Abstract:Against the backdrop of the global heightened geopolitical tensions and climate change, the issue of food security is a major topic currently faced by countries around the globe. As the most populous country in the world, China's food security issues will impact the sustainability of global food production and supply stability. Despite the emphasis on food security and cultivated land protection, China is facing the latent threat to food production caused by the non-grain use of cultivated land, where land previously used for cultivating food crops is being extensively planted with cash crops or used for forestry development. Not only will this phenomenon increase the pressure on China's self-sufficiency in food, but it will also damage the stability of the agricultural ecosystem and weaken the sustainability of food production in the long term. As the main grain-producing area in Sichuan Province and even in western China, the Sichuan Basin has a solid agricultural foundation. In recent years, the phenomenon of non-grain use has become increasingly prominent, necessitating an exploration of its driving mechanisms and the implementation of governance measures. Set in the Sichuan Basin, this paper employed the sliding window method to continuously monitor and extract the non-grain patches between 1991-2018 in the study area based on the annual China Land Cover Dataset (CLCD). We used advanced data-driven approaches, including geographically weighted regression models and geographical detector models, to explore the direction and strength of the impact of driving factors on the non-grain phenomenon. Finally, using process tracing based on policy texts, non-grain evolution is interpreted. In conclusion, increased economic activity exacerbates non-grain use, and objective spatial positions constrain the impact of locational factors on non-grain use. Natural factors fundamentally and decisively explain the level of non-grain use. Decreased temperature and increased slope will intensify this phenomenon, and the impact of precipitation on non-grain exhibits a threshold effect. China's three agricultural structural adjustments have potentially influenced the overall trend of the non-grain phenomenon. The Wenchuan earthquake and subsequent reconstruction had a short-term impact, while the central and local government's attention to the issue of non-grain and a series of arable land protection measures are the main reasons for the sharp decrease in the non-grain phenomenon after 2015. Differentiated policy measures are recommended for mountainous and plain regions to address these socio-ecosystem changes, balancing the goals of food production and ecological protection. This approach will ensure grain production is more adaptable to climate change and aligned with the intensity of economic activities.

Abstract:Excessive use of agricultural chemicals and unreasonable utilization of agricultural wastes have led to severe agricultural non-point source pollution (ANPSP) problems in China. Based on the agricultural pollution loads and pollution control strength, the ecological risk index (ERI) was constructed and was used to explore the spatial-temporal pattern of agricultural ecological risks in China during 1978–2017. The findings indicated that Chinese agricultural ERI was gradually increased from 0.031 to 0.348 in 1978–2017, which has the same phased change characteristics as the succession of agricultural policies. At present, the ecological risk grade of ANPSP was present in the stair-step distribution characteristics of “high in the east and south and low in the west and north” as a whole. Southern China, as the main producing area of aquatic products, had the higher ecological risks. Northeastern China, the Huang-Huai-Hai Area, and the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, as the grain-producing bases, had moderate ecological risks, but Southwestern China and Northwestern China with the poor agricultural production conditions had the lower ecological risks. It evidently showed that the ecological risk problems faced by the high-quality development of Chinese agricultural industrialization are increasingly severe.

Abstract:Scale plays a pivotal role in shaping ecological patterns and processes, affecting the features and interrelationships of ecosystem services (ESs). Understanding the scale effects on the spatiotemporal characteristics of ESs and their relationships is crucial for sustainable management of ecosystem and the preservation of human well-being. This is particularly essential for cropland ecosystems, which have multiple functions closely linked to essential human needs. Our study aimed to enhance understanding of the complex interactions among diverse cropland ESs at multiple scales and explore the impact of spatial scale on ESs and their relationships. We conducted our study in the Hangzhou Bay area, which is located in the eastern coastal region of China, using a multi-scale framework that integrated the CASA, RUSLE, and InVEST models. This allowed us to analyze the spatial scale effects and temporal variations in cropland ESs supply, trade-offs/synergies, and bundles. Results showed relatively stable spatial patterns and hot spots of ESs from 2000 to 2019, with a trend towards increased homogeneity and aggregation as scales increased. Trade-offs and synergies between pairwise ESs were stronger and more synergistic at coarser scales. We identified three ecosystem service bundles (ESBs) at all three scales, exhibiting relatively consistent average ES characteristics, but also demonstrating spatial heterogeneity and scale effects on their patterns.

