd accumulation. This study analyzed Cd concentrations and isotope compositions (δ114/110Cd) in rice plants and surface soil sampled at different times, along with urinary Cd of residents from typical Cd-contaminated paddy fields in Youxian, Hunan, China. Soil water-soluble Cd concentrations varied across sampling times, with δ114/110Cdwater lighter under drained than flooded conditions, suggesting supplementation of water-soluble Cd by isotopically lighter Cd pools, increasing Cd phytoavailability. Both water-soluble Cd and atmospheric deposition contributed to rice Cd accumulation. Water-soluble Cd's contribution increased from 28-52% under flooded to 58-87% under drained conditions due to increased soil Cd phytoavailability. Atmospheric deposition's contribution (12-72%) increased with potential atmospheric deposition flux among sampling areas. The enrichment of heavy Cd isotopes occurred from root-stem-grain to prevent rice Cd accumulation. The different extent of enrichment of heavy isotopes in urine indicated different Cd exposure sources. These findings provide valuable insights into the speciation and phytoavailability changes of Cd in the soil-rice system and highlight the potential application of Cd isotopic fingerprinting in understanding the environmental fate of Cd.
Growth and Uptake of Pb,Cd and As of Rice in Polluted Soils

Abstract:Pot experiments were conducted to study the effects of Pb, Cd and As in single and combined forms in three different kinds of soils on the yield of and accumulation of heavy metals in rice (Oryza sativa L.). The results showed that, in the red soil, As treatment decreased rice yield significantly, except Cd treatment which showed little affect on rice yield other treatments decreased rice yields significantly, while the coexistence of Pb or Cd aggravated the toxicity of As, whereas, the combined effect of Pb-Cd-As on rice yield in other two soils was less significant than that in the red soil. But straw yields were different between the treatment Pb, Pb-Cd-As and the control (CK). In Wushan soils, only the treatment of As and Pb-Cd-As decreased rice yields compared with CK, and the combined treatments reduced straw yields. In the red soil, rice Cd concentrations of the treatments of Cd-As, Pb-Cd and Pb-Cd-As decreased by 15.7%, 11.5% and 25.6% compared with single Cd treatment, respectively. Pb treatment increased significantly rice Pb concentration in red soil, but Pb-As treatment decreased it. The concentrations of heavy metals in rice were in the following order as red soil Qingzi soil Wushan soil.

Abstract:Background and aims Large areas of paddy fields have been contaminated by cadmium (Cd) in both China and worldwide, resulting in excessive Cd accumulation in rice grains. Here, we investigated the effects of cultivars, water regimes, and growth stages on Cd accumulation in rice with different radial oxygen loss (ROL). Methods Two groups of experiments were conducted: pot trials with soil-added Cd and solution-added agar using 20 rice cultivars and a rhizobag trial with Cd-contaminated soil and pot trial with solution-added agar under flooded and non-flooded water regimes with three growth stages and two cultivars. Results Different rice cultivars exhibited different porosity, Cd tolerance, and Cd accumulation in grains, which were significantly correlated with ROL. Cd concentration in shoots was significantly lower under the flooded (0.13–1.01, mean 0.56 mg kg −1 ) than non-flooded regime (0.68–1.39, mean 0.97 mg kg −1 ). The low Cd-accumulating cultivar showed higher rates of ROL, higher Cd combined with Fe plaque formation, and lower Cd bioavailability in the rhizosphere soil than the high-Cd accumulating cultivar. Conclusions Rice cultivars grown under flooded regimes effectively reduced Cd accumulation in edible parts, and the later stage was crucial for reducing Cd accumulation. Low Cd-accumulating cultivars generally exhibited a higher ability to reduce Cd bioavailability in the rhizosphere soil.