Abstract:Grasping cropland abandonment patterns in China can help protect croplands, thereby ensuring the perpetuation of nationwide food security. However, the pattern of long-term cropland abandonment at the national scale remains limited. Here, we investigate the spatiotemporal patterns and drivers of cropland abandonment across China during 1990-2019 by integrating continuous long-term series of land cover, natural factors, and socioeconomic data. We find that the mean abandoned cropland area is 2.34 x 104 km2 per year. The spatial pattern of cropland and natural factors are prime drivers of cropland abandonment, but there is a substantial variation across agricultural regions. Further analysis suggests that annual food loss due to cropland abandonment is about 7.94 billion kilograms, which could feed 19.85 million people. These findings allow for a better understanding of the spatial heterogeneity and driving forces of cropland abandonment patterns, and inspire to govern global cropland abandonment and formulate relevant policies.

Abstract:Since its emergence, the development of agriculture has always been closely related to changes in the natural environment. The productivity and development of agriculture largely depend on natural conditions and agriculture and has an important impact on the environment. The development of modern conventional agriculture has also led to a series of ecological, economic, and social problems that threaten human development and sustenance. China has historically been heavily reliant on agriculture and provides food and clothing for approximately 22% of the world’s population while only accounting for 9% of the world’s cultivated land and 6% of freshwater resources. Since the 21st century, the agricultural development of China has faced increasing resource and environmental constraints due to rapid industrialization and urbanization. Based on the perspective of efficiency evolution, data envelopment analysis (DEA) and spatial autocorrelation analysis (SAA) were used to test the environment adaptability efficiency within China’s agricultural systems across 30 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities, and explore its temporal and spatial evolution patterns and characteristics. Our study thus possesses both theoretical and practical significance. Furthermore, this study would enable the development of methods to assess China’s agricultural systems, in addition to providing a theoretical basis and guidelines for the creation of sustainable agriculture development strategies both in China and in other countries and regions. The following are the main conclusions of this study: (1) from 2000 to 2018, the overall environmental adaptability efficiency within China’s agricultural systems exhibited a gradual upward trend, achieving a transition from medium-level efficiency towards high-level efficiency, and the environmental adaptability of agricultural systems continued to increase. However, a certain gap remained between the level achieved and the DEA’s level of effectiveness, and therefore additional efforts are required to close this gap. (2) The environmental adaptability efficiency within China’s agricultural system showed a significant positive correlation in spatial distribution. Particularly, clear spatial aggregation characteristics were observed at the provincial level, which was also characterized by strong features of spatial dependence and spatial heterogeneity. Moreover, the degree of spatial aggregation increased gradually over time. High-value areas were mainly located along the southeast coastal area, whereas low-value areas were primarily located in the inland areas of the northwest. Therefore, environmental adaptability efficiency generally followed a northwest-southeast spatial distribution.

Abstract:Identifying ecosystem service functions, clarifying the spatiotemporal trade-offs and synergies of terrestrial ecosystem services and their driving mechanisms, and exploring differentiated ecological functional zoning are crucial steps in achieving healthy regional ecosystem management, and are conducive to developing diversified ecological restoration strategies, establishing a robust cross-regional collaborative management mechanism, implementing differentiated ecological management strategies, and contributing to the construction of a Beautiful China. This paper, based on the InVEST model, Pearson correlation, GeoDetector, and Spatiotemporal Geographically Weighted Regression models, constructs a spatial quantification model of the trade-offs and synergies among five key ecosystem service functions—habitat quality, soil retention, water conservation, food supply, and carbon sequestration—of China's terrestrial ecosystems from 2000 to 2020. It explores the influencing factors of terrestrial ecosystem services in China and their spatiotemporal heterogeneity, thereby investigating the future strategies for ecological functional zoning and management of China's national land space. The results indicate that: (1) during 2000–2020, China's food supply and soil conservation have increased. However, the habitat quality, water conservation, and carbon sequestration have decreased. (2) Significant spatial and temporal heterogeneities exist in the key ecosystem services of China's terrestrial ecosystems. (3) Natural, economic, and social factors all impact China's terrestrial key ecosystem services. Among them, slope, annual average precipitation, land development intensity, and vegetation coverage are the main influencing factors, and different factors exhibit significant spatial heterogeneity. (4) Significant trade-offs/synergy effects among critical terrestrial ecosystem services exist in China. (5) China's national territory is divided into four ecological protection functional zones: ecological restoration areas, ecological control areas, resilient development areas, and ecological conservation areas, and explores differentiated zoning optimization control paths.

Spatiotemporal Variations in the Eco-Health Condition of China's Long-Term Stable Cultivated Land Using Google Earth Engine from 2001 to 2019

Abstract:Long-term stable cultivated land (LSCL) is associated with food security. However, relevant studies about monitoring the eco-health condition (EHC) change of LSCL are insufficient at the national level. In our study, the Google Earth Engine platform and the remote sensing pixel-based ecological index model (RSEI-2) were employed to detect the EHC change tendency of LSCL from 2001 to 2019 at the national level. The results showed that approximately half of the LSCL EHC is increasing (56.57%) in China. The EHC increase was present in northeastern and southwestern of China. The EHC decrease occurred in northwestern China and the Inner Mongolia area, which have low rainfall. The results of drought division have proven that the limitation of rainfall could increase the risk of EHC degradation on the LSCL. The analysis of field size showed that large field size LSCL plots (16-25 ha) could increase the EHC (approximately 8-fold), while the very large field size LSCL plots (25-100 ha) showed little positive effects (approximately 1-fold). Population urbanization has played a negative role in the sustainability of LSCL. Low urbanization showed a significant positive effect on the EHC of LSCL. To protect LSCL, we propose optimizing farmers' cropping structure and management methods through the in-centives and supervision of policy instruments.

Abstract:Assessing urban environments is crucial for promoting sustainable urban development. However, current studies often lack a dynamic processes-oriented perspective and are geographically limited. This study utilizes the Comprehensive Evaluation Index (CEI), derived from multi-source data, to evaluate the environmental conditions of the 36 Chinese metropolitan areas from 2000 to 2021 and captures spatiotemporal non-stationarity through trend analysis and the Dynamic Time Warping algorithm. The results indicate a tendency of deterioration followed by improvement in the urban environment, with an inflection point in 2013. Initially, the environmental conditions in the core areas lagged behind those in the expanded areas, but eventually, the core areas surpassed the expanded areas. The trajectory of environmental change displays regional variations and spatial clustering. The contribution of surface fine particulate matter began to decline around 2013, while land surface temperature and vegetation coverage emerged as the primary contributors. Our object-oriented management approach can provide directional guidance for future urban environmental management. This study contributes to promoting sustainable development.

Abstract:Building a more resilient response system to climate change for sustainable development and reducing uncertainty in China's food markets, requires access to historical research gaps and mapping future research progress for decision making. However, the lack of quantitative and objective analyses to ensure the stability and development of agroecosystems increases the complexity of agro-climatic mechanisms, which leads to uncertainty and undesirable consequences. In this paper, we review the characteristics of climate change in China (1951–2020), reveal the mechanisms of agroecosystem structure in response to climate, and identify challenges and opportunities for future efforts in the context of research progress. The aim is to improve the scientific validity and relevance of future research by clarifying agro-climatic response mechanisms. The results show that surface temperature, precipitation, and frequency of extreme weather events have increased to varying degrees in major agricultural regions of China in 1951–2020. And they have strong geographic variation, which has resulted in droughts in the north and floods in the south. Moreover, climate change has complicated the mechanisms of soil moisture, Net Primary Productivity (NPP), soil carbon pool, and crop pest structure in agroecosystems. This lends to a reduction in soil water holding capacity, NPP, soil carbon content, and the number of natural enemies of diseases and insects, which in turn affects crop yields. However, human interventions can mitigate the deterioration of these factors. We have also realized that the methodology and theory of historical research poses a great challenge to future agroecosystem. Historical and projected climate trends identified current gaps in interdisciplinary integration and multidisciplinary research required to manage diverse spatio-temporal climate change impacts on agroecosystems. Future efforts should highlight integrated management and decision making, multidisciplinary big data coupling, and numerical simulations to ensure sustainable agricultural development, ecological security, and food security in China.

Abstract:Coordinating urban development, food security, and ecological protection is a prerequisite for sustainable development. However, with a large population and rapid urbanization, there are still many challenges to optimize the urban-agricultural-ecological space. Here, taking China as a case in point, we explored the dynamic pattern of urban-agricultural-ecological space from 2000 to 2020. The driving mechanism of urban-agricultural-ecological space was simulated with the Maximum Entropy (MaxEnt) Model at both the national and regional scales. The results indicated that about 1/8 of urban-agricultural-ecological space types in mainland China have been changed from 2000 to 2020, most of which is the transformation between agricultural space and ecological space. According to the main type of urban-agricultural-ecological space change, there could be classified into four different zones from the east coast to the west inland in mainland China. As a whole, socioeconomic factors have more contributions to the urban-agricultural-ecological space changes, especially the GDP density for the transformation between agricultural space and ecological space (the relative importance was 61.0%), the proportion of residential area for the transformation between agricultural space and urban space (the relative importance was 38.1%), and the initial land-use type for the transformation between urban space and ecological space (the relative importance was 30.9%). These findings may support the scientifically delineation of urban space, agricultural space, and ecological space (three districts and three lines) in China.