Abstract:Cadmium(Cd)is important contaminants in agricultural soil and threatening agriculture and human health.With the development of industry and agriculture,the soil heavy metal cadmium pollution becomes more and more serious.In this study,two high-yielding rice cul-tivars currently used in the local production,Boyou 225,Short glutinous treated with five levels of cadmium in a pot experiment was conduct-ed to study the correlation between Cd accumulation of brown rice and that of paddy soils.Results showed that cadmium was not distributed uniformly in each part of rice plants.Most of the absorbed Cd assembled in the root,the upper,the less.The law of distribution of Cd in differ-ent organs of rice was:root > stem > rice husk > kernels.In rice roots and stems and leaves,cadmium was mainly distributed in the cell wall.Soluble components of cells,cell distribution of low cadmium.That is,F1(Cell wall)> F3(soluble part)> F2(cell organelles and membrane part).The rice varieties exhibited the genetic character on the Cadmium accumulation.The Cadmium contents of the grains increased with the increasing Cd concentration in soil.According to the state limit of cadmium in rice,the standard(GB 2762-2005),Content≤ 0.2 mg.kg-1.In this study,tropical paddy soil total Cd threshold were Boyou225(Cd total)= 2.0 mg.kg-1;Short glutinous(Cd total)= 3.1 mg.kg-1.There-fore,for reducing the risk of the humanity to heavy metal,the rice varieties with the low capability of accumulating heavy metal in grains could be planted in a polluted soil.

Abstract:<h3 class="Heading">Background</h3><p class="Para">Arsenic (As) and cadmium (Cd) are two toxic elements that have a relatively high risk of transfer from paddy soil to rice grain. Rice is a major dietary source of these two elements for populations consuming rice as a staple food. Reducing their accumulation in rice grain is important for food safety and human health.</p><h3 class="Heading">Scope</h3><p class="Para">We review recent progress in understanding the biogeochemical processes controlling As and Cd bioavailability in paddy soil, the mechanisms of their uptake, translocation and detoxification in rice plants, and strategies to reduce their accumulation in rice grain. Similarities and differences between the two elements are emphasized. Some knowledge gaps are also identified.</p><h3 class="Heading">Conclusions</h3><p class="Para">The concentrations of As and Cd in rice grain vary by three orders of magnitude, depending on the bioavailability of the two elements in soil, rice genotype and growing conditions. The redox potential in paddy soil has a profound but opposite effect on As and Cd bioavailability, whereas soil pH affects Cd bioavailability more than As bioavailability. A number of key genes involved in As and Cd uptake, translocation, sequestration, and detoxification in rice have been characterized. Allelic variations of several genes underlying the variations in Cd accumulation have been identified, but more remains to be elucidated, especially for As. Two types of strategies can be used to reduce As and Cd accumulation, reducing their bioavailability in soil or their uptake and translocation in rice. Reducing the accumulation of both As and Cd in rice simultaneously remains a great challenge.</p>

Abstract:Although increasing attention has been paid to agronomic measures for reducing the heavy metal load in rice grain, the effects of duckweed-paddy co-cropping technology on the accumulation of cadmium (Cd) in rice grains remain unclear. To investigate its specific effects on Cd accumulation in paddy fields, three types of duckweed-like hydrophyte (DH), Azolla imbricata , Spirodela polyrrhiza, and Lemna minor were chosen for study. Their use resulted in a reduction of Cd content in rice grains from 0.40 mg/kg to <0.20 mg/kg, with A. imbricata yielding the best results (0.15 mg/kg). The three types of DH reduced the available Cd content in the soil by 10 % to 35 % after the paddy tillering stage. The reduction of available Cd content was attributed to the absorption, high pH, and increase of relative abundance of special bacteria of immobilizing Cd. In addition, DH could regulate soil nitrogen leading to ammonium nitrogen increased from 75 mg/kg to 100 mg/kg, while nitrate nitrogen decreased from 0.55 to 0.1–0.3 mg/kg. The increase of ammonium nitrogen content might induce the low Cd transfer ability in rice plant and then low Cd content in rice grain. This study demonstrated that DH has a good effect on the reduction of the Cd concentration in rice grains. Consequently, duckweed-paddy co-cropping technology offers a potential solution to heavy metal pollution and agricultural non-point source pollution, as it not only reduces Cd levels in rice plants, but also fixes nitrogen, reducing the need for nitrogen application.