Spatiotemporal dynamics of ecosystem supply service intensity in China: Patterns, drivers, and implications for sustainable development

Abstract:With the steady development of global economy and the rapid increase of population, it is of great significance to quantify the supply capacity of ecosystem services and reveal its driving factors for sustainable development. We quantify the ecosystem supply service intensity (ESSI) using multiple sources of natural and cultural data from 2000 to 2020. We then jointly analyze this data with the information entropy of the land to obtain the temporal and spatial evolution law of ESSI under multiple scales in China. At the same time, according to the spatial distribution of ESSI in China, the concept of China's ecosystem supply service intensity development equilibrium line (ESSIL) is innovatively put forward. The results show that the spatial distribution pattern of China's ESSI is symmetrical with the ESSIL which is nearly orthogonal to Hu Huanyong line. Because of the different regional development policies, different regions with different economic levels have different driving effects on land change. Furthermore, due to the country's large size, the primary ESSI drivers vary greatly throughout its various regions. The assessment of the ESSI changes in China from multi-scale, combined with the effects of land cover change, climate and human activities, and put forward a new pattern distribution mode of ESSI in China, which provides a new perspective for formulating ecologically sustainable development strategies in large-scale areas.

Abstract:<p>Ecological function reflects the ability of the land to provide ecological goods to support high-quality human production and life. The evaluation of the county-level ecological function across the whole nation is crucial for sustainable land management, which has not been implemented effectively in China. In this study, we proposed a unified system for the assessment of ecological function that would be comparable at the county level, and we applied the system to evaluate the ecological function of 2850 counties across China based on multi-source data. We also examined the spatiotemporal changes in ecological function from 2009 to 2015 using standard deviational ellipses and coefficients of variation. The results showed that the number of counties with high levels of ecological function in China decreased by 8.13% from 2009 to 2012 and then increased by 0.6% from 2012 to 2015. The spatial pattern of the degradation of ecological function shifted from the east-west direction to the southwest-northeast direction and became centralized in the Central Plains area of China. The regional imbalance in ecological function followed the order from high to low of the central, western, northeastern, and eastern areas of China. Targeted policies were proposed to control the degradation of the ecological function in the four regions in China.</p>

Abstract:Since the beginning of the new century, there has been a notable enhancement in China's ecological environment quality (EEQ), a development occurring in tandem with climate change and the extensive ecological restoration projects (ERPs) undertaken in the country. However, comprehensive insights into the spatial and temporal characteristics of China's EEQ, and its responses to both climate change and human activities over the past two decades, have remained largely elusive. In this study, we harnessed a combination of multi-source remote-sensing data and reanalysis data. We employed Theil–Sen median trend analysis, multivariate regression residual analysis, and the Hurst index to examine the impacts and changing patterns of climatic factors and human activities on China's EEQ during the past two decades. Furthermore, we endeavored to forecast the future trajectory of EEQ. Our findings underscore a significant improvement in EEQ across most regions of China between 2002 and 2019, with the most pronounced enhancements observed in the Loess Plateau, Northeast China, and South China. This transformation can be attributed to the combined influence of climatic factors and human activities, which jointly accounted for alterations in EEQ across 78.25% of China's geographical expanse. Human activities (HA) contributed 3.93% to these changes, while climatic factors (CC) contributed 17.79%. Additionally, our projections indicate that EEQ is poised to continue improving in 56.70% of China's territory in the foreseeable future. However, the Loess Plateau, Tarim Basin, and Inner Mongolia Plateau are anticipated to experience a declining trend. Consequently, within the context of global climate change, the judicious management of human activities emerges as a critical imperative for maintaining EEQ in China. This study, bridging existing gaps in the literature, furnishes a scientific foundation for comprehending the evolving dynamics of EEQ in China and informs the optimization of management policies in this domain.

Abstract:Increasingly frequent land evolution in China seriously impacts the sustainable supply of ecosystem services as well as the economy's steady and sustainable growth. Driven by physiographic, socioeconomic, and transportation accessibility factors, China has experienced significant mutual changes among gra ssland, forest, unused land, and cropland over the past 20 years, particularly before 2010. Projections for 2030 and 2060 indicate an increase in cropland, accompanied by a degradation of forest and grassland. Future land changes will vary under different policy scenarios. Specifically, the source of urbanization land will shift from cropland to grassland if cropland is protected, whereas cropland areas will continue to decrease under the environmental preservation scenario. In the future, China should maintain agricultural policies based on cropland protection and the ecological restoration policy that places an emphasis on natural restoration. These findings provide a reference for achieving sustainable land development.
Ecological Effects Associated with Land-Use Change in China'S Southwest Agricultural Landscape

Abstract:Research on land-use and land-cover change, with associated effects on the eco-environment, is a key to understanding global change. The concept of 'ecosystem services' is also a hot issue in ecology and ecological economics. In this study, ecosystem service values are used to assess the ecological values of corresponding land-use types, so as to evaluate the ecological effects of regional land-use change. China's southwest agricultural landscape has unique ecological functions; but it also belongs to an ecologically fragile zone. Consequently, land-use change and associated ecological effects must be monitored to assure sustainable development of this area. Based on TM images in 1988, 1994 and 1999, the landscape classification maps of Yongsheng County were assessed using supervised classification and interactive modification methods. The transition matrix of land-use types and three indices of spatial patterns, patch-level, class-level and landscape-level indices, were calculated using models and GIS to examine the spatial patterns and dynamics of land use in the study area. The results show the influences of human activities and natural environmental elements, and that unused land has decreased rapidly, together with a continuous increase in forest during the past I I years. There are also frequent intermediate transitions between farmland and unused land. An index for landscape diversity shows a tendency to increase, indicating that the proportions of each landscape element tended to average. Also, the decrease in the fractal dimension of unused land reveals that the effects of human activity are increasing. Spatial-temporal characteristics of cropland distribution and its landscape fragmentation in China

Abstract:Analysing China's cropland changes highlights the intertwined dynamics of urbanization, industrialization, and ecological policies, offering insights into cropland efficiency and advancing agricultural modernization. This study analysed China's county-level cropland area and landscape fragmentation from 1990 to 2021 using land use data. The results revealed an uneven cropland distribution in China, which was mainly concentrated in regions such as Northeast China, the North China Plain, the Sichuan Basin, and the Middle-Lower Yangtze Plains, with most cropland occurring north of the Qinling Mountains-Huaihe River boundary. In the past three decades, China's cropland area has decreased by 8.68 million ha. Approximately 72.14% of the counties experienced a decline, and 24 provinces reported a net loss. Notably, there was large-scale land use type replacement in China, which was primarily manifested as the spatial displacement of cropland with forest, grassland, and impervious surfaces. As a result, the net reduction in cropland accounted for only 22.24% of the total cropland decrease. From 1990 to 2021, 52.04% of China's county-level cropland exhibited no significant changes in total area (TA) or patch density (PD), maintaining a stable cropland landscape. A total of 20.70% of the counties had significant TA reductions without PD changes, primarily in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain. Counties without TA changes but significant PD declines represented 11.72%, mainly distributed in transitional zones of the second and third steps of China's terrain, the Loess Plateau, the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, and some areas of the Southeast Hills. Counties with significant TA reductions and PD increases accounted for 7.79%, primarily found in the border areas between Henan and Anhui, as well as Jiangsu. Thus, whether cropland loss in China over the past 30 years has led to increased fragmentation has shown clear spatial heterogeneity. This study provides scientific support for guiding cropland utilization to enhance sustainability and resilience in China.

Abstract:Whether China can achieve the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) largely depends on the ability of main food-producing areas to cope with multiple land use change challenges. Despite the fact that the Yangtze River basin is one of the key regions for China's food security, the spatiotemporal dynamics of cropland abandonment and recultivation remain largely unexplored in this region. The present study assesses the evolution of the agricultural system within the Yangtze River basin between 2000 and 2020 by mapping cropland abandonment and recultivation using MODIS time series and multiple land cover products. The results highlight a widespread cropland abandonment process (i.e., 10.5% of the total study area between 2000 and 2020), predominantly in Western Sichuan, Eastern Yunnan, and Central Jiangxi. Although 70% of abandoned cropland is situated in areas with slopes less than 5°, the highest rates of abandonment are in mountainous regions. However, by 2020, 74% of this abandoned cropland had been recultivated at least once, whereas half of the abandoned croplands got recultivated within three years of their initial abandonment. Hence, as this is one of the first studies that unravels the complex interaction between cropland abandonment and recultivation in a spatiotemporal explicit context, it offers (i) scientists a novel methodological framework to assess agricultural land use issues across large geographical entities, and (ii) policy-makers new insights to support the sustainable transition of the agricultural sector.

Abstract:Human activities have altered the quantity and distribution of cropland, and climate change profoundly affects crop productivity. However, the spatiotemporal patterns and driving mechanisms of crop productivity remain unclear. Here, we analyze the spatiotemporal evolution of Chinese crop productivity using long-term satellite observation data. We employ the residual trend analysis method to separate the relative contributions of climate change and non-climate factors to crop productivity. Our results indicate the following: (1) from 2001 to 2020, China's crop productivity increased by approximately 0.11 kgCm −2 yr −1 , which compensated for the decline in crop yields caused by a reduction in cropland area. (2) Crop productivity exhibits significant spatial heterogeneity, with notable differences between the southern and northern regions of China. Both cropland and crop productivity show a northward shift, with the migration distance of the mean center of crop productivity exceeding that of cropland. (3) Agricultural production inputs are closely related to crop productivity, but climate change remains the primary factor influencing changes in Chinese crop productivity. Crop productivity in northern China is more sensitive to climate change, and the dominant factors vary among different agricultural districts. (4) Over the study period, long-term crop cultivation in northern China has benefited the net primary productivity of surface vegetation, though the sustainability of production faces challenges. This study is of great importance for maintaining food security and promoting sustainable agricultural development, offering guidance for cross-regional cropland compensation.

Abstract:Understanding the relationship between climate change and cropland spatiotemporal patterns is critical for developing government policy and assisting agriculture in adapting to future climate change. The land use dataset was used to extract the area of cropland expansion and contraction as well as to calculate the cropland landscape indices. The impacts of climatic factors on the spatiotemporal patterns of cropland were quantified for different time periods by Random Forest (RF) classification and regression models, and the accuracy of the models was used as the intensity of the influence of climatic factors on cropland change. The results revealed that the total cropland area has consistently increased by 17.74% in the last four decades. The Sanjiang Plain (SJP) and Songnen Plain (SNP), with high aggregation and a simple shape of cropland landscapes, were the main regions where the cropland area has increased. Cropland landscape aggregation was low in mountainous areas. Before 2000, the total cropland area expanded more (46,748 km 2 ) in response to the pressure to ensure food security, whereas there was less cropland loss. The accuracy of the RF model during this period revealed that the changes in cropland spatiotemporal patterns were highly influenced by climatic factors. After 2000, the climate conditions gradually became warmer and wetter. The total area of cropland increased slightly (10,587 km 2 ) under the influence of the contradictory relationships among economic development, food production and ecological conservation, and the conversion between cropland and natural landscape types was drastic. The impact of climatic factors on changes in cropland spatiotemporal patterns has declined. Our results suggest that the response of spatiotemporal pattern changes in cropland to climatic factors differs under different policy contexts in different periods. The findings are intended to aid in the balance of agricultural production and ecological conservation in Northeast China in the face of climate change.

Abstract:Ecosystems are an important basis for promoting sustainable development goals (SDGs) through the provision of stable ecosystem services (ESs). In the past 20 years, China has implemented a series of forestry ecological development projects, resulting in the improvement of the ecological environment. In this context, changes in ESs in China may affect the contribution of ecosystems to the SDGs, but there is a lack of research in this area. Studies have shown that ESs can support multiple SDGs, and quantifying the contribution of ecosystems to SDGs is currently a research focus. However, few studies have quantified the extent of the contribution of different ESs to the SDGs, although these differences are generally assumed. To narrow this knowledge gap, we construct an assessment approach that integrates the extent of the contribution of different ESs to the SDGs and assesses the temporal and spatial dynamics of the contribution of ESs to the SDGs in China from 2000 to 2020. Our analysis results indicate that during the study period, fractional vegetation cover improved in China. In general, water provision, soil conservation, and food provision services improved, while carbon storage and biodiversity maintenance services declined. The contribution capacity of provincial ecosystems to the SDGs increased, except in Tibet, between 2000 and 2020. Overall, the contributions to the SDGs had obvious spatial differences. The research results can support policy formulation and research on ES management and SDGs.
